Hosts do it WITHOUT that problem (stopping both redirect security issues AND aiding reliability when DNS goes crash & they do quite often).

Hosts 'break' NO services (so cut the lies) & save you CPU cycles, RAM, + other forms of I/O used by them!

So, turning off the DNS clientside USERMODE slower cache (with large hosts files only, since MS doesn't fix this by creating a flexible datastructure vs. a limited sized queue type) can be offset by using a KERNELMODE faster service you use already - the diskcaching kernelmode subsystem (which yes, caches hosts off disk like any other file), making up for it! Index loss is offset by placing your fav. sites @ the TOP of custom hosts (in my case, with 3++ million hosts entries, that equates to 2-3 million indexed seeks with 24 favorites sites of mine @ the top of hosts).

Clue MORON - Hosts BLOCK THOSE ADS too saving me bandwidth I pay out for monthly that ads rob online as well as possibly infecting me with malicious code or tracking etc. (I, for instance, NEVER see a single one there)... Clue MORON - Hosts BLOCK THOSE ADS too saving me bandwidth I pay out for monthly that ads rob online as well as possibly infecting me with malicious code or tracking etc. (I, for instance, NEVER see a single one there)... I don't favor them anymore than I do ANY other site that hosts ads, for the reasons noted above.

Hosts/apk's program's set it/forget it easy, + does tons more for speed, security, reliability, anonymity & it gives you the user more direct control of blocking or speed up (which adblock doesn't do in the latter for hardcoded favorites which also aids reliability of sites access) data.

I certainly understand the frustration of dealing will overly complex systems or also a rushed language like JavaScript where variables are globals by default. Still, did you know that you can compile almost anything to JavaScript these days and have it run in the browser at near native speeds (well, only some browsers, but likely more and more). But the past is the past. We have to start from where we are -- and today, people live in their HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript browsers or will soon (even on phones, and especially on the emerging Firefox OS phones). I'm writing this from a US$250 Chromebook that is almost entirely just a browser as far as user experience. Any sophisticated-enough system could eventually remake the stack underneath it, like native Squeak could do. So, saying we could build on JavaScript does not mean endless perpetual complexity. Chrome OS shows how a focus on HTML/CSS/JavaScript can sometimes simplify things though from one perspective, especially user experience.

There are several issues related to complexity (inherent complexity, accidental complexity, user expectations, installability, standards, etc.). Regardless of technical merit, HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP won in key areas. Sure, you can create the next Squeak, and good luck with that, it is a fun project. And/or we can try to use the current widespread platform as best as we can. For me right now, that means minimizing the backend (PHP or whatever) while emphasizing the front-end (JavaScript) and ideally encoding data in useful long-term forms.

Same situation here. I can see how they *might* be useful, but none of the currently available models have a killer feature or, better yet, a set of killer features, that make me want to get one. Not even slightly. On the flipside of that, the one feature that they almost all seem to have that I most definitely don't want is that they are tied to a specific phone, or at least to a specific vendor. Maybe Apple can come up with somethings for them to do that everyone else can rip off for the whichever generation of Android-phone linked watches finally become interoperable...

Still, at least they don't have to look as ugly as sin (another common failing), a particulary important consideration for those of us that don't like/suit chunky watches; give me slim and elegant over the most of the current watch designs any day! I'd get something like this in a heartbeat if only the vendor in question could make it do something my current chronograph couldn't that I found useful - if it were about half as thick.

It would be updated to run on Bugs Bunny's rootingest tootingest Texan companion which means that it currently does not. Everyone knows that software projects shelved all the time so that means it might not work on it in the future depending on how Apple views how the developing is going.

Apple's falling out with Google over Maps primarily was about Google not wanting to enable turn-by-turn directions in iOS devices because it considered that feature to be a strategic advantage to move more Android devices. Steve Jobs negotiated aggressively to get the feature, but finally got fed up and decided Apple should have it's own map solution that would let it enable turn-by-turn as well as deny Google a fat stream of location data.

Google did want more access to user data on iOS, but it was the turn-by-turn issue that drove home the big wedge.
