It's really, stupidly, simple...
Bruno Borges said it the most succinctly...

And Brian McCallister explained the full ramifications most clearly...

Info
Here's some info.
If you want to participate, you want to download hivemind LOIC or javaloic if you're not on windows.
rs.4chan.org will have links to both.
You can also use the regular LOIC in manual mode and select your own targets.
The best way to find out what's going on is via twitter. Various twitter accounts for operation payback have popped up since the first was killed off. Which is real? Probably all of them.
Here's a current one that's real - https://twitter.com/#!/Op_PaybackThe channel to join if youw ant to use hivemind mode is #loic . The server to connect to is loic.anonops.net (down now) or irc.anonops-irc.com .
loic.anonops.net was taken down and the domain name revoked. irc.anonops-irc.com seems to still be up. Any further take downs will invariably be rectified within hours (or minutes) - just watch twitter. And if you can't find anything on twitter, head to
/b/ (random) on 4chan.org and just F5, ctrl+f, anon. Reddit and digg and twitter and etc. will have the new details shortly after they hit 4chan, which is typically the first static public place they get posted to. -
Dragon has landed!
Update: The Dragon has successfully made a soft landing in the Pacific! This makes it the first-ever commercial spacecraft to return from orbit, and the first American capsule splash-down since 1975. A recovery vessel has already arrived at the capsule and is currently attaching floatation devices to it. NASA and SpaceX are doing a press conference as early as 3:30pm EST, which will presumably be broadcast both on NASA TV and SpaceX's website.
SpaceX has also released a video pointing out a window of the Dragon capsule while in orbit. They apparently also have video of the descent and presumably more video from inside the capsule which will soon be available.

CNN has video up
The official SpaceX video (which includes things like a view from the rocket itself) hasn't been released yet, but CNN has posted NASA's video here:
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/US/12/08/space.flight/
Ongoing updates will be posted to SpaceX's twitter account. The Dragon capsule is expected to orbit the Earth a few times and then land off the California coast about three hours after the launch, and SpaceX has announced that they're doing a press conference an hour or two after the landing.

Have you tried visiting WikiLeaks recently? The main

Re:Friday Was the Hot Day
This tempest sounds like a few people, with enough connections to news people, are convinced that the rest of the world *must* be as interested in this topic as they are. With that as their premise, they conclude Twitter is 'cheating.'
Wishful thinking that people would be more interested in international corruption than, say, the european music awards.

Re:Questionable
When I use NoScript to disable JS for a website, at least I have control over it.
Yeah, sure you do... Funny thing about NoScript, it allows you to run JS on sites you trust.
This is just more security theater; Consider cross site scripting attacks. I've seen XSS attacks on Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Amazon, and many more "reputable" sites that you may "trust".
NoScript security comes from not running JS. If you run any JS, you are then no longer secure. How do you know the JS you just allowed to run on a "trusted" site doesn't contain malware delivered via XSS? You Don't.
Granted, NoScript does increase your security because you're running less JS code, but it does not make you invulnerable to JS exploits unless you never allow JS to run.
The "control" you think you have can be ripped away from you by one XSS attack; So, what control do you actually have?

History Insurance
I recommend that all of you, your children, your grandmothers and your mothers download the "history insurance" file that was tweeted 3 days ago.
I sense that they will soon give up trying to go about this in a diplomatic fashion and just leak the key for the AES256 encryption. Then BOOM! Thousands of people will have the entire cable archive (or at least a large part of it) on their home computers.

Re:No need for DNS anymore
As I stated on my recent tweet: "Do we really need DNS afterwards? Give me an IP and I'll give them a shortened URL through Social Nets" - http://twitter.com/#!/brunoborges/statuses/10682824059256832 I don't think DNS is needed anymore, at least for websites. With the advent of URL shorteners, we all can publish websites online, without DNS, and through Social Networks show it to the world, easily through some link like http://bit.ly/myFooWebsite. DNS is, IMO, the last hope for Internet control. I have no idea how E-Mail or other protocols could deal with an Internet without DNS, but surely there's a way. Maybe, not invented yet.

