Oh noo! Boohooo!! Youtube is becoming more like NBC and HBO, who also didn't give me an automatic yes to my "let me be the executive producer of a new tv show" idea that I pitched them.

No it's not. Music goes through several stages including recording, mixing, and it is finally "mastered" to sound best in the media in which it s going to be distributed. The ambiance of the media is only factored into the last stage of the production, well after recording is finished and some guy gets the job of making what sounded awesome at super expensive mixing desk, also sound as good as possible at some super shit boombox.

Now there is (some) overlap between a movie that is popular AND good, but there are at least 4 permutations you seem to be ignoring:

High / Good -- i.e. Baraka

We can ignore the High/Good (both > 90%) and Low/Crap (both < 40%) since in those cases it can generally be agreed upon that RT's score of popularity DOES equal quality. It is the two OTHER ones High/Crap, and Low/Good that demonstrate RT's score is based on popularity, not quality:

* High/Crap = movie might be over-rated
* Low/Good = movie might be under-rated

Beside, IMDB's Top 100 is a better correlation of good movies then RT. But again, this is still mostly a list of popular movies.

3. There is a HUGE disconnect between the RT's "Critics" and "Audience" score.

Spy Kids has a 93% from critics (WTF?!), yet only a 46% from the audience.

More crap like this can be seen with SW:TLJ, critics rate it 91%, yet the audience score is closer to 24% (**) -- ignoring the animated Clone Wars (2008), it is the LOWEST Star Wars film to date.

(**) RT currently shows the audience score as 47%, but this leads me to my next point.

My viewing history is very similar to yours, with my current viewing being mostly on YouTube. The content I used to watch as a kid on PBS, Discovery and TLC is now on YouTube. Over the years, I've built up a pretty extensive list of subscriptions that provide me with as much or more than I want to watch every day.

I use an Amazon FireTV (unlike some people, I have to have a physical remote control when I'm on the couch; I don't want to have to pick up my phone and screw with that to play, pause and choose the next thing to watch) and the Firefox browser at https://youtube.com/tv (somehow I didn't even know this existed until recently, but IMO it's a quite-functional, purpose-built interface) to scroll through the newest videos from my subscriptions. I make sure I subscribe to stuff I'm interested in. Every so often, I'll go back to the Recommended list and check out videos there. What I have found is that if I feed the system, it really does consistently: (a) provide me new content that is consistent with what I'm interested in and have been watching; (b) provide me with different content that actually has led me in new directions that are horizontally relevant to my interests; and, (c) follow short-term whims in watching that shift and turn much more quickly than long term patterns.

The obsession with analog audio stems from a gross misunderstanding of what digital audio is. People see digital sampling as a partial capture of the analog waveform, and thus conclude analog must be superior. Digital sampling is not a partial capture. It's an exact capture of the analog waveform within the frequency range (22 kHz in most cases - well beyond what most people can hear). The part that's not intuitively obvious which trips most people up is that if you take a digital sample of an analog waveform, there is only one possible analog waveform which passes through all those digital samples while not exceeding the frequency cutoff. So the digital sample ends up being a perfect reproduction of the analog waveform (within the frequency range of interest).

You can demonstrate this by taking an analog waveform, feeding it into a digital sampler, then converting that digital sample back into an analog waveform. The beginning and ending waveforms will be identical despite the latter one having been converted to digital and back to analog.

All the "warmth" and "richness" of analog audio is nothing more than distortion.
