Doom 3 Web Site Now Operational

Not April 1, I see...
Congratulations ID software, now I can remove this gb-sized beta and replace it with a multi-gb-sized release!

and it wants its story back
The demo isn't out yet.
Just a new flash demo
Damn - I wanted to see monster guides, mapedit tutes, system specs, etc...
Oh, well - I'm happy to wait for this game, should be really good.
You can't expect to wield supreme executive power, just because some watery tart threw a sword at you
"It confirms the August 3rd ship date. Woohoo!"
That just confirms that I'm pre-ordering it insted of HL 2. THANK YOU id!!
I went through the whole thing last night and they did a great job on it! The site is really creepy, setting the mood by going full screen flash mode. The music and the information listed there is all quite well put together and interesting. Did 2design do that site? Felt like his work, IMHO.
The dangers of knowledge trigger emotional distress in human beings.
Shouldn't that be August 5th?
I mean I'm not that good with dates usually, but it is my birthday date.
Guess I'm the only one who has this set as their wallpaper in XP?

Of course, I found it thanks to [H]
..to upgrade the graphics cards!

I'm still looking for the skip intro button. It's supposed to be a website. If ID want to relase a movie trailer they could give us a .torrent to an MPEG. The website on the other hand should - quickly and concisely - let us know where we can buy it, when we can buy it, how much for and what we need to play it.
Direct link to the large trailer, for those who don't have Quicktime installed.
what the fuck, only 800x600 and 1024x768. what the hell is this.
So what's the real story on the system reqs ?
Is it...
From September's PC Gamer issue, they have the system requirements as:
Minimum:
P4 1.5Ghz CPU (or equivalent).
384MB of RAM.
64MB graphics card.
Lowest supported GPU is a Geforce 4 MX (worse than Geforce 3).
Supported cards:
GF 4 MX.
GF 3.
GF 4.
GF FX (and higher).
Radeon 8500s, 9000s and higher.
They themselves recommend:
2Ghz CPU.
512MB RAM.
Radeon 9800.
5-channel sound card and speakers.
"Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech."--Benjamin Franklin
I hate to be the one to mention it (OK, no I don't), but still no mention of when it'll be available for Mac? Or, more importantly, what the system requirements for Macs might be? Ah well, I guess I shouldn't complain, they don't mention Linux anywhere either but we know it'll be available right away for Linux, so it'll probably be available right away for Mac too. Ha.
Sure you did, you non-real Doom fan, you.
In case you haven't seen it, there's a video of the G4 Tech TV show featuring Doom 3 ingame footage. Plasma Gun, BFG, Lost Soul, Reveant...

