They do IMAP now. Thunderbird's FAQ told me how to do it.

This story blurb is going to upset Opera users
All 7 of them. Some of them apparently liked ads. Me, I like blocking them.

Re:just plain exerciseOne of the many awesome extensions for FireFox is flashblock, which replaces flash objects with an icon that you can click to allow that 1 flash object to display. I still boycott flash based sites to the extent that I reasonably can, but every once in a while you want to see flash content, and the extension makes that easy.
-
Re:also
Tabbrowser Preferences extension allows you to change your preference to open all new windows in tabs as well.
Lots of other nifty menu options for this one within Windows as well. Doesn't seem as robust on my linux box but that's probably due to my ignorance, not the extension. -

Re:Sad news
This works for Firefox, too, and is documented on the website.
Some tweaking can be useful, as it blocks images that are certain sizes most used by banners. This can cause legitimate images to be allowed through. -
DoubleClick is still around?
It's been so long since I've seen an ad I forgot about them.
-
Re:Thank God for Adblock
Everyone always talks about Adblock. Mozilla.org has a great tip that gets rid of virtually all ads without needing to install anything. Just go to to:
http://texturizer.net/firefox/adblock.html
and follow the directions there. -
Re:Good...
Ya but as soon as everyone moves to a browser with pop-up blocking, advertisers will move to something even more annoying and pop-up blocking will no longer be feature, just an unofficial standard.
Hopefully Flash will take over since this extension already exists and works quite well:

Re:A minor story
For situations like yours, it is possible to run Firefox and your profile (with your extensions, bookmarks, etc.) completely from a USB thumb drive.
-
BugMeNot
There's a Firefox extension that solves this problem: BugMeNot. It keeps a database of known good registrations, and you can add your own and report back any that stop working.

FLASH! Firefox + FlashBlock prevent Slashdotting
Check out FlashBlock, an extension for Firefox which "[a]dds an XBL binding to Shockwave Flash object tags that replaces them with a button you must click in order to play the animation. Quite nice for restoring sanity to your browsing session."
Indeed. -
Re:Firefox is faster
Firefox...doesn't start rendering the page when it gets it's first byte
Can be modified in user.js -- see Speed up page rendering from Texturizer.net's Firefox Tips & Tricks. -
Re:Obligatory FireFox Boosterism
Then I find that I can't tell what tab's what since the text it used for them was too big (and I never found a way to change it, even in the extra options extension).
You're right, I think that should be an option available through the UI. In the meantime, you can work around it by putting the following in your userChrome.css file and restarting the browser:
tab { font-size: 90%; }This isn't meant as a troll, it's meant to prompt some serious thought. I'm a SysAdmin and I even had promblems in the install process (with extensions granted, but that's more than enough to kill off your average joe-user).
Joe-user shouldn't have to install a lot of extensions. What functionality that the "joe-users" use is missing from Firefox?

Re:At the risk of being flamed...
Are you complaining about the dialog boxes thaw show up saying "Connection Refused" etc? Displaying an error web page instead of Dialog boxes is one of the biggest issues to be resolved in Mozilla/Firefox.
If you're a developer/tester and have time, please help fix this.
If you want to reload a page every now and then there is an Extension for it. Reload Every. -
Re:Slackware
Slackware was my first distro too can't remember the version, but it was pre version 1 - old man
:-(.
I've just installed Vector Linux 4.0 on my laptop and on an older desktop - it's a good way into a fast efficient no-frills linux system. I'm a windows developer so my work laptop is a w2k machine, to make it bearable I've installed niceties such as bash, gvim and perl. You could use Bochs machine emulator to run w2k under linux. If you dual boot, you can use thunderbird email on a dual boot system with a single mailbox.
Vector linux is easy to install and configure, forget all the folks who think a gui is essential for everything, as a windows developer you'll already know how to hack your way through the registry and various config files. That's all you need to do with slackware too. -
You have all those options in Mozilla!
With Firefox/Mozilla extensions you can:
Take quick notes
Nuke an image
Save your sessions
But since I don't want those extensions, I don't have them installed. Less bloat for me! Hope this helps... -

Re:IE User
there is an extension you can download that will add an "Open link in IE" option to the context menu
IE View
by Paul Roub
http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#ieview
Version: 0.8
File Size: 22 KB
Updated: 2004-06-15
Adds "View page in Internet Explorer" links to the content and link context menu. Handy for previewing pages in IE, loading up IE-only pages when you run across them in Mozilla, etc.

