Re:Deus XXX: Rated H
Then check out The Dark Mod. It's an original Thief-inspired fan-made game that seems to get some pretty good reviews. Last I checked it was a series of user-made maps without much of an overarching story, but if all you really want is a series of missions to try out it might be your thing.

The Dark Mod
Go play The Dark Mod instead: http://www.thedarkmod.com/main...
Free, now standalone so despite the name you don't need Doom 3 to play it, plus it's cross-platform. You basically download missions through the in-game downloader, most of them really, really good, and get your proper Thief experience instead of the watered-down bullshit that this new Thief game provides.

A stealth alternative

Re:There are several good indie titles
Speaking of stealth games, Slashdot recently had an article on, The Dark Mod, which has totally sucked me in, as much to play, as create thieving missions (of which there are over 70 already, averaging a couple released monthly), which is kind of like a puzzle in itself, figuring out the best way to implement your desired game-play elements.

Re:relevant?
Doom 3 and now the source code for Doom 3 have enabled The Dark Mod. That's good enough for me.

Thanks for the update! If you get a chance, stop by The Dark Mod forums to discuss your findings. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/

Re:Who Does This help
It will help The Dark Mod - we look forward with extreme joy to the release, so we can ifx alot of issues that arise due to the D3 code being closed, and so a couple of things not possible for us.
It will also make it possible to release a stand-alone version of TDM, one that does't people to buy, patch and install Doom 3.
Here is a (partial) List of things that we want to fix.
-
Re:Who Does This help
This helps The Dark Mod team, among others. There are many bug fixes and improvements that can only be made once the source code is released.

Re:Goldeneye remake -- any good?
Thief - not exactly a remake, it is "inspired by Thief and improves it" and in my opinion (which is biased as I am one of the developers
:) is much better:http://www.thedarkmod.com/ (see also http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod)

No System Shock?
How disappointing.
The game was waaaay ahead of its time with a large variety of weapons, alternate ammo and power modes, gobs of explosives and grenades and landmines, upgrades for the player (jumpjet boots, powered skates, night/infrared vision, a camera for the back of your freaking head!), stat boosting drugs with side effects, objectives/tasks, cyberspace in that laughable 1990's 3d style... Oh, it's glorious. AND IT WAS RELEASED IN 1994!
I suppose I'll just have to keep hoping to interest in remaking the engine or remaking the game using the System Shock 2 engine rekindles.
At least Thief got a decent remake of sorts on Doom 3 engine. http://www.thedarkmod.com/

Re:That's because there wasn't
Don't forget "The Dark Mod", a Thief-inspired total conversion for Doom3, which is a fully functional game in itself, with over 20 missions already to play. And it is Open Source (including the source code and the assets), already at v1.03 and continuing to deliver new content and features
:)Enjoy!

Re:That's because there wasn't
It wasn't a total flop. You just don't know every decent Doom 3 TC. For instance, now I'm not expert on Doom 3 mods (because, frankly, I monitor open source games) but I still know about the excellent The Dark Mod - a total conversion Thief-inspired game. I'm sure there's plenty more.

Re:Poll; what was the best game created on Doom 3?
The Dark Mod is the best TC created on Doom 3. The Dark Mod

Re:Why I like Unreal
Glad to be of help! And when you grab Doom3, be sure to check out The Dark Mod, which was just released and doesn't have too many maps yet. They will probably appreciate all the help they can get from competent mappers. (Not barely-qualified ever-noobs like me who made a few really horrible Q3 maps. It will be years before I'll make a good mission for this mod. They seem to have terrifyingly high standards. =)
-
And a random sideline...
...those who can't wait should check out The Dark Mod for Doom 3 - a toolkit for building Thief 1/2 style missions in a reasonably modern game engine. The two alpha missions so far looked extremely good.
Wonder which will be released first, TDM or Thief 4?

