Say you're working for a tool manufacturer and come up with an idea to save hundreds of hours per year (machines can cost thousands of dollars an hour to operate. You go to your boss who says it would never work. You manage to elevate it up the company, but everyone says either it wouldn't work or that nobody would buy it.

So you quit your job, mortgage the house, buy a thousands of dollars of tools, spend 6 months to develop your idea showing your idea does work, buy a spot in a trade show convention and then get noticed by customers who give you lots of money to develop your own tool. It's not big and doesn't do a lot, but it's a step in the process of dozens of stages and will save them millions/year. Former employer goes, hey that works, looks easy (it was very easy, but relied on a bit of developed freshman college physics), we can just copy it. Except you have the patent. It was all pretty obvious, nobody took the $70k to develop the idea.

I've worked in both environments - self taught academic/scientific programmers and formally trained (college degrees in computer science) professional programming teams. And each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Obviously the self taught programmers can have some very weird programming styles.

But the formally trained programmers have weaknesses, too. The key weakness is lack of domain knowledge. Usually good software will have a structure that closely matches the problem being solved. But if you don't really understand the problem being solved then it's hard to have a good structure. And there tends to be a lot of "cargo cult" programming. You'll get a formally trained programmer who is trying to write perfect code who was read that the body of a function/method should ideally be only a single line of code - so the code is this spaghetti of tiny little functions scattered in random places with no higher level structure. And the code reviews are more about pecking each other than improving the code quality:

The DNC/Clinton machine paid for the Steele Dossier which was used as justification for FISA warrant to spy on the opposition campaign.

It is almost certain that the FBI used the dossier to get FISA court warrants to spy on Trump associates, meaning it used the opposition research of the party in power to convince a court to let it spy on the candidate of the other party - likely without telling the court of the dossier's political link.

The truth is, once Flynn was caught speaking to the Russian ambassador and discussing a quid pro quo deal, tapping the Trump phone lines became a legal and responsible action for law enforcement to take.

I shot competitively for a few years and I was a member of the NRA to keep track of my progress. I didn't agree with them 100%, but I supported their defense of the 2nd amendment in principle - and on a number of their talking points - so I was fine with paying for membership. Then they started going in the direction of being a mouthpiece for the far right with shit like this.

There are many moderates and even *gasp* liberals who like guns! If my experience is an indication of the rest of the country's gun-owning-but-not-far-right population, the NRA is going to continue losing membership and support. In the last week or so I've noticed a surge in what could broadly be categorized as pro-inequality propaganda, not only on Slashdot but also on YouTube. Recently on Slashdot there have been a couple of articles suggesting that automation won't cause mass unemployment and will actually be beneficial to most of society. In the context of the current economic climate and known history, this is absurdly wrong.

First let's look at the industrial revolution, the supposed best-case scenario for automation which the people pooh-poohing these fears glowingly reminisce about. They're actually reminiscing about a fictionalized history of it. In reality, at least two generations died in grinding poverty caused by the industrial revolution. The generation that lost their jobs to automation mostly died believing they were right all along. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren got the new jobs automation produced. That's what we're being offered to look forward to.

Now let's look at what's different this time. Today's automation isn't yesterday's automation - it isn't just augmenting human labor with physical force and mechanically repeated actions like the automation of the past. AI is replacing knowledge work. The author of TFA is a horse looking at an early car and saying "this will be good for us, just like before."

Automation could be very good or very bad for society, depending on who benefits from the products of automated labor. In our new plutonomy, automation would be very bad for society in both the short and long term. We need to rework our economies so that autmation can benefit all of humanity as soon as possible, rather than letting whole generations starve as in the past, or creating an uberclass of hyper-rich space royalty among a world of slums as we're headed for now.

Three meters isn't really a problem, although it is a problem. What will really put a damper on your day is when you learn about the glaciers on the Eastern Antarctic coast. There's one of them that has the capacity, all by itself, to raise average surface sea level by 6 meters. (average of 6 meters means considerably more on the equator.) If the lip off that glacier melts and the fresh water runs under it, it's gone. And that's just ONE such glacier. We're more than fucked, because building a dyke to hold the sea away from a glacier is not something we know how to do yet, and not in the remote Antarctic either. Anyone got any great ideas?
