Re:This lawsuit cannot be allowed
The smashing, violence, and beatings is overwhelmingly coming from the left. That's how it's been for many years.
I have to agree.
So you feel obligated to agree with a falsehood? Interesting. Why not challenge it? Why not consider how the FBI's report on right-wing violence was suppressed?
My personal theory is that many of the violent people have convinced themselves that their political enemies are in fact bad people and "fair game" for anything.
Yes, the right goes out of its way to declare that people on the left are, in fact, bad people, and see themselves as the martyred heroes for saving themselves from the dastardly villains. That was, in fact, the whole justification of Nazi aggression.
Ever so slightly interesting that you don't mention it.
But it's hardly unknown, it's even in this movie trailer.
It goes like this: It's okay to punch a Nazi; conservatives are all Nazis... and then comes the punching.
Actually, it's conservatives who go to tortuous lengths to declare that liberals are Nazis. It's terribly amusing, and rather pathetic. Not to mention the Muslim accusations, the Communist accusations, and more.
Of course, it turns out the people dumb enough to sell out to the Russians were Trumps, but we can't be paying attention to that.
Here is a web page linking multiple articles arguing that the violence used to prevent Milo Yiannopolous from speaking at Berkeley was justified. "Violence helped ensure safety of students" is a real headline. There was also this quote: "...some white nationalists got their ***** beat." (Just like the Nazi thing above, only this time using "white nationalist". Someone who wanted to hear Milo speak --> white nationalist --> someone it's okay to send to the hospital.)
Here's a video of those white Nationalists's major work:
http://www.pbs.org/video/2365957904/
Do see how they're behaving and justifying themselves.
Even the removal of statues leads to threats of violence.
Some people can't even worship in peace.
Yet you show not the slightest concern about that.
Also, the media coverage may tend to embolden these people. The people who smash things, light things on fire, and send people to the hospital are described as "protesters". The people who wanted to hear Milo speak are described as "alt-Right extremists". I don't want to overstate the contribution of the media but I think it's a part.
The media coverage of the feigned victimization of right-wing speakers was indeed a part, people actually started to believe it was a real problem, or some sudden development, until it petered out, as comments by Milo that even the right-wing couldn't stomach came out, and he, the poster-child for the supposed martydom, became a persona non-grata. So it petered out.
Personally I think that the correct remedy for bad speech is counter-speech.
So not walking away? Not ignoring them? You don't say they're unacceptable, but why not correct?
But ok, enjoy my speech.
Violence isn't acceptable to prevent speech, even if you really disagree.
So is h

Re:Of Course
Breitbart is a media site with numerous articles by numerous reporters with numerous slants. Claims like "alt-right" have become tools of silencing people with a different agenda than the primarily Liberal/Leftist/Progressive MSM is what they see as a threat. This article is linked on Breitbart, which MSM originally reported on the "Hate Crime" but not so much on the finding of false accusation. It did not fit their agenda but does fit a Republican, and quite frankly should be "news" for everyone.
False accusations abound against Republicans, Trump supporters, and white males. You can find at least 2 other cases which were reported by MSM as hate crimes and anti-Trump supporters which where the original claimant is being charged with falsifying a police report. One for a robbery which never occurred, and another for a beating which never occurred. Meanwhile, there are actual murders and beatings of Trump supporters which MSM happens to ignore.
Hate speech is being used as a broad way of stifling dissent, and people really should be appalled.

Re:Mod parent up
If you want to see an example of America's two tiered justice system ask any dirt poor man in jail for pot possession why he didn't get diverted to drug treatment like a pop star or even an attorney's son.
Got a citation for this claim? I know it's repeated often, but in the real world the system will go to ridiculous lengths to keep people out of jail. The nice young men that committed this particularly heinous crime had already been arrested in 2012, for B&E, and they got PROBATION. Neither one came from money or received any special treatment in the 2012 case -- at least from what's been reported to date -- the system gave them a second chance and they graduated to murder.
That's just one example, which pops into my mind because it just happened. Point being, you don't go to jail for mere possession of weed, even in the strict States. I challenge you to find one person that's behind bars for simple possession, without other factors at play, like an existing criminal record or the commission of other crimes while they possessed weed.

Re:One small problem
Um, no they can't. Not legally, anyway. And that's all the more reason to film the hell out of them. Case in point:

Yeah, you may get taken for a ride, but the only way you'll have a chance to beat it and hopefully have their badges later is if you have some video evidence.

