The reality is...
... technology dystopia can't be avoided under a private ownership model. You can't hold tech and software companies accountable when they are 100's of miles away.
The reason why the world is corrupt as fuck and why human culture is being destroyed and corporations rule the world, is because people are politically and historically illiterate. If one looks objectively at the facts. We live in a lawless oligarchy and have for 200 years if intellectual property law is anything to go by. So no, until people start to really understand how their society actually works and stop falling for oligarch asskissing free market fundy ideology, the madness will continue.

Re:What no global warming article?
Why would you have ten years left to live, I have heard of no one who can make those guarantees. Climate change or not, you could be dead tomorrow or a week from now. How ever, if you do own a low lying seafront home, yeah, it will probably be dead, 'er', wave washed rubble within ten years, underwater front, it's a thing, get used to it. Definitely sell and do not buy, let some other sucker let their investment drown and 'DIE'. There is always stilt homes and amphibious vehicles, drive one of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?... to you home from the shore and back (it's Russia and that makes it much funnier). This is not a pro-climate change comment, it is an ATV comment

Re:AV1 is pointless
I don't think you understand the scope of the problem.
The AV1 encoder is slow but it's still practical enough for the large scale VOD platforms to use it today. YouTube has encoded a lot of video in AV1 up to 720p as is, and will probably re-encode them in future as the encoder improves.
You can try it for yourself on YouTube by turning on the "Always Prefer AV1" setting in TestTube and then play some videos (music videos are good ones to try). You can tell it's in AV1 by right-clicking on the video and selecting "Stats for Nerds". If the video is in AV1 then the codec will be "av01.0.05M.08". You can also try their AV1 Playlist which includes higher resolution AV1 encodes.

I sure wish you had been gone for a long time creimer but you are obviously still around, even modding yourself up with your sock puppet accounts!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Cryptofeces Lepidoptera Creimerus infestation is a serious problem. Not only are they capable of reproducing asexually like amoebas, they can also lay eggs hermaphroditically in unexpected places. They can disguise eggs as something useful to fool the unaware, sometimes pretending to be a haiku author, blogger, vlogger, or IT closet cleaner.
Very dangerous. They can seemingly reproduce out of the cosmic background radiation, even if you step on twelve of them, there's always one you miss.
Don't be fooled by the C. Lepidoptera Creimerus's innocuous, rolly-polly, and almost friendly appearance; despite its great size, stupid demeanor, and bedraggled toothless appearance, they have the hardiness of a tardigrade.
Only a concerted, targeted downmodding campaign has been shown effective in controlling this dangerous pest.
Experience shows that stopping such a campaign leads to C. Lepidoptera Creimerus returning within days.
Don't let it happen again!

Re:Microsoft should cease to exist.
They then stand a chance to be #2 behind Google.
TFS says MS is giving up its own engine and switching to Chromium's. Leaving Firefox/Gecko as the only major alternative. It would then be a team of Microsoft/Google against Mozilla (skipping the minor players. I'm sure Microsoft would rather have a two way stand-off once Mozilla is gone (embrace, extend, and exterminate) than get caught in a three-way competition. You never know who's got your back.

Dan Sacks points the backfire effect at C/C++
I first came across the backfire effect as such roughly two years ago from the following presentation:
Dan Saks on talking to C programmers about C++ — September 2016
Key point: If you're arguing, you're losing.
Some of my old bookmarks:
18m00 "show me all the data you want, C++ is still undesirable"
28m00 Jonathan Haidt and motivated reasoning
43m50 ethics of persuasion
46m50 backfire effect
55m26 concrete suggestionsConcrete suggestions begins with the simple question: "how would you define a data type?" and then delivers a lesson on articulating what you (probably) already know.
Then there's a case study on developing a type safe array memcpy in pure C (you can almost get there, but not quite).
Along the way there's a pointed case study in humility porn on implicit decay in function argument context, which I think is intended to raise "good grief" eyebrows on both sides of the aisle.
What is array decaying?
Exceptions to array decaying into a pointer? This presentation feels as old as dirt and twice as slow, but the value is solid.

