Re:hard drives die at high altitudeYou will want to use a solid state disk when you are at Everest base camp.
If you read about computers used there, the hard drives fail very quickly due to low air pressure.
Hard drives are not rated to work at 18,000 feet. Very True. Dan Reed describes his experience with high altitude and hard drives here: http://hpcdanreed.typepad.com/reeds_ruminations/2007/08/yo-head-crashes.html#more "In an earlier blog posting, I mentioned that I was on my way to western China, to give a keynote talk at GCC2007 in Urumchi, which is in northwest China.....Needing a digital fix and wondering about network connectivity in Tibet, I turned on my IBM ThinkPad. Windows Vista booted normally, and my applications began loading. Life was good. Then, I saw the dreaded blue screen of death, followed by a message that struck terror in my heart: Disk read error Ctrl-Alt-Del to retry....... ...........The first night in Tibet, I awoke around 3 AM with a massive headache, one of those "Oh, please, bludgeon me into unconsciousness so the pain goes away" migraines from altitude sickness. I was having a second head crash, the biological kind this time., ......... ....I've been reflecting on the irony that my disk crash and altitude sickness were due to the same physics that dominates much of my professional life: the Navier-Stokes equations. Beguilingly simple to derive, yet fiendishly complex to evaluate, these differential equations are an application of Newton's second law to describe fluid flows in a wide range of physical situations:.... -
Censorship works both ways.
As far as the recent cable cuts go, what I am about to say is a conspiracy fantasy: I don't believe the U.S. is about to attack Iran. But if it were to do so, cutting off Internet might make good sense.
A couple of years ago, I attended a talk given by Iranian blogger Hossein Derakshan. He suggested that war with Iran would be much more politically difficult than the war with Iraq, because Iranian bloggers would tell the world about the suffering on the ground. And blogging is extremely popular in Iran. So, if the U.S. were to attack Iran, the aim might not be to censor what Iranians see of the rest of the world, but what the rest of the world sees happening in Iran.
There's some interesting discussion on Bruce Schneier's blog. I'm hoping Global Guerrillas will return to the topic also.

Re:auto-complete is at fault? As between lawyers, if the errant email had reached the opposing lawyer there are a number of attorney ethics rules, as well as court decisions, that basically say that the other lawyer must return any mis-transmitted documents and must not use the information. (Yeah surrre.) See Perlman, Untangling Ethics Theory From Attorney Conduct Rules: The Case of Inadvertent Disclosures , 13 Geo. Mason L. Rev. 767 (2005).
These types of court decisions would not, however, support a "prior restraint" such as a court order prohibiting the NYT from publishing the information, see, e.g., New York Times Co. v. United States , 403 U.S. 713 (1971) (5-to-3 ruling prohibiting prior restraint and allowing NYT to print the top-secret "Pentagon Papers").

Re:Ron Paul?
He wasn't far behind McCain in Maine. I think McCain had 21% and Paul had 19%
Yep, and try to find the results where more than 68% of the vote was counted. More importantly, Paul has gotten more delegates from Maine from John McCain which basically means he came in second. -
Re:Your best bet...
This is just as much about adults as it is about kids. Most humans have urges to have sex they can't hold indefinitely. Abstinence will prevent HIV, STDs and unwanted pregnancies in theory, but it is impossible actually to put into practice. Do you actually know anyone who will abstain from sex their whole life ? And if you are talking about abstinence before marriage, as is apparently taught in some places, that excludes a whole category of people who can't get married - gays, and who are most at risk for HIV. Also, some straight girls who pledged to remain "virgins" before marriage have substituted intercourse with other even higher-risk behavior like anal sex because they just don't know any better.
What we need a comprehensive sex education program that focuses on safe sex, contraception, and preventing STDs/HIV. I don't think abstinence should deserve more than a footnote in such a program because we already know teaching it alone doesn't work.
Note that 16 states have already rejected funds for abstinence-only education, the most recent of which being Arizona.

Re:meh
A modest suggestion that I hope you'll think about: if "our experience with the current administration" really concerns you, I'd like to think that part of that concern is his disregard for the Constitution.
If you agree, would you also agree that a Constitutional Law professor from one of the top law schools in the country might make a good President?

