What does SUSE offer what other distros don't?
I have not tried the SUSE Ver. 10 yet and curious to know following:
1. What does SUSE offer what other distros don't offer?
2. Can third party programs such as Google Earth, etc be installed securely without using root like in Tomahawk Desktop? Eg. http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/google-earth.html
3. Can the multimedia files be stored in once place so that all desktop users can share them without wasting disk storage? Eg. http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/home-common.html -

Re:Its a legal issue
This is precisely the point. The MP3 is a patented technology. This is why you should switch to ogg or FLAC. Sadly not many players support ogg and FLAC. Audio quality wise, ogg is similar to MP3, both lossy codecs intended for armatures. Lossy means drop quality to achieve a smaller file size.
Btw, FLAC is a high-definition codec, if you are a audiophile, that's what you should use, not MP3. FLAC is a lossless codec.
If you really want to use MP3, use Tomahawk Desktop.

Tomahawk Desktop: If you want a stable OS
Hey, Ubuntu 6.06 is a beta product, not a stable release. Some of the packages including Linux kernel are beta versions! If you want to risk yourself and want to help them to identify bugs, yes, use it.
If you want a stable Linux based multimedia OS, I suggest Tomahawk Desktop. It's KDE based, so may not be suitable for Gnome fanatics. But it is suitable for people who want something just works.
I personally use Tomahawk Desktop with Windows dual boot. Its very easy to set up a Windows dual boot with Tomahawk Desktop. I'm not handicapped by the issues both Windows and Linux users face
:) -
It should be usable, not just operational
I deeply appreciate Nicholas Negroponte's efforts to make $100 laptop for students. This is not a project to make profits but to give to poor students may be at a loss.
Students are not a inferior lot. Every generation they are smarter than their parents and it has to be that way for human evolution.
Never ever think its because they are students their requirements are not as sophisticated as adults. Students' requirements in most cases far exceed adults' requirements.
Its good Negroponte decided to use a Linux on these laptops. I personally use a flavour of Linux named Tomahawk Desktop. This is a new multimedia Linux. I call it poor man's Apple.
Lets see what I do with it. I use Tomahawk Desktop to browse Internet, send and receive email, write documents using OpenOffice, create graphic using Inkscape, create PDF brochures, copy artworks to thumb drive and give to printer to make copies, connect my digital camera and transfer photos to the computer, and use Gimp to touch up photos and burn to a CD and give it to a photo shop to print, I listen to digital radios, podcasts, I put a audio CD in and convert songs to mp3 and transfer to my mp3 player.
Isn't what students need to do using their computers whether they are poor or not? Isn't that what they should expose to whether they are poor or not?
Computer is not a calculator, that time passed very long time ago, now you can use it do lot of useful things and you can use it to learn lot of useful things.
If lot of students in a classroom do have many laptops, they can further do projects, isn't it? They can create their school website? They can create artworks for competitions, etc. May be they earn money for their school by creating posters, artworks, logos, websites for others specially for businesses, etc.
As a side benefit of the laptop project, once students leave the school, they come out with lot of skills in their hand. They can easily find a job or can start a small venture without being a trouble for their parents or for their governments.
When you give something, whether it is free or at a fee, you should give something useful. You may still give these students a laptop at $100, but it should really be useful, not just operational.

Internet is an amazing delivery mechanism
Many have undermined the potentiality of Internet as an amazing delivery mechanism. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) like BitTorrent brings this to an unprecedented level. Today it is possible to distribute very large files at a negligible cost. This was evident with new comers to Linux world such as multimedia Tomahawk Desktop and their world reach via BitTorrent. This is a model, try it before you buy and places a great trust on you.
A recent survey found P2P music download is in the geographical area where most people buy legal music. What this means? It is try it before buy mentality. P2P and Internet downloads are not an evil or bad for business, its a great opportunity not to be missed.