The gates of hell are indeed open! I think the creator of the midi-tune-playing-in-the-background site escaped from the bowels of hell to create that monstrosity.
:)
Never mind the minimum-spec for the game, what the hell is the mininum spec for displaying that site?
PS: It doesn't render correctly with mozilla-firefox and version 7 of the flash for linux player.
Maybe it's Slashdotted. All I get is a full screen window with a white background and black area down the side. No text, pictures, or animations.
Hmm, in Firefox on XP I seem to remember a little red X in the top right hand corner. I clicked it and voila! the site went away. I thought hmmm, maybe in other browsers? So I tried it in Safari on my Mac and no little red X but I had a little red dot on the top left. A little command+W and the site was gone. Perplexed I booted into FC2 and tried Mozill and once again was presented with an X to close the window thus dismissing the site. So, I'm a little perplexed as to what how you arrived at your little problem? So far the site has stood up to being /.'d quite well. Of course it is Sunday morning...
...null-productivity week (a day won't cut it). With HL2, coming out as well, everyone's going to be calling in sick so productivity will be negligent. They might as well acknowledge it and be done with it.
No, by posting something un-funny and un-interesting, you broke the code of the AC. For years, AC has been known as the go-to-guy on slashdot, for well rounded insights and side splitting jokes. On this day, you failed not only yourself but the entire AC community as well. That kind of shame cannot be carried lightly but must instead be met with the humble acceptance that can only be shown through ritual disembowelment. Remember, you do it not for yourself, but for the honor of ACs everywhere!
Yes. It's called the first site you enter (http://www.doom3.com). You can browse through the screenshots, trailers, and game information without even clicking that "Enter Flash Site" link.
"Instant gratification takes too long." - Carrie Fisher
well in IE it takes over full screen...and if you take 1 second to look at the interface you see the text that says EXIT in the top right. I still find fullscreen takeovers annoying, thank god firefox doesn't allow it.
...did you not fully comprehend? They will ship it when it's done and fully tested. Have you not read the original "We've gone gold!" message?
I am NaN
While I knew the site had been updated a while ago, the confirmation of the ship date is new news. This means a Doom 3 Lan party for my birthday on Aug. 19th.
:D
All are invited
DarkMantle I been bored, so I started a blog.
Dehacked is going to work, right? Don't tell me I've been holding on to WinTex for nothing.
Did anyone else watch the flash page loading screen tick up to 100% and think they were playing diablo?
screenshots | desktops | preorder | trailer
On my Windows XP with internet explorer it only creates a maximized window over, no full screen. Alt-Tab and the close button etc are still there, and you can move the window. I don't see the problem.
OK, I see the problem. I'm on my laptop, and with the screen angle and the fact that the text is very dim, along with some bright morning light in the room, I couldn't see it. When I tipped my screen, I finally saw it. Gah. I hate dim text. But I do have to take back my criticism, heh.
Sometimes it's best to just let stupid people be stupid.
Can't wait for this game.
Looks like doom 3 will make a shit load by releasing it before hl2.
what i want to know is if hl2 can release it on the same date..? highly unlikely.
The AC probably meant the leaked alpha [torrent]
Trent backed out last year just before the summer. He said he was tired of pissing around waiting for Id's famous "when it's done" crap. Says as much on the NiN site.
Those GNAA posts are funny and insightful?
Too bad the flashcrap-part is the only content actually updated on the site, Mr. Smart.
Their flash looks like crap on my system and as I usually get to see far too many ads and commercials working "correctly" here, I seriously doubt it's my machine that is to blame.
The flash screen is misaligned on my screen, showing only the lower half of it, thereby missing most of the buttons and texts. Sound and flashy-flashy is still there but who cares if I can't fucking read anything there.
Whatever, just call it "users fault", but I won't buy Doom3 anyway.
The multiplayer is hardly more than a joke and playing against a computer-controlled enemy was boring long before always-on DSL and Cable, but now it's just laughable. Name one huge success for a singleplayer-only game in the last 3-4 years and you'll see the pattern. These were Max Payne, FarCry, Hitman, Splinter Cell and were all atmospheric-esoteric-adventurous egoshooters. And Doom3 is gonna break *records* eh? In what, genre repetition?
I'm waiting for a convergence of realistic tactical shooters (aka America's Army), "multi-role-combat"-games (Battlefield 42 & nam), a strategic commanding interface (aka C&C series, only you're guiding the human players so they don't lose the goal in useless deathmatches) and all that inside a MMORPG world. Real combat, real-time, real strategic, "worldwide", always-on and interdependent - I'd even buy subscriptions for that and no I'm not retarded enough to consider joining the US Army anytime soon. "War is evil, but the sound is cool!" - who says online roleplaying games must always stay on the beaten meme of bows, arrows & magic. Who says we can't buy tanks, helicopters & armaments instead of castles, platemails, longswords and battle horses?
Ok, so we're making this game-equivelent of an extremely hyped, anticipated sequel and graphics masterpiece. Let's give people wallpapers, and make the "big" option 1024x768! Lame.
Athlon 1200
... it'll probably play doom3 ok on lesser graphic detail, and it'll be the first time i booted into windows in 3 years.
512MB RAM
ATI 9800 / 128MB
works great for everything else though
Have you tried World War 2 online? It got mixed reviews when it came out, but it's supposed to be a lot better now.
As for Doom3, well it's supposed to be scary - but really I think the big hype is more a resuly of Carmack's new engine - Quake 3 is STILL being used in major games today (Call of Duty) so Doom 3 promises to make some pretty advances for 3rd party licensors in the future.
Err, to clarify the "game-equivelent" part, I was trying to compare it to a hollywood blockbuster, but somehow the simile got lost in the translation from brain to keyboard. *headdesk*
It's Big Fucking Gun. Why are people afraid of using "Fuck"? Particulary in the US?
Yes ... I suppose the text was not the only thing that could be considered dim.
Did you know you can fertilize your lawn with used motor oil?
According to Todd Hollenshead's plan file : Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains "when it's done", but I can confirm that it's definitely coming. Here's a link to the plan at Blues http://www.bluesnews.com/plans/6/
The website for the United Areospace Corprotation has also gone live. All it is doing right now is counting down. It shows about 15 days left.
Architectural plans are like computer source code with a couple of differences: You only compile once.
I remember setting up a 14.4k modem duel back in the day when online fps was mano a mano ('92-'93??). I'll never forget how cool it was getting the connection to finally take and there we were, two guys on the opposite side of town hunting each other down in the hallowed halls of Doom. It blew my dad's mind - he had no idea such a thing was possible with his computer... That game will always have a special place in this geek's heart... Bring on Doom III!
Not only does God definitely play dice, but He sometimes confuses us by throwing them where they can't be seen. -Hawking
Quake 3 had a multi-processor mode that could be enabled on the command line. Will Doom 3 have that?
When are we finally gonna get games that can take advantage of my dual-Xeon workstation?
Anyone who loves or hates any language, platform, or manufacturer, doesn't know what they're talking about.
SMALL [12.6 MB] http://akamai.doom3.com/video/trailer_small.mov
L ARGE [about 40 MB] http://akamai.doom3.com/video/trailer_large.mov
I don't think we can slashdot akamai, but that quake.de link is pretty toasted at the moment, heh...
I actually have not seen this yet (posting from 56K here) so I'm not sure what this trailer is and how it compares to the other file...