CORRECTION [was Re: Obama good, Huckabee bad]Obama does not appear to support an outright ban on semiautomatic weapons, but rather a ban based on clip size. In this interview, when asked how the Virginia Tech shootings could change the discussion on gun control:
Obama: "It's early to make a full assessment on how this changes our politics and the public mood. I think all of us are still just overwhelmed with grief for the families and for Virginia Tech and obviously people here remember what happened at the university and how painful it can be (a reference to the shootings at the University of Iowa). I do think that the evidence so far at least indicates that you've got a young man who was mentally deranged, was identified as such, was temporarily committed and was still able to obtain handguns and so one critical question is, 'What happened to our background check system? Why did it fail?' and it seems like we should be able to come to some bipartisan agreement on making that background system, background check system work. The second area which may be fought by the NRA, but I think has to be looked at is the availability of 19-round clips. I'm a strong believer in the rights of hunters and sportsmen to have firearms. I'm a believe in homeowners having a firearms to protect their home and their family. It's hard for me to find a rationale for a 19-clip semi-automatic. I said at a forum earlier this week, 'If you need 19 rounds to shoot a deer, you probably shouldn't be hunting' and so that I think is something that we should be able to have a reasonable conversation about."

Re:Productivity
I may be showing my age now, but I wish they would stop releasing new stuff and simply improve the existing stuff. The time and effort they've spent re-implementing Java could have made Vista into a kick-ass super OS that was easy to develop for and would run so efficiently I needn't have bought another 2 gig of RAM and a dual core CPU!!
Given the roots and legacy of Windows, there's really not a whole lot MS could have done with Vista to make it a kick-ass super OS short of writing it from scratch (ditch Win32) and force all existing apps to run in a sandbox the way Apple did with OS 9. There's just too much legacy stuff tying Microsoft's hands. Here's a great article comparing what Windows is now with what dBase once was: http://garywiz.typepad.com/trial_by_fire/2006/03/windows_vista_p.html Windows seems to be following a similar demise for similar reasons. What is comes down to is that Microsoft is getting to the point where the best they can offer in a new product is backwards computability with their previous products. Few people care about what NEW software they can run on Vista. Most just want it to run the same software they've always run with a little more flair and perhaps with a little more security.

Interrogated: Welcome to the New America! From the "Stolen Bikes Ride Faster" Blog. DHS deletes a research scientists' blog posts - then send in the goons to interrogate him for six hours:
As many of you now know, I was recently detained and questioned by the FBI regarding several posts on this blog. Two of the posts in question were first altered, then removed all together, by what appeared to be the Dept. of Homeland Security. I've been thinking about how to describe this experience. Last night, I talked briefly about what happened and why in an e-mail to Rich over at The New Freedom. He's got a great site over there, by the way. I've decided that that e-mail is probably about as thorough as I care to be regarding my little adventure, at least for now. Here's the copy that I sent him - I invite all of you to read it for yourselves: Hey Rich, just wanted to follow up on your comment on my blog and the post on yours. My name's Rob, by the way, hi, nice to meet you. Apparently, I actually did upset a few people with some of the information I posted. This resulted in an involuntary trip to the local FBI offices. Didn't even know they were in town - guess they're everywhere these days.
So from what I gathered in our conversation (if you can call it that - it was a bit one-sided), a couple of things set them off. They've got some tracking software sorting through everything out there, looking for certain keywords. If it picks up a keyword, you get put on a list and monitored. I got flagged the first time as a result of my post on Canada placing the US on its terror watch list. Among other things, mention of Guantanamo, Afghanistan, torture, and terrorism set the software off.
A couple of posts later, I did a parody of an interview with al-Quaeda representative Ayman al-Zawahri. This seemed to set them off, too. They wanted to know what my connections were to the group - I guess they were obligated to ask. The thing that really got them in that article was an offhand remark about the weaponization of smallpox based on some work an Australian research group did with mousepox. Here's a link to the research:
sciencedirect article
You may need a subscription to view it, I'm not sure. Anyway, I assumed that this was pretty common knowledge. Of course, I also work in biomedical chemistry, so I guess I hear some things the general public doesn't. They were really freaked out about this. Don't blame them - if you've got some time, pick up Ken Alibeck's (sp?) book on the supposedly now-defunct Russian bioterrorism program. But that's a story for another day.
The stuff about homegrown terrorism was the last straw, they said. I guess posting instructions for some lame explosives along with criticism of HR1955 pissed them off. They decided to teach me a lesson by first censoring, then removing the offending blog post. They figured that if I was posting stuff like this, it was only a matter of time before I moved on to more complex agents, based on my education and employment background. It took me about six and a half hours to convince these assholes that I'm not a terrorist. I am certain I'm on every watch list they've got now. Not looking forward to my next trip to the airport, that's for damn sure.
I guess that's about it. I appreciate your concern, and the fact that you're spreading the word - people definitely need to know about this. But standing up for your rights on paper is one thing; it's a different story when they come knocking on your door and give you the opportunity to do it in person. A word of caution: this shit is real. Do what you can to stay off of that list, man. I'm sure that it was just an odd series of coincidences that sent them my way, but better to be safe. Anyhow, I'm probably going to post briefly in the next day or two, once I have time to organize my thoughts, and then stick to the fiction from here on out. Well, let me know if you have any more questions, and keep doing what you're doing. -

