mirrorsThe software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information neccesary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

Mirrors Updatedcss-auth source and DeCSS mirrors Here is the most recent version of the css-auth CVS code as well as DeCSS. Please mirror & redistribute. This site has limited bandwidth, try to use a mirror first. Please mail additional mirrors and broken links to altair@rhythm.cx.
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Re:Right idea, wrong execution
I'm wondering if it's possible to design a contest which is not someone else's work, and relies on ingenuosity and technical skill.
I've come across the Programmer of the Month contest. Every couple of months, the guy that runs it proposes some interesting problem that can be solved with a program and takes submissions to see who can write the program that best solves the problem.
The current problem involves a word search where the letters for the words need only be adjacent (i.e. not necessarily in a straight line) and each letter may only be used once. Previous contests have included: given a square piece of wood and an arbitrary linear cut, make up to ten other straight cuts such that all final pieces of wood have the same area; in a lottery with N balls where three of the numbers on a seven-number ticket must match three of the seven numbers drawn, generate the fewest tickets necessary to guarantee a win; and on a square grid, using a salesman that moves like a chess knight, visit all of a list of locations in a minimum number of moves. The challenges are very interesting. Some are easy enough that I enter them. Some are quite chellenging, but they're still fun to try to solve, even if I don't feel I have a glimmer of a chance of winning.

Problems with PS2...As far as I'm concerned, as a gamer, I'm definitely going to get one. As a gamer, you HAVE to. It's like a requirement. (Real gamers always have the latest stations...) Anyway, there are some problems so far that I can see with Sony's strategy as far as PS2 is concerned. Listen, and listen well, grasshopper...
- No direct Internet/networked game support
Now, before I get flamed for this one, consider this. The Dreamcast has a built-in 56K modem, out of the box. And (since I have one, and know) it is easily pulled out and has an interesting port that it plugs into... proprietary, but it is claimed by Sega bigwigs that they'll be offering a DSL or cable (or both) modem upgrade in the future for Dreamcast owners, and it makes sense. Games for the DC are going to need slightly more bandwidth than the regular 56K they can get (and usually less) through a regular phone line. But they have it integrated. Sony's plans call for PS2 owners to have to go out and buy one later on, but theirs will be an Ethernet type card; not only will owners be forced to purchase the card, but also they will need to get an ISP that supports such a device. If Sony expects to succeed, they need to either A)Offer a competitive priced service for their Internet gaming over Sega's or B) Offer a regular modem for those of us who don't feel like going Ethernet just yet. - Only two ports on the console
This might not seem like much of a problem, but I think that Sega's got the right idea. Multiplayer is where things are going, because the computer (while being interesting) never really DOES provide the same challenge (or satisfaction) of beating a friend who you know, or playing in a tournament against other players who are really good too. Example: Armored Core. There is already heavy development on AC2 for the PS2 (and it's pretty much the sole reason I'm getting one) but the computer is going to be second-rate compared to a true AC champ. Besides, how cool would it be to play a four-way AC deathmatch? I drool at the prospect, but with only two ports on the front (a near-fatal decision, IMHO) it won't happen. And the system is DEFINITELY able to handle the workload, so the idea that it's too much of a strain is BS.
I'll be getting a PS2, but I don't know how well it's going to work out. My budget is limited to about $400 for the total system, and it is expected to be released soon (March, IIRC) in Japan for about $375. If I also have to buy a NIC for it, which will probably be a bit of a cost as well, and pay for a service (which I don't even know if I can get yet) I don't know how well this system is going to go... so far, Sega's done everything right. Let's hope that Sony doesn't make mistakes. Competition is good.
(PLUG: Check out my Armored Core web site! With pics I *borrowed* from From's website... go here.) - No direct Internet/networked game support

Re:SSN == Financal tracking (fraud, BAD CHECKS, etIf by check tracking database, you mean ChexSystems (see here), then they cannot have my SSN. My financial life has been ruined once by Chex, and it won't be again.
Also, there is absolutely nothing to prevent them from drafting a check against my account with my authorization and sending it to the payor, or drafting said check, depositing it and then doing an ACH transfer to the payor. OR, even ACHing the money out of my account and the into the payor's. My bank requires only the routing number and bank account number to do ACH transfers.
If financial interconnections required SSNs, why doesn't IEscrow require it? I routinely have my escrow checks deposited directly into my checking account, and all they needed was the routing/account number.

Re:Needs some fixing
Hey, I love star trek and I got a miniture Enterprise-D to prove it, but I think Iain M. Banks is far more creative than the star trek writers.
First off, the ship names are better. In star trek, all the ship names are like "Enterprise," "Excelsior," and "Defiant" while the culture has more interesting names such as GCU Prosthetic Conscience (my fav) and GSV No Fixed Abode. Also, the characters in the Culture are also smarter. I remember in Excession where a bot, about to be destroyed, fakes a suicide attack but instead uses it's laser to burn an encoded message onto the enemy ship's hull. Kirk/Picard/Sisko/Janeway would never have thought of something like that! The aliens are also much more interesting (probably because they are part of a book, not a tv show - no need for puppets/models/customes) but just to give you an idea, see what an Idiran looks like. Finally, the idea of a hedonistic society where you got perfect genes, a built in PDA, and the abilitity to change hex sounds a lot more exciting than exploring space and meeting strange aliens that all look alike.