Re:My truck ...
In most jurisdictions, police officer can legally pull you over and ask you to clean it and probably fine you as there are laws against driving with an obscured license plate.

Re:chicken little
I see many problems.
The important thing is not just oil, but cheap oil. This specific article is about exploiting the less available fields, which is expensive, complicated, and more polluting than the easy to access wells.
And of course, as can be seen with BP the industry will do anything they can to weasel out of paying for the damage.

best judges money can buy
Ironic that they call it free speech when it was bought and paid for by the drug companies. SCOTUS also ruled this week that makers of generic drugs cannot be sued, even in cases where there was a known problem they did nothing about[1]. They also upheld a limit on medical malpractice damages set by a West Virginia law[2]. See a pattern here?

Re:Where's The Money From?
Fear earns nothing but violence and destruction. Fear and violence are the acts of despots determined to keep what is not theirs.
The Borgia crime family - one of the greatest mafiosa gangs in history - presided over the Enlightenment and largely caused most of it. True, there was a lot of fear, but centralized justice and peace on Earth there wasn't.
Scotland and the outlying islands achieved a murder rate average of 0.00000045 per thousand people per year over its first four millenia of occupation. It also had very very little scientific or technical development (well, ok, they invented the stone circle, the method of raising monoliths, and for some reason apartment complexes, but not a whole lot else).
And these guys don't seem too afraid of central justice. Oh, and the ATF being busted for smuggling guns into Mexico for 6-10 years? Yeah, right, those're the guys I'd trust to defend my freedom. Not.
Cambridge University, one of the leading institutions in the world for scientific research, is one of the most left-wing and has some of the greatest protections against retribution and indeed any kind of central justice system. It was even founded by criminals. Many top US universities for science could say the same, except for perhaps the being founded by criminals bit.
The US military recently admitted death-squads in Afghanistan went out killing civilians for fun. C'mon, the "one rotten apple" gets old after the first few hundred.
Freedom from getting stabbed by my neighbor? How about freedom from shoot-outs over where the dog chose to go? Besides, the US has a higher murder rate than almost any other country in the world.
It also has the highest infant mortality rate in the Western world, a preventable death rate double that of the next-highest Western nation, one of the poorest ratings in education and basic literacy, a low rating in overall happiness, the highest rate of incarceration outside of China, an execution rate comparable to North Korea, and a military budget in excess of the rest of the top ten combined. So I'm not seeing a whole lot of this freedom that all this money is supposedly buying.
Well, outside of Wachovia bank that is. They seem to have bought a whole lot of freedom, albeit at the cost of a Mexican civil war and a few hundred thousand lives.
The Victorians once believed as you did. Earned them a crime wave. Then they discarded retribution and threats for moderation and civility, resulting in a rebirth of British democracy.

Re:Dumb people ruin it for everyone
This has already been covered, but it is easy to get large amounts of chemicals without the MSDS and by paying cash. Then you are free to put them in your car and take them where ever you please.I bet you can find oxidizers next to organics on every cleaning aisle in the world! Education and freedom is the answer here, lack of education and criminalization will only lead to things like this: http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/wwl042908tpmethexplode.b13959fe.html

Re:Why get so fancy?
I don't think you know much about what happened, or even been near a modern rail system.
I'd have to agree. If the train tracks south of my house that I cross going to work were laid after the 40's I'd be surprised.
First of all, the bombs were in backpacks, left inside the trains. The rails had absolutely nothing to do with it.
Isn't this agreeing with my statement: 'Realistically speaking, they could have done the same thing in a crowded mall for the same effect.'?
What I'm worried about is terrorists doing something to derail a 300mph train, as if they manage it they'd probably kill just about everybody aboard. No, they probably won't be able to run it into an important building, but a crowded train with 90% fatalities would be bad enough.
Second, nobody "wanders" in front of a train and gets smeared.
Sure about that?
They do it trying to beat the train(often driving around barriers to do it), make a wrong turn, sleep on the tracks, commit suicide(it's so bad that in Japan the train company charges the family clean up costs), etc...
We don't live inside a Roadrunner cartoon, tracks are very obvious and at least in populated places have barriers around them. You don't exactly end up on one by accident.
I must have never lived in a crowded enough area. Even when I lived in moderately sized cities I could walk over many active train tracks. I also have pretty high faith in drunks being able to darwin themselves in elaborate fashions. -
Re:In Soviet America...
Thank you for that fascinating string of ad hominems, misinterpretations of both my statements and motives, and uncited factually incorrect assertions. That is certainly a wonderful way to bring up the level of discourse and help others whom you believe misunderstand the situation to come to a better understanding.
As I am in a generous mood, I will go ahead and let you know the thing you desperately need to know:
No matter how earnest or angry you are, citing links to specific non-partisan sources to back up your assertions is much more persuasive than writing things you wished were true punctuated with bits of all caps ranting and using lots of exclamation points.
Here is an example. I have a position. FEMA and the White House screwed up royally in this crisis. Besides the obvious top level things like Bush staying on vacation through the disaster and for days afterwards, besides Condi Rice going on vacation after the crisis started, besides Dick Cheney staying on vacation for a week after the hurricane hit, Mike Brown screwing up so badly he was fired, etc., how else have they screwed up since the disaster started? Take a look at the evidence:
Some have denied that FEMA was responsible, or wasn't called in until after the disaster hit. This is false:

