Re:Meanwhile, in Canada
Windows Phone 2nd largest market is Brazil,
And still, no Portuguese support on Cortana until next year. Compare this to the kind of language support you have on Google Now, and how they can mine all kinds of local content because their Bots can understand something other than English.
I guess Microsoft thinks it can compete with Google by leveraging their services with the Windows Desktop. Take Outlook.com for example, a functional but boring webmail... Want a "better" mail experience? Then buy an Office subscription to use Outlook... Meanwhile Google has Gmail, with tons of features, and Inbox that offers you an innovative take on managing email, no desktop client required, and I can use it both on a Mac and Linux.
The computer desktop is loosing relevance year after year, and it's dragging Microsoft along with it.

Re:My thoughts.
Then you could sit tight waiting on a patch for your existing browser
That patch he was waiting for? it was pushed yesterday
... FYI.If he followed your advice, he would have spent more time creating, testing, and implementing the scripts/GPO's you suggested, than it took to get the patch. Plus he'd get to have all the fun of hearing from the Help Desk about users who're confused by a different browser appearance, and oh, hey, where'd all of my favourites go?
Not to mention, if the enterprise also uses GPO's to manage browser functionality / appearance / behaviour, woops, none of that on Chrome/Safari/Firefox...
If he did ANYTHING, on Monday, he could have pushed EMET to his Windows Vista/7/8.x clients, thereby hardening all of them against not only this attack, but also most others going forward; IE11 with EMET has YET to be compromised and was the ONLY browser configuration that came out of PWN2OWN undefeated; (FWIW: If you think that's just from weak-efforts, and manage to find a way to defeat it, there's a $150,000 reward available...)

Re:It'll be fun to watch.
Well, except that it isn't a steaming pile. It is a solid service. Why would you say it isn't - besides what must be some insane Microsoft hating?
Well, their decision to monitor your files, even private ones, is beyond obnoxious.
http://wmpoweruser.com/microso...
I certainly don't need Microsoft snooping around in my files, and potentially revoking not only skydrive (onedrive?) access but locking me out of a bunch of other stuff simply because something in some private file triggered some filter.
-
Re:skydrive/M$ drive is still relevant ?
Because M$ reads your contents and delete your entire account if they find e.g. family pictures, manga, something which is copyrighted by anyone else, or anything which annoy Microsoft in any possible way. http://wmpoweruser.com/watch-w...
-
Re: It'll be fun to watch.
There should be a Drive before Drive 360. And let's not forget Drive 3.11, Drive 95 and Drive XP and ME, and then Drive 7 and 8, which all serve the same purpose. And Drive 2012 Enterprise to make the confusion complete.
At least Microsoft will keep an eye (+ hundreds of NSA's eyes) on what you store there, and delete your account if they don't like it. http://wmpoweruser.com/watch-w...

Re:So long
Well here you see the job creators rewarded for making things better than they might have been. They could have adopted Windows Phone.
Actually that would have been a better choice, for example in the UK Windows Phone is quite popular and in Australia too, significantly moreso than Blackberry. It does lack the app catalog of its larger competitors though it has pretty much all the major ones and as far as the software and hardware quality goes it is very good, it just needs that killer disruptive feature to really gain market share, though that isn't to say that it necessarily needs huge market share to be successful.

Re:Hardware and Services
Not directly.. that'd be too obvious.
Probably Intellectual Vultures will buy up Vringo and Pendrell Corporation and then begin suing everybody. -
Re:No one will buy it because of the OS.
You are lying. As usual you paid Google shills are just making up stuff as you go along. Sadly for you, Google doesn't pay you shills in anything but hit ranking, which is worthless when you are.

