Shameless plugs
http://www.vgmix.com/ http://remix.overclocked.org/ The two best VG remix sites I know. Much better than the OSTs, mostly because you've heard those variations a million times already.

Re:It's ok...
The Bubble Bobble one is hilarious.

Re:It's ok...
virt did a few a capella game tunes a while back (bottom of the page).

Don't forget OCR and VGMix
All fans of video game music remixes should also know of Overclocked Remix and VGMix.com. There's some really great talent floating around these sites, combined with all those nifty tunes you've been humming for the last 20 years.

Re:Eliza anyone?
there indeed are couple of IRC bots implementing Eliza talking engine, my favourite one is the cybersex bot (make sure to read couple of it's logs. there also exists an eliza extension for eggdrop.

Re:Remembrance
I know others have mentioned it in this thread, but do have a look at OCRemix.org and VGMix.com. Both have some very nice remixes of FF music. (OCRemix even has a remix of the FF6 theme in homage to Uematsu from Jeremy Soule, composer for quite a few recent games.) Finally, for the original stuff, I'd suggest having a look at Zophar's Domain. One of the reasons I still use WinAmp and not iTunes or such is for the SNESAmp plugin to play the SNES SPC files.

Re:Yup
Has anyone ever noticed that what everyone *really* wants is a sex chatbot?
Take a look at Jenny18. :-)
An experiment someone ran on IRC to fool perverts. -
Re:Some more...
Also worth taking a look at is VGMix.com, which has all sorts of mixes up, even some kind of obscure ones (there's a great mix from the b&w GB follow-up to DKC - Donkey Kong Land - there, too, called 'Flash Flooded', which is highly recommended).
OtherSteve.com also has a couple of nifty mixes in the Downloads section. -
Re:Licensing issues
Nintendo does have every right to do as they please with their copyrighted work. So far they've either not noticed well-established places like OverClocked ReMix, VGMusic, or VGMix, or they've decided not to care, OR ideally, they welcome reinterpretations of their music. The music of Kong in Concert is non-commercial, free, and credited to Nintendo and the original composers (Robin Beanland, Eveline Fischer, and Dave Wise).
If imagining doomsday scenarios and ruminating over legalese is your thing, go for it :) We hope you're enjoying our fan service in the meantime. -
Re:Missing the point
The idea is not that games should create new forms of music,
the idea is that music can change a game from being 7 points rated
up to 8 points.
Play any game, especially like Silent Hill or Doom3, and you will
not be able to say that what you hear does not add to the tension
in the game.
Music should be same. Music should add to the game.
Old Commodore 64 games had powerfull music. It played while game
was loading, it was not ambient, it carried a tune which you could
whistle. Can you whistle to me the Doom3 tune? its too ambient
and its too bland. Can you whistle to me Duke Nukem 3d tune? YUP!
Another point, a remarkable game that broke grounds with music
was Jedi Knight (not sure if 1 or 2), depending on whats happening
(or about to) the music tone would change from being peacefull
minuet to a violent orchestral explosions.
Here is another thing, visit remix.overclocked.org
or vgmix.com and count remixes, both
sites sport slightly more than 1000 remixes for ALL platforms
from handhelds, through consoles, to pc based games. Then visit
a site like remix.kwed.org and you
will see 1000 remixes of c64 games alone.
That should tell you how memorable c64 music is, and how little
people recall and liked music from other system.
music should be memorable
music should add to the game
music should not be treated as the background ambient noise

Re:FFV albumYeah, I very much agree with you about Black Mages, and I hope they do put out a sequel (there's enough good battle themes that they missed the first time around to warrant it...). I do check out OC Remix every so often; some of the FF stuff is great, but I have a particular liking for the Sonic remixes
:) VGMix has some good stuff as well-- not as much as OC Remix, but still worth checking out.I'd assumed the language was Finnish since a good chunk of the album was recorded in Helsinki. Thanks for the info!

Re:One of the more compelling arguments
Don't forget VGMix, which I'd rank as superior to OC Remix in every way. Look up a song like "Destiny, zyko - Dragon's Prayer," and try and tell me that video game music remixes cannot be great.

Well, there's always
vgmix. Only trouble is the guys who run that site are a real bunch of assholes....some clown named Jake (virt) and his girlfriend. There are some good tunes there, but the admins are the ideal pimply-faced nerds who have nothing better to do than go on lock posts and send you nasty PMs whenever you don't agree with them. They also had the exceptionally retarded idea of making the entire web site into a MMORPG, so they'll prohibit you from doing certain things on the site if you haven't "gained enough levels." Go, leech his bandwith for some occasionally cool tunes, but when it comes to the freaks that inhabit that site, stay far, far away. If you don't believe me, just check out this picture. And if it's at all believable, he's one of the more normal ones...Yowzer. Tights...

brand new NES music
virt just relased his chip tune disk fx 2.0 on monotonik. the professional game musician, who made the soundtracks of several games on the nintendo platform, re-scored 15-year-old nintendo titles from konami, as if he were actually soundtracking them at the time. you can download them there for beer -- and have a look at that great cover!

A couple grey issues...
Remixes: I'm a big fan of video game remixes, for instance. In cases like those, there's next to no legal issues involved, and there should be no charge. Similarly though, would other types of remixes be immune, even if they extensively used clips from existing songs?
Unusual selections: If a radio station had, for instance, old audio commercials, which although possibly copywritten, would generally raise no major issues over lost income for the owners, would those follow similar charges? How about theme songs, or approved short song clips?
On a related note, would station creators be responsible for metering just what was being played at all times, and to how many people? The sheer processor use and disk space required to keep such a log alone would bankrupt most online radio stations, I'd think.

Re:nice topicmidi files are a good one.
I loooooove listening to the secret of monkey island 1 midis, plus the Mario Concerto, which you can find right here.
