Resident Evil 5 Details
1up.com has some tidbits about the fifth Resident Evil title, which looks to be slated for the 360 and PS3. From the article: "What is surprising, however, is the game's bright atmosphere, a stark contrast to the dark, dreary environments usually found in Resident Evil games. There's even one screen shot where a blaring sun high up in the sky blocks the camera's view of several approaching enemies who happen to look suspiciously like zombies. Could we be seeing a return to classic form this time? Time will tell."
But since this is going to be on the 360 and PS3, but NOT the Revolution, is that not a sign that Revolution is even further behind in development than you would otherwise think?
Also looks good for Xbox360 - there have been RE games for PC, DC, Saturn, PS, PS2, N64, and even Mobile platforms, but this would be the first for Xbox.
I wanted this on the cube again. I don't want to spend $500 for a PS3 to play this.
Right now no 3rd party developers (except Square) have anounced any games for the Revolution. I think Nintendo is not alowing any anouncements untill after SpaceWorld.
I wish Nintendo would let 3rd party groups start announcing games. Keeping all this info hushed is really starting to get me pissed off. Its like Hey look at all the games I can get on the PS3 and Xbox360. But what does Nintendo have announced? NES, SNES and N64 games -_-x

~Bommers, Why did it have to be Bommers!?!
Resident Evil 4 was the best RE game ev4rr.. nothing will ever top it.
Does this remind anyone of a scene from Family Guy's A Picture is Worth 1,000 Bucks?
(Shift to scene of Stephen King talking to his publisher.)
Stewie: How deliciously evil looking! It's like something out of Stephen King!
Stephen King: Okay. For my 307th book...this couple is attacked by a...lamp monster! Raaaah!
Executive: You're not even trying anymore, are you?
Stephen King: Rah! Raaaaaaah!
Executive: (Sighs in resignation.) When can I have it?
Unlike Sony or Microsoft, Nintendo would be in a terible position to announce too many details about their next generation system at this point in time. From now until the end of the year Nintendo is publishing the following games on exsisting hardware:

Resident Evil 0, 1 and 4 almost made me buy the cube. I am glad I will not have to get any N-based consoles to play this. There doesn't seem to be many quality software titles for Nintendo lately (namely, last three consoles).

After reading the comments of that story at 1up.com, I just lost hope for all of humanity.
Thanks a lot.
Would you kindly mod me +1 insightful?
...happen to look suspiciously like zombies
zombies! in resident evil?
Impossible!
Where are the goombas?
Wow! I can't wait to pick up the latest Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, and Pokemon games!
Maybe you are right, but maybe you are just on denial. That was a press announcement, they Cant LIE in those because they would lose their credibility to the media and thats BAD. If it were going to come out for revolution and they didnt want people to know they would have said something vague as "Coming for some next generation consoles" or along those lines. If they excluded Revolution, then is not coming on revolution, at least not at this time.
Go ahead MOD my day!
More opinions here
...this is a sequel to RE4? No one from the RE4 team is actually working on it. It is on every console except Nintendo's. And from the screenshots it appears it has nothing to do with the cliffhanger ending to RE4. And it takes place during the daytime. I have never been a fan of the Onimusha titles, they have stuck too closely to video game canon; what I liked about RE4 was how many traditional "game rules" it broke. You were susceptible to things that many humans are; for example, chainsaws. In most games you would just lose a couple health points, not get decapitated immediately.
Resident Evil 4 was not a hit because it was a Resident Evil game. Resident Evil 4 was a hit precisely because it WASN'T a Resident Evil game. However, Onimusha has always felt like a RE: The Lamer Samurai Edition.
Then again, maybe a new team will be able to bring as many new ideas to the table as the last one.
Obviously this is VERY early in the game (no pun intended) to be calling out judgements already, but the outlook isn't overly positive at this point.
One last thought; I don't blame Capcom at all for not going exclusive with Nintendo again. I am a self-proclaimed Nintendo fanboi, and I freely admit that they REALLY messed up on RE4. This was their chance to really bump up their mature image; I was dying to see exclusive RE4 gamecube packs, for $129.99, and a nice big 'M' rating right on the box. They could have moved a lot of systems and introduced a lot of people to the best game since Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. If I just made a masterpiece like RE4 and watched it go on to fairly lackluster sales in exclusivity, I would be pretty sad, and looking for other options.
(However, to be fair, Capcom did TRY to port RE4 to the PS2, and they couldn't do it, too many corners would have been cut.)
The stench of insecure xbox and nintendo fanboys there is overwhelming.
Typical 1up.com story:
Nintendo is teh ghey!!!