Re:Bunch of dicks
The relevant bit starts at 43:55. Basically, they think that a Linux version would mean it would have to be open source, which obviously it doesn't. To quote one of the developers: "Linux can fuck off as far as I'm concerned." Gee, thanks. I don't mind if you're not going to bother making a port to Linux, but to not even bother to understand what people are asking and instead resorting to profanity shows these guys are a bunch of closed-minded dicks.
My first post! Please be gentle.
It looks like that podcast took place almost a year ago... as of "about 12 hours ago" on twitter it was twoth that a linux version is in the cards for us: http://twitter.com/SuperMeatBoy/status/10377369512583168 I'd imagine the world of linux was either made more clear to them, or they were simply being inflammatory previously as a joke. Their reaction to the PETA thing would indicate the latter, I'd say. Hopefully you're not completely soured on the game, it really is something else (the only reason I restart into Windows). It'll probably be a while before the port happens, as there's only one programmer between the two of them, but probably early next year we'll have some fresh native meat to play with... what?

anonymity does not always trump
It is widely known that the powers that be really, really want to destroy Wikileaks, and primary way to do that would be to release misinformation and tarnish Wikileaks and Assange's name. If all of the leaks were done completely anonymously, it would be trivial for the CIA (or anyone, for that matter) to flood the internet with fake leaks so much so that you have no idea what the real leaks are and what the fake leaks are. With Wikileaks as the central leak dispersion authority, any attempt at releasing fake leaks could just be called on on their twitter page, for instance.
That said, Julian Assange's name doesn't need to be known for Wikileaks to have been successful. Ideally, Wikileaks would be the trusted organization, and Assange would just be the leader of it. Instead, Assange is the organization (or seems to be), and the destruction of either would likely cause the destruction of both.

I wonder what impact that has on services like their EC2 cloud. I mean if your company does something the US government doesn't like and they can put pressure on Amazon to just cut off your services then all the supposed benefits of 'cloud computing' are bullshit.

Insurance file? That "th3j35t3" guy appears to be a major idiot, admitting to various DDoS attacks and being very public about his actions and convictions.
He's even gone so far as to develop his own pretty DoS tool with green fonts on black background with twitter integration that exploits uber-secret knowledge, like opening many connections that slowly feed http headers to apache, thereby using up all available children.
What will be interesting, though, is his own encrypted insurance file, that supposedly contains various information about the people behind wikileaks, although - like the wikileaks insurance file - you can't really prove it contains anything but random garbage. I rather choose to believe that the guy is a bored, stupid teen who read too many articles about the fantasy anarcho-hacking world of the 90s...

You're Probably Right But ...
Actually, the Kennedy's in general and JFK in particular DESERVE to be ripped apart--but not for the vapid reasons that Sarah Palin's ghost writer came up with.
Look, I'm not here to turn this into some JFK and RFK and Ted Kennedy did all this horrible crap and killed a woman and got away with it and were womanizing nepotistic rich bastards
... all or or some of these things could be said. But what I was trying to say here was that nobody has ever run on that platform. You can write a book of dirt when you're done with politics but writing such a book before you become president is sort of like asking your future opponent if they'd like to have their way with you right now. I mean JFK, though flawed, was a hero to a lot of Americans. And his martyrdom was just icing on the cake. And to call into question one of his most loved and cherished speeches is more than ballsy, it's downright dangerous.
Sarah Palin is a new kind of political monster, unlike the ones I'm used to watching comfortably from my armchair. She's got a twitter feed that sports so many errors, she might actually be the person running it! From a classic Bush-esque prescriptive versus descriptive linguistics error to making accusations and weird religious remarks. It's a microblogging service! Look at what the rest of the politicians use it for: a paid staff techie is told what to put on it and what goes on it is only tepid words praising safe topics for that candidate to like. And those are usually reviewed seventy times before they go up. She has broken the rules of and committed fouls in politics many times and yet people embrace her.
All I wanted to say in my post was that from what I've seen of Sarah Palin, we should have stuck a fork in her long ago yet she remains. And why is that? Well, she's a dangerously well liked and amicable to a large part of the population that you are not familiar with. If she makes a mistake they seem to forgive her and say "I've made that mistake too." If she uses cracked logic or argument tactics long ago written off by academics, her followers just write off the academics. Trust me, as someone who's tried to reason with a supporter with some fairly simple debate analysis of Glenn Beck's logic, I can tell you that you don't want to approach this as some fancy pants intellectual telling them how dumb they are.
Don't confuse this with praise of Sarah Palin or defense of JFK. This is just me trying to warn people about how I see the situation at present. What happens when she runs for president and her opposition preys on some stupid social gaffe of hers? If it's any less than what she's already done, it's merely going to be ignored by or reinforce her supporter's commitment. -

