List of things that can kill you in New York
Steam Explosion
Manhole Explosion
Crane collapse
Manhole electrocution
Light Pole electrocution
Then there are the construction and scaffolding deaths from stuff falling on peoples heads, not to mention getting hit by a taxi or bus or falling on the subway tracks. Watch your step! -
Re:Good thing we dont have Electric Cars yet
Example of high power broadcast transmitters surrounded by dead cars:

The good news is that they tow them a few blocks and it works again.

NYT Hypocrisy from the pay wall trench
I find it amazing these "journalists" (sic) have time to foist opinion about newfangled slang e-verbs folks have created out of the necessity of brevity, when there other problems in the world.
Like oh say, the possibility of doomsday in New York if the government shut's down.
It would be far more in the public interest if these "journalists" (sic) could start using words like
Broken Oath of office
Corruption
Bribes
Treason
Bankrupt Government
coupOf course it could simply a NYT ego dick measuring contest because not many folks go "NYT-ing" anymore. Gee I wonder why.

USA has effectively lost its AAA bond rating
Obama Pays More Than Buffett as U.S. Risks AAA Rating
And NY state can't pay for tax "refunds" (why is it called a "refund" - the government overcollected...).
And now, ObamaCare is going to kick in.
Oh, but you say it's "deficit neutral".
Yeah, only because it uses 10 years of taxes to pay for the first 6 years of benefits.
And what happens when the US Supreme Court rules that it's unconstitutional to FORCE people to buy health insurance? The whole "soak the young" will fall apart.
Althought I must admit, I kinda do hope they try soaking the young. It'd be one hell of an education in reality when a bunch of sheltered college "THOSE RETHUGLICANS ARE EVIL" twits graduate to a $45,000/year job but then have to fork over $12,000 of that for health insurance they DON'T WANT.
-
But don't worry, we can do health care!

Free speech is the most important freedom
As far as I can tell, the laws and public opinion about freedom of speech issues are dysfunctional.
I think, the belief is, we'd rather suffer through annoyances of some fools/assholes/weirdos saying stuff we don't like, than have the Government decide, what can and can not be said.
Also I'm absolutely convinced that corporate speech and political speech is more dangerous than hate speech. And the US has completely failed to deal with them... or for that matter even discuss them openly and honestly.
"Corporate speech" is advertising and is very restricted already — way too much, in this immigrant's opinion. They can't advertise cigarettes. They can't even tell you, their food is good for you!
As for political speech, well, that's what the First Amendment, actually, is about, even if it was misused in the past to claim the right to sell pornography. So hands off! I wish, I could shout that into the ears of Senators McCain and Feingold, when they were pushing their unconstitutional law...
Back to your statement, both political and corporate speech in the US has, in fact, been discussed and dealt with, so you are 100% wrong. Which is very unfortunate...

Re:I guess I should prepare for extinction then
I wouldn't trust my iPhone GPS for realtime directions when I'm traveling 50 miles per hour. The iPhone's GPS can't deliver updates fast enough to make quick decisions. Sure, it will sometimes, but all it takes is one delayed direction in 10 million to cause an accident.
As the GPS doesn't actually drive the vehicle, this seems like a non-issue to me.
If someone is stupid enough to be watching the GPS instead of the road and other vehicles around them, the best GPS in the world won't prevent the accident that will inevitably follow. (And yes, it actually happens)
-
Re:Road signs
Or a news article where a gps unit tries to kill people?

And the answer is...
Wait until the molting season when the geese can not fly, trap them all and gas them.

Re:Oh Yes... The Puritans...
Yeah, because Obama belonging to a Puritan church would be seen as a bad thing to conservatives.
Really, it's true, look it up. The church directly descends from the Puritans, which might explain the "God damn America" quote from Wright.
The point is simple: you can't just blame this on Republicans. The Puritans are alive and well in the US, on both sides of the isle.
Which is really rather scary and sad at the same time. The "liberal" party in the US literally contains people who belong to the modern-day Puritan church.
Anyway, if you want a link to the IRS investigation, here you go. And for the Puritan heritage, straight from the church itself.
Really, these aren't conservative talking points, since if anything, I'd think Obama being connected to Puritanism would be point in support of him from conservatives, but it's a fact that liberals and conservatives alike ignore.

Re:Imagine
~10 Muslims were arrested for terrorist plots in the US.
Check this out: http://wcbstv.com/topstories/Terrorism.New.York.2.244858.html
There are way more than 10 arrests.
Now no offense, but the things you listed aren't major attacks. An event like Matthew Shepard's murder is tragic, but it's just one person. My list includes attacks that would affect many people at once, like blowing up planes, bridges, building dirty bombs, etc. That's what I had in mind. Timothy McVeigh is a terrorist, but someone who kills one abortion doctor... that's kind of a stretch to me.
If you want to talk about lower-level stuff, there's plenty of incidents that aren't on that list. For instance, remember the DC sniper? Would you count each killing as a terrorist attack?

