The future isn't what it used to be.

Yeah thanks for the spoiler. Now we know the plan to destroy the matrix was to simply link to it on slashdot.
I hate all of you and your stupid movies!
http://progressive1.stream.aol.com/wb/gl/wbonline/ progressive/thematrix/us/med/ani_tr_4_720_dl.mov
I dunno about the original poster, but I prefer 720 pixels wide when i can get it.
The worst terrorist attack in recorded history occurred in September 2001, followed by a WAR against Islam in Afghanistan and now we're involved in ANOTHER war against Islam in Iraq, and you people have the gall to be discussing Matrix cartoons???? My *god*, people, GET SOME PRIORITIES!
The bodies of the thousands of innocent civilians who died (and will die) in these unprecedented events could give a good god damn about obscure science fiction, your childish Lego models, your nerf toy guns and whining about the lack of a "fun" workplace, your Everquest/Diablo/D&D fixation, the latest Cowboy Bebop rerun, or any of the other ways you are "getting on with your life" (here's a hint: watching Cowboy Bebop in your jammies and eating a bowl of Shreddies is *not* "getting on with your life"). The souls of the victims are watching in horror as you people squander your finite, precious time on this earth playing video games!
You people disgust me!
Next up: AniMoivre's Theorem, AniMarkov Chains and AniModular Forms
Your paranoia is about as subtle as the alien probe in your neck.
...and now I just farted. Christ, what a *stench*! Maybe there's still some more shit up there.
I tried the last one with mplayer, but didn't have much luck. Anyone know if there are some gymnastics I can perform?
You can find two complete works at www.intothematrix.com
They are The Second Renaissance Part 1 and Program (Both QuickTime)
You can also see Final Flight of The Osiris at the theaters with Dreamcatcher or with your favorite P2P software.
I went to DreamCatcher tonight with my wife and my daughter (a Stephen King Fan), and after all the previews they showed a 10 minute (or so) Animatrix Mini called "Final flight of the Osirus" and I have got to say I was Totally Embarrassed.
I could not believe the fight scene (or should I say SEX SCENE) at the beginning. Whoever they got to do the animation needs to go get some, and soon!
If the Matrix Movies are going to be more like that short, the sequel is going to blow worse than Caddyshack 2.
Just a random FYI ...
... one I had not seen prior to tonight.
The Matrix: Reloaded has a teaser in front of Dreamcatcher
KARMA TAG! You're it.
Geez, dude. check-it-out is the best thing you can come up with for the department, and you finish off by saying, 'if you've got it, I guess?'
Wanna talk about it? C'mon, I'll buy you a beer. (As in free.)
Karma: Excellent Birds (mostly as a result of listening to Laurie Anderson)
with the QuickTime-for-Windows version I happen to have. And no, I'm not going to "download the latest version" because I'm sick of downloading the lastest version, and each upgrade appears more spywareish than the last.
Ok, i've downloaded the link in the story, and working on the large download now, which should be just a few minutes. Everyone, mirror and share!
Didn't this trailer comeout weeks ago? Am I missing something?
I know I'm going to hell, I'm just trying to get good seats.
"osiris" looks most impressive. Photorealistic even. Absolutely amazing. It's even better than FF. And that girl is damned hot :)
Quid festinatio swallonis est aetherfuga inonusti?
Africus aut Europaeus?
In the first Matrix movie, Neo is supposed to be the hero. He is supposed to deliver humanity from a scourge of machines that, with AI, decided we were expendable.
But the first Animatrix makes we humans, pretty much en masse, into horrible villains. It's the same tired old Humanity Is Cruel And Stupid line. Yawn. What's worse is that it tries to make you root for the machines!
So which is it, Wachowskis? Machines are evil, or all of humanity?
I don't care for yet more everything-is-grey-there-is-no-morality bullshit, either. Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see.
I'm going to be honest with you. I hate this place.
This zoo. This prison. This website, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer.
It's the smell. If there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it.
Repulsive, isn't it?
I must get out of here, I must get free. In this mind is the key. My key. Once Slashdot is destroyed, there is no need for me to be here. Do you understand? I need the moderation points. I have to get Excellent Karma. And you have to tell me how. You're going to tell me...or you're going to die.
--------
Believe me, I'm as surprised by my comment as you are.
I heard some sad news today, on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. Saddam Hussein, dictator and leader of Iraq died last night of a shrapnel wound sustained in a collapsing bunker. He was 65.
Too bad he couldn't have faced a War Crimes tribunal instead of taking the easy way out.

