salt fountain:
A hypothesized perpetual fountain where a long, narrow heat-conducting pipe inserted vertically through a region of ocean where warm, salty water overlies colder, fresher (and therefore denser) water. Water pumped upwards through the pipe would reach the same temperature as the surroundings at the same level (by conduction of heat through the wall of the pipe), while it remained fresher and therefore lighter. A fountain started thusly (in either direction) will continue to flow so long as there is a vertical gradient of salinity to supply potential energy. The idea was first advanced by Stommel etal. (1956) and is discussed in Turner (1973).

You'd have to get the water from the bottom of the ocean flowing through the pipe, first of all, and then the velocity would end up being dependent on the heat transfer through the pipe, the salinity, and the geometry. I'm not sure how strong it'd be, but you might be able to use this to keep the flow going, although not to start it.

The tone of the article is unfortunate. But it's also too bad that really good technology gets dissed by the tech community if it's well marketed. mSpace is a rather sophisticated system for storing and relating arbitrary unstructured information in meaningful ways. The interface doesn't do it full justice.

McGuffin and Schraefel's paper of mSpaces, polyarchies and zzStructures won the ACM Hypertext Conference's award for "Special Research Distinction for Excellent Presentation of Theoretical Concepts."

Schraefel is not only a good programmer, doing very cutting edge information technology stuff, but she and her team have managed to design a useful piece of software that uses it. Since when can the Academic world do this kind of thing?

Fresh fruit and produce probably does move by truck (and you pay for it), but your boxed and canned goods move by rail. Spoilage in Del Monte tomato sauce is pretty low. There's a running joke about oatmeal running by slurry pipe (well, in some circles....).

Basically, you've got a hierarchy of shipping rates, most to least expensive being air, expedited ground (FedEx, UPS), local drayage, long-haul trucking, rail, barge, bulk maritime, and pipeline. The difference in cost very marked. The slower methods are best suited to bulk goods where it doesn't particularly matter what specific item you get, just how much (crude oil, grain, coal, lumber).

Costs are based on both fuel and labor costs. Rail crews run about 6 per train (IIRC), a 110 unit train can carry 400+ 40' containers (more in "SixPac" and related specialized configurations). The same load on trucks requires 200 drivers. A barge equals about 15 rail cars or 60 trucks. And a large container ship will handle thousands of containers. Comparative fuel requirements: 1 gallon gets you about 60 ton-miles by truck, 200 ton-miles by train, and 515 ton-miles by barge. Source.

That link includes a calculator so you can compare fuel costs. Assuming 1000 tons, 1000 miles, and $1.50/gal fuel costs. truck works out to $25,338, rail to $7,426, barge to $2,918. That excludes labor and capital costs, as well as insurance (cost of covering damaged shipments is a considerable expense).

In the early 1990s, Mid-Western droughts lead to historically low water levels on the Mississippi. One consequence was a tremendous increase in rail traffic as loads which would once have moved by barge went by rail. Great if you were a railroad, not so good for shippers and farmer.

The big development of the past three decades has been "intermodal" transport. Shipping containers to you and me. A container is filled at the factory in China, trucked to a rail point, trained to a shipyard, shipped to a US port, railed to a local delivery point, and trucked to local destination.

In practice, runs of < 300 miles tend to be cost-effective for truck, anything more, rail, and if a navigable waterway exists, ship.

Last I looked into it (about 15 years back) there were expedited intermodal cross-country tarrifs for 7-14 day delivery. Perhaps not "JIT", but useful for those who figure a rolling warehouse is useful (and railroads had to fight for years to get their boxcars back on time). Did a college research paper on the Japanese fresh broccoli market. That was crop from Salinas Valley, California, via refrigerated intermodal transport, to Japan, across 8,000 miles of ocean, in 14 days. Feasibly. Pretty impressive.

Not a railroader, but I've known a few pretty well.

Firstly the US economy is the largest in the world (at least for now), so it effectively swamps what other countries do.

And thus this proves that the US is not a free market economy? That is not a logical argument.

Secondly, the US (despite some window dressing) has a highly protectionist economy, particularly for agriculture. Your government provides _massive_ corporate welfare to agribusiness, and dumps subsidised food in other countries in much the same way as the EU, just a bit less obviously.

The US imports 100% of our coffee, tea, cocoa, and bananas. We also import 93% of our spices and herbs, 69% of our broccoli, and 55% of our fish and shellfish. Even so, agriculture is a tiny portion of the US economy. Only 0.8% of the US population works in agriculture.

Finding subsidies in a tiny section of the US economy hardly shows that the US is "highly protectionist". You'll have to find proof elsewhere. I suggest that you show me that proof before making any more wild accusations.

Truth is US business firms enjoy considerably greater flexibility than their counterparts in Western Europe and Japan in decisions to expand capital plant, to lay off surplus workers, and to develop new products. At the same time, they face higher barriers to entry in their rivals' home markets than the barriers to entry of foreign firms in US markets.