Learn how to do your FUD better!Hey, dude, you need to read the FUD 101 HOWTO, you're doing a lousy job!
You did okay on your FUD Method #1 (exaggerating weaknesses) with the "mediocre device support". But you need to apply some FUD Distraction Methods for the FUD #2 (outright lies) where you state "no meaningful GUI", since Linux has at least two meaningful GUI's (GNOME and KDE). I suggest that next time you try more extensive "Sandwiching" (distraction method #1), preferably by using FUD Method #1 to attack various attributes of those GUI's. Same goes with the 'ages of cruft' and 'so-so performance', you really need to use some distraction methods to make your FUD stick. If you're stuck with how to do that, go to Microsoft's very own "Linux is a poor value proposition" page, which is a masterful blend of FUD#1 (exaggerating weaknesses), FUD#2 (outright fabrication), and FUD#3 ("spinning" a strength as a weakness).
Sheesh, how much is Wagged paying you anyhow? Whatever it is, it's too much, 'cause you're doing a LOUSY job of FUD! I know you can do better, after all, your firm did an excellent job on the "Linux is a poor value proposition" page...

Frauhofer sounds best, but use LAME/cdex anyway...Frauhofer's mp3 producer for Windows has the best sound quality. For the longest time I used it with Barth's cdcopy (for ripping).
BUT... I've fallen in love with cdex and use it now instead. cdex rips (with very nice skip checking/reporting), cddb's, and encodes in one shot. Best of all, it uses LAME (Lame Ain't an MP3 Encoder), which is the closest thing we've got to a Legal, Free (Free Beer and Free Speech) MP3 encoder.
The LAME page links to a couple of Linux apps that do about the same in the Linux world: Grip (Gtk) and Krabber (KDE), but I've been happy enough with cdex that I haven't tried these yet.

Changing directionsTo go in any direction, you put your ship in a path where the magnetic sail accelerates it toward a planet. Then use the planet's gravity to swing around in the direction you want to go.
I'm sure people with the proper tools, such as the Satellite Tool Kit orbit calculator or Orbital Mechanics CDROM, can make some interesting launches by using the Earth and Moon to redirect trajectories.

How I did it
Having just installed a cable modem I ran into all sorts of problems getting IPMASQ working. I ended up having to install RH6 several times because of all the problems and my own monkeying around.
Assuming that you have the basic machine working and it works as a gateway for WWW based applications, the next thing is getting the IP MASQ modules loaded.
All the how-tos and do it yourself pages have not seemed to keep up with the various versions of software as well as the move to IPChains, which is a real pain in the a**.
With RH6 I could not get it to work until I did the following (note: no kernel recompilation):
in /etc/rc.d/rc.local I added (note: eth0 is my local net, eth1 is connected to my cable modem):
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i eth1 -j MASQ
insmod ip_masq_ftp
insmod ip_masq_raudio
insmod ip_masq_irc
insmod ip_masq_icq
insmod ip_masq_quake
This took care of all the general use items. I have not had a single problem with FTP, IRC or ICQ yet).
The ip_masq_icq module is not in the standard distribution of RH6, so you need to grab it from the following page:
ip_masq_icq http://members.tripod.com/~djsf/masq-icq/
For games, there are going to be major problems trying to run more than a single client from behind the gateway machine. To get around this I simply signed up 2 accounts with Kali and grabbed the Linux version of their proxy (binary only) from here:
kProxy http://www.kali.net/js/software/kproxy. html
As a side benefit, it is a Socks5 proxy, so anything that supports it can be run through kproxy.
Do *not* try to autostart the kproxy from you module scripts. I created a user just to run kproxy and login and start the proxy manually.
This may or may not work for you system, but it took me a whole weekend to get it running so if it works, maybe you'll have saved a little time.
--
P.S. If anyone can tell me how I could autostart kproxy in another terminal automatically, let me know. My gateway machine does not even have X installed, so no KDE,Gnome solutions please.

