When I clicked on the live web cam there wasn't anything interesting. After a few reloads though, someone had strategically placed some attractive women in from of the camera. I wasn't listening to the audio, so I'm not sure who they are. Anyone know? Here are some of the pictures. Pic 1, Pic 2, Pic 3

Obviously, they're selling BSD in some fashion. As we all know, /. isn't just for Linux, it's for techies, and when you want a secure web server, BSD is something to think about.

If you wanted free adverts, it might be a good idea to wear your product t-shirt or hat, with the logo and web address and talk to a customer facing the web cam. Then your site can be slashdotted at no advertising cost

Question: Is there any way to use additional (mirroring) servers for the mp3 stream? I can't connect. It either gets stuck while "reading response" or kicks me with server full.

Yes those women in the pics are from the BSD booth, coming over to see/advertise-on slashdot. It's funny to see the ways companies/orginizations try to get people to come and see them. I went there and picked up my "Free BSD" CD/floppies, and it comes with a paper that reads that it is an evaluation copy. How can a Free BSD give evaluation copies that expire in 60 days??! If I remember correctly, they did the same thing to me last year, and that was why I never installed it. Maybe I read it wrong. If anyone knows, please respond. I like to be open, and want to install *BSD to work with my Linux boxes. But they left me confused!

Must... put... more... servers... that's kinda what's nice about icecast/shoutcast, you can have one streaming location that streams to several servers that can handle a lot of bandwidth.

Seriously though, mp3-2.thesync.com resolves to only one IP address. Surely slashdot of all people would have figured we are gonna need more than one server. Never-the-less, TheSync set it up, so slashdot probably didn't have much control over it. Its a great idea, I just wish I could listen to it too! :)

On second thought, you might be right. The humor comes from the fact that the stereotypical cyberpunk is a white guy wearing black, whereas this person is a black guy wearing white. Clearly there is no humor if you ignore his race. And yet, I don't think I'm bringing any prejudice to this joke. I'm not imputing any characteristic to the person in question. Everything I say about him is obvious from his appearance, and is not demeaning. I mean, for all I know, that guy could be some famous and sublime geek who is purposefully creating his own parody of the cyberpunk regalia. And if that's the case, I'd look pretty dumb for pointing out the obvious, eh?

You are right, I did get confused with the BSD/OS because they are right next to each other. When I went to the booth, the FreeBSD guys/gals were not there, so I strolled too far an ended up with the BSD/OS people, and thought I was still with the Free BSD. My mistake, sorry.
Thanks for the invite on the picture with the daemonettes, but my wife won't care for that
BTW, I did pick up a copy of the Free BSD, and I do plan on trying it out. I think it will go well with my Slackware and RedHat machines.

What soft is available for streaming mp3? I'd like to listen to the radio in my office, but there's no radio reception this deep inside. Presumably I could put a Linux box and a radio on the net near a window. What do I run?

try mpg123 or xmms, both of these can stream mp3s. If these won't work for you, there's always http://freshmeat.net/.

no mirrors, sorry. it keeps coming and going; it's really frustrating. we had a discussion with the crowd on the lack of women in the computer industry a while ago, and now emmett is ranting on linuxone. the audio only seems to work when there's nothing much going on. grrrr... icecast encodes ok, but then has trouble connecting to the sync.

I'm at work now so I'm behind a firewall. I don't have a Linux box here either. Is it possible to listen to this on NT from behine a firewall? I have Winamp and I specified my http proxy under the streaming preferences. When I enter the streaming URL in the open location dialog I just get a series of dialog boxes that say "Error: not a valid MPEG file"
we got it all going, then icecast flaked for a what seemed to be a very long and very nerve-racking time. sorry about that; it's all better now. of course, if you're listening now, you're not hearing anything because we're not saying anything. :) just keep it running in the background, and crank it up when the next show starts. in the meantime, you can bring up the webcam and watch me typing this to you. :-)