If im going to risk my life killing zombies for the good of the earth you better not make me pay for ammo as well.
There is truth in humor.
I realize that you're trying to make a joke, but your comment isn't really based on reality. 4 of the upcomming games on the Gamecube have Mario in their title; 1 (Mario Party 7) is based on an exsisting series of games, 2 (Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Strikers) are brand new games that use the Mario name to symbolize their goofy and arcady playstyle, and 1 (Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix) is the only DDR game on the Gamecube [which makes it unique]. On the other hand Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is both the ONLY Pokemon RPG game released on any home console and is the second Pokemon game (of any form) released on the Gamecube.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the most anticipated game on any console this year, and quite possibly the most anticipated game of the entire generation. The remaining games (Geist, Battalion Wars, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Chibi-Robo, and Odama) are all unique games that have never been done on the Gamecube.
I think that 1 company producing 2 sequels, 3 games based on a licenced character (that are still new games), and 6 games that are ether brand new games or are the first of their series on this platform, for 1 platform in less than half a year is pretty good. Many companies talk about how inovative they are when they only produce 1 or 2 unique games in a year.
This is Capcom we are speaking of, the same company who was going to make RE4 a GameCube exclusive then went back on their word.
There is nothing stopping them from going back on their word with RE5 and releasing it on the Revolution.
Simple! Because who would buy a game on a system with people like THIS!
How about
Resident Evil: How to beat a dead horse
Resident Evil: Hot having to stand while you shoot action
Resident Evil: I get it they are fucking zombies
-Dipster
all this says to me, is that ps and xbox users not only had to wait for a new version, but also a new platform revision, to equal the quality of what we enjoyed from RE4 on the game cube.
Rock on sony and ms.
This idiot is just trolling. "There are no good games for the last 3 Nintendo consoles". I'm so sure.
Its odd, up until Resident Evil became Gamecube exclusive (well sort of) most of the Resident Evil games were mostly pretty average games; they had good graphics for their time but pretty clunky controls, simple puzzles, and a convoluted story line. With the remake of Resident Evil 1, and the release of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 4 it has some how became a central gaming title. Having played all of them all the way through I can honestly say that, except for Resident Evil 4, they were entertaining games but they were far from the greatest games ever produced.
I know everyone likes to blame Nintendo for how poor this franchise sold on the gamecube, after all Resident Evil 0,1,4 only sold over a Million copies world wide each; but it wasn't Nintendo's fault that these games sold poorly. Capcom's biggest problem with these games is that the majority of users give up (pretty early on) because of how frustrating the controls are. The Resident Evil games sold poorly because the casual gamer who was introduced to them (probably on the Playstation, Dreamcast or N64) avoided them like the plague because of the control dynamics; which is really a shame because Resident Evil 4 actually fixed most of the problems with its new play style.
What these games have shown is that 'You can shear a sheep as many times as you want but you can only skin it once'. Regardless of whether it ends up on the Revolution or not Resident Evil 5 will probably continue to sell poorly because people will think that it has a really clumsy play style.
so
long.
Fuck yeah!!!