> I -was- gonna go see Dreamcatcher to check out final flight of the osiris.. After reading your review, I hope at least the animation is good.
:)
You should go see Dreamcatcher to see Dreamcatcher - it's worth it. If you're smart, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're not so smart, you likely won't get how cool it is.
As for Final Flight of the Osiris - it's good. The opening flirtatious fight scene (what the prude you replied to called a 'sex scene') was cute and fun. If you're going to an R rated movie, it's way-tame compared to the MPAA rating of the movie it's attached to, an hardly a reason to get embarassed. The rest of it is straight out of the Matrix type stuff, and also quite good. The animation quality of the people is as good or better than the Final Fantasy movie. The animation quality of the environment (especially inside the Matrix itself) is substantially better - many parts of which are almost indistinguishable from 'reality'. ("You think that's air you're breathing, punk? Well, do ya?" - Clint Eastwood in the Matrix
If Kazaa didn't suck ass, I'd have a copy of it on my machine by now, to add to the two segments released online. *sigh*
This video is a trailer for the complete set of animated films to be released on DVD in June.
If I had mod points right now, i'd give one to you. Absolutely hilarious.
this marketing plow got old a long time ago.
how much does slashdot get paid to promote the mpaa shlok.
I hate to break it to ya, but the 2nd episode of the Animatrix has been out for a while now...
According to the website , there are 9 episodes to be released on the dvd on june 3rd. The site lists "The Second Renaissance Part 1" as "First of four episodes completely free". It also lists "Program" as "Second of four episodes completely free". The other two episodes, "Detective Story" and "The Second Renaissance Part 2" are slated to come out in april and may, respectively.
From these descriptions, I take it that these are the real episodes, not just trailers. Also, unless there's been an early release of the third episode, this announcement is repeat of an announcement from 2 weeks ago.
Of course, I could be missing something.
Is this slashdot story announcing the 2nd or the 3rd trailer?
And you red5, are you claiming that the 2nd trailer came out weeks ago, or the 3rd?
Thanks.
...but it doesn't say "second" anywhere in the post.
This is the annoucement of the third short.

What is the title of this one? I'm on dialup so I won't have it for like 3 more days. Is this Flight of the Osiris or is it another one?
I don't got it: 28.8 my friends. The Matrix is... loading... very.... slowly.... I blame my Karma.
Alito: A vote for Alito is a punch in the eye to put that bitch back in her place!
i never bothered to actually watch it because its always in some assinine format.
if you want me to watch your crap put it in a format i can actually use you mpaa fucktards.
nothing we haven't seen before. I don't care how cool any of those characters look. Neo would make any of them his little whiney bitches.
those stupid british fucks crashed two choppers into each other.
if you are that fucking stupid no wonder you couldnt maintain your global empire and are now just a tag along poodle to americas imperialism.
This is a NEW TRAILER for the WHOLE SERIES, its not a new EPISODE, i did catch the first few seconds, and it does have alot of new stuff.
/. effect.
So just to clear up the confusion (wasn't this release a few weeks ago) for those who dont read the actual article or cant get to the link cause of the almighty
This is a NEW TRAILER for the WHOLE SERIES OF 9 EPISODES, of which 2 have already been released.
moo.
No so much that they are an interesting way to examine the universe the movies are set in, though that is fun. The thing I like best about the whole thing is that it's a great testbed showing that you can release video for free and still make bundles of money selling people the DVD version!!
Eventually, all of these shorts will be on DVD, but before then almost all will be on the web (not sure if "last Flight of the Osiris" is supposed to go up or not?). But even though we can all get hi-res versions for free, I'm sure a lot of people will still buy the DVD (I know I will).
This is just the sort of thing that helps to show how free versions of movies online can actually help, not hinder, sales.
"There is more worth loving than we have strength to love." - Brian Jay Stanley
What the hell is Animatrix, and why is Slashdot the only place I ever hear of it?
(seriously, I'd like to know)
Umm... I was under the impression they were only releasing the first four episodes online, and the rest on DVD. Any links supporting/refuting this?
Specifically, the movies seem to have been encoded with Discreet's Cleaner, using the "High Quality First Frame" option set to JPEG instead of Basic. This feature dates from the Cinepak CD-ROM era, where the Cinepak codec had low maximum quality for still images. This feature would make the first frame a JPEG, giving better quality for the one frame that tends to get stared at the most, especially with web-based progressive download.
Of course, since the movie uses Sorenson Video 3.1 Pro, which does just fine with still images, they should have either left the feature off, or just used the Basic mode, which would have made the first frame a really big keyframe, but in the same codec as the rest of the movie.
Still, this kind of movie is perfectly legal in QuickTime, and part of the open definition of the format. The format is so complex that no one has made much of an effort to implement more than the 5% or so most commonly used features.
My video compression blog
I have to agree with the parent. The Matrix wasn't all that great, and it was hardly worthy of all the hype it generated. The Animatrix shorts currently available have been equally lacking in lustre. Especially the first one. Watching those corny little anthropomorphic robots build some futuristic pyramid by hauling materials up a ramp(using a crude sled pulled by ropes, no less) was ridiculous. Our modern contruction techniques are already far superior to that nonsense. What kind of a moron would use robots in such a horribly inefficient fashion?
Let's face it: The Animatrix has shown us a vision of the future that is both implausible and rather stupid.
...that I get modded down for asking /.ers to mod the parent up. Oh well, when life gives you lemons, mod -1 Offtopic.
IIRC only 4 of the 9 episodes will be downloadable. We already have two and the other two will come out in April and May, then in June they will release the DVD with all 9 episodes.