Turtle Beach Montego & some SoundblastersThe Turtle Beach Montego has a digital S/PDIF connector on a dongle, whose output can be converted to optical fairly easily. Also some Soundblasters (AWE32/64 Gold) have a twisted-pair S/PDIF connector on the card its self.
My friend's Sony receiver (not sure the model number) has a "coax in" port that can talk S/PDIF, and Toslink (optical) outputs to connect to his minidisc. We are planning on connecting his AWE32 to his receiver via this input, email me if you want to know how it turns out. (remove the nospam and spamsux

Re:What about Zope?Zope is a cool system, because it's highly flexible, and you benefit from the variety of available extensions for Python; you can use things like PIL, LDAP modules, whatever, etc. (This is why it's often a good idea to use a general programming language for tasks instead of inventing a little language that gets clumsily extended.) If you're going to have multiple users maintain different chunks of a Web site, Zope's management screens provide much of the infrastructure that you need.
The downside at the moment is that, because Zope's fore-runner was an internal product used by Digital Creations, the DC people didn't have a lot of documentation for it. They've been working on getting more docs written, but the picture is still somewhat scattered. If you end up reading the source code, it would be difficult for a Python newbie because the code so full of cutting-edge technique. Luckily, you can do a lot without having to dive into the source code; it only matters for more complicated things like writing a new product or DTML tag for it.
While you're at it, check out Squishdot, which is still in really early alpha; it'll be astoundingly cool when it's finished.

Tripod home pages have the same clause in licenseFrom the tripod member agreement:
Member Web Pages: c) By submitting a Member Web Page to Tripod, you grant Tripod and its affiliates a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide, unrestricted license to use, copy, modify, transmit, distribute, and publicly perform or display the submitted Member Web Page, as well as portions thereof and content and material thereon.
It appears that this certainly isn't limited to Yahoo/Geocities. I think it does have implications for anyone putting original material, especially things like art or music, on "free" web spaces. Whether companies like Tripod or Yahoo would actually try to make use of that content is probably questionable, but the fact that it's in the license, which few people actually read, makes me uneasy. I also wonder if the clause can be applied to content put on a geocities or tripod site and later moved to another host. Do they retain any sort of "legacy" rights?-alan

What if you superimpose your own information using steganography software? That would overwrite anything that was already stored in the low bits.

The National School Safety Center has issued thisHi, something called The National School Safety Center has issued a list of characteristics that teachers and parents should watch for in students. While some of the stuff on the list, such as cruelty to animals is a valid reason for concern (it's disgusting behaviour even if it doesn't indicate violence against humans in the future!), some of the stuff on the list makes me concerned that whoever is in charge of this organization is out to get us non-conformists. Here are some examples of language I find troubling:
Has few or no close friends. Hmm, I had "few or no close friends" when I was young.
Has witnessed or been a victim of neglect or abuse in the home. Hmm, I had witnessed and been a victim of abuse in the home. What about from fellow students and teachers?
Consistently prefers TV shows, reading materials, movies or music expressing violent themes, rituals and abuse. Hmm, just about all major literature has violence in it. I like the rituals part... does that mean that if I enjoy reading Catholic religious books I'm suspiscious? It sounds like the influence of the "Dungeons and Dragons=Devil Worship" Brigade is still at work, how nice.
Reflects anger, frustration and the dark side of life in school writing projects. Remember, everything is nice and happy all the time! Teachers don't want to read about it if you are upset about some of the terrible things your government is doing with cluster bombs in other parts of the world! Don't write about such dark things, stay nice, bland and mellow. Don't say anything unless you know everyone else agrees!
Is involved with a gang or an antisocial group on the fringe of peer acceptance. Remember, peer acceptance is the most important thing in the universe. If you can't fit in because of some physical defect or clumsy social skills, well... perhaps the kindest thing would be to put you to sleep. After all, you are a threat now! Popular jocks never do terrible things...
Is often depressed and has significant mood swings.
Has threatened or attempted suicide.
Has tantrums and uncontrollable angry outbursts.
Remember, if you are a teenager, moodiness is not an option! Someday, we'll put computer chips in the brains of all teenagers to suppress such dark urges! For now, though, you'll have to do it yourself! Remember, suppress, suppress, suppress, let a smile be your umbrella.
Sigh..... oops seems this wonderful document is getting me depressed... better take some "happy pills" now! Oh, by the way, despite my "dark" personal profile, I managed to get through high school without hurting anyone at all... even with no girlfriend and no friends. In fact, I've never physically harmed anyone in the 30 years I've been alive. (I've always been kind to animals, too.) Now I'm a married professional, hmm... how can this be?

Is this guy twisted or what?
I dug a little deeper and found out it was a spoof!

He does warn you in advance though...

Re:Satan Trek
I could be wrong, but I'm betting it's NOT a spoof.
I've been exposed to several examples of extreme fundamentalist religious fanaticism that were every bit this ludicrous.
Check out the homepage of the group that takes credit for creating the site.
Sadly, it looks like a legit ultra-fundamentalist group.
The wording and syntax of their rhetoric is exactly like that of other such groups I have seen. I saw no blatant giveaways that it was a spoof, even in the "spork" page.
Actually, I HOPE I'm wrong about this... -
The art of URL editing
Whenever I see a URL pointing into the middle of a site, let's say:
http://members.tripod.com/~tzimisc e69/satantrek.html
I click the location box in my web browser and hit backspace until I end up with something like:
http://members.tripod.com/~tzimisce69
Which often helps to get things into context.
Sometimes I end up in a directory listing, which is a great way to explore a site. Unfortunately, some sites are rude enough to leave directories without index.html and block directory listing. Bad, bad webmaster. No cookie today. -
