Re:The only ridiculous thing is you
Still not a very deep explanation of what you did for EEC Systems software. "flexible parameterization of drivers utilized in their initialization" doesn't actually say anything very specific. But whatever.
As for putting frequently accessed data into ramdisks, of course it works. It's been done for years. If you have enough RAM and you can identify what you should spend it on. It's not as if you invented the idea. Are you saying that the work you did was in identifying which data to cache to ram to speed up database access?
As for the older/younger thing. No, my bad, that was a typo. Actually, I started typing "If you are about 15 years older than me,", then thought better of how to structure the sentence. I should have erased and rewritten, rather than just changing two words. In any case, that part from my post should have read:
I think you have your timeline wrong. If I am about 15 years younger than you, then I was well out of diapers when that software came out. Also, the opinions of cantankerous old men everywhere aside, being born before someone else isn't an accomplishment.
As for Arstechnica, and pretty much every forum I could find where you've posted, even if you had a small number of allies (and pretty much every ally still seemed to want to distance themselves from you), seemed to be overwhelmingly against you. In this thread, you talk about how you were kicked from majorgeeks.com despite the fact that a part owner was an ex-friend of yours. Then you mention how you were banned from ntcompatible.com by another friend (unless it was the same friend, you were unclear). I was amazed to actually see the word "sorry" come from you in that post and an admission you actually made a mistake. I didn't think you were capable of it. Kudos to you for that. Still, you ought to consider the possibility that maybe, just maybe, the reason so many people turn on you has something to do with the way you act.
As I've stated before, we seem to be peers. I have nothing to prove to you in order to be permitted to speak. And no, I'm not your senior in age. There was a typo, but the very next sentence after the one with the error should make it clear that was a typo.
-
Re:Like I figured: You're a "ne'er-do-well", lol!
The 15 year age gap is based on guesswork based on things you've said here and there about when you graduated college. But you completely failed to address why it is that you demand that I have more public accomplishments than you, and that they all be at a younger age than the earliest accomplishment on your list. Why is that a prerequisite to talk to you?
I should also note that I've developed applications as well, but they've been internal things for companies I've worked for, not packaged software sold in stores. Most programmers work is never seen by the public at all as most software written is for internal use. Having software you worked on being reviewed by a magazine is hardly the gold standard for what makes a good programmer.
Could you elaborate more on what exactly you did for this Superdisk-NT software? You mention increasing the speed of the software 40%. I assume you mean you increased the speed of the core functionality of the software, rather than just decreasing the programs loading time or something like that. What details can you give on how that 40% speed increase is calculated. Does it mean making the program operate the same, but use 40% less CPU time, or does it mean adding 40% to the average speed boost that the program grants to disk access?
I've sent an e-mail to superspeed's pr dept to try to reach Eric Dickman since you didn't provide any contact info. I imagine it will take time to get a reply. Can you tell me what year he offered you a job. Was it 2003 2003 or 1999. I sometimes get confused about the precise year of things that happened years ago as well.

That first link, in regards to you, says only:
Special thanks for good suggestions (in alphabetical order):
Alexander Peter Kowalski - Process priority control (not implemented yet).and the second link is to you contributing an icon, which wasn't accepted for the program as far as I can tell. Since what I wrote (and you clipped off halfway) was actually:
For Ultradefrag64, it looks like you contributed an icon that does not seem to have been accepted (it was a pretty nice icon, but might have been considered too derivative of other Windows icons, or it might just not have scaled down well to their size requirement) and suggested that they use a particular Windows API. In the credits, they thanked you for your suggestions. It was nice of you to contribute, but it's far from a towering achievement.
Unless there's some additional thing you did for that project that's contained in that link, then it looks like I'm not the one who needs to learn how to read.
As for my question about what was in those other magazine articles you quoted, I'm not saying you're lying about it, I'm saying that I don't have any access to those articles, so I don't know what's in them. So, why don't you just tell me? What applications of yours did they talk about in those magazines and what did they say (no need to quote in full, just a general overview).
Regarding your postscript. Are you trying to imply that I create additional accounts to jump into the conversation, pretending to be someone else, and support myself? Where exactly are you getting any indication I do this? Your imagination

