He did indeed visit and speak at the first Idlelo conference, held in South Africa in 2004. I was there, and saw him give his very entertaining Free Software speech, complete with halo.
Interestingly, Microsoft put up quite a presence there, holding symposiums about how they wanted to work with the Open Souce community. They even paid for a very nice barbecue and booze-up in a vineyard, where I was lucky enough to meet Stallman himself, only to make the faux pas of referring to 'Linux' rather than GNU/Linux.
A friend of mine was his minder for the week, showing him around... interesting experience apparently.
I did not RTFA, but I did read the summary in The Economist last week. As I read it, the explanation was that of the founder's effect that you mention, along with the tendancy of Ashkenazi Jews to marry only among their population. The idea was something like this:
- In the Middle Ages only intelligent Jews survive
- Conditions improve, but because of few Ashkenazi Jews marrying outside their communities, intelligence genes are retained
- However, this lack of genetic diversity serves not only to maintain intelligence but also to make the population more liable to the various diseases mentioned

Oh, the evil of the French keyboard. How can it be logical in any language to use the shift key to get a full stop?
We don't want kids getting drunk and turning into alcoholics
When I was 13 (I'm British, legal drinking age is 18) we did a school exchange to Belgium and were very excited by the fact that we could buy beer anywhere we wanted. Except, the Belgian kids looked at us oddly whenever we ordered beer with lunch - once the novelty/rule-breaking was gone, so was the attraction.
Ever see American kids in Tijuana? Tell me again how prohibition discourages alcoholism...
Thats the point, of course. This guy probably had military training of some sort, like my grandfather. When you are drilled in something so hard, you aren't going to lose it. On the other hand, very few teenage girls are going to be prepared to go through RAF Wireless Operator training in order to send messages to their friends.
Because it provided easily organised, quick downloads at a reasonable price. No searching on different networks, getting bad files, messing around trying to get a whole album altogether.
It was also a way to get music at a reasonable price.
AllOfMP3 may get taken down, but ultimately their business model will prevail.
Your analogy doesn't work, because most people working in IT aren't working at Microsoft or Oracle or Borland. Employees of those companies are the equivalent of GM or Ford executives.
If cars were available for free, there would be an increased market for driving instructors, mechanics, car modders, drivers and so on. Thus, although jobs in the 'manufacturing' sector would go, far more would be created in the 'service' sector.
The article isn't about translation software like Bablefish or whatever. It is software used to manage different versions of speeches translated by humans.
they don't need college. They need roads, they need medical care, they need clean drinking water, they need immunizations, they need family planning, they need assistance with sustainable farming techniques and they need primary education.
Isn't it generally preferable for civil engineers, doctors, agriculture experts and teachers to have been to college?
Or were you assuming that only those from the developed world could do such jobs, making sure that poor countries stay dependent on aid forever?
Exactly, Free really is great. I work for a *large* organisation, and at one stage I had more bandwith at home than there was for everyone at work.
Go free...
I used to find that if I played Tetris long enough I could play it in my head. Random blocks dropping and everything, all created by whatever pattern had been imprinted on my mind.
Who needed a Gameboy? Enough time with Tetris on the ZX Spectrum and you could still play anywhere, plus the batteries never ran out!
He was lucky. I was in pretty much the same situation in San Diego, except they refused to serve me. Managed to order the food over the speaker, walked round to the window to get it... and they said they were not allowed to serve pedestrians.
Once managed to do a drive-thru on my bicycle though, so I don't know where they draw the line.
For increasing numbers of people (especially here in Europe) the primary function is text messages. Only as a last resort do you actually call somebody.
He isn't a threat, and the system didn't treat him as once. What has he proved?

Yep, and my iPod HD failed as soon as the warranty was up.
Arizona Bay!
Discussing democracy is illegal on MSN? Figures...

And interestingly, they appear to have replaced their website content team with this script. Respect!
US Presidential elections being influenced by foreign countries? Dude, that isn't what you should be afraid of.. that what you need
I'd say its actually far more offensive, meaning f*** o** rather than the more polite 'up yours'.
It was also a way to get music at a reasonable price.

I always suspected that they were lying, and really just knocked on the door of everyone without a TV.
Modded +1, Read the Friendly Article and then summarised it.

20 year old (hot?) girl?
Hmm, wonder why the rentacops might chose her for a random search/flirting opportunity?
This isn't a DJB class is it?
Potential new meme for any ridiculous/unlikely/unfair demand?

The best joke I have ever seen on Slashdot. I salute you, sir.