Re:Media
t doesn't matter how good your company is or what your corporate charter's stated mission is, you're still portrayed as a Big Evil Company that's out to greedily gather money and decimate your adversaries
Because they're are usually a Big Evil Company and the mission is just PR bullshit.
Example?
Lets take Google.
Google's mission from: http://www.google.com/about/
"Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful."
And Google does things like this:
http://www.businessinsider.com/google-admits-it-was-blocking-wp8-maps-2013-1
Is it the press' fault that they need to cover this up by putting it on page 12 and concentrate on Google's clean image in the front page?
-
Re:I can't wait to see this battle
It's a publicly accessible website that anyone with a decent browser can access. So yes, it's part of the open web. Closing it off by not providing an API is a dick move by Google, but it's not like they're detecting particular browsers and then blocking access.
Not for lack of trying.
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/01/google-maps-windows-phone-and-an-avoidable-mess/
http://wmpoweruser.com/now-google-is-blocking-windows-phones-from-accessing-maps-google-com/Whoops. "Open Web", indeed.

Re:Wait... what?
First, if the numbers were any good, Google would be bragging about them instead of hiding them. That shows how badly they're selling. Because of this, we have to use the numbers we can get. If you have any better metric, let me know.
Second, if you hadn't failed reading comprehension, it says right there in the summary that the 5000 figure is from 2011 from the first six months of selling them.
Also, the Nokia Windows Phones were bestsellers on Amazon, so you're arguing that they sold really well?

Re: Fuck off
Depends on whether you see any analysts talking about a high level of unsold inventory, I don't see any evidence of too much channel stuffing happening.
The Lumia 520 sold out in less than half hour on Walmart.com.
http://www.neowin.net/news/lumia-521-sells-out-again-at-hsn-walmart
Sold out on India's Amazon equivalent flipcart too, in fact it's out of stock since a month because of the heavy demand.

Find me some in the google play store.
It doesn't seem hard to find.

http://wmpoweruser.com/trend-micro-one-in-ten-google-play-store-apps-is-malware/
Oh, and of course not all app types are available from Google Play Store are they? Where are the ad-blockers for example?
Stop trolling, and educate yourself.
It's you that headed down this path. I merely pointed out that your comment about the user always being the flaw which would always let malware in did not apply to iOS or consoles. Rather than just accept that iOS has that advantage, you wandered off into ever more unrealistic scenarios of how iOS could get malware. And then, when Android's malware problem is pointed out you flip the opposite way, and try to minimise that.
Accept that both platforms have pros and cons. And that people quite rationally make different decisions. Your opinion is just opinion, it's not generic wisdom.

Re:Petittion of the Living Dead
A Microsoft sponsored petition had 115,000 signatures! That's probably more people than are using Windows 8.
Of course, we should double check and make sure all of those signatures belong to actual living people, and not dead people. MS has a history of fake grass roots campaigns involving dead people. You should all listen to your international corporate overlords and be outraged at being scroogled, but ignore the fact that Microsoft reserves the right to examine all of the data on your sky drive.
It shouldn't suprise us that Microsoft products are so popular among the dead. After all, Balmer is one of the most brain-dead CEO's in the tech world. They used to be such a scrappy competitive company. Then the 1990's happened.
Asking Google to stop rifling through their e-mail is a perfectly reasonalbe request, as long as the people making that request understand that they will then either have to pay a subscription fee or that they will be told by Google to go someplace else where that feature is on offer. GMail is free because Google can rifle through your mail, harvest your personal data and sell it in an anonymized form (or so they claim) to advertisers. You either get an e-mail service where you can pay for privacy or you sacrifice your privacy to get e-mail for free. You can't have your cake and eat it too. There is no such thing as free lunch, even freetards pay a price for 'free stuff' it just isn't always money. It's amazing how hard it is for some people to understand that (general observation, not accusing number6x personally).

Re:Excel vs Spreadsheet
Amazon bestsellers don't mean very much in terms to total units.
The Nokia Lumia has been on top of bestseller phones for long periods of time.