Slashdot readers are smart people that can add one and one together. So, when they read why Second Life's supposed economy isn't a whole lot more than a typical pyramid scheme because the Linden company can print Linden dollars out of thin air at any rate they like, and can therefore buy and sell as much dollars at the exchange market as they like, so they can pretty much manipulate the whole SL economy as they please, they will also be able to figure out that the real US banking and monetary system can be manipulated at exactly the same way, because the Federal Reserve has enjoyed the absolute power to do literally anything it wants, which is probably why Henry Ford said he believed there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning if "the people of the nation" would "understand our banking and monetary system".
If they also read how the US corporations, owned by the same people that own the FED, systematically and consciously rape the poorest people of the world by using the trick of putting whole nations into debt to make them dependent and controllable by raising inflation tax, just as has been described in protocol number 6 of the so-called Zion protocols and continue reading that protcols, they would also understand why Henry Ford was a known anti-semite, as well as Winston Churchill, who wrote about a world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality that "has been steadily growing".
If you believe, like Ford and Churchill, in the existence of such a conspiracy, Slashdot readers would not just take for granted that it was "the Jews", but look at the most logical place for the conspiritors, which would be at the top of the pyramid, for who wars are very profitable as well, as is also described in said protocols. Why Slashdot will be on CNN tonight...
and Ron Paul will probably be the next president of the United States.

Unfair limit on deaf community
I strongly think it's really unfair to deaf community if they cap it. Deaf people now use videoconference type of relay service to communicate with the world using videophone similiar to Dlink's i2eye. Check this link below to explain why it is a problem. The blogger in this link is deaf as well as I am and having broadband connection has been one of the greatest technological achievement for us deaf people because it allows us to be independent and better access to communication.
http://jarednevans.typepad.com/blog/2008/01/time-warner-cus.html
Here are an example of video relay service. http://www.sorenson.com/ That company is one of many company that provice service to deaf and hard of hearing community.
Since internet came into being, accessibility for the deaf has improved tremendously (Sidekick, Blackberry, videophone, videorelay,WWW,and etc etc) basically we deaf finally have equal access to information easily as hearing counterpart.
So Time Warner's plan to cap broadwidth will seriously offend deaf community (5gb/a month bandwidth is equal 3.5 hrs of video phone a month). I wouldn't be surprised if FCC is investigating this.
(I think i need to go take class to learn how to write better .....LOL ) -
Absent SCOTUS, Gore won the electoral vote
If they'd taken the time to do a full and fair recount, Gore would have won. We know this because after the fact the recounts were done. While Bush would have won under some of the deals the lawyers were kicking around Gore would have won had the simply followed the laws as written.