Re:FAILURE TO COMPETE
The charges don't make any sense. The claim that they tried to steal a robot from T-Mobile called "Tappy". T-Mobile didn't build it though, it's an off-the-shelf Epson robot with some basic programming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
http://web.archive.org/web/201...It seems extremely unlikely that Huawei would bother steal something that they could just buy and get an undergrad to program for them. All i does is press some buttons in sequence over and over to see how long they take to fail. Some simple calibration for pressure to simulate a heavy handed user is all you need.
Huawei didn't steal 5G tech, it invented it. Its patents cover the modulation schemes, the bandwidth allocation and spectrum sharing, the power management that minimizes interference and maximizes battery life. If those things were stolen then they would have been patented elsewhere, or the patents challenged. It's original technology that China developed.

Moreover if you've been paying any attention there's been massive productivity boosts in all those fields. My company is throwing up a new building for a little over 1000 employees in 10 months. When I was a kid that kind of thing took years. They've had these puppies for at least 10 years now. I'm sure you can find equivalent tech in plumbing if you know where to look.
As for carpentry, I know some blue collar guys pissed because they used to get free wood at job sites when the job was over. That's all stopped. They order exactly what they need and it comes pre cut. There's your automation. It happens at a factory and a computer automatically handles the logistics of getting it there. Before long you won't even need the drivers. Just a couple of day laborers to unload it all and hammer it together... -

Huawei stole trade secrets from American rival?
“U.S. prosecutors filed criminal charges against Huawei, China's largest smartphone maker, alleging it stole trade secrets from an American rival and committed bank fraud by violating sanctions against doing business with Iran.”
The alleged trade secrets being a robot arm called tappy. They could have saved themselves the bother and bought one direct from Epson. The real story being this prosecution being used as a pretext to hinder Chinese firms doing business in the US. This prosecution being pushed by the corporate owners of America. Another sign that there is no one in the driving seat in Washington. -

That's because Socialism isn't relavent
to the discussion. Venezuela's problems have more to do with the collapsing price of oil and the most powerful nation on earth cutting them out of the global banking network via sanctions.
Venezuela is a small island nation that only recently became a civilized place when their Dictator, for reasons of his own, decided to share some wealth with the general population. This was not OK. The powers that be do not want this. That oil was theirs. He can have his banana republic but they get the oil. That's how this works.
While we're talking about things our media never seems to say, how about we talk about where all those refugees that our president just shut down our government (to the tune of $11 billion in loses, $3 of which we'll never get back) came from?
You want more refugees? You want more folks streaming over the boarder taking your jobs? This is how you get that. You destabilize a country so rich people can step in and steal the oil. Then you impoverish a country for generations which means violence and folks desperate enough to cross an ocean on a raft.
But I haven't heard a bloody peep about that from the media. When it comes to war (and make no mistake, they're gearing up to put boots on the ground just like they did with Syria) the media never met one they didn't like. That more than anything tells you who's _really_ in charge of this country, and it sure as hell ain't you and me. -
Re:Bullshit
I am not saying screw-rolling equipment, which us manufactures still use (te-co is one example), granted not for standard fasteners. Those would make screws in the rate of 5 / second or something around there. I am talking about swiss-machining. These pieces of equipment are very common in the US. They would produce a part like this in the range of 5 seconds / screw, not 30 seconds / screw and are generally made for lights-off machining (24 hr production). Screw machines could make these things maybe 500k in a 24 hour period (the ones sold overseas), I would expect a swiss machine to make around 15k in a 24 hour period.
It sounds like the company making these are using standard lathes to reach this level of production or are using the machines only a few hours a day.
Here is an example of a swiss-style machine https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Maduro is probably not a nice chap
but he is the democratically elected representative of the nation. The opposition party decided to boycott the election. I haven't heard anyone say it was out of fear of reprisals either (ala Russia). The fact that there _is_ an opposition party indicates that Maduro isn't doing pogroms.
I think this is our CIA gearing up for more "liberation". Here's a series of clips of Donald Trump saying the quiet part out loud. e.g. we're going in to steal their oil. You can argue that Maduro was gonna steal it anyway, and maybe you're right. But that doesn't make us doing it right.
The part I really hate though is that the American war mongers start trouble south of the border and then use the refugees they created to frighten people into voting for them. That's where those "caravans" are coming from. That's just insane that it works... -