Check the firefox faq:
The texturizer firefox faq has the details.
I didn't use the xpinstall method, I just downloaded the java runtime from suns site and installed it, it detected firefox and installed the java plugin automagically. -
Re:Article Text (site seems slow)
Opera has an option to start where you left off last time, Mozilla has the Session Saver extension.

How to move passwds from 1 zilla install 2 anotherSome other guy on
/. posted this info before (probably also posted on mozillazine.org), but I'll put it here for your info.- find your profile folder (in windows, it defaults to C:\documents and settings\$user\application data\phoenix... )
- OPen your prefs.js (or go to about.config) and search for the following keys:
- wallet.SchemaValueFileName
- signon.SignonFileName
- In your profile directory, copy those filenames "21321321.s, 789789798.w" to your new profile directory.
- Finally, I usually also copy over my bookmarks.html.. but this is trivial if you have this extension.
Seriously, a profile synchronizer or the ability to sync your passwords/form data between zilla installs on different machines would totally rule.

Re:Great idea but....
And as others gave mentioned, the reason I like Firefox is that it's only a browser. I don't want or need a browser that tries to be a poor substitute for several other programs, like a cheaply made Swiss Army knife -- I want a browser that is just as good a browser as possible.
So it doesn't bother you that Firefox is not only a browser but also a poor substitute for Tetris and Minesweeper? -

Re:ideas
TabBrowser extensions are massively bloated, and the number of options is bewildering, even to an experienced user. It is best to use some of the smaller extensions writtent to duplicate the functions you need.
For opening new window link in new tabs, use Single Window
I also use rue's rewritten implementation of Pike's Session Saver for the recovery of tabs after a crash (only happened once in recent memory, but useful still), and disable all the other features as they annoy me. This version is repackaged for 0.9
The last extension I use to do with tabs (don't think it was in TBE, but essential for me still) is Flowing Tabs, which shrinks the sizes of the tabs to the title text if it is short (otherwise keeps them default size), and continues many tabs onto a second or third and so forth line rather than shrinking them until you can't see what's written.
-
Re:"Remember" tabsi would like to see a feature where when you close firefox it "remembers" what pages you had in what tabs, similar to what opera does
Try the Session Saver plugin.

Here's a suggestion:
Make it an extension only!
Seriously, it would be a really neat feature if some of the suggestions posted here were realized... but this whole idea screams of bloat bloat bloat. What makes FireFox so appealing for some (including me) is it's compactness and lack of bells and whistles. The FireFox project FAQ echos these sentiments: It's small, fast, simplified, nothing other than what you need. "Just a browser"
Don't let feature creep ruin it!

Opera convert to Firefox, love them extensions
A bit offtopic, I know, but the recent IE scares got me thinking about all my browser installations. I converted from the ad-based Opera to Firefox, as I found it was an (almost) good enough replacement. Now that Firefox allows me to easily uninstall extensions, it has become the best free (in context with my cold Michelob) browser out there.
My boss likes it better than IE, and I haven't shown him any of the neat tricks yet! Be sure to get the Tabbrowser Extensions by Shimoda Hiroshi, available with many others at texturizer.net, and check out the other cool toys there, too. Enough to keep folks busy playing with so they won't care about downloading spyware for a while.

Re:Everything is easy
Carry your complete Firefox install on your USB stick, from which it will run fine.
I do have firefox on a USB key and I find it handy to have at times. This is excellent advice in most situations and therefore anyone who'd interested in doing so I point to the Firefox help site
Unfortunately, due to the cheapskates that they are - easyinternetcafe does not support USB and a lot of locations their USB ports have been disabled so in these cases a download of the fox is the only thing to do. -
Re:My two cents
Already done.
Isn't that what the article is about? -
I must ask...
...which site? And do other sites render worse in IE than they do in Firefox?
As for migrating from IE, I've never had a problem encouring people. The built-in popup blocker is almost an instant 'OK! I'm converted!'. This may or may not be helpful: http://texturizer.net/firefox/faq.html
Perhaps, distribute a company-wide email, linking to a download for Firefox (put it on a local server, first, link to that, save Moz the bandwidth. ;) and give the end users the option to switch. The upside? They get to waste an hour of company time moving into a new browser. :-p And less work for the ITS guys. -

