Re:Google plus
I have dropped my Gmail account and have gone to http://gmx.com/
For video upload, I will be using Vimeo instead of Youtube.And the sole reason is the push they want to give to Google+ and the sneakiness they use to let you click to be connected to Google+
Watching video's, I still do. I now use Unique Youtube Skin to have a much better layout and not have the mobies play automagically,. so I can open several tabs and watch them one after the other.

I threw together a GM Script to fix the width issue. I plan on expanding it and tweaking it a bit, assuming they ignore the feedback and don't address it on the Beta site. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/179020

Re:No need for Google's JavaScript on YouTube
Also, the add-on LinkTube replaces embedded video with a link, which you can feed to youtube-dl or to the other programmes.

No need for Google's JavaScript on YouTube
There are lots of alternatives that can play back YouTube videos without using Google's JavaScript or Adobe Flash (e.g. ViewTube, youtube-dl, UnPlug, quvi and youtube-viewer (which also supports viewing comments).

Re:Only Opt out of Being Reminded
First steps I do after creating a new Firefox profile:
- Set Firefox to reject 3rd party cookies and remove all cookies on session end
- Disable all Plugins except Flash and your favorite media player's plugin; gecko-mediaplayer for example.The point is them not even appearing in navigator.plugins. (If you're on Windows(/Mac?), you'll have to repeat this check after every Skype/Office/.NET/Adobe Reader/whatever update. My condolences).
- Install Ghostery, RefControl, "Click to Play switch", Scriptish - all from addons.mozilla.org.
- Install ViewTube & LinkTube from userscripts.org
- Set Ghostery (twice - the intial configuration wizard is not enough!) to
- Block all 3pes by default
- Not display the Alert Bubble
- Auto-update the library and block new elements by default
- Not use GhostRank (it sends every single URL you visit to their servers, right when you visit it)
- Delete Flash cookies on browser exit
- Set RefControl to block sending referers to 3rd party sites
After all of this, I can enable referer sending or cookie/other data persistence per site using RefControl or Firefox's Page Info dialog.
Also, I try to restart the browser at least once a day.
It should be obvious from the above that a) I'm only against being tracked across the web, not ads or analytics done on the same site, and b) it's an uphill battle, and ultimately futile as most browsers (and especially Plugins) leak information in any way they can (plugin/font/javascript feature lists and many more) by default.
Browsers other than Firefox are even worse at this, as they don't allow Extensions to interfere with requests as much. And of course, as soon as you run a Plugin it is game over for privacy on that site at best.

Re:Please include flash!
Once I switched to a YouTube downloader for FF
Youtube downloaders are good. I have one installed for when I want to download the videos. If you want to play them instead, here's a good option:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/87011
It plays they embedded or fullscreen, but using MPlayer, so even my venerable eee 900 can keep up with moderately HD video (not 1080p).
But yeah, I have flash on faster laptops for tower defense games too.
Have you tried the Creeper World series?
-
Re:Please include flash!
And yes, YouTube's autoplay is very annoying, espescially if you open the video in a new tab. I wish I knew how to just have it disabled globally.
There’s a GreaseMonkey “user script” called YousableTubeFix. If installed, it helps getting rid of many YouTube annoyances – including the completely needless autoplay feature.

Re:Access
Don't you think you might be projecting just a teensy bit? Most people aren't suffering when they watch a video on youtube. Neither are their computers.
If you're a sophisticated enough user to care about the number of cycles mplayer uses versus flash, you should be sophisticated enough to, say, install a userscript like ViewTube
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/87011
...that will send the video format (codec and size) of your choice to a non-flash player of your choice. You can even download the video and watch it offline later!Those rare individuals who can't watch a flash video and can't figure out why are probably not suffering either, because they probably don't care.

Re:Steam Link
I didn't think I'd live to see the day where I found a DRM scheme I was happy with, and Steam is it. Unlikely other DRM schemes, Steam actually adds some new incentives, so it's worth considering.
Cons:
I can't lend or sell games.
My GF can't play a game I bought on her computer at the same time I'm playing one on mine.
If I lose internet connection, it's a crapshoot whether I'll be able to play or not (you usually can, but I've had issues where Steam's offline mode didn't work)
Hypothetically possible that Steam could shut down in the future, causing me to lose access to everything I've bought.Pros:
Always have access to all the games I've bought
Easy to install any game I want on any computer I want
Don't have to keep track of any physical media, license keys, download links, or other paraphernalia.
Frequent sales and competitive pricing for older content.In my case, I decided that the pros outweigh the cons, and I'm willing to trade those rights away for the benefits I receive. I feel that it's a fair trade.
Incidentally, you do need to be careful when buying games on Steam that they're not encumbered with additional DRM above and beyond Steam itself. Here's an excellent user script (for Chrome or FF w/Greasemonkey) that warns you of any mention of additional DRM on a game page. It's saved me numerous times from buying something I really would have regretted. That's one big issue I have with Steam, that they allow this bullshit and that they don't make it more obvious when it exists.

Re:You get what you pay/wait for
I *know* 500 thumbs are going to be a ridiculous amount of bandwidth.
You could simply do like this Greasemonkey script and attach new thumbnails at the bottom of the page when the user scrolls down.
That's user interface design. Which, BTW, marketing ALSO has no fscking clue about. Marketing should be doing *marketing* and that's it.
You mean like deciding what the marketing materials, such as company website and its photo gallery, should look and feel like?