Re:what about the fraud with Ron Paul votes?
I financially support Paul. I will vote for Paul if I get the chance, but the conspiracy folks really seem to love this X files stuff. It needs to stop.
Voting is an imperfect process, and most of the Paulites are first timers to the process. Paul himself believes the counts jibes with their internal polling, and any mistakes are innocent.
Move along. Get votes in new states. Paul may have no chance of winning without any fraud needed, but don't doubt the Republicans are listening, despite their public derision of Paul. Paul will show there is support for more libertarian ideas and sensible foreign policy. And when they get thrashed by the Dems, they will be seeking Paulite support, with candidates with less paleo baggage and more appealing personage.
If you really want to change things, stop the black helicopter fretting, and get off your ass and work the local polls. Most of these volunteer jobs go begging and that's why you get these social security mummies working the counts. Poll working is the perfect place for third-parties to start working. Make your job #1 to make the counts in your precinct clean. -

Here is an article that supports your ideas
Here is an article that supports your ideas. It appears to be a London Times editorial even though the domain name is typepad.com.
It says that some women who voted for Clinton might have been lying about it to avoid conflicts with their husbands. I hadn't consider this possibility but it makes sense to me and therefore I am less inclined to believe there was a problem with the official tally, although I'm still glad they're going to do a recount.

Re:Obama is a liar. Eat a ham of pig!!!
His cousin Odinga of Kenya is a radical muslim that signed the following paper for Jihad!!!:
http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/01/05/muslim_kenya.jpg
It says:
"ON BEHALF OF THE NATIONAL MUSLIM LEADERS FORUM (NAMLEF) ABDULLAH ABDI (chairman)"
(signed)
"ON BEHALF OF THE ORANGE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT (ODM) HON.ENG.RAILA AMOLLO ODINGA"
(signed)
https://secure.wikileaks.org/leak/MOU_between_Ralia_Odinga_and_Muslims.pdf
Obama released the Indonesian translation of his 2nd book "Assault Hope: From Jakarta to the White House".
(indonesians see it as the Jihad for White House!!!)
Obama released his 1st book: "The Dreams of my Father", <--- I suspect him of it as "the Jihad of my muslim dad!" (dreams of dad = Jihad, Father = my dad is muslim).
If Obama is U.S. Muslim President or U.S. Muslim Vicepresident then he is a GREAT RISK for the National Unsecurity and for millions of americans due to he has access to the eyes-only top secret documents of the maps and weapons of White House, Pentagon, C.I.A. etc for giving to the muslim terrorists in backdoors as from Indonesia!!!
You can imagine the hundreds of muslims of the family of Obama surrounding inside of the unprotected White House.
He IS NOT a christian black! He IS a muslim brown weared as black and as christian!
Obama is pro-Kenyan and pro-Indonesian.
Obama = jihadist brother of Osama Bin Laden to White House!
Who cares? Be less stupid american! -
Re:Don't they have anything better to do?Your ultimate point -- that publically documenting potentially illegal acts can be a foolish thing to do -- is reasonable enough, but I'm curious how you can justify your position towards children's privacy. Quoth you: Is this legal? I'd say... yes. Kids have no privacy. They aren't adults. Ignoring any school obligation to fair process or legitimate investigation into the photographs (those are murkier waters), in strictly the legal sense it has recently been ruled in an Alaskan court (10/2/2007 decision PDF) that underage females have the same right to privacy with regard to abortion (as defined by Roe v. Wade) that adult females do; requiring parental consent for abortion was decided unconstitutional. We could reasonably infer that kids can indeed at least expect greater than "no" privacy (and in matters beyond abortion), even if they are not adults. While this is the opinion of an Alaskan court, the reasoning for their decision seems sound enough that other states might find the same.

(Actually, I was going to make fun of proprietary software for the general idea of having source unavailable).
More to the point though, I received a lecture on this in a Software Architecture course a couple years ago and it struck a nerve. Even if you never need to review 99.9% of the code you run, it is nice to be able to look through the 0.1% that might be helpful for you to gain a better understanding of what is going on. And that is only possible with Open Source.

