Yes it does. It's called SUSE YOU (YaST Online Update), scroll all the way down here for their description. Like I've mentioned before in this thread you can create a local ftp or http mirror with all the suse packages and do as many installs without paying anything. I can justify paying $80 to SuSE every year or every two years for the type of content they deliver.... not just the boxed CD set but the free online updates, unlike what RedHat was doing. I know a lot of Linux users will probably say something like "why do I have to pay for free software I can just use Gentoo or Debian" and that's true. You don't have to pay but I don't want to see the Professional version of SuSE to go the way of Fedora which goes back to what you said: you want a brand name. I think it's perfectly reasonable to pay $80 at the very least every two years to help maintain that brand name.

It absolutely MUST be almost identical in operation to Windows, or it won't be worthwhile.

Well SuSE comes with KDE installed and Gnome as an option both of which I don't use. I don't know if that's Window'ish enough for your students. One thing is for sure.... getting linux newbies to deal with configuration using YaST is a lot easier than doing something without such a utility.

The SUSE specific tools are not licensed under the GPL and even though they can be redistributed non-commercially, a normal preinstallation without source (or written offer to provide the sources) violates the GPL and providing you with a copy of the installation media (which include the source to satisfy the GPL) is incompatible with the SUSE license, unless it's a boxed copy from SUSE which the retailer paid for. A "free operating system" bundled with a commercially offered computer system is not "non-commercial" distribution because it adds value to the system. The retailer would not expend time to preinstall the system except in order to be able to sell the system at a higher price. SUSE may still accept this as "distribution at no cost", but strictly speaking, the retailer needs written permission from SUSE.

We should be able to take that one down as well.

You're right that you can't download full ISOs for SuSE. However, you can download an ISO of their live eval CD to give SuSE a try. And let's not forget that you can do full installs of SuSE via ftp (same link as above). SuSE 9.0 ftp installs should be available soon.

Novell buys SCO's United Linux Partner so they can bring Linux to even more of the masses and therefore must be sued for competing with SCO. How can you be a competitor when you're in a partnership?

Slasdot is not just about technology. You'll notice that it also deals with civil rights (eg. RIAA abuse of fileswappers), tech worker issues (eg. outsourcing, bad corporate policy), government policies (eg. China using linux), etc.

What you're asking for is a SAN.

I just installed a Network Appliance FAS250 in my server room. It speaks CIFS, NFS, and iSCSI.

By the way, you're wrong... Oracle will run perfectly using CIFS shares (I'm running it now, and have been for the past few months), and NetApp has plenty of documents in their tech library showing all the different ways to use attached storage with Oracle and many other pieces of software.

With respect to speed, it really depends on the network infrastructure. I've got a Cisco GigE switch attaching 6 machines directly to a GigE port on the NetApp Filer. It is literally twice as fast than the directly attached RAID 5 (caching, etc.) arrays that it replaced.

I think that Microsoft Exchange can be installed to a CIFS share, but if not, you should look at iSCSI. My company uses Lotus Notes 4.6.7 (sweet, merciful Christ, please put me out of my misery), and it works great from a CIFS share on the NetApp.

Microsoft has a free iSCSI Initiator for Windows that will mount an iSCSI device just like any other SCSI drive in Windows. You can find several iSCSI targets for linux here.

I have about 50 Mac's on our network (graphics department) that needed to talk with the new filer. Instead of installing a klugy piece of software to make the OS9 Macs talk to the SAN at $150/seat, I installed a linux box using samba to talk to the SAN through CIFS and netatalk (AppleTalk for linux) to re-share out the samba mounts. Becides some quirks (Mac's don't see the linux gateway in the AFP browse list, but can connect directly through IP), it works rather well.

Look at iSCSI, it does exactly what you're looking for.

I've been using RedHat for the past 7 years. For the past few months, I've been using SuSE 8.2 and I LOVE IT! Recent announcements from RH have become only a tipping point for me to switch to SuSE completely at home and at work.

To an Operating System that dosen't have virus problems.

Microsoft Windows(TM) might be able to run on intel emulation, that will allow Microsoft Windows to run on it, but frankly, who cares except Microsoft, Intel, AMD and maybe a few others?

If windows doesn't port to this processor, I am sure some other OS will take over, and everything will be rewritten for that OS. Alternately, you might go with an existing OS easier to port, like Mac OS, NetBSD or GNU/Linux. (URLs in the of this post)

A silly OS and its platform dependence isn't gonna stop development that much.

Some will charge you for GNU/Linux, and give you support or written manuals, silver-CDs or something in return. I probably missed a lot of links, but to mention some of the commercial distributions I missed, here is a comparison on price.

One thing I want to know is what the so called SCO Partners, like Conectiva and SuSE (the whole Unitedlinux shebang) is going to do about it.
Conectiva, at least, has issues a very vague stated saying they don't agree with SCO. But they are still working with them.
I'm sure there are many other companies that say they support the Linux comunity and the GPL, and are still working with SCO. Is that supposed to mean something ?

3. Drag and drop -- can't tell.
4. Skinnable -- can't tell, though I've changed the skins on a few web apps by just tracking down the templates used to make the pages.
5. Fuzzy email address or alias search -- can't tell; the demo system doesn't have anyone in the system, so there's no way to test this.
6. Look and feel in comparison to OWA 2003: can't comment, though I wish the admins would switch from what we have now -- almost anything. Damn annoying.
