Re:I don't envy the developers
They will be judged against people's rose tinted rememberances of the original Wolfenstein 3D. And no matter how good it is, people will say 'Ahhh I enjoyed the original more.'
Are you sure? From the trailer and the multiplayer preview it looks awesome - check the realistic explosion on the building, the physics of the soldiers flying in with parachutes, and, or course, the flamethrower, which I think I'll probably remeber as much as the first time I heard `meinleiven' (or whatever) come out of the shiny new SoundBlaster 2.0
It will also be one of the first single player focused 3D shooters to be released on the Linux platform for ages (depending on whether or not Heavy Metal FAKK 2 makes its way to the shelves quicker or not). Rune and Heretic were third person, and Q3 and UT were multiplayer focused. This has me salivating for a good single player FPS - they're a lot more atmospheric than multi or third person games.
And of course, the obligatory reminder that you all should buy it from Tux Games (for all you Yanks), Everything Linux or wherever else will ship with the Linux binaries to show your support for your OS of choice ... -
Re:win/linux?
Not out of the box (unless you bought it at ). TTimo @ ID Sofware is making linux binaries that will allow you to play in linux. Binaries for the Test are already out and working beautifully. Get the Test2 binary HERE

Games for Linux
Like Fakk2
Kohan
Mindrover
And just about everything here.
There really are plenty of non-FPS games available, like Kohan, and Mindrover.
Mindrover isn't really as silly as it sound either.
For the budding mercenery my recommendation is Jagged Alliance 2

Purchase from...
For anyone wanting to buy, Tux Games. Its out of stock but new stock expected tomorrow.

Lots of good comments, but no gaming historyTo those who think that morale simulation, and non-unit specific control is best, take a look at MS's Close Combat. You order different squads around, who almost never do what you want them to do unless it's specifically in their best interest. Quite entertaining, and very, very difficult.
To those who think that resource gathering sucks, take a look at "Z" or "Steel Soldiers". Most of the maps that I remember are symmetrical, and you battled for individual control of territories, each territory giving you X points of resources per turn. Theoretically, each started with exactly the same resources, terrain, and position, so individual tactics are key.
Speaking of individual tactics, Jagged Alliance (also available for linux) is unbelievable. Probably one of my favorite games of all time, it combines minor role-playing, economics, big freakin' guns, and turn-based strategy. My biggest annoyance with real-time strategy games is that they were too much "real-time", and not enough "strategy". JA2 neatly solves the first problem by making combat turn-based, and everything else is as fast/slow as you want it.
There are tons and tons of cool games from even just a few years ago- while their graphics aren't 3D rendered, the gameplay is definitely timeless.

Transgaming Says: SDL == WINEX
These people are so bloody backwards as to think that near perfect direct x api emulation will gain us native applications. Why this is, I do not know. After having spoken with their coders at LWCE, I doubt they understand what a native binary is, let alone how they can compare api emulation to native binaries. The worst part is when they tell me that SDL is so similar, when it's not. SDL isn't emulating any behaviour, it is an API. It may be similar in some respects to DirectX, but it is not letting you use non-native binaries in Linux. People who want to support microsoft emulation have tried before, succeded in emulation, and then promptly failed as nobody wrote native applications for their operating system (OS/2 anybody?). If you want Linux gaming through companies like Loki (who produce native games) to fail, buy whatever these jokers are going to sell you.
If you want Linux to succede as a desktop so we can be finally free of the shackles we support when we buy into propietary API's like DirectX, and become the gaming platform of choice, buy native games from online stores like tuxgames. Do not spend one dime on what isn't native and you won't be funding the market speak of sales figures against a Linux desktop. -

Another site to buy Kohan
Kohan is also available at Tux Games and its a little cheaper as well. Disclaimer: I don't work for them or have any affiliation with them. I just have their site bookmarked.
-
Re:Unite! Go buy a game!Huh? I went to the site to see when it was going to be released and it just said "soon".
From Loki's front page...
8.1.01 We're excited to announce that Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns, the first commercially-available real-time fantasy strategy game for Linux will ship August 15! Also, Halls of Valhalla, the official standalone multiplayer expansion pack for Rune will also ship August 15.
Will that date slip?  I've no idea nor am I worried.  This is the first time ordering direct from Loki as all my other game purchases (Civ:CTP, Q3, SOF, D3, SMAC, MindRover, Myth II, HG2, Tribes 2 and Terminus) have either been through Tux Games or my local Frys.  I just got confirmation about Rune and "Programming Linux Games" shipping and expect to hear back on my Kohan order as well in the next day or two.  Not that I have any time to play the games before December, but so life goes.