Re:America Did Not Outsource Manufacturing
Except that the American manufacturing sector is doing just fine, better than it ever was. See https://www.forbes.com/sites/t... . But the nature of manufacturing has changed over the years and involves fewer jobs before. And the things that are manufactured tend to not be consumer goods but big ticket items. For example agricultural equipment is still made in the US and exported all over the world. China imports this equipment. There are cottage industries in the US making all sorts of goods (with a lot of Chinese components). All told, American industry is quite healthy despite what some folk say loudly.
As was said earlier, labor is not really a part of the equation when it comes to overseas outsourcing. It's the supply chain that draws companies to China. For example this company making pinball machines in China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Attempts to start a trade war with china do nothing to help American industry. In fact it hurts it by cutting off the supply chain we need to make cool things here at home.

Late Stage Socialism
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/0...
Conspicuous by its absence in much of the mainstream news coverage of Venezuela’s political crisis is the word “socialism.” Yes, every sensible observer agrees that Latin America’s once-richest country, sitting atop the world’s largest proven oil reserves, is an economic basket case, a humanitarian disaster, and a dictatorship whose demise cannot come soon enough.
But socialist? Perish the thought.
Or so goes a line of argument that insists socialism’s good name shouldn’t be tarred by the results of experience. On Venezuela, what you’re likelier to read is that the crisis is the product of corruption, cronyism, populism, authoritarianism, resource-dependency, U.S. sanctions and trickery, even the residues of capitalism itself. Just don’t mention the S-word because, you know, it’s working really well in Denmark.
Curiously, that’s not how the Venezuelan regime’s admirers used to speak of “21st century socialism,” as it was dubbed by Hugo Chávez. The late Venezuelan president, said Britain’s Jeremy Corbyn, “showed us there is a different and a better way of doing things. It’s called socialism, it’s called social justice, and it’s something that Venezuela has made a big step toward.” Noam Chomsky was similarly enthusiastic when he praised Chávez in 2009. “What’s so exciting about at last visiting Venezuela,” the linguist said, is that “I can see how a better world is being created and can speak to the person who’s inspired it.”

Re:no one in the usa will work for $2.15/hr 60-80
This is correct. Americans commonly have a mental picture of illiterate workers toiling on dirt floors making "cheap Chinese goods". That is not modern Chinese manufacturing and the preconception is one of our big blind spots.
Here's an example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
This company makes beautiful multi-color silk-screened multi-layer through-hole plated PCBs for cheaper than I can buy bare copper plate board to etch them myself.
When I want to go to production I can have the boards shipped directly to an assembler there and I get finished machine assembled, soldered, and tested boards for less than the cost of shipping everything here and assembling it myself.

it uses Uranium fuel with molten sodium coolant
In case anyone was wondering.
Had to skim almost the whole article to find out this simple little bit of info.
Gates wants to build a Uranium based "traveling wave" style reactor using molten sodium for cooling. The technology is problematic, hasn't ever been tested on large scale. Requires metal alloys that are still being developed and still uses a rare, expensive and inherently dangerous fuel. Some experts say the tech is potentially decades away from being viable.
Disclaimer: I am an advocate of LFTR (Liquid Floride Thorium Reactor) based energy generation. The tech still needs work but its closer to reality than what Gates wants.