Re:OK, Let's Do the Math
"Gee, so, given that coal powerplants in the USA alone produce 1.8 millon metric tons of CO2 per year, we would need 11 million of these devices installed in the US to make American coal power carbon neutral.
+ Correction: I messed up the calculation, the actual number is 240,000 units - but stil, a ridiculous quantity. "
US Coal/CO2 emissions on the order of 2 Billion metric tons of CO2 per year...
Ergo you're off by a factor of 1000x.. (on the low side)..Let's assume 1.8 MMT of CO2 covers just one boiler.. (out of a thousand)..
240,000 ... 88 sq.. meter tracking arrays.. would need to be spaced at a ratio of at least 5 to 1, depending on latitude.Math: 240,000 * 88(min foot array foot print ) * 6 (spacing) ==
126 M sq. meters per boiler.. or an area of 126 Sq Km.. per BOILER.Some how I think the local residents would object to having 49 Sq miles per boiler covered with pipelines and large solar tracking towers. (For a US average X1000... 49,000 Sq miles
.. or 126,000 sq km.)Once you oxidized the resulting liquid fuel, one would still have the net effect of releasing GHG into the atmosphere. By all indications, Humanity needs to progress to a Carbon NEGATIVE economy. 390ppm ->350ppm. So this really isn't a long term solution.
======== Now for a real solution ===========
Meanwhile... once could accomplish most of the same effect by putting up 12,000 sq km. of 20% eff, PV solar trackers in some high desert regions (Space them out by x6) and DISPLACE ALL electric generation sources in the US..
Naturally.. we would keep generation capacity like Hydro, Wind, Biomass,. maybe some nuclear...etc..
I would also keep all the NG/combined cycle plants as backups (fueled by H2, stored in depleted NG fields.)
Using spare electricity generation to produce H2 via hybrid solar thermal/electrolysis SO2 cycle.
Note: The H2S04/SO2 process originally envisioned nuclear power supplying the thermal energy component, but desert solar thermal plants could easily substitute as the heat source, and the resulting SO2 gas stored underground awaiting excess electrical generation.Wind energy production should also be expanded by 50x..
Spare electric power would be used in highly eff SO2 +2H20 electrolysis(0.6V) phase to produce H2SO4+H2 .Modern EV's are roughly 10x more efficient than ICE vehicles, and could be used to manage grid demands on the renewable energy sources.
Note: Our society would experience a significant reduction in overall energy requirements (~30%), once the fossil fuel industry is displaced by high grade renewables.

Re:This is
Seems to be a couple years old though, this page (second story down) which includes the same photo is dated feb 2006, and includes a much better description of how it works, including how they use alternate direction rotation rings for heat conservation within the drum, although it looks like they've more recently been trying it with CO2 instead of H20. This page contains more info and diagram of the counter rotating drum. Very interesting stuff though.

I didn't realize that number was so high, but as a Canadian I could think of a couple of cases that didn't go so well for you guys (not that you haven't taken it to us as well). -
You've got the causation backwards.
Your connection of declining intelligence to liberals is nothing more than a fanciful leap of logic.
I* am not saying that "Liberals" cause stupidity.
I am saying, however, that their disinterest in "technological" issues [vis-a-vis their obsession with "social" issues], as evidenced by their performance in our current Congress, does reflect the underlying stupidity of their constituencies.
[Parenthetically: Were you aware that Obama wants to defund NASA's next generation of launch vehicles so as to be able to throw even more booty at his constituents in the National "Education" Association?]
*On the other hand, in his original work on the subject, Charles Murray did take the point of view that "Liberal" social policies have a dysgenic effect: If our government taxes the lives & behaviors of smart, industrious people, and subsidizes the lives & behaviors of lazy, stupid people, then we shouldn't be surprised when smart, industrious people come to have more and more difficulty in finding the time & financial resources necessary to make & raise babies, and that neither should we be surprised if lazy, stupid people are more than happy to move in and occupy that nature-abhorred vacuum.
[Again, parenthetically: Did you know that the bottom 50% of Americans pay no income taxes whatsoever? Or that the top 1% of Americans pay more income tax than the bottom 90%? Or that the average low-skilled citizen costs the government more than $19,500 per year every year of his life?]
Now I agree with Murray that the financial aspects of government social policy can impart some inertia in the general direction of fertility rates [be those rates dysgenic or eugenic], but I don't think for a second that the fiscal burden of "Liberalism" is the primary culprit here: There is something far more evil at work in the Death of the Civilized World, and "Liberalism" is merely a very poor, rather dim shadow of that Evil.
A shadow of A Shadow, if you will. -
I think it was the .com boom, among other things.
There's an excellent article I read about it; I think it's a combination of factors. By nature, a lot of geeks are raised in comparative isolation; the internet has made it even easier to surround oneself only with people who agree with you; there's a disdain for "lesser" people that comes from years of wedgies. It's part of the standard high-school rant that those damned bullies are going to be pumping your gas one day, and why on earth would a geek who's Gotten His try to better that bully's position in life?
(I should disclaim that the above is just cultural criticism, and it's very far from empirical. You'd have to be David Brooks or someone like him to think that that constitutes an actual explanation for the streak of libertarianism that runs through geek culture.)
On a less hand-wavey level, I think there's something very appealing (especially to geeks) about the idea that one can deduce the entirety of politics from first principles. (I speak here of the Non-Aggression Principle.) The problem with this, as Seth Finkelstein points out, is that it just moves the complexity to the definitions of your terms, which are beyond debatability in your edge of the libertarian tent, in much the same way as fundamentalist churches claiming that their sole authority is the bible sweep their assumptions under the rug by pretending that they're not making any. (Fred the Slacktivist has some good discussion on the topic; also here.)
Heck, I went through a libertarian phase when I was profoundly ignorant of how history actually worked. I grew out of it by the time I got to college; it looks like a lot of people never got that far. -