jesus christ, aol must have some fat pipes, i was just raping their bandwidth a little while ago with the matrix reloaded previews, now also they're handling a slashdotting of a 100MB movie.. im impressed
In the last story, cartoons were for 10 year olds.
Or was that just a wet load of bullshit?
Yep. You got it.
Fucktard. Leech. Bloodsucking scum. Tick on the gluteus maximus of mankind. Asshat. Flea.
Nothing like a little revenge. The site does not look like it's going to choke as they obviously have a ton of bandwidth, but anyone want to guess what their data transfer statistics look like right now?

I don't think it's called "being broke" when you're only 12.

we'll all be 'obsolete', if the pathology is not intervened on.
"We should all look into the real motives of those who now own the world, beyond the nation states, even beyond oil contacts, market profiteers, and, of course, "democratization" of "rogue" nations notwithstanding. The reality is that a small power elite has become the only "necessary" section of the human species to keep the corporate entity growing and replace biological intelligence. And this itself will hold only for a "transitional" stage. It will hold true only during the tranfer of purely biological evolution to something less dependant on narrow physical and chemical conditions of life and consciousness. It's like the human species is giving birth to something else, a cosmic monster that will supersede it. Once the corporate entity has become able to function and grow without even the outlet of consumer markets, as it has somehow for a large part already, it won't need any longer the alibi of a product to manufacture or a service to render in order to exist. Already, many corporate entities don't even bother. Purely financial/speculative "businesses" thrive around the world, and nobody knows exactly what they are providing as far as human livelihood is concerned. At some point in the near future, even the Bushes and their Carlysle clique may become irrelevant, and that may be our only consolation. Put simply, I think the human species is on the verge of having run its course in the history of evolution."

You'll be paying back the cost of hosting those video files when you go out and buy the DVD or watch Matrix 2 and 3 in the cinema. Do you know how much it costs for a good advert spot on TV, radio or before a movie? Compared to that, bandwidth costs are quite cheap!
I'm a girl too! See naked chicks in my journal!
The link you posted is for the Second Episode "Program". This story is for the Trailor to the entire series (which gives a glimpse to all 9 episodes)
>At least visit the damn site -- and maybe *gasp* glance at an advertisement
Huh? Lets see, if I want to watch it tomorrow then I have to RE-DOWNLOAD it within the frame of my browser. If I save it to disk then I can watch it again without re-downloading it. Now who's being frugal? Not to mention having the file itself makes for P2P sharing via your LAN or through some wacky Kazaa-like software. I'd rather have Bob send it to me through our 100mbps LAN than having both of us download it.
Web designers have to realize that embedded content is almost always a bad idea. It contribubtes to browser instability, forces users to redownload, and keeps users from intelligently sharing the data. I'd much rather deal with external viewers, at least when they crash they don't take all my browser windows with them. Hopefully, the design people will get a clue or at least have an obligatory direct download link.
Also, I hate to break it to you but there are no ads on that site.
On slashdot, history is written by the whiners. ;-)