Re:How about Deus Ex and System Shock 1/2?
Thief 3 hated? Hadn't heard that...
OK, so it had its peculiarities, but to this very day I am still scared of the Shalebridge Cradle.
I saw a website where they were working on a Thief-like mod for Doom3: The Dark Mod. Looked quite good. Even had the rope arrow ladder thingy. I wonder if they'll ever finish.

Re:Thief and thievery
http://www.thieveryut.com/
ThieveryUT is great. It's a little bit fast-paced to get the thief experience down, though. OTOH, I suppose it has to be, or else it would suck to be a guard. :)
On a related note:
Check out this work-in-progress: http://sourceforge.net/projects/opde -- the OpenDarkEngine. It's currently pretty much a game framework and map viewer, but it's moving along handily since the new head dev took over and switched the system to use the Ogre rendering engine. Object rendering was just added a couple of days ago, scripting and properties work is next, and they could use help if there are any good coders out there. Screenshots here: http://darkfate.ru/index.cgi?thumbs=files/projects/opde/screenshots (the "screenshot object" images are the most recent. Yeah, they could use a sorting or dating system on that site.)
I should note that this will work for Thief 1, Thief Gold, Thief 2, AND System Shock 2. (Consider it like a spiritual successor to the failed System Shock Hack Project, which did a lot of work to decipher the various file formats.) And ---YES IT RUNS ON LINUX.--- Mac will probably work, too.
There's also the Dark Mod, a Thiefish mod for Doom 3 that's underway. http://www.thedarkmod.com/ It won't run the original levels, though, so you'll have to wait for remakes to be made, and all the excellent fan missions will be super-extra-no-way unless OpDE is finished.. Good news is they've done a lot of work on recreating Thief's sound propagation, and this work could probably be shared with OpDE, and AI and sound are the two big hurdles for any Thief remake.

Re:Hardware Architecture is different now
I haven't been in touch with the fan scene but I doubt you can get Thief 2 to play on Vista and even on Xp with the latest drivers if you have a high end videocard that has been out for over a year now.

Game makers
For me the addiction is to create a game, not to play it (anymore). Does this make me a dealer? And for all the junkies here on slashdot I have some serious stuff for you to get off http://www.thedarkmod.com/

Re:Not Sony
The law says you can't distribute stuff without a proper license. That implies something like a international unified law. What is 'The law' that you are refering to? As to Sony. If Sony buys the rights to distribute this DRM software from another company, than it HAS a valid license. The vendor has to know wether he has the rights or not, and if there are strings attached to it, then he should inform Sony that there are certain conditions to be met when it wants to redistribute it. So the question is more, what is the contractual relationship between Sony and the vendor? On a similar vein I'm developing a community project. A total conversion for Doom 3 http://www.thedarkmod.com./ There are developers sending in code and they put it into CVS which is my own server standing in my home. When I distribute this software to our beta testers you could say in the same vein that I'm responsible for the code, but I'm not. Because I tell teh developers that they have to make sure that they indeed have the copyright to the code they send me, or if they don't have the copyright themself (because they took the code from some other library) they must have at least made sure that they have the rigth to redistribute it. This is a normal procedure. Even more, even if I would look at each and every piece of the code (which I do for new members) I could never recognize that this code may belong to somebody else. I have to take their word for it and can just check it for functional requirements. So if Sony bought the rights from All4Internet then this is all they should need to know, until somebody brings it to their attention. As soon as Sony is made aware of it, of course they would have to stop shipping and clear things up with their vendor, but up until them I think you would have a hard time claiming a copyright violation on Sony's part. Of course this is pure speculation as I don't know the actual agreement between Sony and All4Internet.

Re:On point 2: games are all the same
I'm playing it now, too! In a way, I do miss the guards not casting their own shadows (T:DS), but I'll take the expansive levels anyday.
I'm also really looking forward to what the Thief community can do with the editor for Deadly Shadows as well as the darkmod project http://www.thedarkmod.com/ for Doom 3 (using the Doom 3 engine to make a thief-like game engine).