Re:Good, maybe REAL artists will now have a chance
Many people regard them as total sellouts and possessive to no actual talent or creativity... they are a hit generator, which is exactly the kind of thing that they play on pop/rock radio
Someday, there will be a thread about the RIAA without all this elitist bullshit. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH POP? I like meatloaf, bubblegum, McDonald's hamburgers, pizza, Mountain Dew, and pop music. Music is not the center of my life, nor is it the apex of the arts. It's enjoyable noise that makes my commute more pleasant. You don't like pop? Fine. The rest of the world does. Not because it's what's been forced down their throats, but because they didn't study enough to learn that they're not supposed to like it--whatever the fuck that means.
Go find a classical music snob and ask him what he thinks about the music you like. ("Radiohead? HA!") While you're at it, ask a chef what he thinks of your dinner selection, a car enthusiast what he thinks of your ride, and the unwashed masses of Slashdot about your operating environment and text editor of choice. Maybe send these folks a picture of what you're wearing right now. There is no dispute concerning taste. (And I refer to the Latin form of that phrase not because I'm a language snob but to make the point that this idea has been around for a long, long time.) And while you're out gathering all these opinions (as if they matter), I highly recommend hitting a bookstore (NOT a video store) and checking out High Fidelity.
Note that this doesn't mean I like the RIAA's tactics, but that's unrelated to what they happen to sell. They could sell bottled water, or own baseball teams, or make operating systems and office suites--they'd behave the same way and they'd still be assholes for doing it.
Ask yourself this: pick any band you like. Imagine they get picked up by the RIAA. Does that make their music bad? Imagine they become unexpectedly, insanely popular and spawn a whole new world of music, Sprite ads, flannel-based fashion, and extreme sports. Does that make their music bad?
If your reflex is to tell me "Nirvana really sucked, Pearl Jam and Soundagarden were the real geniuses" then you're missing my point--ignore the band I chose as an example. Just imagine any band you like in their place.
PS: I'm not picking on you in particular. I could have replied to any of a dozen posts in this thread. -
Re:As things go ...
World production of crude oil maxed out at 85 million barrels per day this year. (yes they have a slight hiccup for October at 86 million, probably due to rounding)
http://www.worldoil.com/INFOCENTER/STATISTICS_DETAIL.asp?Statfile=_worldoilproduction
We will only know when the peak is AFTER the peak. If we cannot reach 85 or 86 mbpd next year, then we've gone past peak. This information is so obvious and yet there are lots of people in denial. Oil hit $100 a barrel this year. Next year look for $200 a barrel. The entire world economy is about to self destruct and we have millions of people taking the blue pill.
Why in hell would we be trying to get oil out of the tar sands if there was lots of sweet crude in the 1000 meter holes typically found in Alberta? We've used most of it up and nobody wants to say so because of the panic that would ensue.
If you want to take the red pill and find out how bad it really is, read kunstler. http://jameshowardkunstler.typepad.com/clusterfuck_nation/

Re:Wind Turbines are the Easy Way
There certainly is enough wind energy to power the world. Just the Mid-Atlantic US coast has up to 330GW of power. And that's not even counting the onshore, or the Great Lakes. And besides, I'm just talking about replacing filthy nukes, not every energy source - I even named some more. But eventually harnessing the power of cyclones could probably deliver enough power for the whole world, and reduce the cyclone damage that all that petrofuel pollution has created.