Re:Ideal for HTPC
That benchmark puts the a low end Radeon 5450 at comparable to the best Intel graphics in some tests, and significantly outperforming it in other tests. Meanwhile, this benchmark puts the GF520 at somewhere around 50-100% better performance than the Radeon 5450, depending on the test. So yes, this card is far more powerful than anything Intel offers, but it's moot because no one looking for one of these cards or Intel graphics cares much about graphical performance.
-
Re:Performance
I can't imagine that you're going to be making the most of the hardware somehow.
Depends on what you do with it. Consider this article about PCI-Express scaling on a 5780... A lot of games get 75% FPS or above using only a 1x PCIe port compared to a 16x. Keep in mind that the 5870 is a high-end card, and the 520 is a low end, so I don't think the performance hit will be that bad.
-
Re:No bandwidth limiting yet
The test has been redone: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_5870_PCI-Express_Scaling/25.html and things haven't really changed.
Keep in mind that PCI-E 2.0 doubles bandwidth though, making todays 1x yesterdays 2x.

Time 2 BLOW U AWAY erroneus (part #5)
On 1 app of mine of 30 I put out over time, APK Registry Cleaning Engine 2002++ SR-7 (final build, perfect, never been found to have a known bug or flaw either):
"I'll skip the crappy registry cleaner utilities. There are hundreds of those all equally useless" - by erroneus (253617) on Tuesday June 21, @07:08PM (#36521452) Homepage
FIRST: They're EXTREMELY useful in forensics, I'll tell you THAT MUCH, firsthand!
How so?
I.E./E.G.-> Recently used filelists, one of the things it checks automagically & lists if INVALID!
For example, when & IF someone tries to delete files vs. self-incrimination? It will find it and sometimes in the case of child pr0n deviants by filename ALONE can help convict sick freaks like that!
How's that so far ERRONEOUS?
And, Mine turns up things you would NOT BELIEVE that tell you what a person's been up to in that very capacity... to get them convicted in fact!
Law enforcement's used it that way before!
(I do that level of work @ times professionally, AXA MONY being my last client in that capacity in fact)...
Even after std. deletes, secure deletes, or defrags... the system keeps a record (so does the $MFT in NTFS, not a lot of folks know that, it NEVER SHRINKS!)
AND, of course, they're naturally GOOD for what they're intended for as well by removing (and compacting away) registry "holes" (sort of like a DB Compaction so the file is smaller & not plagued as much by internal fragmentation)
And of course, here's mine (shameless plug), 1 of around 30 apps I put online while still a student in freeware/shareware (some are now in commercial apps like SuperSpeed.com/EEC Systems SuperDisk &/or SuperCache - highly esteemed wares that sell to this day 16++ yrs. after I made the code for them & ideas on how to use them effectively (which, only now, are being used for terminal servers, databases, website for BETTER/FASTER PERFORMANCE):
---
APK Registry Cleaning Engine 2002++ SR-7:
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/389/APK_Registry_Cleaning_Engine_2002++_SR-7_.html
---
IN fact, I challenged a competitor, Juoni Verio, to show his wares of that kind would not find as many entries to purge as mine did... his didn't (lol, then, he tried to "plug in" a "test dataset" (rigged to his regcleaner app's algorithm & still did not find more). We tested on clean systems users had, & mine dusted his!)

Mine do, do you have to ask (or are you just dumb)? See above, living proof!
Here's another "oldie but goodie" that "started the show" for me in this industry in fact, regarding 3dFx Voodoo Boards I/II/III for OpenGL graphics & gaming:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=%22APK+3d+Fx+Tuning+Engine%22&btnG=Google+Search
Still out there too, lol, amazing (even I didn't know that, as I rarely look into my wares anymore) & all over the web... lol! Cool!
Again, since I have asked this of you before?
HOW ABOUT YOU, ERRONEUS? What have YOU ever done in the way of software that did THIS well over time & only as a young man in academia only!
(Below's a SMALL, VERY PARTIAL ONLY list of my "favs" only, I have more as you can see above, those are only a FRACTION too that did pretty well!)

