Real-time video of that 2014 launch
The first video that you mentioned is interesting for slow-motion visual detail, but viewers might like to know that it was apparently slowed by a factor of 10, compared to the original which can be seen here on YouTube. Total flight duration: about 20 seconds. The real thing looks quite a bit less NASA-esque than the slow-motion version!
It’s also pretty obvious that he was not actually in that “manned flight”. Look at the crumpled results (expected from the shredded parachute!) in the still photographs from the second video, where you can also see him standing casually around, wearing T-shirt and shorts (rather than some protective gear), identical to what he was wearing just before the flight (beginning of video).

Re:MehThe funny part is where you think there will be a Democrat administration in the next 20 years. The DNC is on fire right now, the corporate wing kicked out the SJW wing and stacked the Rules Committee with its supporters. They came out in court and stated that they don't run a democracy, they are a private organization who can appoint whoever they like as nominee. They've got nothing, nothing in the tank for 2020 and beyond. Hillary Clinton wants to run again. Creepy Joe Biden is just waiting for his scandal to drop, for some bizarre reason the media isn't running with his child fondling. Senator Al Franken is a sex offender and who knows how many other bombs are in the closet waiting to go off.
There's Tulsi Gabbard but she's on the shitlist for reaching out to Trump. If Trump can deliver economic growth and jobs which he appears to be doing, and especially if he can do something for the blacks in the inner city, the Democratic Party is finished.

Re:Best chance at reversal of this in the near fut
Ajit Pai (and his GOP-appointed counterpart) had their minds made up years ago, and his doggedly stubborn position feels like it's based in ideology instead of the facts presented by his opponents.
Just compare this PBS.org interview where Mr. Pai used the same selective dodging of the facts pointed out by NN advocates (especially John Oliver's piece on the subject back in the day) that don't support his point of view. Then watch John Oliver's simplistic but factually correct episodes from 2014 and 2017 - Part One and 2017 - Part Two on the issue.
Either John Oliver (and his writing/research staff) or Ajit Pai is an outright liar about this issue. Any bets on who's the fibber? It's either a left-leaning comedian, or a former Verizon Wireless lawyer. (TIP: Don't bet the farm on this being a bad John Oliver joke...)

The Sins of local Advertising Agencies
I have always wonder why some local Advertising Agencies are using YouTube Creator Music for their clients TV Ads. - https://www.youtube.com/channe... - After you have listened the same tune used (and misused) hundreds of times, it lose the crucial brand building factor for any business. - Today, in the country where I live, this conversation is becoming too common:::: Where I have heard that tune before?... Oh, it's the background music for a lot of popular videos on YouTube... Oddly enough, before the Internet Era, a few local Advertising Agencies just copied popular Advertising Campaigns from other countries and sold them to local Advertisers.

Re:Doesn't believe in science...
Hypothesis testing is obviously the foundation of science, but it's not the whole thing. There's also building on the successes and failures of others, and thinking critically about your own experiments. Without those things you don't get far.
Here's why building on what other people have accomplished is critical to scientific results. Suppose this guy launches himself as high as he possibly can with his steam cannon. He doesn't see the curvature of the Earth. Impressive as his stunt may be, has he disproved anything? No. It just proves that his chosen method has failed. You need to evaluate methods other people have chosen to reach high altitudes and choose the best or improve on the best you can afford.
Here's a simple example of the importance of critical thinking: given his downrange goals (note he hasn't mentioned his altitude goals) I reckon he's not likely to exceed 500m in elevation. He could get to 8x that altitude simply by climbing nearby Mount Whitney. But even Everest isn't high enough, you need to get 50% higher. For that the best approach would be to build a high altitude balloon. The recent record breaking parachute jumps were done from manned balloons that rose high enough to see the curvature of the Earth (39 km), and a simple manned capsule would be even cheaper.
But if you really want to do science on a shoestring, an unmanned weather balloon is the way to go is an unmanned weather balloon, which is easily cheaper and simpler than trying to steam catapult yourself to 30+ km. In fact you can buy a weather balloon on Amazon for $100 that will reach 35km. That's not as high as the video above, but it's high enough to photograph the curvature of the Earth.

It sounds like they are planning on setting up something similar to Intel Management Engine (ME). This opens the host computer up to a whole range of persistent attacks. This is probably why so many people are working on disabling this from running on Intel boxes [1].

Might not have a fixed rotational axis
Only the maximum and minimum moments of inertia are stable in rotation. If you try to spin an object around any other axis, it will tumble - the axis of rotation varies relative to the body. Every spacecraft or satellite that's launched had some poor slob whose job was to get the exact mass, location, and inertia tensor of every single component put into the spacecraft, and put it into a huge spreadsheet. Then he uses that to calculate the minimum and maximum moments of inertia of the spacecraft. If the desired spin axis doesn't line up with either of these moments, then he has to change the location of some of the components of the spacecraft until it does (like positioning weights on a tire when you balance it)..
With round or nearly round objects, the min/max moment of inertia isn't very different from from the inertia around other axes, so this oscillation tends to be very slow and not noticeable. But it's much more likely to be pronounced with an elongated and flattened body. -

Re:I really wish Linus would grow up
Linus explains here why he is rude, in short, to be clear and avoid giving false hope, which in the past has lead to big problems.
Sure, many people can be clear and avoid giving false hope without being rude.
But perhaps he has not found a way to be _able_ to do that _himself_, with the same (effective) _results_ as his current rudeness.
Instead of blaming him for this (which I don't necessarily say you shouldn't), also consider the possibility he is just incapable of communicating in a better way (again, with the same results), or is just more afraid/intolerant of the consequences of misunderstandings due to his personal experiences in the past.
Or, he is just rude and just doesn't care, but the above talk suggests there is more at play and it has a real and important function. -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?... [youtube.com] - it was the kind of driving error humans rarely make (at least not this human).
This would be why we don't bother with red light cameras. Because people rarely run them.

