Doom 3 Web Site Now Operational

thrash242 writes "After much re-re-re-rechecking, the official Doom 3 site finally has some real content, instead of just 'Coming soon' - it also confirms the August 3rd ship date. Woohoo!"

      id wanted to do a remake of the original DooM with new technology, and part of the charm of the original DooM was its completely nonsense storyline: you get teleported to hell, kill kill kill.

      Without this, it wouldn't be DooM anymore, it would be Daikatana or some other shit like that, leave DOOM ALONE, YOU NOOOOOB! :)

      Ahhh for the ones who don't know their history. This is the same story as the original Doom, which predates Half Life by a number of years. You were probably not one of the individuals playing Doom of a low end 486 in the dark and jumping out of your skin when something came around the corner. Personally, I have been awaiting this title patiently for quite sometime. No game since has scared me out of whits like the original Doom did. Here's to hoping Caramack and company did the same thing with this one.

      Yes it will be out after the Windows version. The gaming market is ruled by Windows. But it will sure come.
      It didn't take so long for the linux clients of Q1, Q2, Q3, RtCW, RtCW:ET to come out after the windows releases and they were surely released, and so will Doom3. Not only that, but the Q1 and Q2 complete source code was also released under the GPL.
      Would you rather they completely ignore the other systems, like most game companies?
      It's very good that there's a pretty huge player in the 3D gaming world that actually states that the linux/mac versions are planned and not just "if we will feel like it, we'll see if we can hack up some linux version".

    I went through the whole thing last night and they did a great job on it! The site is really creepy, setting the mood by going full screen flash mode. The music and the information listed there is all quite well put together and interesting. Did 2design do that site? Felt like his work, IMHO.

    I'm still looking for the skip intro button. It's supposed to be a website. If ID want to relase a movie trailer they could give us a .torrent to an MPEG. The website on the other hand should - quickly and concisely - let us know where we can buy it, when we can buy it, how much for and what we need to play it.

      ...the stupid masses who (a) are stupid and thus are willing to dig through an all-Flash website and probably to put down their cash for a game on the basis of how cool it looks, and (b) are a mass, which means there's a lot of them.

      Sorry, but I think their marketers are probably doing their job...

      You don't really understand. (a) It's not just the geek standard-loving flash-hating crowd that leaves such sites in dusgust. It's your average Joe Shmoe that opens something on his 33.6 dial-up connection, waits a bit, doesn't see anything informative, looks around for clues, doesn't find them and says "fuck it". Ask anyone who had the tiniest bit of usability testing experience. The stupid masses are not stupid when it comes to being forced to do unfunny things. (b) When someone comes to doom3.com they already got the image. They are interested, but nothing more - just interested. No matter how good Doom3 is it's just a game most people can live without. And there are many games just as good as Doom3 is. If id wants to sell as many copies as they want, they should cater to their customers, not attempt to force them to "buy an image". They don't want to buy an image, they wanted to buy a game, but no more, thank you very much.

      If this is their idea of doing their job, then I would fire them. Its a few weeks till launch and all we have on the official website, is 3 wallpapers, some screenshots and a single demo movie (quite pretty), and a pre-order link.

      Now is the time that D3 should be getting hyped, and being shoved down out throats at every opportunity. The official website should be a showcase for the game, getting us revved up and excited for its release, giving us the lowdown on everything that anyone would wan't to know. It certainly doesn't live up to my exepectations on what an official website should be.

      Perhaps, they are relying on other websites to do their job for them, or are just trading on the id and Doom 3 name knowing that its just going to be selling like hotcakes anyway. But at the end of the day, at this point in D3 development I think the website should be more than this.

      The official website should be a showcase for the game, getting us revved up and excited for its release, giving us the lowdown on everything that anyone would wan't to know.

      A potential example of that - Bungie Studios' site.

      Love them or loathe them, Bungie seem pretty good at that PR thing. Id communicate through occasional updates on their finger service, Valve through emails and posts on other people's forums, and leave their own sites as unsullied, unused shop windows with a few smatterings of out-of-date news and screenshots.