Game project donations...hosted by TuxGames.comIf you want to support game-related projects -- including graphics engines -- drop by TuxGames.com and make a donation.
Donations to the cross-platform Simple Direct Media Layer project are also being accepted at the libSDL.org site. (SDL, BTW, recieved a $1,000 grant from the Linux Fund, so you might want to look there too.)
Keep in mind that while most of these projects are developed for Linux, ports to Windows and sometimes Mac OS are usually included. So, even if you don't run Linux -- or any *nix -- you can still benifit.
Projects that you can support include...
New Breed Software creates software for both the Agenda handheld (Atari 800 emulator, Agendaroids, Aliens,
...) and X (Circus Linux, X-Bomber, ...).www.linux-games.com (note the "-") also has a couple Agenda programs as well as Penguin Command, Castle-combat, Timewarp...
glTron? Nuf' said.
Chromium BSU is another action-diversion.
FreeCiv, PipeNightDreams...well, go see the entire list yourself.

My Problem with Linux Games...
I started off with pre-ordering Q3 for Linux; I still use it, especially in Win98. Why? The cash, as I saw it, went to Loki; the performance is only decent on Linux. My 64M DDR Radeon, for example, pushes around 50 frames at 800x600x32. In windows, I get around 75 frames at 1024x768x32. Add the drop in framerates during all the action on CTF4, for example, and Win98 seems to take the lead. And, yes, this is used with the "timedemo 1; demo demo127" commands and not "cg_showfps 1" stare at the walls ****.
Secondly, pricing. With the exception of the $10 games at EB World, the Linux games can be more expensive than the Windows counterparts; I still refused to take EB up on their $10 offer. The more I spent, and I hope I am right
;), the more money would go to Loki. I could be wrong, who knows. Anyway, let's look at a sample of the games I personally purchased:These prices are from Tux Games and the local EB and Gamestop.
- Unreal Tournament
- Linux: Now $20
- Win98: Now $20
- Cool.
:)
- Shogo: MAD
- Linux: Now $26
- Win98: Now $10 at Best Buy and Fred Meyer
- Descent 3
- Linux: $23, $10 at EB World
- Win98: $10
- Rune
- Linux: Now $29
- Win98: $30
- Jagged Alliance 2 by Tribsoft
- Linux: Now $26
- Win98: $10
- Alpha Centauri
- Linux: $28
- Win98: $10
- Civilization: Call to Power
- Linux: $27
- Win98: $20
- Heavy Gear 2
- Linux: $25
- Win98: $10
- Heroes of Might and Magic III
- Linux: $27, $10 at EB World
- Win98: $15
- Myth 2: Soulblighter
- Linux: $25, $10 at EB World
- Win98: $10
- Rune: Halls of Valhalla
- Linux: $28
- Win98: $20
- Soldier of Fortune
- Linux: $46, $10 at EB World
- Win98: $20
- Tribes 2
- Linux: $48
- Win98: $30
Hrm. Ack! Yes, I have purchased all of these games, with the exception of Shogo: MAD, Unreal Tournament and the Rune series, as Linux ports. In short, Linux games can be, almost, twice the cost of their Win98 counterparts. For the economically challenged ( or conscious ), why spend the extra cash on a Linux port when you could get an additional game?

How to helpOK, there are several ways people can help here. The first and foremost is to speak with your wallets. Go to Loki or to Tux Games and buy things.
Other ways you can help are to link from your webpages to Loki or to Tux Games. This will help spread the word, because a surprisingly large number of people DO NOT KNOW about Linux gaming. (Linking via the Tux Games affiliate program can also make you some money).
Whichever you do, do something. Loki has provided us with great games over the last few years, and now its time for us all to pay them back.

Pre-Order available now
You can pre-order this title through Tux Games.
The price is $46, and we hope to ship at the same time as Loki ships. -
...plus keyboard and mouseFor $150, you could get...
Alternatively, for less $, you could get a boat load of current and classic titles for Linux at $10 a pop from EBgames.com
... or, better yet, hop over to TuxGames and pick up some new titles like Tribes 2,and Alpha Centuri, Mindrover, and Jagged Alliance 2 and still have some money left over.
No doubt, the hack prospects of the Dreamcast do make it tempting addition to an entertainment system. In 6 months, this should be sweet...yet, will it be selling in 6 months? (Really Curious!)