This first Doom 3 tourney will be held in Dallas August 7th-8th. See you there.
ignorance is bliss. googlefiberatx.com
I heard that Id is going to make a Linux version so you won't have to boot into Windows all the time
With these Load times for each section of the page it appears as if it is necessary to upgrade for the website alone.
Anyone else start laughing when you heard the little "Arrr Arrr" echo at the end of the demo? Just like the Terrance and Phillip movie preview for "Asses of Fire 2".
No, Natural Selection is doing the job.
You missed the point and lost the plot.
A slashdotting - you get the stick first and then the carrot !
and it'll be the first time i booted into windows in 3 years.
:)
Make sure you remember to update your virus definitions and security patches, otherwise you'll experience something I like to call a nasty surprise.
This space intentionally left blank.
"Whatever, just call it "users fault", but I won't buy Doom3 anyway."
Then why complain? Just stop there...
And I guess you haven't really looked at either of the sites, eh? Or any of the game information where it states that Doom 3 will have multiplayer action via Internet or LAN? Might want to consider checking into it just a little bit before you bash it...
"Instant gratification takes too long." - Carrie Fisher
LOL. I think somebody modded this informative instead of funny ;-)
And Doom3 is gonna break *records* eh? In what, genre repetition?
...
all dooms and quakes are id graphics engines demos. tahts all. in doom3 again we must search stupid keys for stupid doors blah blah... and this time there will be even STORYLINE! and now with 1000x times more scaryer polygons!
really interesting games will come later (just like with doom and quake). on doom3 engine
Doom got enough shit for all the blood and guts; I guess ID figured they didn't want the additional headache of being accused of profanity as well. ;-)
I believe Doom 3 is a one-player game only.
Laugh...
Fucking a fat girl is like riding a scooter... it's fun 'til someone sees you.
With all the hype surrounding the game, I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to even get my hands on a copy, (why can't id offer ISO downloads?). I'm wondering which of you /.-ers are going to pre-order, because I have a feeling everyone's inventory is going to be wiped-out!

Then again, I'm using Lynx as my browser....
What's the HUD going to look like for this one. The trailer seems to not want to load on my machine. I hope it has the original Doom mug shot for your health. I was sad when ID took that out of Quake II.
I are winner
Um, Sorry. Anyway anyone trying to run Doom 3 on a GF 4 MX is going to be pretty unhappy with the results. Of course that doesn't keep the idiots from PC Gamer stating that "So long as you have a GeForce 4MX card, you should be able to play Doom 3 with many of its bells and whistles at a decent clip." Sure, and there are WMD in Iraq...
I can't wait till Doom 3 goes retail and the Id forums are overloaded with users running 2.0GHz Celerons with Geforce 4mx's asking why they can't run it at anything other then 640x480 with everything turned off or set to low.
If you wanna get rich, you know that payback is a bitch
Uh, do you have a source for this or are you just making it up?
Here's a torrent for that great G4TechTV Interview. Lots of in-game footage: http://www.filerush.com/torrents/doom3g_4.avi.torr ent
ID has stated that the focus is definately on the single player experience, but there is a multiplayer component. The first tournament will be held at QuakeCon. =)
I, for one, am using this as an oppurtunity to replace my *crappy* video card.
Duct tape, XML, democracy: Not doing the job? Use more.
Since when is 1024x768 considered large? IMO that's the smallest they should offer. Especially for a gaming crowd, you'd think 1600x1200 would be the standard large size.
some of us have manners
I guess the old pre-release shareware version isn't around anymore. Definatly getting the game, but I feel somewhat let down there isn't a shareware version released like the original.

