Re:Time for the west to quit exporting 'waste'
A Dutch documentary recently showed Africans are now getting rich by recycling discarded mobile phones or "urban mining". Loads of rare metals in those things.

Brein logo...
Googling for the brein logo you get this:

Re:90% reduction
"You like to buy and sell on a timeframe of weeks?"
Make that milliseconds.
When they say "high frequency trading" they really do mean mean "high frequency".

Re:Only...
People think that fear is respect and thus think that the one instilling most fear has to be respected most
Whenever I hear the phrase "I demand respect", I imagine some low-key hooded figure yelling it to his victim at gunpoint. It always confuses me. If not for the seriousness of the situation, I'd expect someone to reply "if you want my respect, then throw away your gun and we'll talk".
Maybe a new generation of wisdom tiles should be created? Obedience is not respect. Disagreeing is not disrespecting. Being feared is not being revered. Inspiration is not intimidation. Being encouraging is not being forceful. Respect, like trust, must be earned. Common courtesy can earn you respect. Being upfront can earn you trust.
To get back on-topic, it's no different around here (Netherlands). We have a secondary school culture where underperforming is considered "cool". My sister doubled a year because of it (she's a sucker for peer pressure), got redirected to a less demanding track, and lost another year to get back on her original track. Now, she has already been turned down for a higher (performing arts) education twice because she's considered "too old".
As for another anecdote, over the christmas period we were watching the finals of the National Science Quiz. After a tie in the final round, the contestants were given an approximation question (give the diameter of the moon). The eventual winner used incidental knowledge (distance to the moon and diameter of the moon in arcseconds) to calculate the answer on the spot and was less than 10% off. My brother-in-law gave a reaction like "that's pathetic". It really took a lot of self-restraint not to throw him out of the window.

Re:Twitter etc...
Comparatively cheap these days. Scripts for micro-blogging, standard blogging, etc? Freely available. Not just being another hype-follower? Priceless.
So why are you here on "trendy" Slashdot like the rest of us? Surely you're better off building your own site to post your opinions to, instead of following the hype, right?
I suspect their are arguments like "because people use it" and "because people know it" and "because people don't need to make separate registrations". All it means is that you get buried in junk instead, or force people who wouldn't otherwise bother with an account on one of these "trendy" services to get an account just to comment (while avoiding the rest of the spam).
But if you can be bothered to even RTFS, they do have a website ( http://beagle.vpro.nl/#/page/item/12/english/ ), for those people who don't want to sign up to Facebook or Twitter, etc. Those things are provided in addition, for the convencience of people who are on those sites.

Re:Twitter etc...
Actually they did. and quite exentsive with that. But as its a Dutch/Belgium cooperation, the site is mostly in Dutch. http://beagle.vpro.nl/ But there is a section in English (and in Spanish and in Portuges) http://beagle.vpro.nl/#/page/item/12/english/

Re:As dangerous as it is usefulSaw that on TV, years ago.
Do you mean like Temporal lobe tickling and spirituality TV program (in Dutch)?
The reporter was quite impressed, I remember that. But he did'nt feel it as a spiritual experience.
I have no idea if what you propose is possible: maybe, people's brains are wired sufficiently differently to make this "implanting a thought pattern" very difficult, unless it's a very crude pattern. Plus, the "please put on this special motorcycle helmet" would give the plan away

MMBase is far from weak
Have a look at the web sites of the united Dutch public broadcast companies, the web site of the public broadcast company, named VPRO, one of the founders of MMBase, or the extensive VPRO 3voor12 pop music website. Enjoy public radio and television on the web. And then decide whether MMBase is weak or not.

Seen this in July
I was introduced to vodcasting by this feed by 3voor12 in early July this year (press release in english and a dutch article). It's contents is basicly short impresions and interviews (mostly in dutch) with various artists. This is just another of many services by 3voor12, the progressive digital culture department of dutch public broadcaster VPRO. They have loads of free high quality on demand and live streaming content like music radioshows, concerts and much more. They use the services of VODcast.nl (in english) by the company JetStream.
Breakthrough of the year? No, but will any rss spinoff every be? It still one of my personal top feeds. -

Re:From the 3D Interface Article:You are really mistaken. Homo Sapiens has evolved to endure - although that seems strange today. The German/American biologist Bernd Heinrich at the University of Vermont is also known as the Marathon Man.
In a book called Racing the Antelope (HarperCollins, 2001) Heinrich sets forth why the figure of homo sapiens is particulary well suited for long distance running. Quote: "He does so himself: for a long time he held the U.S. record at the 100 mile (160 kilometer), which took him 12 h 27 s."

A dutch news site:

On the left side you can see some photos and a family tree. The yellow spots are where the DNA samples fitted in the tree.

Dutch radio interviewFor the Dutch slashdotters; Jan Smit said something about it on the Dutch radio(it's about 10 minutes into the stream), where he basicly called everything said by Kellar bullocks("a lott of mud throwing" and "facts that are verifiably wrong").
He has one of the samples of this study was based on (and (acording to above mentioned radioshow) the who divided up the original). In the end of the radiointerview he sugests letting all the original drill samples be tested by a third party for magnesium or calcium to prove if what Kellar has found are actual organism or just cristaline structures (as Smit seem to think). Sounds good to me, but then IANAPaleontologist.

VPRO
Give VPRO in the Netherlands a try. They are a free thinking public broadcasting company, and a lot of their radio programs were DJs playing exactly that what they like, and to hell with any listeners statistics. They introduced me to a lot of music I would otherwise never have heard. Haven't been in Holland for a while so I don't know the situation now, but the music on their site is great.

Re:you don't know police states
I watched a two-part series about some very disturbing developments in the US police and justice system. They are availible online and although it's a Dutch program almost everything is spoken English so it's worth to watch for non-Dutchies

Sony and VPROIn The Netherlands we have a lot of public broadcast organizations. One of those, the VPRO, has a internet radio station where its radio broadcasts are available on demand. It's called Radio 3voor12 and it's pretty innovative for Dutch standards.
The thing is, recently Sony has asked the VPRO to refrain from putting music from its artists online. In response, the VPRO has banned Sony artists from all their TV and radio broadcasts! If you understand Dutch, check out: this article with RealAudio interview for more info.

Re:fuck sony
small sidenote on Sony: VPRO, a dutch radio and television organisation, has decided to no longer play any records from sony. Sony objected to their webcasts, so they're boycotting sony. I would point you to www.vpro.nl but it's in dutch. don't count on Babelfish either...