APK detected. If you Googled the name "Alexander Peter Kowalski" you would find these:

A nice bit using APK as an example of how to handle yourself when dealing with people "like these." APK is the poster child for this behavior.

More of the same from other people... complaints mostly and somewhere in there, his home address. Probably moved by now since many complaints about this nuisance date back before the year 2000... quite a career.

Here he is so infamous that he is registered with an acronym.
I'll skip the crappy registry cleaner utilities. There are hundreds of those all equally useless. And really... engine? Is that what a utility gets called? An engine?

Yet more indicating his stellar reputation as a contributing member of society who gets along well with everyone.
http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1010242&start=40
Another sample... these are dated 2001. I mean really. If a person goes a whole 10 years like this and everyone seems to respond to him in the same way, what sane person can believe that he's not the problem and that the rest of the world just wants to attack him for no good reason. This is just a person who will never look at himself as the source of his own problems.
"erroneus" spelled in this way is a kind of loop. Also, it was taken from an error message reported by old IRC server software after a user attempted to change his nick to something that is not allowed -- "erroneus nick change." Oh yeah, I go way back.
What I find amazing is that he replied to my same comment numerous times and then replied to his own replies numerous times. His replies are hilariously like elementary school tactics rather like calling someone "chicken" or in his case "...ran away!" As people go, APK is quite a piece of work and completely genuine I'm convinced. He's literally stuck in a kind of loop somehow. Tracking just what he does on Slashdot alone is quite impressive. He has to track individual targets all over the place checking and rechecking comments and threads to keep his fire burning. And it's not just here. It's other places too. This is probably the most angry and obsessive person I have ever witnessed. I am completely convinced that he's over-the-top mentally ill.

Amongst around another 30-40 apps I put out as shareware/freeware over time (did a LOT of that as a student in the early to late 1990's & "finalized them all" by 2001).
I loved it, hence, why I WISH there was a 64-bit Delphi that didn't use a runtime for
.NET!---
You're probably RIGHT about using DPMI too, but that's sort of "hokey" don't you think? Small bucket into higher memory out of conventional memory iirc... right??
APK
P.S.=> I'd love to port a lot of the wares I put out online into 64-bit models is why - without having to change the language (porting PASCAL to C/C++ or VB is cake though I think (well, not really "cake" but, doable))... apk

It's true ATI doesn't have NVIDIA quality drivers; I've never heard of ATI drivers destroying a card. The GTX 590 drivers, however, have a driver issue with their "power limiter" that is supposed to prevent card damaging overvolts. Then there is the whole fan debacle from the 196.75 drivers. I realize people are going say it's what they get for overclocking, but if you add a feature it isn't the user's fault for using it.

"AH hahahahaha. APK the network admin for an ISP? Sorry, I couldn't even keep a straight face when I said that." - by Anonymous Coward on Thursday January 13, @11:06AM (#34862780)
I have education around this science in the form of 2 degrees, 17 yrs. of professional hands-on "experience in the trenches" as both a network administrator AND software engineer, as well as a list of accomplishments noted well in respected written publications (see list below in my p.s.) in the art & science of computing dating back 1996-2009...
By the way: I also worked for CableVision of NYC for a year in the very capacity you try to mock me on too, no less (they're a big ISP/BSP) & on other jobs I was on I had to be a network administrator (even coding ones, because it helps you stay out of the fulltime network admin's hair once you show them you know what you're doing).
So - do you have the same, on either account (education, experience, or being well noted in publications of good note)?
DO YOU HAVE YOUR NAME/CODE IN COMMERCIALLY OFFERED SOFTWARES AS I DO?
Somehow?? I rather STRONGLY doubt it, on all accounts above...

