Re:Jesus, give it up with the DRM already!
I personally had problems because of DRM in HDMI. I wanted to use my PS3 with my fancy new HDMI monitor. No go because of copy protection. I had to pay extra money for a little device that would convert component cable output to VGA. So yeah, DRM cost me personally $70.
Extra annoying because I didn't want to "hack" anything. I just wanted to use the device I bought with the monitor I bought without having to pay for a new HD TV. -
Re:There's a patch involved
Patches for higher resolution don't sound so new... if you, for instance, plug a vga box into your xbox (e.g. x2vga) you will most probably have to patch by hand some executable (usually some default.xbe files) with an Hex editor in order to make a non negligible amount of games work in progressive scan. Your console must, of course, allow you to do that (he that hath ear to hear...). Basically such patches consist in changing the way the video mode is initializated (read this post for some further informations).
I suppose that the XB->XB360 patches do nothing but alter the calls of set video mode functions and add the initialization the anti aliasing stuff (which, as xbox doesn't perform any antialiasing, simply do not exist in the original game code). -
Re:Wrong, and wrong.
Well thanks for being the xbox police, but you do need a VGA monitor that can handle sync on green, and not all games or apps will work with the even more modified bios then usual.
Well thanks for being an arrogant fucktard, but you dont need a monitor that supports sync on green and pretty much every game supports it (480p in like every game but 2) -
Re:But it *is* a console game!
Hmmm, on the Xbox you can buy one of these to get your keyboard/mouse support back (I hated FPS games on consoles before I bought this thing) http://gear.ign.com/articles/558/558944p1.html as well as one of these and you will get your precious monitor back and be able to play games in HDTV resolution on your monitor. http://www.x2vga.com/ And you will be left with a pretty good and cheap gaming console that runs with KB/Mouse/Monitor

Re:xbox
does the xbox speak dvi, natively?
No, it does not. I assume this is due to pressure from the MPAA and the likes (the "digital output == perfect copy" argument?).
Google reveals at least one Xbox VGA adapter, though I have no idea if that supports HD or if you are locked to 640x480. -
Re:Halo 2 shipped with progressive scan bug.
I've been playing it with the excellent x2vga adaptor (http://x2vga.com) and I haven't seen any problems. I could try it on my actual HDTV, I guess, but that would take a lot of cable plugging and unplugging and I'm pretty lazy.

Re:Half-Life 2 owned again

Get this: http://www.x2vga.com/. It hooks your Xbox to your monitor, and does all the 420/1080/3270 transversioneering. It works great! -
Re:Why why why?
Really?
What res is 1080i HDTV?
Xbox can do that, provided you have a game which supports it, so to laugh at Xbox graphics is kinda silly by saying 'its only TV quality'.
You can even buy VGA convertors here that can do PROPER resolutions.
