I think Hague's piece, while it's a bit heavy on the nostalgia, does have one good point in it: As 3D-rendered worlds get more and more complex, the level design will be inevitably more and more time-consuming.

However, he doesn't note the business model that successful FPS games have used to overcome that problem: They open up the level-design specs, and make it possible for anybody to design their own level. That, plus the recent phenomena of near-universal Internet access, means that you can find people out there willing to give their work away for free as long as they get one e-mail's worth of praise for it. Egoboo is a powerful thing.

This puts a pretty radical paradigm shift into the gaming world: Your users determine the game's level design and play pattern. The most obvious example is that they can control the spacing and variety of obstacles (puzzles, enemies, etc.). But there are also people who have used the basic 3D engine at the heart of an FPS and applied them to uses that most people would have never predicted, including:

It would be incorrect to argue that 3D-rendered games will lead to a lack of diversity in play. (They won't even completely eclipse other types of games: There will always be people who like Tetris or Scrabble or poker.) In some ways, 3D games represent a broadening of play that's pretty much unprecedented.

I've just checked the page, it looks nice that compaq has gpled it... yet another reason not to just bash alphalinux for its lack of performance: 64 bit, and black magic profiling capabilities ;-)

About page coloring, this is something I heard freebsd does and not linux. myth or reality? I don't know.

So far, to reduce bottlenecks all I've done was to try and use sparse solvers, as I can get quite a few 0s in my system (up to a ridiculous 97%) But yep, you still need some profiling to get your code just right, especially if you have several \emph{blocks} working together in your code.

if you're interested, the libraries I'm using for sparse solvers are meschach (great but sparse documentation) and since yesterday sparse QR (I can't tell yet if it's any better than some of the solvers in meschach, but it looks nice nonetheless...).

When, not if, your cool new console gets hackish add-ons, what would be the coolest features you would like to see? Will you incorporate the best hacks into new games for those who have them? Will you come out with non-game features or applications for those who want to re-use their hardware for other things like controlling robots or network management?

The wacky world of depth. I still think a concept that is going to see its time come eventually is the 3d interface. Someone has already mentioned psDoom and the Doom System Administration Tool. At the time when the Doom SysAdmin program was on ./ for the first time, someone mentioned that humans have a much better spacial memory than they do for abstract data like text or numbers. I don't remember the number for the pizza guy, but I never forget that the phone book sits next to the phone. We're used to reasoning with relation to spacial objects, knowing what sort of things should be where. A 3d interface doesn't require the sort of complex "jack in your nervous system" schlock that always emerges from Cyberpunk novels; for a lot of people, something like Doom would be good enough. Just post some signs on a wall or something. Moving from room to room in a building is intuitive; it's something we do every day of our lives, from a very young age. A 3d interface takes advantage of our natural inclination to use sight as our primary sense. Figuring out the 'theme' of a room or a location is much easier for most people than figuring out and recalling something abstract, like what files end up in what directory. It's worth some research, I think, and I hope people continue to look into it.

psDoom symbolises processes as monsters in a modified version of Doom - you kill a process by killing the associated monster.

psDoom is based upon Dennis Chao's Doom Sysadmin Tool project, which also jots has some further thoughts on the application of this concept to actual process management in an environment with multiple users and administrators. This actually made the front page of Slashdot last year.

This is vastly simpler then trying to fit yourself into your buddies' flat bed scanner.

Another possibility would be to lure your boss into one of these 3-d scanners so that you could take pot shots whenever you wanted.

Or, even better - add this to the DOOM-sysadmin interface to add user's faces to the processes that they spawned, and are littering your machine - that way you could get some real personal job satisfaction doing your sysadmin work.

No one is claiming that DNA computing can solve a problem better than silicon computing. Yet. That is viewed as the holy grail of the field. DNA computing is simply one way that we may end up doing molecular level computing. It has plenty of drawbacks, and the jury is still out on whether or not it will ever be useful, but the excitement is over the fact that you can do such massively parallel (optimistically 10^20 operations) computations. My guess is that it will won't replace silicon as a general purpose medium for computation, but rather that we will find some specialized uses for it. Laura Landweber (big shot in the field and cool person) at Princeton has some good ideas along these lines. It is a hot new field, and a lot of people are now working on it. There is a lot of work to be done just in quantifying and then controlling errors in the processes. It might also be noted that we have only begun to mine biology for useful enzymes to be used in computation.