it will ship with a Linux version so there is no need to resort to that... unless of course your other OS is actually still BeOS.

Does that clip of the intro soundtrack sound like TOOL/Perfect Circle to anyone else. I thought Trent Reznor did the soundtrack.

here.
In case you missed it, every game that id has made since the original Quake, has had the demo come out AFTER the full version.
I think Doom was a simul-release, and Quake demo came out only a few days before the full..
Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

For those of you using ECN be reminded that the website is a ECN blackhole[1] and will not load if you don't disable ECN or strip off the ECN bits from the header.
For you Linux-users, it can easily be done with "iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -d 208.50.55.160 -j ECN --ecn-tcp-remove".

You look like a million dollars. All green and wrinkled.
Or just do what you do with everything else (phone, parents, etc) when playing the game = simply disconnect them.
The only virus you can get that way is PEBCAK.

The multiplayer component (IIRC, the maps) have been created by Splashdamage (www.splashdamage.com) : The people who allready brought us the great (free) game, Enemy Territory.
Those aren't screenshots, those are postage stamps!
The images are only 474x373 pixels, which is far from awe-inspiring on my 1600x1200 19" CRT. I'd imagine that's not the reaction that the marketing folks were looking for.
Where did they hire these web designers from? 1995? The whole website seems like it was designed only to be viewed on a 640x480 15" monitor.

If it wasn't a Doom game that I've been extremely excited about for over a year to get my hands on, I'd wait to play the demo.
Instead, I'm going to get to Electronics Boutique (where I have it preordered) bright and early so I can get it ASAP and giggle like a insane schoolgirl the whole way home, anticipating the demon-killing awesomeness that I will soon experience.
So, I guess, hardcore Doom fans buy *this* game without playing the demo. I haven't been disappointed by an id game yet, after all.
From an interview on GameSpy:2 7p1.html

"DOOM 3 multiplayer is based around 4 players; however, internally it is not limited to that. Mod teams will be able to support more."
4 players? Won't be wasting much time on that unless someone makes an awesome multiplayer mod for it. The only thing that made Doom 2 fun was multiplayer on a LAN, but going back to 4 players with some games now supporting 150 is out of the question for me.

No, they just wanted to prep you for the resolution that you're going to have to run the game in.
I'd rather do that with my GF, got one of those too?
Oh you have u say ?
Nahhh... I don't believe it, you're fibbing. You're a typical and dedicated wanker. The anal type too, yup - a regular gutprobing snotjob is what you are.
Go on - try it again - call me something more.

Funny, I was thinking something similar, except that playing against an online enemy was annoying long before always-on DSL and Cable, but now it's just laughable.
Different people have different video game interests. I don't feel like dealing with a bunch of annoying people that either cheat, or claim I cheat, complain when I win, or complain when I lose. Even though I play some multiplayer with people I know at work, my main interest is in the single player games, some of the better ones being the ones that you listed, like Max Payne, FarCry, etc. These games seem to be making money, so there must be others that like them too.
Anyone notice that it was all flash (pun intended) and no substance? Does anyone know the system requirements?

From your own link Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. I'm pretty sure the way this works is you buy and install the regular Windows version and run it with the help of the Linux binaries. I remember reading something about UT2K4 being done like that, but I could be wrong I don't buy games (or play them really). The linux binaries might let you install the game itself or you might be able to use Wine. All and this means that there should be no need to reboot to Windows if you are willing to wait a bit for the Linux binaries to come out.... and considering you probably won't get your hands on the first batch that omes out this should be no problem.
Your CPU is not doing anything else, at least do something.
There is a rumor and i think id did everything but confirm it the D3 is only going to support 8 players max in the multiplayer