Re:Our Blessed IT guy
Change the IE links to launch Firefox.
I bet most of them won't even notice. And if you want to go the extra mile, change the theme on them to something more IE-like (although I'm kindof hazy as to what IE looks like anymore, I've been using Opera so much...) -
Re:I HATE tabbed browsing
Get an extension that disables tabs: Tab Killer.

Re:The problem with Camino
Or you could just use Firefox's excellent userContent.css file. I've never had a problem using this, and someone takes care to update it every once in a while with new rules. Most likely your version is an older copy.
With Safari, I just tell Safari to Camino's userContent.css file as its style sheet and ads are gone on Safari as well. -
Re:Slashdot Ad
Haha... you still have ads! You should block them!
-
Re:Coming events
No need. Your can run Firefox from removable media. Just get yourself a USB memory stick or USB micro drive, and follow the installation instructions.
Do this for a few power users, and within a very short time, the IE-only requirement goes away pretty fast.
-
Google Toolbar on Linux
Use Firefox, and get this.

Re:Why not in firefox?
Try this on for size
;)
Load the extension, turn it on, make the FF window small so it fits the window. Looks like with a few chrome tweaks its ready to rock. -
Re:Thunderbird Wishlist
6. How about a text mode interface for uberhackers? It could be really lightweight, just ctrl- to go back and forth, ctrl-r to reply, etc...
If it's keyboard shortcuts you're after, look at this list of Thunderbird keyboard shortcuts. -
Re:Awesome!
It looks a bit like Firefox Grey Modern.
-
Re:Firefox + Thunderbird = Mozilla?
Check this extension for Firefox out. It gives the tabs in Firefox more options and features that you could poke a stick at. And also has just very recently been updated to work with 0.9 properly.

Re:Firefox + Thunderbird = Mozilla?from http://texturizer.net/firefox/faq.html#q1.3:
What's the difference between Firefox and Mozilla?
Similarly, Thunderbird is a standalone mail client. For most people, Firefox and Thunderbird will fit just as well as (if not better than!) Mozilla; if you want a IRC client and a HTML editor, then I would suggest you use Mozilla.
Mozilla (Application Suite, also known as SeaMonkey) is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Firefox is just a browser, which makes it a better choice if you already have a mail client for example. Also, since Firefox is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's faster and easier to use. Note, though, that Firefox is not just the standalone Mozilla browser. The user interface in Firefox differs from Mozilla in many ways. For example, Firefox has customizable toolbars. -
Re:Mozilla vs. thunderbird for email.
Taken from Mozilla.org's FAQ...
What's the difference between Thunderbird and the Mozilla Mail client?
Mozilla is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Thunderbird is just a mail client, which makes it a better choice if you already have a browser like Firefox for example.
Note, though, that Thunderbird is not just the standalone Mozilla mail client. The user interface in Thunderbird differs from Mozilla in many ways, such as the customizable toolbars, a brushed up theme and cleaner appearance. Also, since Thunderbird is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's also faster and easier to use.

Re:I don't care how many people Mozilla touches or
It's fast, it's stable, and I don't have any problems viewing any pages out there.
The only time I use IE is when MSN Messenger insists on opening IE to check Hotmail.
IE crashes 50% of the time I do this. While browsing Hotmail.
Also, what has several years of ActiveX and other MS "component" technology brought for the general web surfing public ? Nothing but useless toolbars, browser hijackers and similar malware.
Does MS run a site like the follwing ?
Extensions.
Or this Themes
Or this.Mycroft.
Dont even want to talk about the other IE "wrappers" like Avant, CrazyBrowser and MyIE... can they even hold a candle against Mozilla/Firefox. -

Re:Mozilla
From the FireFox FAQ:
What's happening with the Firefox development?
Firefox will be used as the default browser in Mozilla. The current Mozilla suite will be replaced by stand-alone applications.