"Critique is fundamental to design" - by 19061969 (939279) on Thursday January 06, @08:04AM (#34775158)
Agreed, 110% with an example thereof (per my subject-line above) - as an example of what users helped me make better, by pointing out useablity issues (2) & 1 "bug" (1) in it, which were corrected in the 9th yr. of its life:
---
APK Registry Cleaning Engine 2002++ SR-7:
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/389/APK_Registry_Cleaning_Engine_2002++_SR-7_.html
(With an example of user feedback + critique I used (& helped the poster there with) to make the program, better, & the users WERE RIGHT, so forums people helped me, help myself, though it was a BIT "stinging" to take (nobody likes critiques FULLY imo, but they're useful)).
---
"good & great designers actively seek out criticism." - by 19061969 (939279) on Thursday January 06, @08:04AM (#34775158)
LOL, which is the WHY of why I'd never call myself "a great developer"!
Even the "great ones" (Yes, I do think there are outstanding people out there, many largely unknown, some known though & I note one below) probably would say it's MOSTLY a matter of perseverance & hard work, imo @ least!
(AND, that they "stood on the shoulders of giants" before them (in fact, I have HEARD Mr. Anders Heijelsberg @ MS even say that + I agreed: We all use others' work before us in say, foundational libraries))
He was promoted to "distinguished engineer" @ MS faster than anyone ever had @ that point & probably now too (he built Turbo Pascal, Borland Delphi - my fav. here to this day), &
.NET largely too, for a point-of-reference here as to why I used his example... as I'll be HONEST here & say it's HARD TO TAKE sometimes, but again, per what I wrote already before this? It can be VERY useful!---
"Whether the criticism is worthwhile is another question, but any designer worth paying is big enough to deal with flack." - by 19061969 (939279) on Thursday January 06, @08:04AM (#34775158)
Especially if/when you're getting PAID to do a job... do it as right as you can? There's still room for improvement. As long as you keep that in mind, that software etc. is NOT "static"?? You're ok, but still, getting "ribbed on" for your hard work, is tough (speaking for myself @ least - I am, at best/most as a coder, an "I can get the job done" type, but by NO MEANS, a "great one").
---
"IMHE, I've found designers to be the most motivated solicitors of feedback." - by 19061969 (939279) on Thursday January 06, @08:04AM (#34775158)
It does help. There's nothing like testers... I've had it done to my work, & done it for others too!
E.G.-> I found and notified Dr. Mark Russinovich (& numerous times to Opera + Firefox teams) of "bugs" in his work (pagedefrag.exe) & told him HOW/WHERE/WHY to fix its code during Windows NT-based OS' bootstrap process (he had some hardcodes, & didn't realize you could move eventlogging for instance, & more).
He emailed me thanks @ the end of 2002 for it, which was cool. Plus the program was made better for it.
APK
P.S.=> Everyone here really has to realize that software design? It CAN REALLY BE, a MOVING TARGET! Especially over time & change in subsystems beneath it, or need for evolutions added!
Plus, then, IF/WHEN "bugs" or security vulnerabilities get found in your work? Well, means correction (on top of life's other duties, etc.) time... & systems + libraries you use DO CHANGE, so, it's a fact of life that software maintenance OR ADDITIONS to large systems (done over 1 million lines of code projects a few times in my 17 yr. long career around computing so far) will/does happen, get used to it!
I.E.-> Sometimes - it has to be "adapted" or "modified" (existing or new) at times to do its job! apk