Why is it that when you believe something it's an opinion, but when I believe something it's a manifesto?
I think Nintendo is not alowing any anouncements untill after SpaceWorld.
What Space World? Nintendo, AFAIK, has not announced any Space World for 2005, and it's already July.
This is what IGN wrote on May 19, two months ago:
"Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto reiterated Kaplan's comments in a recent interview, saying that more Revolution information would be forthcoming sooner rather than later, and that a new Space World was under consideration."
That was two months ago. "Sooner rather than later" is probably pretty much passed by now, and it's pretty clear that it's too late to organize a Space World show on such short notice at this point. Space World is traditionally held in August, either just before or just after Obon. They could hold it at a different time of year but that would dilute its effectiveness - I mean there are reasons why they hold it in August vs., say, November (it's cold in Tokyo! And kids are in school) or December (too late for Christmas) or January or February or March. The window for this year is probably already closed; next spring is probably the earliest they could organize and put on such a large-scale show.
I'm done being a Nintendo apologist (I used to be); I don't see anything they're doing with the Revolution that's giving me any hope for them whatsoever. Maybe they'll carve out their own little profitable niche with their classic games and their cheap hardware, but their lack of HD is really going to hurt them in the long-term, and that probably corresponds with an overall lack of graphics power that's going to hurt them with developers right from the get-go.
Keeping all this info hushed is really starting to get me pissed off. Its like Hey look at all the games I can get on the PS3 and Xbox360. But what does Nintendo have announced? NES, SNES and N64 games -_-x
Now we're on the same page. It seems most likely to me that Nintendo was caught flat-footed and is now in the process of formulating a strategy. It seems clear that they're not actually following a planned strategy right now - they're sort of making it up as they go along, and throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. People like the downloadable games, so they're keeping that. People didn't like that you have to pay for them, so now they're evaluating which games might be considered premiums. They don't seem to know what to do with third party developers. They have no real hardware to show or demonstrate or even give anybody the specs of. There are no dev kits that anybody knows anything about. They seem to be flying on a wing and a prayer right now.
I think it's pretty likely that RE5 is not planned for the Revolution at the moment, simply because Nintendo has not given anybody any reason to think this is a viable platform as of yet. Obviously, Capcom, like all experienced publishers, knows to keep their options open so they say things like "we could always bring it to other platforms later". There's no exclusivity with anybody. But that doesn't mean they're even considering a Revolution port at this point, just that they're going to wait and see what happens before pouring a bunch of resources into it.
I would have agreed with you a year or two ago -- RE 0 through 3 really were beating a dead horse. But having just played through Resident Evil 4, I think there's a lot of life left in the franchise. Since you seem to have missed it, I'll fill you in.
RE4 is set in an anonymous Spanish speaking country (often outdoors), and rather than zombies, it pits you against some decidedly Cthuloid enemies. The controls are finally functional (you can run, spin around, aim properly etc), and the inventory and ammo system has been fixed up (reloading is a matter of pressing a button).
In play, it feels a more like an FPS game than a surival horror title. There's plenty of sniping, some rail shooter levels, and even some rhythm-based hand to hand combat. There's also a bit of light RPG stuff in there: upgradable weapons, multiple paths, side quests etc.
Of course, you will need a GameCube to play it, and they're just for kids*, right?

