Call for Papers: Chaos Communication Camp 2003
Aldert Hazenberg sent in this note about a Call for Papers: "Papers are being solicited for the second Camp of the Chaos Computer Club e.V., Germany, to be held near Berlin, Germany, on 7/8/9/10th August 2003. The Camp is intended to promote the interchange of technical, social and political ideas and concepts to find ways to make this world a little bit more friendly to intelligent beings."
1st post?!
Crazy liberal extravaganza!
Slashdot send many webservers into chaos all the time. Maybe the should attend... :P
1: Write free software.
2: ?
3: Go to Camp of the Chaos Computer Club to discuss technology, social and political matters.
4: Profit!
Chaotic is about the right adjective to describe the trajectory of the disk arms on their poor web server.

Cartman: Would you like those pants clean for $4.95?
A lot of the recommended topics seem to be security oriented... does that imply that intelligent people should hack systems for their advantage? Exactly what does this Chaos Computer Club group stand for?
As someone once said to Carl Segan, after his speach about searching for extraterastrial intelligance.

As of Postgres v6.2, time travel is no longer supported.
Sticking "chaos" into a name is so 1990's.

Not on this planet I fear. The human condition seems to be one of destroying ourselves. Prehaps the film Equilibrium got it right and prehaps we should all just stop feeling with drugs. Then again once people found feeling they wanted it.
Prehaps we are all doomed or we might just all grow up

Let's look at the facts about this seemingly innocuous meeting:
"Papers are being solicited for the second Camp of the Chaos Computer Club e.V., Germany, to be held near Berlin, Germany, on 7/8/9/10th August 2003."
'Camp of the Chaos Computer Club' can be reduced to the initialism 'CCCC'. You'll note it is 4-letters in length. The fact that 'NAZI' is also 4-letters in length strikes me as a bit too much of a coincident.
Just like 'HAL' in the movie 2001 was actually 'IBM' rolled back one letter, 'CCCC' is actually 'NAZI' if you roll the first 'C' forward 11 letters, the second 'C' back 2 letters, the third 'C' forward 23 letters and the last 'C' forward 6 letters.
11 - 2 + 23 + 6 = 28, i.e. 1928, the year the Nazi Party came to power in Germany.
And where does this so-called 'Computer Club' call home?
GERMANY!
The cat is out of the bag, chumps. We're onto you like hair on a gorilla.

You're trying too hard. Relax.
Press release from the CCC:
The US military threatend to invade our camp and free all surpressed script kiddies for hacktivism being a form of terrorism and supporting Osama bin Laden.
Wouldn't it be really hard to light, being metal and all?
I misread that as "Chaos Concentration Camp", and then I saw it was in Germany... That scared me for a bit...
"11 - 2 + 23 + 6 = 28, i.e. 1928"
(11 - 2) + (23 + 6) = 38
So that makes 9 + 29 = 38

After reading the posts above, I got this flashback to F15E Strike Eagle II, flying toward Germany with the secondary objective to "Destroy the terrorist camp at Berlin."
Right from their website's faq:
Remember also that the famous Blinkenlights were their celebration of the club's 20th anniversary.
and put on crazy robot sunglasses and wear clothes entirely made of tinfoil and dance to their crazy music back in the 80s. Helmut Kohl ist tot and stuff like that.
The CCC is actually more than 20 years old. Maybe you even saw their anniversary project. It had appearences in several music videos.
This question has come up enough times around here lately. Let's put an end to it, once and for all:
15) Which monsters and robots has Buckethead battled?
Buckethead is believed to have fought and defeated Bansheebot, Aquabot, Double Man and Tekadon D. He has also sparred with Slipdisc henchthings such as Centipede Woman, Broiler and Chickenhawk as well as the Haddonfield killer Michael "The Shape" Meyers.
The scheduled keynote speaker is Professor Chaos hailing from South Park, Colorado.

ignorance is bliss not an excuse
By Ian Burrell Media and Culture Correspondent
25 April 2003
Greg Dyke, director general of the BBC, attacked American television and radio networks for their "shocking" and "gung-ho" coverage of the Iraq conflict yesterday. He also issued a warning against US companies being allowed greater ownership of British media.
Mr Dyke said that changes to legislation proposed by the Government would allow American media companies to take a greater share of British television and radio, which could lead to a loss of impartiality in news coverage.
"We must ensure that we don't become Americanised," he said. Mr Dyke also accused the Government of trying to "manage public opinion" and "apply pressure" on the BBC.
In his first public comments since the war, Mr Dyke said America had "no news operation strong enough or brave enough to stand up against" the White House and Pentagon. He said: "Personally, I was shocked while in the United States by how unquestioning the broadcast news media was during this war."
Mr Dyke said that since the 11 September terrorist attacks, many American networks had "wrapped themselves in the American flag and swapped impartiality for patriotism".
He said: "I think compared to the United States we see impartiality as giving a range of views, including those critical of our own Government's position. I think in the United States, particularly since 11 September, that would be seen as unpatriotic." Mr Dyke said that on a recent visit to America he was "amazed by how many people just came up to me and said they were following the war on the BBC because they no longer trusted the American electronic news media". Mr Dyke reserved some of his strongest criticisms for Clear Channel, the largest operator of radio stations in America. The company is likely to be a beneficiary of government plans to open up ownership of commercial radio in Britain.
He said: "We were genuinely shocked when we discovered that the largest radio group in the US was using its airwaves to organise pro-war rallies. We are even more shocked to discover that the same group wants to become a big player in radio in the UK."
Mr Dyke attacked Fox News and CNN for what he described as "gung-ho" coverage.
In contrast, the BBC was an "800lb gorilla" that was capable of holding off the Government's attempts to interfere in editorial decisions, he said.
Is this the same Chaos from the early 90's? Does anyone know? IIRC they were based out of germany, and published a few "engineering" guides.
About that long, they've been around. Sheesh. As I recall they're government funded in Germany, sorta gives all their "haxors" a place to get something constructive done... to some extent. As I recall also part of their tradeoff was that they help out in cases of national crises or criminal hunts if recruited... but that's just rumors I recall... I don't speak/read enough german to read all that stuff.
:) Here they put 13 year old script kiddies in jail with spike the child molester and joe the violent mass murderer instead of teaching 13 year old SK proper computer ethics and skills and getting him into creative fun stuff instead of destructive stupid stuff... but then again, since when was the US gov't into anything OTHER than destructive stupid stuff??
In reality they're a club of hackers, crackers and slackers who got themselves a national club... mostly dedicated to informing the unwashed masses that YES computer security and awesome highest tech ideas are NOT just for geeks... we're just better at it than most. I do recall they WERE indeed supposedly funded by the German gov't.
Lets see the US do that. hah, that will be the day