Re:It is still different HW
From RTFA ( http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159 instead of the click-thru announcement / ad page linked in the summary
:P ), only a tiny amount of performance is gained by enabling the disabled shaders... (from the graphic only 2 out of 24 are disabled). Most of the performance match is accomplished by overclocking it 10% to match the higher spec card. The higher spec cards appear to have a beefier cooling hardware, though.
They needed to raise (effectively eliminating) the "PowerTune" limit to achieve identical / maximum performance, which pushes both cards to higher temperatures and power consumption. Otherwise, PowerTune appears to throttle the performance to keep power consumption down: the lower spec card throttles performance slightly more, perhaps due to less cooling. They show the GPU temperature as similar on both cards, but I've never known those thermistors to be very accurate.
It's probably not bad to be able to get a 10% improvement in a card that costs $60 less. I wouldn't mind the 5% increase in performance from enabling the extra shaders just on principle. But the rest of it doesn't seem worthwhile to reduce the life of the PC / GPU.
-
Overclocking guide
An overclocking guide can be found here. You *might* get problems under extreme load, because the 6950 uses the 6-pin power connector, whereas the 6970 can draw more power, because it uses the 9-pin connector.

up to six LCDs
This is what I'm interested in: "....six display controllers offering six TMDS links. This lets users connect up to six displays to as independent display heads, or span display heads across multiple physical displays using the Eyefinity technology. The new HDMI 1.4a connector standard is made use of, which gives you support for stereoscopic 3D standards such as Blu-ray 3D, the two mini-DisplayPort 1.2 connectors support Multi-Stream technology that let you daisy-chain 3 physical displays per connector, letting you wrap up a 6-display Eyefinity array using just those two connectors."
Sounds great! Tired of selling an old monitor to buy a new one that's 2" larger and a few hundred more pixels, much rather just get a second (or third, or fourth, etc) same-sized LCD and double the pixels. -
Re:Nvidia can only hope...
It's a non-reference design using a superior voltage regulator module and it slightly undervolts the core and has no cooling fan to power. Here's the charts.

Re:Little Flawed study.
This is why software based raid is the way to go for ultimate performance. The big SAN providers ought to be shaking in their boots when they look at what's possible using software like starwind or open-e with host-based raid controllers and SSDs. Just for example, look at this thing - if you added a couple cx4 adapters and run open-e you've got a 155,000iop/s iSCSI target there in what's basically a $30k workstation. 3PAR will sell you something the size of a refrigerator for $500,000 that wouldn't even perform as well.
-
Oops. I forgot to plan the array
He's got a point - the embedded RAID controllers in boxes like the HP MSA70 just aren't up to the challenge of sustaining the IOPS of SSDs. They weren't designed for that, so you can't get a million I/Os per second by accident. You have to know what you're doing and build out an architecture that can support it.
OTOH: Who pays 100K for one of those? That has to be including the Enterprise 120GB SSD's at $4k each, right?
What 200k IOPs might look like (not mine).

Re:Sure
Supposedly, with modern hard drives, the need for repeatedly overwriting data is gone.
A single pass with
/dev/zero should make the drive unrecoverable. There was a whole challenge about it, though it's now ended and was never accepted. From http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=79982
Q. What is this?
A. A challenge to confirm whether or not a professional, established data recovery firm can recover data from a hard drive that has been overwritten with zeros once. We used the 32 year-old Unix dd command using
/dev/zero as input to overwrite the drive. Three data recover companies were contacted. All three are listed on this page. Two companies declined to review the drive immediately upon hearing the phrase 'dd', the third declined to review the drive after we spoke to second level phone support and they asked if the dd command had actually completed (good question). Here is their response... paraphrased from a phone conversation:"According to our Unix team, there is less than a zero percent chance of data recovery after that dd command. The drive itself has been overwritten in a very fundamental manner. However, if for legal reasons you need to demonstrate that an effort is being made to recover some or all of the data, go ahead and send it in and we'll certainly make an effort, but again, from what you've told us, our engineers are certain that we cannot recover data from the drive. We'll email you a quote."