Give me Native or give me Death!
Serious, Ill pay (and do pay) good money for native games. As other people have pointed out, native == faster and fps (and the like) need to be fast.
I love being able to play (re: kick their asses) Tribes 2 with my windows "friends". Hope loki can keep going.
-jason m
BTW: Shamless plug for tux games. They where good about getting me Tribes 2 and SMAC and keeping me updated though the delays. -

Not very impressed AT ALLAs CEO of a company that has just shelled out MANY thousands of dollars on copies of Tribes 2 and Alpha Centauri, I was less than impressed to see Loki was selling to every LUG at a price LOWER than they are selling to their resellers. I can tell yuo for a FACT that Tux Games dos NOT get discounts like this, and we have been ordering Tribes 2 and Alpha by the hundred, not by the ten.
Loki has of yet not responded to my demand for an explaination, but I think this is NOT the way to win loyalty in resellers. If they charge LUGs less money than they charge resellers, the resellers may as well just pack up shop and go home.Suffice to say, we arent best pleased at this news. All well and good to give discounts to LUGs, but please, lower than the resellers?? Thats a great way to kill your reseller channel stone dead! </rant-mode>
-
Time to pay your duesThis means you can get Tribes2 for less than the Windows version. For once, Linux users have a leg up on the Win32 guys.
Note that I'm not taking into account the limited time special prices you can get from local stores from week to week. The price for Tribes 2 on ebgames.com is currently $45. The price for Tribes2 Linux is $50, so you can get it for $25 or less with this LUG deal.
Ok, Linux supporters...time to put up or shut up. If you truly want to help, lay out the money now.
FWIW, I put down over $100 in games from TuxGames to get my Tribes2, SMAC, and other Linux games earlier this week. Reviews forthcoming here.

They brought it on themselvesThey disobeyed the rule of open source software. Release soon and release often. That wasnt the ONLY rule they broke, by a long shot, but it was one of the fundamental.
They had no idea of the community, and they ended up annoying all of Loki, Tux Games, Tribsoft, and several others that I am barred from even mentioning. When you do that, you are pretty much dead in the water as far as the open source community goes.
What may be the only good thing tocome of this, would be if they GPL'ed the complete details of everything they have done the day before they go down, maybe give something back to the community that so far they have only ignored.

Loki and SDL
Please remember that SDL development was done mostly by the lead programmer for Loki.
If you all want more work to be done on it, go buy Loki games (from Loki themselves or one of their resellers like everythinglinux or Tux Games. Without Loki, there will be much slower development of SDL -
This could be bad for Linux gaming
I can say right now that Tux Games stands against Emulators. While emulators could be good in the short term, and they would certainly give Tux Games a much wider variety of games to sell, and thus more profit, they will kill native Linux apps. Take Loki for example. They produce top quality games for Linux. But these games cost money to port, and they generally are sold for somewhat more than the windows versions (as they are released a little later). What chance would these games have if the windows versions could be bought for 30% less but only ran 10% slower. Loki and tribsoft and Hyperion would all go broke in a month!
Sure, it may be the quick fix, but in the long term it will hurt Linux more than it will help. And dont forget, Emulation only works till the next version comes out. Do we really want to sacrifice platform independance to the whims of microsoft not changing directX? I know I dont. -
Re:This is bad news, I'm afraidI completely agree.
Rather than emulation efforts, I'd rather see people spending their time writing e-mails, filling out surveys (like this one for NBA Live!, for example), and filling out petitions (like this one) telling publishers that you want Linux games. "Putting your money where your mouth is", so to speak, is also a good way to urge publishers along: go buy some Loki products, for example.
Trust me, such things do get attention.

And it may even be for Linux
And to cap it all off, the new Sims multiplayer server is Linux based, from what we have been told. And it has a graphical front end so the administrators can zoom to games to debug. This is obviously only a very small step away from being Linux-ready for the desktop. So, to to Tux Games and sign the petition for The Sims for Linux!

I guess you signed the petition first and copied the link only afterwards?

The correct direct link would be http://www.tuxgames.com/petitions/viewpetition.cgi . Otherwise you'll sign the petition as Brian Kimmel, of Wichita, KS 67203, United States.
Or, as suggested, go to http://www.tuxgames.com/ and click on from there (there's a lot more of petitions going!). -

Best Selling and some Linux StatsWell, speaking for ourselves, Tux Games found that the best-selling available game for the month to date for Linux is Descent 3 and its Mission Pack. Jagged Alliance II was the best-selling pre-release game (which unfortunately wont quite make it for the christmas delivery deadline).
We wont reveal exact stats on order levels, but we can say that the majority of purchasers were male, but that the US for the first month since we started trading, comprised less than 50% of our orders. North America was responsible for 52% of our sales, Europe 40%, while the rest lagged well behind with Asia at 3%, Australia 2%, South America 2% and Africa 1% (rounded figures).
The rush is starting to die down now, with people realising that games will now be unlikely to arrive befrore the 25th.
