Apparently what we're dealing with here is a simplistic (and frankly, rather haphazard in this respect at least) string-matching algorithm that could have come right out of the early 1970s...!

These three companies primarily want
- to continue to make money from us, by showing they're paying attention, and
- to not get thrown in jail.

I expect, like Lauren Weinstein (http://factsquad.com, https://lauren.vortex.com/2016...), that labelling fake news will be the most likely approach. That avoids the jail problem (:-))

To ensure they look "fair", I suspect that crowd-sourcing is the way theywill get leads, but not how the initial decision to label will be made. I expect them to do a sort --unique and feed the results to a human, handle a level or so of appeals internally, and eventually take objections to mediation, with appeals to the courts.

That's how a lot of similar problems, like consumer packaging rules, are handled in Canada. It may be the same in the 'States, but I wouldn't know.

Slashdot's response to this story is such an epic fail. You guys are so fucking dumb. If I were the new owner I'd be thinking I totally wasted my money on a site no smarter or better informed than a facebook wall.

The aggressive ignorance displayed in this story's comments and worse, consistently up-voted, is just disheartening. Slashdot isn't dead, but it has been subsumed by the eternal september.

I'm forced to agree with this Slashdot poster. The use of a red X in this context will confuse users about perfectly correct and properly working websites, particularly legacy sites that carry no practical risks and contain widely referenced information, but that cannot be upgraded to SSL in a practical manner. The most likely outcome will be users learning to ignore such warnings completely because they will be so widely present and widely viewed as "crying wolf." It is also likely that many sites will push back against Google on this by posting explicit messages on their pages explaining to users that Google is playing Mommy and that nothing is wrong with their sites. It is perfectly acceptable and reasonable for Google to encourage the use of SSL. However, the approach being discussed is not helpful and is likely to even be counterproductive. It should, but the Feds are already interfering with it too much. This rule-making by unelected bureaucrats is just the foot in the door. Next up is PROTECT-IP, and E-PARASITE, then ACTA, then more and more control. Actually, I want real network neutrality. I don't trust the government to provide it, they have proven to be entirely untrustworthy in that regard. I don't trust the ISPs, either, but every time there has been a problem with them blocking or throttling anything, it didn't last very long once people started complaining. When was last time a Federal agency was that responsive? And if this 155 page rule from the FCC turns out to cause problems, how long before anything is done about it?

Maybe. But, then, the FDA now works for the Big Pharma and Big Ag and all the latest regulations are about protecting them and reducing consumer choice. Clean air and clean water are, of course, great to have, but even if the delta smelt is more important that some of the richest farm land in Southern California (not to mention all the farmers), it's not even clear that turning all that farm land into desert is going to do anything for the little smelts anyway.

In any case, if you really want to ever have a voice in government, it's probably better that these things are decided by representative that are accountable to the voters, rather than unelected bureaucrats. If you actually read the regulations that the FCC wrote, you might be less inclined to defend them.

This extreme oversimplification has to stop. We aren't "giving the government the ability to regulate the internet" we are "restricting the ability for corporations to interfere with the internet." You are oversimplifying things so far that they actually mean the opposite.

It's not an oversimplification, because the regulations are far-reaching and quite specific. There are several provisions obviously included to appease a few corporations, and several that fail to protect consumers as content creators, and actually make it more difficult and likely more expensive for them. I suggest that you go read the rules before claiming that it's not "giving the government the ability to regulate the internet".

One of the things we learned in the DNS wars is the lobbing technique of AT&T. The spend millions of dollars on this, and anywhere you turn you find AT&Y wonks buying dinner and drinks for anybody of import, aside from the lobbying efforts inside DC. Congress critters are so receptive to this it just isn't funny.

Lauren is heavily involved with net.neutrality and has been around for ages. I met him when he was a Lucent (Bell Labs) guy, he had the office next to Brian Reid.

I call shenanigans on the parent posting. This is FUD, and mis-informed FUD at that. There's no evidence that Chrome sends anything but the *hash* of the site you type in the address bar, and does not send your browsing history anywhere at all - whether in incognito mode or not.