On parallelism, I can agree, but w/ reservations
"If you really wanted to do hardware-specific optimizations today, you'd probably be better off finding parts of the code where you can execute things in parallel. You could get good performance benefits from multicore processors." - by w32jon (1317789) on Friday February 12, @05:21AM (#31110988)
This from you, vs. your other post reply here -> http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1546446&cid=31114804
This much I can agree on... but, with "reservations" (per my subject-line above). Why? Well... here is why:
The ONLY question here is, is actually FINDING the parallelism...
So you know, I do actually speak from decades of professional experience on that account here!
(E.G.-> I've been writing multithreaded & even EXPLICITLY parallellized code (via Win32 API calls for processors present creation + API methods/functions/calls like "SetThreadAffinity" or "SetProcessAffinity" even, but I usually do what's called "coarse multithreading" because it's less work & the fact that today's Process Scheduling Kernel mode subsystems can take care of sending parent &/or child threads to less/least CPU cycle saturated processors, for me... without ME having to do it via my own scheduling for that much... I've done that, professionally + for 'fun' too, & for over 15++ years now here, example thereof here -> http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/389/APK_Registry_Cleaning_Engine_2002++_SR-7_.html & here too -> http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/390/APK_Matrix_ScreenSaver.html as evidences thereof in freewares alone, many more in commercial code or enterprise class business apps usually... )
Finding tasks that lend to "coarse multithreading" is tough enough, but for "fine grained multithreading"? What DOES lend itself to that, is often prone to race conditions for example, & it is NOT as easy to do as "coarse multithreading" is.
E.G. on "COARSE MULTITHREADING" -> Recalc 1 workshee's cells in a spreadsheet in 1 THREAD, while printing another worksheet of said spreadsheet via ANOTHER THREAD... easier to do by far, because diff. datasets are being worked on.
E.G. on "FINE GRAINED MULTITHREADING" -> In the same datafile, attempting to reformat it's interior format while taking said data & putting it out to a printer... this IS tougher, but NOT "the greatest example" thereof though on my part, admittedly.
BAD MOVE would be trying to put this on 2 diff. threads:
A=B+C
B=A+DWhere B has to wait out B completing first, so what's the point of using two diff threads here (1 for Operation A, & 1 for Operation B)? None... they "block" one another.
APK
P.S.=> Hope you caught my drift, & I wasn't trying to be mean, but in the URL above in your first comment? I covered MOST of what you noted too... you just skimmed it seems, without reading my replies to others here perhaps... apk

Testing video card?
It's not just for ATI. Has a card stressing feature.
Another program to note is something like: speedfan
I can't count how many times a problem was directly caused by high temperatures on the cpu, gpu, etc.
And one more tool which I keep in my toolbox:
A quick run of it gives you a visual representation of the hard drive. I've fixed several problems by seeing that crap needs to get deleted.
Good luck!

Re:Q6600
Actually the new Sempron 140 has AMD-V.. It can also unlock into a dual core. As always, even though AMD can't compete on the high end, they can almost always compete on the low end and lower mid-range.