Learn legal-speak
Tell me, what does "obtains actual knowledge of any facts or circumstances described in paragraph" mean in a court of law? Is it "obtains" as in "reads them"? As in"stored them on a computer"? As in "stored in memory"? I don't profess to be a lawyer, so I don't really know the answer to this. However, I've seen enough legal decisions in the past where a perfectly common sense sentence targeted on hardcore criminals was twisted to include consensual sex, basic computer operations and daily life. I don't trust lawyers, judges or juries to always come to the right decision, and I suspect there'll be plenty of cases where this law will be abused. If you can't imagine the scenarios.... I hope they'll never happen to you.

http://hypebot.typepad.com/hypebot/2007/07/itunes-hits-3-b.html/
7/31/07: Apple announces hitting the 3 Billion mark with it's iTunes downloads. Now, assuming that an equivalent amount have been distributed illegally since the inception of the internet we can come up with a conservative estimate of what the damages would look like.
$9,250 per song x 3,000,000,000 songs = $27,750,000,000,000
For those of your not used to so many zeroes that's 27.75 trillion dollars. You would have to almost take every sale of music since Edison first made the Phonograph to come up with that kind of money.

Re:Or...
Wait, you're suggesting by "I dont know of any company that could afford to beat out the fossil fuel companies to do so." that there aren't companies in the US trying to make money off alternative energy? Further, lots of state governments are actively trying to promote alternative energy, which undermines the theory that the government is afraid of a tax revenue collapse. State governments are subsidizing alternative energy using those very tax revenues, in the hopes that home-grown alternative energy producers will create even more tax revenue in the future.
I hate to sound like a slashvertisement, but I think the following US companies and groups would all disagree with you:
Evergreen Solar (producer based in Mass.)
Heliodyne (producer based in California)
Google (installing panels on its roof)
Solar Energy Industry Association (US trade group)
Tesla Motors) (selling 100% electric cars in the US)
List of solar manufacturers in the US
US solar power installations increase 33% year-to-year
The New York Times has a story about this issue: "Venture Capital Rushes into Alternate Energy" suggesting that $1.5 billion in VC money was invested in 2006 alone in new companies who hope to profit from overthrowing the energy status quo. If you add private equity money then there was $18.1 billion in dealflow in 2006 in the alternate energy sector. Or listen to a 2004 story about the same issue.
It's nice to think that there's some great conspiracy against alternate energy, but the simple truth is that there is a lot of market action in the field and nothing stopping people from making money in it. There is a HUGE amount of money to be made from alternate energy and plenty of people are trying to make it. -

the Theory of Metabolic Advantage
No, a calorie is not a calorie, and you don't get fat from eating calories. There is increasing research evidence, and a great deal of anecdotal evidence, that carbs cause the weight gain, the high cholesterol, the diabetes, the heart disease. Exercise can help, but the basic answer is chemical. The calorie theory is outdated, and anyone who has tried it for the last 30 years knows it does not work. It is simplistic, and easy to conceive, but a physics lie. The new metabolic dynamic is just as simple and plausible, and by all accounts, far more effective. Scientists agree individually that insulin's primary role is to drive fat production, and carbs primary effect is to drive insulin secretion. So why not take the logical next step and treat fat by reducing carbs? Scientists can't seem to follow their own simple, straightforward logic. Taubes is not saying that exercise has no place in health. He is specifically saying that it does not directly cause weight loss. Taubes agrees with the other benefits of exercise and exercises himself. He is just making the point that medical claims need to be checked for validity by research, which they often have not been. Do not just believe what health "experts" tell you to believe. You should not listen to any doctor who still believes in the low-fat or caloric model of nutrition. Taubes is not a researcher, is a journalist. He is just honestly reporting what the research actually says, which has often been covered up, and the medical community is running scared. Taubes is asking for the research to be done, and the research community is desperately resisting it. Something is rotten in Denmark and Taubes is merely exposing it. While not related, I had played through the Halflife 2 Epsiode 2 commentary and they mentioned something about the flashlight battery now being separate from the main HEV sprinting battery, and their argument was that they weren't going to make the game less fun just for the sake of a keeping bad game design decision true throughout the lifespan of the series.
That said, I've always felt this was the most compelling argument for allowing for new things to happen without always resorting to time travel: http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/files/ST2004Reboot.pdf