Plz stop saying I'm the guy behind the new DNS-system. I'm just one of lots of people with interest in it. Everyone does their part!

Maybe not so distributed.
This may have been a Slowloris DoS attack by some patriotic 2600 guy, not necessarily a massive coordinated multinational assault. That perl script is effective on threading web servers including Apache. I just tested it out, took down my badass 100mbps server (just the web server stalling up until the script is aborted) with a dinky server on a DSL line just by opening up a bunch of TCP sockets really really slowly, using less than 20KB/s. That's Tor friendly.
Then I installed mod_qos, tried to attack myself again, no slowdown, problem solved.
If this attack gets the right amount of attention it could turn a lot of people on (4channers mainly who are yapping up Slowlaris as their replacement for LOIC) to DoSing with this software. So for those of you using Apache, you may want to fire up mod_qos (Apache2 instructions). Actually you may want it regardless for general performance purposes.

Re:headline?
There's a guy on twitter claiming to be behind it (as referenced by another poster in the last thread)

Re:What does Wikileaks get from this?
Wikileaks used to feature leaks from all over the world, big and small. Truth and transparency for their own sake motivated the organization. In this capacity, Wikileaks might have been a force for good.
But a few years ago, Julian Assange (who is as autocratic as the rumors indicate) and his ilk abandoned the original goals of the organization to wage a political war against the United States. Wikileaks launched a massive fundraising effort, then started to ignore documents from the general public. Most telling is that the operators let the submission system stay broken for months at a time: if your leak doesn't harm the United States, Wikileaks isn't interested.
Today's Wikileaks uses methods that the old Wikileaks would have found deplorable: these include a strict internal hierarchy, deceptive video editing, spin-heavy public statements, marketing-driven timing, purity tests, and blackmail. Whereas idealism drove the old Wikileaks, every action taken by its present incarnation is informed by malice aforethought. It's no longer about the truth. Now, it's a vendetta.
Speaking as someone who was formerly involved with the organization, I cannot support today's Wikileaks or its leadership. They've been captured by their vanity and pride[1] and as far as I'm concerned, they can hang, then burn.
Posting anonymously for obvious reasons.
[1] That some prominent members of the organization consider this wretched document the "obvious truth" illuminates their mindset.

Re:Need a name change... seriously.
Piracy is illegal. Period. Whether or not they actually condone such actions is wholly superfluous to the fact that by having that term in their name, they implicitly (and strongly) associate themselves with the advocation of illegal activities. Again, whether they mean to do this is quite irrelevant. They must change their name before they have even the slightest *hope* of being taken seriously in Canada. Otherwise it's just the rhino party all over again, as far as most people will be concerned.
If they want to get any real votes, let alone seats in parliament, then they need to change their name to something respectable. If they aren't willing to, it just ends up looking like they just want attention.
We as a society define what is and is not respectable. If a word for pillaging ships on the high seas can mean "sharing information online via computers", then it can mean "getting actively engaged in your country's democratic process" too, a process we are beginning right now. Very few people on doorsteps are stuck on the name--out of a hundred people around 60 don't blink, 30 need an explanation to appreciate it, and 10 are exactly where you are.

Re:How does HTTPS Everywhere do it?
It's pretty simple, you can often force https simply by typing it in the address bar, if the site has some kind https cert set up, it'll bring you to a secured version of the site. https://twitter.com/ works and brings to twitter securely, as it does for many mail sites. All you have to do is add a character the html string, which isn't that complicated. For it to really be secure, the server administrator has to secure their site.