Come out from MP3 myth and hype
It is surprising to note digital music is only six percent of total music sales in 2005. So digital music is just starting and its a good time to come out of the hype see what professionals use.
Everybody now days use mp3. Is that the only music format available? No. There are other music formats available which are far more superior to mp3 but not widely known yet.
Ogg is similar to mp3, but its a completely open and free format. That is, if you want to create audio (eg. Music, podcasts, etc) create in Ogg. You are not breaking the law. The mp3 is a patented technology.
If you are an audiophile, its shame to play mp3 in your HiFi. Consider FLAC. The FLAC is the ultimate audio format, its loose less, high definition and again completely open and free format. There are FLAC players in the market like iAUDIO X5.
I have evaluated the Tomahawk Desktop, its Linux based multimedia OS, you can use it to convert your CDs to either Ogg or FLAC. Its amazing, its just drag and drop! To transfer to your Ogg or FLAC player, its again just drag and drop!
Another advantage of Linux is you can play without getting hit by viruses and worms.

BSD license is the greatest asset, merge all BSDs
The biggest mistake is forking of BSDs. The BSD initiative should not have financial difficulties. Its license is the greatest asset. GPL is not business friendly. Don't you guys see this? It is only the BSD initiative can get blessing from companies. Why don't you guys use the opportunity. As the first step, merge all BSDs into one project, may be to the FreeBSD. Sell the importance of BSD license to companies and attract their funding for the project.
I'll give one example, currently I'm evaluating a Linux OS named Tomahawk Desktop designed for multimedia, entertainment and office use. Its pathetic they don't have important drivers for printers, top end graphic cards such as ATI, 3D Labs, Intel Core-Duo WiFi, etc. Why? Its because of Linux is under GPL. It is illegal to develop and distribute closed source drivers for Linux. No manufacturer wants to release the source of their drivers. That is the nature of business. In business you need a competitive advantage. Its ONLY BSD can give that competitive advantage to business.
See Apple has drivers for all important printers, scanners, fax, graphic cards, wifi cards, etc. Why? It is completely legal to develop and distribute closed source binary drivers.
See who financially benefit from the BSD initiative. Those are the companies the BSD project should deal with, keep in touch and get funding. Do you think they will refuse to fund the project?
Just list the commercial users of the BSD in your website (eg. FreeBSD) for whole the world to see. It is not unethical to even list their contributions in the website.

3D rendering and multi-cores
I'm currently evaluating the feasibility of using Blender included in a Linux distribution named Tomahawk Desktop.
Using Blender has a significant cost advantage. Our bottleneck is the rendering time. We expect these chips may be available soon at a price SOHO can afford.

Re:Take that pop ups!
Tomahawk Desktop is highly recommended.

Patch! Patch on what?
There is NO such thing as patching binary. If you want to patch, in first place you need the source programs. Then download the patch, apply the patch to the source programs, recompile and reinstall. That is patching a program to rectify an issue.
Are the source programs of the IE browser available? If it is not available to you, is it available to those two companies to rectify the problem. Or have they done the Blind man grouping?
I don't think its even worth looking at. Just simply get a browser of your choice which has the source programs available to public. I personally recommend Firefox.
If you want the latest Firefox, its a double bonus switch to Linux also at the same time. Its not scaring. Things are far more advanced now. I'm currently evaluating an Apple like multimedia Linux named Tomahawk Desktop. I'm very happy with the progress so far. Just get it and forget about this crappy browser issues. Don't be permanently dumb. Don't be forever amateur in using computers.

Not only Apple
Windows is looks like a victim of its own pride. They have to develop all software necessary, they cannot utilize advantages of Open Source. Microsoft undermined the Open Source movement so much in public even with full page news paper advertisements.
See Apple, its core is FreeBSD, window system is Unix X window system, etc. Thereby, saving millions of lines of code and time.
I'm currently evaluating a multimedia Linux named Tomahawk Desktop. Its amazing to see how much Linux has now progressed. -
Want to see something blocked by your ISP?
It doesn't matter whether XXX or whatever, use Tomahawk Desktop to see the website you want. If you use Tomahawk Desktop, there is only one way your ISP can block your access, block the IP address only.
There are only two ways your ISP can block your access. 1) by the domain name 2) by IP address.
In first method is what ISPs normally use. That is, when you request DNS resolution for particular domain name, they don't give you the IP address for the domain name. So you cannot access it.
Second method is too expensive to implement by ISPs, ie, check all packets pass thru the ISP for known IP addresses of sites they want to block.
Tomahawk Desktop is probably the first desktop Operating System comes with its own DNS server. Therefore, Tomahawk Desktop, does not use your ISP's DNS server. It does its own DNS resolution. Its too expensive to block the Tomahawk Desktop :) -
Unless you run a secure OS
Even quad-core also may not be enough if your computer is busy on crunching spyware, adware, bots and sending spam to all over the world.
The more cores you have, it is pretty important to run a secure multimedia OS such as Tomahawk Desktop.
VoIP, High Definition audio and video, complex Office Suites, 3D demos, etc. may very soon demand more than dual-core. -
Why bring viruses to Apple?
It is a futile effort. Why not install an Apple like multimedia linux OS, such as Tomahawk desktop. There is a good article to learn more about it.

