Re:yes, but
Yep, takes a while. Most don't make it. A rare few do. Might I point out T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age?
It's a Thief 2 mod, complete with its own story, dialog, textures and models, and even movies.
Still, it's a pretty old game. Does anyone know of a similar effort for anything more recent?

Awesome, awesome game
This game is one of the best PC games of its kind that was ever released. Splinter Cell, which is awesome in its own right, doesn't come close to the atmosphere and environment of the Thief series, especially Thief 2. And I defy anyone who loves these games to play the Sanitarium level of Thief 3 and not be freaked out. I wish that a Thief 4 would be in the works.
:( Until then, I guess Assassin's Creed is the closest successor, although it's not quite the same thing.
Oh, speaking of Thief 2, I highly recommend the T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age fan-made expansion pack. It's the best Thief mod out there in my opinion. YMMV, of course.
Praise, Karras! :) -
about Thief

http://sourceforge.net/projects/opde -- not yet there, but something to watch out for -
FYI: Thief 2x
is keeping the Theif franchise alive. And it's damn good

Re:Bioshock has me reeled in.
Personally what I love about Thief is that you can play it however you like. Its similar to Dues Ex or System Shock in that respect, only it doesn't rely on any real RPG elements to achieve it. You're just presented with a problem and its up to you to figure things out. This can result in a HUGE variety of playstyles... everything from the sexiness of a perfect "Lytha style" or "Ghost style" run where you don't touch any guards, make any noises, or leave any evidence of you ever being there (besides the fact that anything valuable and not bolted to the floor is missing); to the insanity of a no-stealth dagger run where you charge in the front door (if possible) and go flying over guards' heads, looting and killing like you were a pirate in a cloak.
Man that was a fun series. T1 was great, T2 was amazing (be SURE to check out T2X, a fan made 'expansion' that's suprisingly good!), and I know this is blasphemy, but I even enjoyed T3 even with its taint of Consolitis. -
Re:Thief: The Dark Project
God, the Cradle... a part of my soul will forever remain trapped on that level. I haven't felt the same since playing it. I guess it remembers me, and just doesn't want to let me go...
Speaking of Thief, anyone with a copy of Thief 2 knocking around who hasn't yet downloaded T2x: Shadows of the Metal Age really should do so. It has some of the best levels I've yet seen in the series. The missions set in the City are fantastic, and the first undead-themed mission was immersive and unsettling enough to make me put off playing the one that happens later in the game. Fortunatly I really cleaned out the Grand Hotel and have managed to stock up plenty of fire arrows. -
More "Thief" to hold you over for now.
I fully agree that we need more "Thief". Without question one of the most immersive game series ever created. And -- horrors! -- rich with story! Imagine that!
But let's not get TOO hasty! "Thief: Deadly Shadows" was only released less than a year ago! (Contrary to what another poster says, I thought that "Thief: DS" was phenomenal! If someone was not totally freaked out out by the sanitarium level, then that person must be bereft of the ability to have an emotional reaction.)
For the time being, I strongly recommend "T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age" at http://www.thief2x.com/default2.asp. This "Thief 2" add-on is just as good as the full game. I was very impressed by it. -
I hope the Thief III Editor is still released.A few months ago Ion Storm said that the release of a map editor for Thief III was forthcoming. This is vital to a large number of people; Thief I and II have had dozens of individual fan made levels that are actually higher quality than most commercial games - as well as several campaigns.
An editor for Thief III would drastically lengthen the games' shelf life, but with the studio closed, I suppose the chances are slim...
It's unfortunate - the latest expansion for Thief II (T2X - Shadows of the Metal Age) just hit beta, and will be released shortly - years after the original game came out. The Thief community is one of the most productive out there, and it'd be a shame for Eidos to ignore that. With a Thief III editor, it wouldn't suprise me to see people still making maps in 2010.