      Well, the point of the story is that there now *more* than that on the site now.

      For certain games or movies, sometimes having too much info available isn't a good thing. It keeps things suspenseful to keep things somewhat quiet. I wouldn't want to see info about every weapon, every enemy, all the bosses, all the levels, etc. It would ruin the mystery and fear that's supposed to go along with this game.

    Is it...

    From September's PC Gamer issue, they have the system requirements as:
    Minimum:
    P4 1.5Ghz CPU (or equivalent).
    384MB of RAM.
    64MB graphics card.

    Lowest supported GPU is a Geforce 4 MX (worse than Geforce 3).
    Supported cards:
    GF 4 MX.
    GF 3.
    GF 4.
    GF FX (and higher).
    Radeon 8500s, 9000s and higher.

    They themselves recommend:
    2Ghz CPU.
    512MB RAM.
    Radeon 9800.
    5-channel sound card and speakers.

    I hate to be the one to mention it (OK, no I don't), but still no mention of when it'll be available for Mac? Or, more importantly, what the system requirements for Macs might be? Ah well, I guess I shouldn't complain, they don't mention Linux anywhere either but we know it'll be available right away for Linux, so it'll probably be available right away for Mac too. Ha.

    The gates of hell are indeed open! I think the creator of the midi-tune-playing-in-the-background site escaped from the bowels of hell to create that monstrosity.

    Never mind the minimum-spec for the game, what the hell is the mininum spec for displaying that site? :)

    PS: It doesn't render correctly with mozilla-firefox and version 7 of the flash for linux player.

      Yeah...the first screen looks fine, but if I click "enter the flash site", all I get is an empty black sidebar on the left and a large blank white section on the right.

      Works in Konqueror, though.

    No, by posting something un-funny and un-interesting, you broke the code of the AC. For years, AC has been known as the go-to-guy on slashdot, for well rounded insights and side splitting jokes. On this day, you failed not only yourself but the entire AC community as well.     works great for everything else though ... it'll probably play doom3 ok on lesser graphic detail, and it'll be the first time i booted into windows in 3 years.

    According to Todd Hollenshead's plan file : Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version.     I remember setting up a 14.4k modem duel back in the day when online fps was mano a mano ('92-'93??). I'll never forget how cool it was getting the connection to finally take and there we were, two guys on the opposite side of town hunting each other down in the hallowed halls of Doom. It blew my dad's mind - he had no idea such a thing was possible with his computer... That game will always have a special place in this geek's heart... Bring on Doom III!

    Um, Sorry. Anyway anyone trying to run Doom 3 on a GF 4 MX is going to be pretty unhappy with the results. Of course that doesn't keep the idiots from PC Gamer stating that "So long as you have a GeForce 4MX card, you should be able to play Doom 3 with many of its bells and whistles at a decent clip." Sure, and there are WMD in Iraq...

    I can't wait till Doom 3 goes retail and the Id forums are overloaded with users running 2.0GHz Celerons with Geforce 4mx's asking why they can't run it at anything other then 640x480 with everything turned off or set to low.

    ID has stated that the focus is definately on the single player experience, but there is a multiplayer component. The first tournament will be held at QuakeCon. =)

    For those of you using ECN be reminded that the website is a ECN blackhole[1] and will not load if you don't disable ECN or strip off the ECN bits from the header.

    For you Linux-users, it can easily be done with "iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -d 208.50.55.160 -j ECN --ecn-tcp-remove".

    If it wasn't a Doom game that I've been extremely excited about for over a year to get my hands on, I'd wait to play the demo.

    Instead, I'm going to get to Electronics Boutique (where I have it preordered) bright and early so I can get it ASAP and giggle like a insane schoolgirl the whole way home, anticipating the demon-killing awesomeness that I will soon experience.

    So, I guess, hardcore Doom fans buy *this* game without playing the demo. I haven't been disappointed by an id game yet, after all.