[youtube.com] - again not a common accident if you simply checked your mirrors before changing lanes (busses are not hard to see) - not to mention at least where I live - it was a moving violation too - you can't turn left from a right turn only lane at an intersection.
When driving, not many problems are really major problems if you're paying attention to what you do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?... [youtube.com] - another uber crash - probably the other drivers fault, but again failing to yield was an edge case - most people would have slowed to a stop rather than crash. Programmers hate edge cases.
As long as the other person's paying attention...
I have no doubt they will be safer than normal drivers, but who do you blame when (not if) they make some critical error.
Google's view is that Google is the driver and fines should be sent there. Same with lawsuits. (I'd assume they buy insurance or self insure. The main thing is safer than normal drivers. Once you've got that, everything else is minor. You're talking about lives saved vs questions of insurance claims.

Re:2021? Maybe.
Normal? As if anything about NYC traffic is normal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
So human drivers have failed. I dunno, dude. It's getting pretty tiresome to respond to your (and other's) random specific scenarios, so many of which humans already fail hardcore in. Or to your weird ones that rely on stuff like it currently being OK for pedestrians to just walk out into busy intersections.... It's not. If NYC is difficult, it doesn't get done yet. It's got about a 10th of a percent of the world's population. Do it in easier places, learn and expand. If you come up with a place where it's unsuitable, ask yourself the percent of the world where that isn't a problem. It starts in those places first and we learn. This won't be perfect. We're not perfect either. It only needs to be better than us. Over all better than us. Not better than us in every single specific scenario you can think of, but globally, lead to a reduction in fatalities.

Plastafarianism
The point of the (well written) original article was that Damore had handled things poorly due to his condition, not that his opinions arose due to his condition.
Wow, today's first winner in the reading comprehension test.
I'll do you further honour by not even awarding you a gold star, which you would humbly decline in any case, recognizing that this "amazing" feat of yours was merely degree of difficulty 1.0 (had Slashdot not degenerated into some kind of Special Olympic group hug for the reading impaired).
Pinker vs. Spelke — 2005
On 22 April 2005, Harvard University's Mind/Brain/Behavior Initiative held a debate on the public discussion that began on January 16th with the public comments by Lawrence Summers, president of Harvard, on sex differences between men and women and how they may relate to the careers of women in science.
...It's interesting to note that since the controversy surrounding Summers' remarks began, there has been an astonishing absence of discussion of the relevant science
... you won't find it in the hundreds of articles in major newspapers; nor will find it in the Harvard faculty meetings where the president of the [smuggest] university in America was indicted for presenting controversial ideas. This entire debate just seems fated to devolve into Plastafarianism.
Plastafarianism is a religious order that believes that human behaviour is so infinitely malleable, that no observed human behaviour whatsoever can't be adequately (and preferably) explained by environmental cues or conditioning.
Failure to share the perspective that such explanations are universally adequate, complete, satisfactory, and decisively preferable in all discourse dimensions will get your balls cut off.
Plastafarianism believes that whatever evolutionary biology brought to the male/female table has already undergone so many cultural face lifts, it's surpassed the 3.0 emjay* threshold of utterly obscured, obliterated, and eradicated (UOOE).
[*] An exponential scale where 0.5 emjays is defined as precisely fifty M.J. years (The Evolution Of Michael Jackson's Face 1958 FROM 2009).
Earnest discussion of effects above and beyond the 3.0 emjay threshold is either a form of cultural psychosis or culpable gullibility (at which point, the though police arrive in their giant white hats, bearing shrink-wrap David Byrne white suits, and powerful white heat guns).
One of the old tenets of feminism is that once we kick all the old hidebound alpha males out of political office, the world will become a kinder and gentler place—because the women who will slot in to replace these males really are wired differently, biologically. Unfortunately, the XX chromosome test hasn't proved much better at screening out assholes than your mother's tired, old Y chromosome test.
Why Some Teams Are Smarter Than Others — 18 January 2015
Finally, teams with more women outperformed teams with more men. Indeed, it appeared that it was not "diversity" (having equal numbers of men and women) that mattered for a team's intelligence, but simply having more women. This last effect, however, was partly explained by the fact that women, on average, were better at "mindreading" [cognitive empathy] than men.
Huh, women might perform better than men in some corporate settings due to a possibly innate biological advantage (though Plastifarianism would deny that any such biological factor—even a relatively strong effect*—could withstand the lawfully established 3.0 emjay UOOE social pertinence filter).
[*] Plastifarians are presently hard at work reha