Technically CCCP is fine, but if you draw the communist connection don't forget the Nazi's came to power there because the plutocrats weren't happy when Communism was voted for earlier and elected. The Nazi party was elected for its anti communist stance as I recall... they became more anti jewish as time went on, but originally their platform was supposedly anti communist, since the communists weren't very good for the German economy (or public view of it for that matter).
-DaedalusHKX
PS - I could be wrong but I recall from my 10 years ago of history that Germany was the first place where Communism was elected/took over office anywhere in the world.

In other news, the most vocal areas of the world seem to have problems themselves in allowing free speach and liberty to those they disagree with. Another observation is that certain very vocal people are of countries who are directly prospering through the direct and indirect support of murderous and tyranical regimes through arms sales and other tools of war that are known to be used against innocent people. By whoring themselves to anyone willing to pay they think that the inevitable fate that waits for those that support war and murder will somehow be avoided by empty and hypocritical rhetoric. Perhaps if they policed themselves and controlled their own governments first then they would be free to more acurately point their fingers at other countries.
SLASHDOT SUMMER CAMP
Hey Slashboteers! Are you finishing university? *STILL* unemployed after the dot com layoffs? Well, have we got the answer for you! Three full days of pony rides, coding and male bonding. Special Appearances by NAMBLA Grand Wizard Katz with his partner Wai Tu Yung.

You will notice that throughout the world, you had two types of people against the war in Iraq. Of these, the loudest focused on FUD and personal attacks, hypocritical attacks of very selective issues and basically just a smear campaign. The ones who focused on the mid to long term problems with such foreign policy focused on the facts at hand and included historical trends in their analysis. These people would say things like "It is not the US military's role to police the world" and would argue based on US constitutional limits and restrictions to foreign (and especially military) policy.
What brought people like Hitler into power and allowed him to spread his reign of terror and murder was that odd and totally illogical combination of apathy and mindless (lack of self thought) and violent lashing out and wanting to "do something." This angst was cunningly forged into a force that would ok (or just ignore) inhuman acts in the name of progress and personal glory. The enemy of this type of state is free thought and those who employ careful critical thought as such can lead to the realization that said state is self destroying and is in fact hypocritical of its own stated causes.
Such is the attitude of many now, to blindly lash out at things they clearly have not taken that hate energy and used to research the facts. It is nationalism plain and simple. Why adopt a critical and skeptical view of issues when you can simply unquestioningly swallow whole the rhetoric of certain loud organizations? After all, what is more important in issues: to rhyme and sound cute or to stress personal enlightenment and personal critical throught by first giving facts?
Heard on slashdot: What is so wrong about socialism?
Response: You mean besides the fact that it doesn't work?
Isn't the Chaos Computer Club one of the older existing hacker groups in the world, at least by the modern definition? I believe the Cult of the Dead Cow hacker group started quite a bit later than CCC.
The German Parliament stated that they have no expertise on this and proposed a member of the BSI (a sort of NCSC type organisation) and from the Chaos Computer Club. MS were unhappy with this. To be fair it would have been a problem for the CCC member too because of the problem of intellectual contamination with open source projects.
The fact that the German Parliament

Why is it that a conference billed as being near a major city worries me? Like, where is it actually? And is it really such a hole that you can't just say outright where it's being held?
Yes, I mean this seriously.
Scary.
"Other than them, most of them think..."
Other than the aforementioned foreigners and my former professors, most of the denizens of this land, natives or otherwise are a tad too brainwashed and go up in arms over any little thing without even thinking it through or asking for complete logical and damning proof before sending our kids to die or get poisoned (and die later, off the air so the prez doesn't take the fall, read assertation on DU vs conventional ammo)... but they never do. They just go nuts and pop another Budweiser while screaming Right Wing Bloody Murder To All Who Disagree which by the way will become the title to our new national anthem.

And that's about the long and short of it.
I cannot even begin to count the number of cute girls that stopped dating me because I used a computer.
We should have a talk about that.
CCC seems like the right place for such a social activity/talk.