No useful information? Say what?
The administration got absolutely no useful information as a result: they got a series a bogus leads that all turned out to be wild goose chases. And now that the use of torture is known there is no prospect of getting any criminal convictions in a real court of law.
George Tenet has said that the enhanced interrogation techniques ("torture" for those who are "nuanced" on the left that apparently claim moral equivalence between waterboarding and Saddam's cutting out of tongues, raping children in from of parents, and chopping off fingers) gathered more intelligence than all other intel programs combined. Now, you can say Tenet is a liar, but I'd like to hear who your source is on this, other than an anonymous, anti-Bush source in the CIA who doesn't have the balls to ID himself.
Tenet says the interrogations uncovered networks and broke up plots in the U.S.. - Note on this interview - For some astonishing reason, 60 Minutes edited it and removed the part where Tenet claims EIT gathered more intelligence than all other programs combined. Here's the part 60 Minutes cut, but CBS's affiliate did not:
"Here's what I would say to you, to the Congress, to the American people, to the president of the United States: I know that this program has saved lives. I know we've disrupted plots," he tells Pelley. "I know this program alone is worth more than the FBI, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency put together, have been able to tell us." -
Re:Excessive?
Marijuana is not a schedule 1 drug, and it's not a felony to smoke it.
Sorry, but you're wrong. Marijuana is a schedule 1 drug according to the DEA: http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/scheduling.html . Perhaps you meant to say that it's utterly absurd that a drug like marijuana is in the worst schedule of drugs, despite the fact that marijuana is less addictive than alcohol, and has caused zero confirmed deaths since the dawn of history, compared to thousands of fatalities per year for aspirin overdoses. http://www.drugwarfacts.org/causes.htm
But you're right, smoking isn't a felony. Smoking usually requires possession, though, which is a misdemeanor or felony depending both on the amount and on the presence or absence of an elusive quality called "intent to distribute". Sadly, police officers have been caught planting this evidence on innocent people:

Re:It's not tortureAlso, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a case where the officer doesn't first say, "Settle down or you are going to be tased." Often this warning is issued repeatedly before action is taken. Like the time a cop didn't like a guy sitting on a bicycle asking questions?
Also, even if they issue a warning, is it still justified to tase a suspect if they literally sit unmoving after the warning? (Such as the multiple instances of tasering people who were in comas or in shock at the time?)
What if you had four officers on top of a person who had already been overpowered by just one of the officers alone? -
Recent developments regarding Abraham Lincoln
articles like "Abraham Lincoln" won't need much maintenance anyway
He just died last year! -
The police don't like public evidence. With the advent of the cell phone cam, have you noticed the ever increasing number of police brutality videos? When a cop is caught breaking the law, do the other police officers maintain their vow to uphold the law or do they react like thugs in a turf war? This is a fundamental problem if we are truely a nation of free men who consent to being governed for the common good. If we are just a oligarchy with a happy facade then it's just the truth showing through.
"It's critical that we retain the right to record, videotape or photograph the police while they're on duty. Not only for symbolic reasons (when agents of the state can confiscate evidence of their own wrongdoing, you're treading on seriously perilous ground), but as an important check on police excesses."http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,284075,00.html

Re:It is their DUTY to kill US soldiers
Few of those attacking US soldiers in Iraq are from Iraq. The Iraqis are too busy killing themselves over religious issues. If you want to know who's targeting our soldiers, you need look no farther than Iran. They are doing everything they can to bog us down in Iraq because they know they're next in line. Before we even went into Iraq, Iran threatened the use of suicide bombers openly. http://abcnews.go.com/International/story?id=1850897 http://wcbstv.com/topstories/Iran.suicide.bombers.2.268156.html

Nothing to read here ...
I'm not sure why this story was filed under "privacy" rather than "technology". Nobody's freaked out by police helicopters, whether they are used to find traffic offenders, in police chases, or as observation posts for police raids. Using unmanned aircraft instead is a no-brainer. They are cheaper to operate, can stay up longer, and people don't die when they collide (though this incident was with civillian helicopters).

But Grandma likes Bingo
She's 78 and enjoying her first computer ever, an iBook... How long until her interest in Bingo and other games makes her a felon?
But I suppose online gambling lacks the thrill of a potential strip search and 2.5 hours of detention over an $80 win....

Not just Ohio
Technology seemed similar to a local story I had read recently. It is already in use in Long Island, NY suburbs

Re:i love thisIllegal wiretaps for cameramen? I can recall nothing of that nature. You haven't been paying attention, it was on slashdot a few days ago:
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/06/29/188 221&tid=172
Quote: "A city man is charged with violating state wiretap laws by recording a detective on his home security camera"
Quick searching turned up a few other cases:

Quote: "Before releasing Lee, the police allegedly told him he needed a permit to photograph on New York City streets."

Quote: "Cruz said police told him that he broke a new law that prohibits people from taking pictures of police with cell phones." -
No one's mentioned Michael Warren yet...
Don't feel safer just yet, Mr. parent post. Last night in Crown Heights (Brooklyn), a civil rights attorney (Michael Tarrif Warren) and his wife Evelyn (also a civil rights attorney I believe) witnessed a police officer making an arrest. He stopped to observe the arrest and was told by an officer to, "Get the fuck out of here, this is none of your business." Michael replied, "You don't have to talk to me that way sir, I'm a lawyer." He was told, "I don't give a fuck who you are." and walked away. Michael proceeded to take notes while in his car - at this point the sergeant (one Sgt. Talby of the 77th Precinct, NYPD) punched him several times hard through the open window and arrested both Mr. Warren and his wife.
Thankfully, the news got to the local media quickly, and when they broadcast news of the arrest, 200 folks showed up at the 77th Precinct's door (full disclosure: I was one of them). Sadly, this is hardly an isolated instance. It just happens to be the one that happened yesterday.
I realize that some of the sources I'm linking aren't exactly bastions of objective journalism, but if you'd like the other side of the issue, you have two choices:
1) Read the recommendations of NYPD officers on NYPD Rant, the largest message board for NYPD officers. In response to St. Louis ACLU handing out cameras to monitor police misconduct, many recommend "disappearing" the tapes or refusing to work in the area (see here
2) Next time you see police arresting or ticketing someone, pull out a notepad. Make sure to not interfere in any way with the police action - just take down names, badge numbers, police car numbers, and physical description of the arrestee. See what happens. I tried doing this once or twice in NYC, and was told, like Mr. Warren, that it was none of my business, to get lost. -
