Younger founders and employees are willing and able to work longer hours, and really grind it out. They have higher stamina, and generally don’t have families they want to spend time with. They can completely commit to the job at hand.

That may be specifically true, but probably not universally.

I'm 54 and can still crank out a productive 36 hour work day (yes, seriously) at crunch time, but that's me; I've always been able to stay up and be productive for long, long periods of time - showering and eating to get refreshed. But when it's over, I need 10 solid hours of sleep. It probably started when I was a college research assistant programming LISP and Prolog at 3am (as it was the only time I could get serious computing time on the VAX 785 (running 4.3 BSD) and/or our Xerox LISP system.

In addition, I had a wife, who was a teacher, who understood being professional and committed to a task and didn't complain about any long work hours, as she often put in some serious hours to teach her Gifted students. (She died in 2006, so now I'm single: Remember Sue...) We had no kids -- we met in 1985 when I was 22 and she was 41 -- so we were able to dedicate our down time to each other.

I imagine my stamina -- and 30+ years of experience, programming in many languages and administrating Windows, Linux and Unix on everything from PCs to Cray systems -- would still fair well against most youngsters now.

I thing the main thing is that older people have a greater sense of perspective, perhaps not shared with their younger managers, that there are actually more important things in life than whatever is going on at work or even work itself. Case in point, I'd give everything to have Sue back.

An arrest is technically different from kidnapping and arrest isn't even a privilege unique to law enforcement. You, a normal citizen, can legally hold someone under arrest the same as any police officer.

Speeding is specifically authorized for police engaged in their duty, so they're not breaking any laws by doing so. They are not, however, allowed to drive recklessly and will (theoretically) face consequences if they do so. If they do so, but nobody is harmed and they apprehend the fugitive, then they have an excuse defense for their action and can avoid prosecution. This isn't unique to them though; you could do the same thing.

Again with the law comic.

I always refer to this when people spout off about entrapment. It doesn't get any more clear than this.

One of my co-workers has a law degree. I showed her your link. According to her, the second example (Grayson) is pretty clearly entrapment. The guy was not predisposed to commit a crime until the police created the opportunity and enticed him into it.

I do not think you know what the legal definition of entrapment is. Actually, I know you don't based on your post.

If you can afford to, saving is great. If you can hold onto a full-time job (at about double federal minimum wage(!)), maintain health insurance, never get very sick, and never plan to marry or have a family, that kind of financial planning can help you have a comfortable retirement on a lower-middle class salary. In practice, poor people regularly have large expenses that wipe out their savings. And the never have a family part is deal-breaker for many people.

I actually wasn't going to reply to this, but then I came across this Tumblr post which states this much better than I could. Please read it if you think the parent is making sense.

You do realize that J. K. Rowling re-tweeted an article about how PDP and others "just joking around" about racism, is enabling racists to normalize their views, right?

I grow weary of trotting out The Producers as a counterexample, but it's the most crystal clear one I've found. The parallels between it and the supposedly most offensive video ("Kill All Jews") are very strong. Both contained an over the top candy-coated celebration of a horrible idea, and then showed a reaction shot of someone(s) looking on in horror. The difference is, people think they have made some terribly clever point when they claim PewDiePie's horror was just acting. Well, let's say that's true... guess what the actors in The Producers who were playing the audience watching "Springtime for Hitler" were doing?

Go on and claim in public that The Producers normalizes Nazism; I dare you.

And yet, it's actual people in the alt-right community who think that PDP might be one of them

The same exact "alt-right community"[2] that previously was praising PDP now claims that they are the number one fans of the Wall Street Journal. Maybe, just *maybe* they're trolling you? Maybe they never actually thought that PewDiePie was one of them? If you want to argue otherwise, you need to explain why they are not equally serious now when they claim the WSJ as one of their own.

From what I've seen so far, I've no problem assuming PDP is telling the truth when he explains whom he doesn't support, instead of believing a pathetic group of people people whose entire sad lives revolve around pretending they're more important, hip, popular and respected than they are.

PDP might as well yell "I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling [reporters]"

Again, you keep pretending that PDP has lost. He has not, and it will not be long before the WSJ is wishing that they could've gotten away with it. In a way, this whole response has been a waste of my time because I could simply wait a year or two and you'd realize it all on your own.

Okay. How'd you do it and what do you do with your time? What are the things to look out for? I would seriously like to know. I'm 53, debt-free and financially independent. Not "fuck you" money, mind you, but enough to last me ~60 years on my current budget (plus discretionary allowances) -- not counting any future SSI or capital gains. I'm still working 3/4 to full time (by choice) but am thinking about a change.

As I posted above, I'm in this position because I was very happily married to a wonderful woman, who was 19 years older than me, for 20 years and we lived responsibly accounting for the fact that she would retire before me. Instead, she died, literally in my arms, of a brain tumor in Jan 2006, just seven weeks after diagnosis. I'm still a bit lost and without direction because she was all that really mattered... My experience, at first was cool, it was something new. Quickly wore off, now I'm at the point where I only interact with family and 1 friend IRL and I find myself feeling deeply depressed. I have no goals, no motives, and that's just no life to live. I wake up feeling sad, like another day of nothing. I love going to sleep because I get a break from my boring life. I truly believe this experiment has left me with clinical depression. When I worked I was never this sad. Never was my sleep schedule so off when I worked.

I'm in a similar position, though not of my choosing, and completely understand what you mean. Make no mistake, this was an aqui-hire. Fitbit hired the people by buying the company. They weren't interested in the software or the hardware; although the elimination of a sort-of competitor isn't a bad thing for them. It's yet another example of Our Incredible Journey.