Open Source R&D tax credit not only for US
I'm enjoying one of the best fruits of Open Source, the Tomahawk Desktop. If you are curious what is Tomahawk Desktop, it an Apple like multimedia Linux OS for desktops and laptops.
Tomahawk and other are not feasible if not for Open Source. Therefore, Open Source R&D tax credit not only for US, US should as the big brother encourage other countries to follow it too. -
Next big thing: SIP-based mobile cellulars phones
I think the next big wave may be the proliferation of SIP-based mobile cellulars phones. That is, in addition to listening to GSM cellulars bands, listen to wireless Internet for VoIP calls at the same time.
I'm currently using the Tomahawk Desktop, for my VoIP communications. If you curious what is Tomahawk Desktop, it an Apple like multimedia Linux OS for desktops and laptops.
So, now have to add one more functionality to mobiles phones in addition to 2.0M pixels digital camera, MP3 player, radio, Bluetooth, etc. -
What did Ubuntu did to make it great?
Ubuntu is based on Debian. Why not Debian is not great? Everybody else is offering Firefox, OpenOffice, etc? How does Ubuntu different from others? Is that just the packages more recent?
What defenses Ubuntu deployed to stop virus, worm, Phishing/Pharming, remote hacking/hijacking attacks, etc. If you are looking forward to something new than package versions, its worth have a look at the Tomahawk Desktop, the multimedia Linux OS. -
Worth look at Tomahawk Desktop
How does Fedora Core 5 different from previous versions? Is that just the packages more recent? Everybody else is offering Firefox, OpenOffice, etc? How does it different from others?
If you are looking forward to something new than package versions, its worth have a look at the Tomahawk Desktop, the multimedia Linux OS. -
No Quicktime plugin for Linux!
I got an opportunity to try the latest Firefox (1.5.0.1) with the Tomahawk Desktop. For those who are wondering what is Tomahawk Desktop, it's an Apple like Multimedia Linux OS for desktops and laptops.
I have noted the Firefox is called Deer Park! Is there a name change again?
I further noted I cannot browse http://www.apple.com/aperture/ because there is no Quicktime plugin for Firefox on Linux. It seems Apple doesn't release a Quicktime plugin for Linux, like no iTunes for Linux. Can this issue be resolved at least with the Firefox 2.0? Is Quicktime a closed specification? Why doesn't Mozilla Foundation officially ask the specification from Apple rather than waiting forever? Is there a solution already under way to fix this issue? -
3D Design Tip
I'm not a scientist, but a geek interested in computer graphics and 3D modeling and just thought of share this tip with you guys hoping it may be useful.
When you design 3D graphics, you need a software tool to design your artwork in 3D and render it to get the final output. The Blender is one of the best open source 3D modeling and rendering tool. See the 'Art Gallery' section in the Blender home page to understand what you can do with it.
Another very useful 2D vector graphic design tool is Inkscape, this is similar to Adobe Illustrator, and again its open source.
The Gimp is similar to Adobe Photoshop and again this too open source.
Latest versions of these software are included into Tomahawk Desktop, this is a very useful multimedia Linux OS. -
Blu-Ray drivers for Linux
"Blu-Ray Coming Soon to PCs" does it mean can be used under Linux?
I'm currently evaluating a Multimedia Linux named Tomahawk Desktop. It seems writing DVDs under Linux is seamless and second to none.
According to this previous post, Sony PlayStaion3 comes with Linux and Blu-Ray drives. Does this means Blu-Ray drives already can be used under Linux? Or does Linux require drivers for Blu-Ray? -
All consumers are NOT criminals
Using BitTorrent or any other P2P (Peer-to-Peer) software do not make you a criminal. Manufacturing a knife or using a knife will not make you a criminal. Its how you use it. Are you using it for cooking or any other legal activity OR are you using to killing people.
BitTorrent uses a wonderful concept to deliver large content over the Internet (see how it works). Again it can be abused by distributing and downloading illegal contents such as pirated music or movies.
Recently I downloaded an evaluation version of multimedia centric Linux OS named Tomahawk Desktop using BitTorrent.
If not for BitTorrent, its impossible for the company to distribute it over the Internet or for me to download it. It's license allows the evaluation version of the Tomahawk Desktop to be given to others free of charge. While downloading via BitTorrent, you are giving part of it to others free of charge. So, how can I become a criminal by downloading legal content via BitTorrent? -