Re:It like the 80's never ended in San Fran
You can get all the functionality you ever wanted except distance search by using user javascript. I am using Craigslist Fusion to get more functionality. It's still not pretty but it sings and dances. I only use it on my multicore desktop, though, not on my subnotebooks.
With that said, I really want distance search, and craigslist is actually designed to prevent it. The theory is that it will encourage local shopping. But if what I want isn't available here, then I'm still going to want to go get it from somewhere else, and I'm still going to look at other craigslists for it.

Re:Lenovo mini
Children can break anything. Why not get something that's cheap to replace?
...especially leopards.
Before buying anything find out exactly how easy it is to get hold of and fit a new leopard. Some brands sell leopards online directly to consumers and they pop right out if you know exactly where to press, others need you to disassemble the entire machine and put together a purchase order before they'll even bother to find somebody to talk to who knows the correct order code.
PS: I've been through the mill on this one. I usually replace laptop leopards right after purchase to get rid of the icky local leopard layout.
I like it when the online-ordered leopards pop right out.

Re:Cloud = For Suckers
I have already re-purposed one of those word-replacing Greasemonkey scripts to do exactly that a long time ago.
But restrict it to tech sites. Otherwise you end up reading e-mails from your girlfriend (via web-mail) about being "on for suckers nine".

remove +1!
I recommend this GM script. I wonder how many people will +1 this. ha ha ha.

Re:I really wish...
Thanks, but I tried that... It turns out that I intentionally don't stay signed in to Google services, so I wrote a userscript for Grease-Monkey instead.
// ==UserScript== // @name F-Experts-Exchaneg // @namespace http://userscripts.org/users/useridnumber // @include http://www.google.com/search // ==/UserScript==
var f = 1;
while ( f ) {
var a = document.getElementsByTagName('a');
f = 0;
for ( var i = 0; i < a.length; ++i )
if ( a[i].href.match('experts-exchange.com') ) try {
f = 1;
var p = a[i];
while ( p != null ) {
if ( p.tagName == 'LI' ) {
p.parentNode.removeChild( p );
break;
} else p = p.parentNode;
}
if ( p == null ) a[i].parentNode.removeChild( a[i] );
} catch ( x ){}
}
void(0);
(Sorry for the formatting, still haven't figured out how to keep slash from eating my s.)
I also have a script to remove all the "ads" links on search results -- Now that they don't color their backgrounds yellow or light-blue and I'm tired of accidentally clicking them. While I was at it I removed the non-intrusive side-bar ads too. Your move Google.

Re:You're at their mercy
Running experiment now...So I posted a link to a greasemonkey script that blocks facebook ads: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/46560 It's been an hr now and my friend and I can still see it on my profile.
Try posting a link to The Pirate Bay, for example (even in a chat). It disappears immediately for me.

Re:You're at their mercy
....See how long it takes for your status to disappear. Or if it doesn't, ask your friends if they can see it, you might find that it has been made invisible to everyone but you.

Re:I'd miss the Firefox addons
YouTube downloader is an uderscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/62634
Script blocking: supported internally under chrome://settings/content
Downloading Flash files: press Ctrl+shift+i (or F12 on a beta), click on Resources, right-click on the SWF file you want to save. Maybe I should make a userscript that should make this easier, though.I have no idea what CW is so I guess you could miss that extension, but most of the other things should be possible in Chrome, as you can see. So it's mostly up to taste at that point.
-
Platypus and Aardvark let you edit ugly pages
That's what the Firefox extension, Platypus is for... unfortunately, it's no longer maintained, but Aardvark can produce similarly readable web pages without out too much work. Combine that with the Greasemonkey script, Autopagerize to join those multi-page articles designed to make you look at a whole new set of advertisements for each paragraph, and you come a little closer to having the experience that Tim Berners-Lee had in mind for the world wide web in the first place.

Firefox does have a Greasemonkey script which adds a killfile for a number of blogging platforms, and another one for rot-13 support. I'm told other major browsers have similar addons.

Re:pdf
PDF/A is an open standard. In contrast to Adobe Reader and to free alternatives (Foxit, Sumatra), the integrated PDF viewer in Chrome is fast and lightweight. I'm using Chrome as the standard PDF viewer now, it's very basic but I rarely need more. It would be great to have that in Firefox too. At the moment I'm using Google Docs Viewer with this userscript, but it only works for public documents (not local or https) and the rendering is slow and blurry.

Experts Exchange is great, here's how to read itThere are three ways to read the meat in those experts-exchange links.
- Click on the Google Cache link and scroll to the bottom. After all the censored answers and a really large navigation bar, you'll see the real answers.
- Spoof your browser's User Agent to be Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html) using any of a plethora of extensions (I use Prefbar).
- Using the Greasemonkey add-on, install a userscript that does it for you, like Experts-Exchange Answers.

Re:TFA is evil
Interestingly, Facebook doesn't seem to make unfriends too easy to find - they consider the greasmonkey script to be "abusive or spammy" and won't allow me to forward it to somebody within the fb message service.
