Yep, I hear ya. I am recording from OTA signals only (no cable) so for me it is not a concern. I have been really impressed with the HDHomeRun for recording OTA HD signals.

  4. Re:Tivo's Series3 is a ripoff on Tivo On Board With YouTube's New API · · Score: 1

I agree with this post overall, but want to add a couple of comments:

    1. I have used the HDHomeRun unit with good success - it has two ATSC/QAM tuners and can record two streams simultaneously. It records over your network to a destination such as a MythTV box. It costs around $170.

    2. Outputting HD video to an HDTV via MythTV is non-trivial. So much so that I am going to try a TiVo HD unit for a while to see if I can live with it (been using MythTV for 4 years), because MythTV requires endless tweaking to get this to work and I have not been entirely successful.

The freedom to do what you want with MythTV is great, and I have used pretty much all of the MythTV plugins over the years, but I am growing tired of messing with it. Paying $180 for a refurbished TiVo HD unit (e.g., recent woot.com deal) is attractive, even with the monthly charges. Believe me, I have paid so much for MythTV-related hardware over the years that I could have bought a couple of TiVo lifetime subscriptions.

In fact, many of them are the same companies from which Google is now acquiring the imagery used in Google Earth. Does this guy really believe Google is conducting their own overflights and sending up their own balloons? Does Google now have their own satellites, too?

  8. Invest in a money market account on Investing Tips for College Students? · · Score: 1

If this is money you may need in the near term, I highly recommend investing in a money market account. Not the money market account at your bank or credit union, which probably have a low-percentage rate of return, but rather something like Vanguard's Prime Money Market Fund, or Emigrant Direct. Both are paying around 5%, which is pretty darn good. Money market accounts are insured up to $100K by the FDIC. And both Vanguard and Emigrant direct offer all the services you might need, such as being able to write checks against the account, schedule automatic deposits or withdrawals from other accounts, etc.

Don't fool around with the stock market or mutual funds if you plan to need this money in the next few years. If you want to invest it for the long term, put it in something like Vanguard's Total Stock Market Index fund and let it sit. Better yet, set up a Roth IRA account with Vanguard, contribute the maximum amount each year, and don't touch it until you retire. This will be one of your smartest moves.

Having some cash saved up might allow you to "walk away from ANY bad job" when you're 22 and without dependents, but it doesn't work for everyone. Sustaining health insurance coverage is a major deal for many people.

Not a stretch at all. My MythTV box does all of this, except for the last (HD) bullet - only because I don't have an HD card.

My wife and kid use it all the time, with no difficulty. All of our home videos and digital pix are mounted via NFS and we watch them through MythTV. Ditto with our mp3s - thousands of songs on random getting played through the stereo via Myth.

It's one of the best things I've ever built. Check out Jarod's guide for building a FC3-based MythTV system. The guide is helpful even if you're not a fan of Fedora Core.

You know not of what you speak. The OSL has brought in a tremendous amount of money to OSU in the short time they have existed. Not only have they produced unique solutions for folks on campus (and farther away), they have generated a great deal of interest in open source technology within the campus community.

In addition to open source development activities, they are providing reliable hosting to some of the largest open source projects around.

What about education, you say? The OSL is providing unique job opportunities to students interested in open source technologies. Many students are choosing OSU over other schools in part because of the OSL.

They are not seen as a joke at OSU; on the contrary, they are seen as an asset.