Re:Pros & Cons of Live CDs
It is very good to be security conscious. If you really want to benefit by the advances in Unix, try a secure OS like Tomahawk Desktop.
Initially I thought this was just a really lame astroturf for what is simply yet another minor desktop Linux distro, but then I looked at their site.
Turns out it does have some unique features. For instance not only does it come with a firewall enabled, it comes with a picture of a firewall too! Check this out - http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/images/inkscape-1 -204.png
Beat that OpenBSD! -
Pros & Cons of Live CDs
Advantage of Live CD is that you can try it without installing anything into a computer. The disadvantage is its very slow and very limited in functionality. Very frustrating for every day use. Nothing can beat the performance of an installed version.
It is very good to be security conscious. If you really want to benefit by the advances in Unix, try a secure OS like Tomahawk Desktop. -
Red Hat leaving the desktop arena?
Recently I switched my laptop to Tomahawk Desktop because of its impressive array of features for mobile computing.
It seems now Red Hat is not focusing much on desktop and laptops. I wonder whether the desktop and laptop arena not lucrative or is there really something else? -
Large telecom IT department!
This is a story one of my friends told me about alarming incompetency about their IT department.
They are a large cellular mobile operator and he is a senior manager. I'm using Linux for years at home. I have never experienced a viral, spyware, etc. activities in my home computer.
Last December, I introduced the Tomahawk Desktop to my friend and he was fascinated with its features (especially security features) and has emailed to their IT department about Tomahawk Desktop and asked them to evaluate the Tomahawk Desktop to see the feasibility switch at least their laptops to Linux.
Now more than three months gone still they are so much reluctant to write a report on that.
According to my friend they no F idea how viruses operate. They have not even heard the word Pharming before.
We were discussing how narrow minded they are, there is no other world for them other than Microsoft. They have no idea that there is another group of people do the same thing even better and securely at a far more lower cost using tools that they have never heard before. -
If you are security conscious use Tomahawk Desktop
If you guys are concerned about security, there is one OS worth looking at, it is Tomahawk Desktop.
Most dangerous things you can do to a computer is connect to Internet. Using an Unix-like OS doesn't necessarily means you are safe unless otherwise that OS is specifically designed and configured for that.
Viral and worm attacks are common. Can the Ubuntu save you from a Pharming attack? Can the Ubuntu save you from an avalanche of ssh or ftp attack to crack your password? -
Get Tomahawk if you do not want to wait
What does Ubuntu offer that Debian doesn't other than cosmetic? Tomahawk Desktop features Resistant to Viruses, Resistant to Pharming, and package user based simple yet very effective package management system. Its based on latest KDE.

Is a Linux an Unix?
I use Tomahawk Desktop. Is a Linux an Unix? If so, on what grounds people call Unix is dead?

Tomahawk may be a better choice
When it comes to multimedia, I think the Tomahawk Desktop (http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/) may be a better choice.
Wireless networking was right out of the box on my Centrino based Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I play high-definition video clips, DVD, digital radios (www.club977.com), mp3 and Ogg files.