If you want to read more about DNA computing, the best source is the set of 5 DIMACS proceedings (DNA Computers, DNA Computers II, etc.). If you would like a more in depth review of the field, I published one in Evolutionary Computation 6:201-230. You can find a postscript version here. It was designed to be readable by computer types and to bring you up to speed such that you could start contributing to the field. I don't know how well it fared in this department. Unfortunately, it now a bit out of date. A more up to date version will come out soon in a collection on Molecular Computing edited by Tanya Sienko from MIT Press.

Well, this is not a very tech article. It doesn't say how fast is the high speed network.

Anyway, I'm managing a 60 alpha XP1000 cluster connected with a 100Mbit network and I'm using a Cisco Catalyst. If you check their page, you'll see that the Catalyst 8500 can have 128 port switch for 10/100 Mbit. While only 64 for Gigabit connections.

Indeed you should see how much your parallel jobs are communicating with each other and how much traffic they have to support. Sure you don't want to spend a fortune in gigabit connections if you're sending out very few packets.
I'm pretty confident that a 100Mb will do for most of you out there!

If you want Netscape as a "texture" on one wall then you should look at this which is a demo for 3Dwm that seems to be shaping up quite nicely.

In terms of zombie processes REALLY becoming zombies then you definately want to be playing with Doom as a tool for system administration.

Whenever somebody tells me that Windows is much easier to use than Linux, I explain to them that Linux is also quite easy to use (today), even "out of the box", if you accept the same restrictions that you do with newer versions of Windows.

If you pay money for a commercial distribution with support (still cheaper than Windows, and you get all those programming languages!), use an up-to-date processor, and only use hardware that have drivers in your distro, Linux GUIs are very easy to use. The difference is that open source distros let you take other options. I can refuse to run any program that doesn't show up on my Gnome menu, but I can download and port other people's software as well. I take an additional risk if I do so, but commercial closed-source software doesn't give me the option in the first place.

You're using it.

Take a look at Slashdot, and the Slash code. This is a very powerful tool with a large collection of options that's very simple to use. I can customize the way Slashdot appears with very little effort at all. My Slashboxes (on the right hand side) are the ones I choose in the order I want them. I've killed some of the graphics and the book reviews. I sort the replies at level 3 and drop my threshold or read responses when desired.

Open Source does not mean bad interfaces. For the most part Open Source is new enough that the core engines are still being built.

Do we need another good example? How about the Linux Doom Admin interface. Point and kill those tasks.

Linux fails the "mom" test not because of geek superiority, but because there have been other needs that are of a higher priority. Many closed source systems have decided to make user friendly systems that don't function. Linux has decided to make sure the dang thing works and then they'll make it look nice, and that's an order of priority I can live with.

Open Source does care about the end user. What the end user of Linux wanted was a stable product that worked and didn't need to be rebooted daily.

If you want ease of use over stability, you already have a company that makes that product. Meanwhile, it's not like Linux isn't still being improved and no one is preventing a good looking interface from being created.

Besides, even the big companies have an interface problem. Neoplanet almost brought me back to I.E. and it's getting combined with Mozilla on my home machine this weekend for a serious Version 13 test drive. Closing the source does not a good GUI make.

No, that's the kind of research you would be doing, Spiny. :) I think it's called 'zoom,' of all the uncreative things out there. I dunno, and I'm too tired to look it up on the UNM CS website (too tired to even see if that's the right URL for the department). This is an interface project that's been going on for, like, 10 years now (I know they had a lot of work put in when I was in middle school). When I saw it running on an SGI Indigo back then, it was the coolest thing ever, aside from 'ant: the movie' running in the background. :)

One major part of the price is all the networking hardware. One really nice thing about the cluster is that it has three different connection between nodes (myrinet, 100baseTX, and one other one that I can't remember right now). The Myrinet connections cost $2K to say the least.

Funny this was mentioned. I just went over there today (it's right across the street from where I am now). It's part of their new "Visualization Lab". This is the room that all of us dream about. 8-10 terminals consisting of Suns, linux boxes =], SGIs and wintel boxes (the most impressive is the 8 R10K processor, 1 gig ram, Infinite Reality, Onyx2). As well as a 6' x 10' 3d projection screen (you wear nifty little glasses) and VR gear that sits idly in the corner calling to that secret place in our subconsious. Perfect lighting control, incredible sound, climate control, comfortable seating, and unlimited computing resource at your disposal (almost). You don't even have to deal with the hum of the computers. They're all in the next room. I'm just waiting for them to install the kitchenette and bathroom then I'm moving in.