Re:Belleweather - MOD PARENT UP...
How about a comparison between Bush watching the National Guard and military take a WEEK to trickle into New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf, and his swift action authorizing the National Guard and military to mount yet another assault in Iraq? Where he announced the "end of major combat operations" two years ago.
How about a comparison of the despair of New Orleanians with the smirking fratboy showing up for his 1 minute photo-op in an airport miles from the city:
"I believe that the great city of New Orleans will rise again and be a greater city of New Orleans. (Applause.) I believe the town where I used to come from, Houston, Texas, to enjoy myself -- occasionally too much -- (laughter) -- will be that very same town, that it will be a better place to come to."
Ask New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin to compare Bush's priorities.
How about a comparison between Bush's America in 2006, 2007, 2008, when disaster #3, "Giant California Earthquake" hits, and OUR America, after he's impeached, resigned, any way to get this miserable failure out of the critical path of administering our country?
We need to demand that the government mobilize the Homeland Security we've spent $BILLIONS on, sacrificed our rights for, to protect us, mobilize it INSTANTLY. We need to send help, money and time, to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, to save these people from the government that let them down, that abandoned our people when we needed it. We need to fire every one of our representatives in the House of Representatives next year, in November 2006, when they're all up for reelection, and the Senate - where 1/3 is up for reelection, if they did not do what they could to fight the neglect and demented failure to plan and assist the mitigation of this total disaster. After the criminals who built this house of cards now collapsed in New Orleans are fired, we need them to prosecute the impeachment of Bush, Cheney (where the hell is he, anyway?), Homeland Security's Chertoff, FEMA's Michael Brown, Army Corps of Engineers' boss Rumsfeld, Grand Inquisitor Gonzales, and the rest of the gang of preoccupied thugs. The worst of them deserve jail, even the traitor's noose. As for Bush himself, only suicide by slow torture could begin to approximate "justice" for his crimes. But getting him and his dynasty out of control is absolutely the least that could possibly be adequate. -

Welcome to the United States
Where public safety is contracted out to the lowest bidder.
Perhaps when coastal population centers occur blow sea level, safety measures should be over-engineered?
I'd hope that Underwatertown, Florida with an average hight of 20 feet below sea-level and a population over 500,000 located on the beach with a large tourism industry, would look at the worst case scenario and then be
prepared for something twice as bad
I'd want levees that could handle 50 feet of storm surge and 220 knot sustained winds without breaking a sweat.
I'd want independantly powered (or at least secure underground lines) forced drainage.
I'd want a magical pony that would drink all the water in the case that one of the levees broke.
I'd also not put a prison in a place where the inmates would be evacuated and held on an on-ramp -

The Internet is still working in NO...
http://www.wwltv.com/ (a New Orleans TV station) is webcasting live streaming video of their newsfeed, and http://www.somethingawful.com/ (a very large humor website & forum), which is hosted in downtown NO, is still operational. I guess that in this case the Internet is working as designed, and routing around damaged nodes (however I've heard the bandwidth in and out of NO is much lower than normal due to damaged/destroyed/inoperable routers, switches, cables, etc.).

safer, too.....
I forgot to add that this could make them safer, too. Right now cars that have high voltage systems (e.g. hybrid or electric cars) usually have separate electrical systems; a high voltage one for the drive train, and a low voltage one for the rest of the car.
This is works, but it can cause fires if the high voltage system comes in contact with the low voltage one. Fires and high voltage systems in cars can be very nasty. This complicates the job of resuing people from an accident or repairing the car afterwards.