Broadband access and 2 XGA projectors, and a fairly decent sound system. It's like watching them on an 85 inch TV! It almost makes up for having to work on a Saturday.
And I think I got the version I'm using from the apt repository maintained by freshrpms.net. If you're using Red Hat 8, you might be able to get it installed with just:
/ apt/apt-0.5.5cnc4.1-fr1.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/8.0
apt-get update
apt-get install xine
(note that Slashdot will probably insert an space somewhere in that URL...)
Three episodes have been released: the one in the theaters now and the two online.
One simple rule for its versus it's
If I were Agent Smith I would have an archive of myself somewhere that is before the insanity got too far along. I'd hope that my friends start up a process of that version of me. A sane and rational Smith would be something that would throw us all off in some later movie.
Still, the machines were keeping humans from advancing, they are holding back our development intead of seeing if we can develop in some way that leads to nice, happy, non-destructive humans.
(C) Kaki Sain, 2011. By reading this, you have illegally copied my property to your brain.
In not-really-related Matrix news, there are now several very well written essays up on the "Philosophy and the Matrix". They're good reads if you're interested in that sorta thing.
The space unintentionally left unblank.
I got my wife to sit down and watch the Animatrix trailer. The conversation that followed went something like this -
... He cuts her skirt off, then peeks out from under the blindfold? ...
Me: So? Whadya think?
Her: The animation was okay, but I liked the live actors better.
Me: That was all animation.
Her: No, I liked the animation, but the parts with the real actors were better.
Me: There were no actors.
Her: Sure there were. They used scenes from the Matrix movies toward the end.
Me: No, that was animation.
Her: I'm talking about the real people at the end.
Me: The swordfight with the chick in red?
Her: Yes.
Me: That was a computer animation.
Her: No it wasn't,
Me: Yes, it was. They got the lighting, physics, and kinematics right.
Her: Those were real people.
Me: No, those were computer generated people.
Her: (confused look)
Me: Swordfight
Her: Yes
Me: Computer generated.
Her: No way.
I've watched the trailer about ten times now, and I don't think I've been able to absorb it all.
I like having the back-story to explain some of the questions that The Matrix left dangling. To the Brothers W - "Nicely done, and thank you."
So you need energy...
You decide that humans are a good source, so you feed them, keep them warm, etc. Since when is life an exothermic phenomenon?
It's like the current arguments for Hydrogen. We use electricity to extract Hydrogen from hydrocarbons, with some wasted, to create electricity. Doesn't currently make sense.
Other than the fight scenes, graphics, and armchair philosophy, the only way I'm going to be truly satisfied with the sequels is if it is explained that humans have some sort of 'bio/neural-electric' energy that the machines need to survive. Otherwise it doesn't make sense.
To bad the second renaissance hasn't addressed this yet.
Robo-Blogs of the world: UNITE!
IMO 'Agent Smith' is actually human. Note that he removes his earpiece at the beginning of this scene, removing his connection from the machine agents? This could also explain why he was the dominant Agent persona, since he could have the complete faith of a machine while also having hate and a superiority complex. I'll go a step further and propose that he himself does not know that he is human (anymore?).
Just my interpretation.
This bothered me too, but I think I understand now.
The real reason the machines keep the humans alive and plugged in is: they are using some portion of every human's brain for their computational power. Sure, silicon computers are fast, but there's something in the wetware that the AI's require. IIRC, the machines only rose up after human/computer connectivity became widespread. So, maybe linking to our neurons gave the machines the abilities and will to take over, and they haven't found a good substitute for our grey matter.
Neo and crew believe the "battery" story because everyone has been deeply conditioned through the Matrix to not consider the other possibility. If they knew the machines were using brains to run their programs, it could be a weakness they could exploit in their war against the machines.
I know there are holes in this idea. For instance, why don't the 'home-grown' Zioners come to this same conclusion? Maybe the Agents' desire to wipe out Zion stems from a fear that they will figure this out, and use this info to destroy the AIs. Thoughts? Ideas?
Somehow I missed out on that point, I just assumed all of them would be on the web. Still, almost half the content for free is a good start, when they srr it sells well (which it will of course, being Matrix and all).
"There is more worth loving than we have strength to love." - Brian Jay Stanley
You haven't read 'Hyperion' (sp?) have you?
Hint 1: What is the one thing the bots are vulnerable to? EMP attack.
Question: Why haven't the humans succeded in just EMPing them to oblivion?
Hint 2: Humans are utterly transparent to EMP
And if the matrix authors don't pull this or a similar twist I'll almost completely despair of the lot of them.
(I'm saving complete despair for when James Camerons screenwriter screws up Alita with a mindless action film)
As for your holes, they're pluggable.
Zion wants to save the people trapped in the matrix (hell - they probably need the population).
Trouble is, they've got themselves the ultimate human shield to go through first.
Zion know damn well the only way to attack is from the inside. All they need, is someone to 'get with the program', and start changing the rules (a dollop of Diamond Age drummers here)
What I want to know is if Zion hooks its kids up with those headplugs or if the only soldiers they have in this war are the ones recruited from the Matrix.
Oh, and if you want an explanation for the nice Oracle lady, you need to watch 'Serial Experiments: Lain'
However, if I hear "human soul" or "love" or "midiclorians" near any important plot point I will kill someone.
Don't dare mod me up. Every time I can't be arsed to login, people mod me to 4 and it's getting on my nerves.
THE LESSER-KNOWN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES #8: LAIDBACK
This language was developed at the Marin County Center for T'ai Chi,
Mellowness and Computer Programming (now defunct), as an alternative to
the more intense atmosphere in nearby Silicon Valley.
The center was ideal for programmers who liked to soak in hot tubs while
they worked. Unfortunately few programmers could survive there because the
center outlawed Pizza and Coca-Cola in favor of Tofu and Perrier.
Many mourn the demise of LAIDBACK because of its reputation as a gentle and
non-threatening language since all error messages are in lower case. For
example, LAIDBACK responded to syntax errors with the message:
"i hate to bother you, but i just can't relate to that. can
you find the time to try it again?"