We like it. We will continue to buy these games until they stop making them.
No one is giving you shit for buying John Fucking Madden 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002..etc...
You dig?!!?!??
The cool thing about games is that (unlike movies), games get better with each iteration.
Another thing/side rant....
It's pretty much irrelevent which systems feature which games. If the game is cool, it will sell systems.
Whether or not I buy a system is not important. WHEN I do, and for WHAT GAME is.
It doesn't bother me one bit that my Resident Evil collection spans two systems...
Resident Evil 0 - Gamecube
Resident Evil - Gamecube
Resident Evil 2 - Gamecube
Resident Evil 3 : Nemesis - Gamecube
Resident Evil Code Veronica X - Gamecube
Resident Evil 4 - Gamecube
Resident Evil : Dead Aim - Playstation2
Resident Evil Outbreak - Playstation2
Resident Evil Outbreak File 2 - Playstation2
(heh, my Metal Gear collection spans FOUR systems although it doesn't need to really.... MGS (PS1), MGS:Twin Snakes (Gamecube), MGS2:Substance (Xbox), MGS3:Snake Eater (PS2)
"I'm done being a Nintendo apologist (I used to be); I don't see anything they're doing with the Revolution that's giving me any hope for them whatsoever. Many XBox fanboys claimed that Nintendo and Sony not supporting Dolby Digital 5.1 output was going to end up being the deciding factor in the last generation (and we all know how important THAT feature was). One thing to consider is that because Nintendo hasn't released any specifications we don't really know what most of their comments actually mean; there comments on not competing based only on graphics doesn't mean that they are not going to be graphically competative (and remember the 3-4 times as powerful as the Gamecube comment came from a reporter not Nintendo); and Nintendo's PR person said that Nintendo was not supporting HDTV, which comming from Nintendo could mean 'The Revolution has No HDTV capabilities' or 'The Revolution is only supporting 480p' or quite possibly 'Nintendo (as a software company) doesn't see the advantage of making use of the HDTV capabilities of the Revolution.'
When dealing with Nintendo you have to remember one thing, in order for Nintendo's unreleased information to remain unreleased their PR people are trained to either answer cryptically or to deny anything. While Nintendo is working on the Revolution (which, we've been told, has a significant internet strategy) Nintendo says 'Nintendo doesn't believe that online gaming is important at this time' when they obviously believe that it is important; until the new Zelda was actually displayed (at E3) Nintendo would comment that they have no plans to release a 'realistic' Zelda at this time, when they do (because they're creating the game).
This would be the optimistic interpretation.
More likely is that third party developers are extremely worried about the noises coming out of Nintendo regarding technical specifications and, more importantly, controllers. Nintendo say they're going to revolutionise console gaming with the Revolution controller; to a lot of third party devs, all this implies is that they'd have to make any cross-party platforms compatible with a strange and as-yet-unknown control system. Given the generally lower sales they could expect on the Cube, most of them probably aren't figuring the Revolution into their plans right now.
Nintendo could calm a lot of jitters by announcing that there will also be some kind of dual-shock-alike controller shipped with the Revolution, as well as whatever their new idea is. This must surely be the case, if they're intending to let people use the Revolution announce their back-catalogue. However, until they announce this for sure, they're going to continue being shunned by third party developers.
Oh please, not a return to classic form for the Resident Evil series. Sure, the original was groundbreaking in its day, but the old-style gameplay has aged badly, particularly the control system. The Silent Hill series always showed up the deficiences in Resident Evil pretty starkly and even Silent Hill is looking tired after the lacklustre 4th game.
Resident Evil 4, on the other hand, managed to completely break the mould and was a great game. It was scary, but faster paced and a lot more fluid in its feel. The control system was precise and felt natural. My only complaint at all about the game was that it was Cube exclusive, which meant I had to play it using the nasty Cube controller.
If they take the Resident Evil series back to the slower paced, auto-aim gameplay of the earlier games, then I for one won't be bothering to pick it up, no matter which platform it's on.
So to assume ANYTHING from screenshots (that may or not be faked) is just insane. I don't even think the DESIGNERS know what the tone and themes of this game are going to be. Post some information in two years, and I'll be more likely to give it some credit.
Seriously. It's way too early.
StupidChildren...the reason jesus is crying
RE4 is set in an anonymous Spanish speaking country
Uh... the country's name is Spain. I think it's in Europe.
But you're right, RE rocks.
I don't need a signature.
All the darkness in games that was always touted as a "feature" was actually a cheap/easy solution to lack of hardware power and draw distances and polygons on screen. Now that the hardware is getting more powerful we won't need fog filled levels or night/flashlight levels unless they are to legitimately convey an atmosphere (or developers still taking the easy way out).

One thing to keep in mind is that when Microsoft and Sony throw numbers like 20-30x faster around it means nothing! That's just comparing numbers and it's not even close to what the consoles will actually be able to do. It pretty much assumes everything is perfect (bottle necks, programmers, etc..)
3-4x faster is a much more realistic guess for ANY of the next gen consoles in my opinion.
re4 is still coming for the ps2. your last statement is false. re4 for the ps2 was shown as late as e3 this year.
well, i think that the success of RE4 lies in the fact that the console has a lack of more mature titles. not to drag on and on about "kiddie" reputation of the GC, but there is a serious lack of more adult themed game titles on the GC. period. when you take a very, very popular console title that until then had no recent original releases [sequels and remakes dont count] and release it for a system like the GC, you have a group of fans that are starving for more adult games and you have an automatic best seller. add to the fact that it is supposedly a good game [havent played re4 yet] and there you have it.
similarly, capcom understands that the re franchise began with the playstation. due to brand loyalty, many playstation owners are owners of the ps2, and would love the opportunity to play one of their more popular franchises on hardware that they actually own, and once again... there you have it. why wouldnt capcom release re4 for the ps2? due to the latter, the re fanbase for the ps2 is probably even larger than on the gc. and since it is supposedly a good game, im sure that releasing re4 on the ps2 will attract more of the ps2's broad userbase to the franchise. since many of the ps2 fanbase will move on to purchase ps3s, they will be interested in buying another sequel to the franchise. it all makes sense, at least to me.
i can foresee capcom contemplating releasing re5 for the revolution, but since probably even capcom has no idea what the revolution control schema will be like, nor do they even know if it can handle the graphical prowess that they are using for the other two next gen systems. how can they be assured that the game they have already spent months developing will even be portable to this new console? they are waiting to see what the revolution will provide them to work with before making such an announcement.