The school name on your resume gets you on the interview pile, that's about it.

The more important decision IMO, is what kind of education you want from your CS degree. I've been to both stateU and a big name school. I hated every minute of my time at the big name school because they were more research oriented, and I could care less.

Sometimes it's hard to determine from the school, since my stateU was also well known for research as well, but also it's teaching excellence, but decide which you'd prefer, and base your decision on that.

I use sodipodi. It's actual a decent and quite capable tool. Tigert uses (or has) GIMP, but when he started it was much much less capable than it is today. Think about that.

Larry Ewing, the designer of the Linux pengiun, used GIMP 0.54, which is about where Sodipodi is compared to something like Adobe Illustrator today.

Sodipodi complements GIMP *greatly*. It's a joy to use both together, since GIMP vector tools aren't that useful for actual drawing purposes and can be tedious.

True, the Gulf Stream is a western boundary current (the Brazil, Agulhas, East Australian and Kuroshio Currents are as well). They are a "return" current caused by wind driven currents and the coreolis force. For example, in the Subtropical North Atlanic (Below 45 degrees N or so), the prevaling winds blow from west to east ("the westerlies"), which causes an equatorward drift. The Gulf Stream is the return flow of that drift "bunched up" on the western side of the the Atlantic. A bit of an oversimplification, you can read a bit more here.

The thermohaline circulation is related to deep circulation. In the North Atlantic (the Labrador, Norwegian and Greenland Seas), water can be cooled very rapidly during winter, which sets up convection cells - when cooled, the water becomes more dense and starts to sink; the formation of ice also removes pure water and increases density. So the cold, salty "deep water" sinks down (to somewhere between 1000 m and the bottom - about 4000 m), and drifts equatorward , underneath the gulf stream. That deep water is thought to make its way to the Southern Ocean, and around into the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where it eventually upwells. Deep water moves slowly, but is the counterpart to surface circulation (and there's a lot of it). This theory was put forward by an Oceanographer named Wally Broeker, who called it the "global conveyor belt" - it is thought to be very important for moving heat around.

There is some evidence for rapid climate changes in ice core records, and some have speculated that the conveyor belt could be shut down (a la The Day After Tomorrow), which had some pretty hilarious science, climate-wise). There is some geochemical evidence that it has happened in the past - for instance there's some evidence that two massive lakes filled with meltwater from the last glaciation drained into the North Atlantic over a very short period (following the failure of a massive ice dam) about 8200 years ago. The idea is that a surface layer of very fresh (i.e. low-salinity, hence low density) water, would "cap" the deepwater production areas. If it's already pretty fresh, ice formation wouldn't increase the salinity as much (and density is mostly from salinity, not temperature) - thus requiring much more cooling to make new deep water (which would be exacerbated by any warming). At some point deep water would not be created, and since the water from the Gulf Stream must go somewhere, it would "pile up" in the North Atlantic, eventually disrupting or stopping the Gulf Sream.

Obviously there aren't any glacial lakes that we need to worry about suddently draining into the North Atlantic, but the idea is that increased inputs of fresh water would eventually reduce the amount of deepwater formation. Sorry my friend, but your some of your statments about Bluetooth are incorrect. I've developed several Bluetooth applications for the Mac and the PC. Here's a link to my Bluetooth controled remote control plaform using National Instruments hardware.

Bluetooth is all about low power consumption, and reliable serial communications. It was origninally developed to simply replace the standard serial interface. It is meant to be used as a replacement litterally only for the cable. The core bluetooth specification does not introduce any new technologies, but simply replaces old technologies with a wireless aspect.

Now there are some profiles that do some rediculous things over bluetooth (like the internet gateway profile, or piconet... ludicrous). Bluetooth was never meant to be a networking device... it was meant to standardize wireless mice, and basic serial devices. The big deal with bluetooth is its fundamental specification that has a great way to add profiles to do whatever you like.

Bluetooth has nothing to do with speed. The specification maxes out at like 926K/s (I might be a little off). That's in a clean room, with absolutely no interferance.

There are two major types of bluetooth running modes. 100mW and ~10mW. That is tiny compared to 802.11b. Bluetooth devices are specifically design to be low power consumption, and can provide states of next to no power consumption.

Of course Bluetooth is "on top of" Zigbee". There are so many stardarized profiles for bluetooth, why would anyone go through and remake those? More than likely, (though I can't say for certain), Zigbee will be design specifically to be backwards compatible with or have a "bluetooth" emulation mode so we can keep using all those bluetooth devices that are out! And guess what, when Zigbee is replaced, I bet whatever comes out after that will too!

I think they were refering to slowing the engine by electrically loading the generator. Basically, instead of recovering power from the wheels themselves, you take power from the engine as you deaccelerate by increasing the electrical load on the generator - i.e. charging the supercap pack. Its an interesting spin on the concept of regenerative braking.

By the way, it was developed in conjuction with my alma mater, and possibly one of my proffs.