ActiveSync and Calendars
Apparently if you update a calendar item on your iOS device, it tries to update Exchange and fails.
It then retries continuously, chewing through battery life and log files: http://wmpoweruser.com/exchange-server-acting-up-blame-those-ios-6-1-users-then-ban-them/.

http://wmpoweruser.com/intel-android-dual-core-so-poor-having-a-second-core-is-actually-a-detriment/
Can't find it now but there was one hands on demo video that showed a Samsung Android dual or quad core phone lagging while scrolling through photos while a single core Windows Phone zips through them like butter.
Hope you can do your own research instead of getting trapped in the anti-MS news bubble and circlejerk of hate and hence becoming ignorant as a result.

Re:Windows Phone 8
Yeah about that. Turns out building a platform for freeloaders and pirates isn't such a good idea. This was a year and a half ago. I imagine it wouldn't even be close now.

Re:Osbourne Effect
I mean, what the fuck was the point of that?
Remember, even in a private company, the CEO doesn't have full decision power. The board can effectively overrule him and he can't get rid of the people under him or fully control them without the board's support. A number of those people probably looked at Microsoft's history in mobile (Microsoft's market share has continually declined overall in mobile having previously been in double digits) and foresaw disaster.
Elop was setting out to destroy the power base of people who might try to push for backup second strategies. In doing that he was trying to force any sane members left on the board over to his side. I'd say he was successful in that. There seem to be two explanations going around for why he wanted to do that 1) he was crazy and believed that only complete commitment to Windows could save the company 2) he actively and deliberately wanted to destroy Nokia. As I see him killing off further products which could have bought him time and money (N9 / Meltimi) I get more and more convinced of 2).

Won't support low end Tango devices
Even though it's owned by Microsoft, Skype won't support low end Windows Phone Tango devices as it “requires a minimum of 512MB of memory to install and use Skype”, and doesn't yet have support for receiving calls in the background -- if the app isn't running.

Re:There is a huge positive bias
You the perfect example of error, you talk about microsoft implementing HTML5 perfectly while ignoring the fact that chrome, firefox, safari have implemented broken draft specification's of HTML5. It turns out that sites are breaking in IE because they are non-standard, but the same sites are "working" in other browsers. http://wmpoweruser.com/twitter-fix-mobile-twitter-css-bug-for-windows-phone/

Re:The Most Secure Mobile OS
The only current smartphone OS that is safe against exploits and vulnerabilities is Windows Phone 7.
Because nobody has bothered? Or perhaps because your bold claim just is not true?

Re:So much for backward compatibility, huh?
>Or forward. Or sideways. WP8 won't be binary compatible with WinCE-based WP7 (which itself wasn't compatible with WinCE-based WM6), nor with desktop Windows 8, nor with, apparently, any other OS that's ever existed. Sure hope they make it real easy for developers to build their existing code for WP8.
WP7 apps will run on WP8.

Re:Nokia Lumia
Actually, Lumia is performing really well in Europe and Australia. In November it was on top of sales charts of Sweden and Australia
Then you supplied the wrong link - try linking to a site with a stock level of more than 2 digits. Actual figures (not plucked out of your arse) might be a little hard to come by - but if you checked you facts you'd know that. Hint: which major outlets don't have it available until next month? If you said "all of them" you'd be right!
Perhaps your confusing it with the N9 which sold a few thousand (because it's PenTile is crap) but it doesn't run WP7 - the only person I've heard of that owns one got it given to him by his employer (MS) and it's not something he boasts about (nice phone Damian - got that javascript to render yet?)

Re:Nokia Lumia
With Lumia falling flat in Europe Microsoft needs all the enthusiastic modding fans they can get.
Actually, Lumia is performing really well in Europe and Australia. In November it was on top of sales charts of Sweden and Australia and in December in United Kingdom, beating both Android devices and iPhone. Nokia and Microsoft did really well in Europe.
Actually, you're low life Microsoft Troll that lives in a basement who makes up shit about sales to prop up a POS product like WP7. The Lumina was a failure just like all other Windows Phones before it. Spin that you chimp.