I'm with you, in 110% agreement, OrangeTide!
Turbo Pascal & Microsoft C gave me my start doing DOS programming back in 1991 or thereabouts, & later in academia (still on 8088's initially, until the Comp. Sci. dept. @ my school purchased a load of 486 33mz CPU based Intel rigs that is) then, that opened the "world of Windows" to myself & others there (which WAS totally cool, "art & science in 1 package" imo, is what graphical computing really is), & back then, you had the BBS (bulletin board systems) to post your wares onto.
My fav. compiler back then, & even still now?
Borland Delphi!
(I used it from version 1.0 for 16-bit computing, into 3.0-7.0 for Win32 development, for shareware/freeware creation)
It is the fastest compiler & produces the fastest code, especially in math & strings that there is, proven so in of all places, VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMER'S JOURNAL Sept./Oct. 1997 issue, titled "Inside the VB5 Compiler"!
That is where Delphi 2.0 absolutely WHOOPED Visual Basic 5.0 &/or MSVC++ 6.0 even, in 7/10 tests administered, but especially in math & strings work (even DOUBLING MSVC++ in strings work), which as you know, EVERY program does work in)...
I had some fun in that area over time, to build my coding skills "above & beyond" MIS/IS/IT databasing type work (which is most of what I have found work in, the "steady eddy" end of the field, since no 2 businesses manage or keep their data the same as the next one does, so this type of work abounds, especially in custom DB work for say, Customer or inventory mgt. apps, reporting, & far more).
Do I still do shareware/freeware? No... but, my wares are still 'floating around' online for others to use/enjoy etc. et al such as this one -> http://www.techpowerup.com//downloads/389/foowhatevermakesgooglehappy.html or this one -> http://www1.techpowerup.com//downloads/390/APK_Matrix_ScreenSaver.html
There are others, but, I don't keep their links bookmarked anymore.
APK
P.S.=> I'd especially recommend that kind of work, doing shareware/freeware, to YOUNG programmers especially - it opens the door to what I feel IS the "final stage of evolution" for any person interested in computing, & that is programming (the most difficult of them all, because YOU invent the tools, not just use them + you really learn HOW THINGS WORK on a computer in doing so), especially to "round out" their skillset, fully (or, as completely as possible - but, "perfections' a road, not a destination" so, the "battle never ends", especially because things change SO much in this science over time)... apk

Almost good for NAS...
I keep seeing new boards like this come out, hoping one will have all the features I want for an ideal NAS (network attached storage) build. Right now, there is always some trade-off for what I want. Show me the board that has...
- Support for ECC RAM. AFAIK, all modern AMD CPUs all support ECC RAM. Seems like AMD should be able to make something that competes with the Atom on the low-wattage side of things. A full-blown 4850e or even Sempron is overkill.
- At least six SATA ports. Eight to 10 would be perfect. Modern Intel (ICH10) and AMD (SB700) chipsets seem to max out at six SATA ports. And Intel likes to pair the Atom with even older chipsets (ICH7 I think) that support at most four SATA ports.
- A PCIe x16 slot. Not necessary if and only if the motherboard has everything needed integrated. This requirement is really just a stop-gap, assuming the board itself will lack some crucial feature. Or for providing for unforseen future expansion.
- A built-in compact flash slot. My understanding is that PATA and CF are closely related (one is a subset of the other maybe?)... in this day and age, I would imagine PATA controllers are dirt cheap. But the idea is to use CF as the system drive, i.e. the place to hold the OS and config files. (You could also use USB + thumb drive, so as a compromise I'd settle for an on-board USB socket into which a thumb drive can be directly plugged.)
- At least one Gigabit LAN port, preferably a high quality controller like Intel makes. Two Gigabit ports for bonding would be ideal.
- Super-low power CPU. The load on this machine will be virtually all I/O. Intel Atom, AMD Geode, or even ARM should suffice.
- Chipset with sufficient IO muscle and integrated video without the high power consumption. The chipset Intel is supplying with the Atom is awful from a power consumption perspective (actually, none of Intel's chipsets are particularly low-power). AMD's 740G and 780G look decent, but still have way over-powered video. Super old school, VGA only video is sufficient. I'd even be happy with serial console only.
One board comes close: the VIA NAS 7800, but it doesn't appear to be available to the general public. And I don't see anything about supporting ECC memory. For no reason other than hearsay, I'm not so sure I'd trust important data to a Via chipset.
The next best, IMO (and I actually have one of these), is the Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2. Check out SilentPCReview's writeup on this board. Only problem: I'm not sure if it supports ECC or not (AMD CPUs do, but I've heard it still requires the motherboard vendor to enable it). One annoying problem is that the PCIe x16 slot is for video only---you can't put a SATA controller card, extra NIC or anything else useful to a NAS in there. Still, while it's a very low-power board when paired with the right CPU, it's still overkill for a NAS. In general, I think the power draw for a NAS (excluding the hard drives) should be under 15 Watts.
The Point of View Ion/Atom board linked above looks promising. But, as far as I can see, no compact flash, and probably no ECC memory support.
