4) This isn't coming out of the blue. Tesla's internal builds already handle city driving (including Musk himself). You don't have to take their word on it - customer cars are already doing detections required for city-driving in shadow mode

LOL, a video and a proclamation and you are already convinced Tesla has completely solved autonomous city driving. Your words, Tesla can 'already handle city driving".

You are falling for the exact same thing that many already have, bold capability overstatements. Not only falling for it, but you are re-enforcing it.

Put aside your fandom for a minute and think critically.

The silly part is this:

Experts say Tesla's "full self-driving" feature is really a partial self-driving feature that handles minor driving tasks such as keeping pace with other cars on a highway and still requires diligent human oversight. To most autonomous vehicle experts, "full self-driving" means a car in which a person could safely fall asleep behind the wheel, and the steering wheel and pedals aren't even needed...

1) They're describing AP/EAP as a level 1-2 system. It's actually a level 3 system with Navigate on Autopilot (e.g. makes lane changes, takes exits, etc).

2) They're describing what's presently available, which is not FSD, as if that's what's being offered as FSD. Which is just ridiculous. What's currently being offered is AP/EAP, not FSD. Heck, they don't even run on the same computer. AP/EAP is HW2, FSD is HW3 (HW2 = GPU, HW3 = custom neural net chip, about 20x faster).

3) What was targeted for the end of this year has been clearly described, both by Musk in interviews, and in the description of the product: that the car can drive in all situations on its own, but you still need a human monitoring it (aka, level 4 autonomy), with an intent to eliminate the driver requirement as soon as is allowed thereafter (level 5 autonomy). The monitoring requirements will remain until regulators are satisfied that its safety record exceeds that of humans. Musk stated that he expects this to require 10 billion or so miles of data.

The OP compares one physical activity and one digital activity and suggests one might be illegal whilst the other is perfectly legal.

It might be worth taking a brief detour here and considering the way that society determines whether or not a particular activity is legal or illegal. This is a significant simplification, but in general terms we could summarize the core principle of illegality as being a range of activities which cause harm or damage to those disadvantaged by it.

If I steal from you, you are harmed. If I injure you, you are harmed. If I kill you; well, you get the point.

A big part of the apparent disparity between physically stalking someone [or, to simplify again, actions in meatspace] from the digital equivalent stems entirely from the fact that it is very difficult to evidence the harm being caused by digital stalking. That is not to say that digital stalking is harmless.

There are no end of ways that the unregulated actions of private companies such as Facebook and Google can harm you as a private citizen.

With no regulation of what data is collected, how it is analyzed, or who it is sold to, the opportunities for that data to harm you are diverse and significant. You may be unsuccessful in securing your next job if you are blacklisted by recruitment agencies. You may have to pay more for credit, or you may be refused loans, if you cross invisible lines with your digital life. You may be denied health insurance. You may be subject to even more surveillance if data collected on you by a private company is caught up in a government data request dragnet. It's no different than anything else that grows and tries to expand the user base to people who are just starting out and don't have years of previous experience that they can fall back on. Look at the computer industry and early internet where there was little hand-holding and people needed to spend a lot of time figuring things out. Unfortunately if you're a company that wants to increase their customer-base, that naturally requires dumbing-down the product so that more people are able to use it.

Try and make something that harkens back to that time and you'll get called elitist or get accused of gate-keeping. I recall this happening last year (or was it the year before) when Cuphead came out and was brutally difficult, but had a tutorial level that didn't spell things out for you where some hapless reviewer got stuck on something that seemed simple if you had any knowledge of platformers and was pilloried for it.

There's a pretty good video that discusses the whole concept of tutorials and using good level design to teach gameplay that's worth the watch if you haven't seen it already. There's a good deal of profanity used, so you might not want to blast it if you're at work.

Yes, Amazon was starting to think that a consensus was forming that once they committed to building, they'd not want to abandon that, and so they'd be ripe for endless groups who'd be wanting to wet their beak. I'm a retired union construction worker living not too far from where this headquarters would be built, and the salaries of the blue collar jobs that go with it, and they'd not just come from the construction, would be offering a better salary than what many workers are currently getting. Actually I support thousands of machines using UFS. I can debug the filesystem code and have done so many times. So, yeah, I'm quite familiar with it. It's absolutely still in use in many many places (mostly legacy Solaris machines or on new NetBSD and/or FreeBSD boxes with low memory). Just because *you* don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there. Sure there are better file systems with more modern ideas incorporated into them like btrees, journaling or logging, and many other items like pseudo-volume-management like ZFS does. However, I'd point out that FAT is still in pretty wide use today and it's inferior to UFS in almost every way. So, the ever-lame "OMG that's so old" is just an ignorant and tiresome reaction like some scene from Idiocracy "Water... like from the toilet?". Water is "old" too. UFS is quite fast compared with FAT file systems (and beats ext2 quite handily most of the time, too depending on the workload). It's also easily tuned for prefetch caching on most systems that support it and it's ability to handle power failures is going to depend greatly on how much write-back caching is being used (and if it's battery backed or not). UFS in FreeBSD and NetBSD support logging quite nicely and handle power failures just fine, thanks (MUCH better than, say, ext4 which in my lab tests a few years ago performed the worst in power failure testing).

The point (besides you have no idea WTF you are talking about concerning UFS) is that manufacturers will start re-using acronyms that have been heavily used by others in the past and it pollutes search results for the unrelated items.
