      Some of us work weekends, whether it's NOC-type shift work, or whether it's just extra work that needs to be done because hey, we're geeks, and we make the world go 'round.

      I'm in a NOC with half a dozen people sitting around me and not even cubicle divisions for privacy. They don't say anything about me reading Slashdot, and haven't yet made any funny comments about me reading some pink website all day, but I'm sure glad nobody was looking when a cartoon cock popped up on my screen.

      I work in a call center with a low activity level.

      While Jokes and Hoaxes are one thing, plopping a Goatse image in a non-descript link is against all ethics - it gets modded down on this forum. The same should apply to the not-safe-for-work articles that were posted.

      At the very least, this should have been in a subsection rather than spamming the main page.

      Now, if the /. editors are allowed to post images of Unicorns with Dildos as their horn (perhaps I should call them Unidildos instead), there's no reason why I shouldn't be allowed to make "Adopt a Bird Today" postings, or any other NSFW posts.

    I just went to a conference on women in technology. This post does not bode well for their future. When I realized it was a April Fool's joke, I admit I got a kick out of it. We (the men) won't see women enter the tech world until we take them seriously. Pink and ponies is not taking them seriously. The ultimate April Fool's joke that Slashdot could do? The ultimate irony? They chose women in technology.

      I completely agree. I, and several of my female engineering friends, have been reading Slashdot for a long time now. Though I do find it funny, I will admit that I find it somewhat disconcerting to have the gender balance thrown in my face. Yes, I am a female techno-geek, but my least favorite color is pink and unicorns are for children. Good joke, bad taste.

      I think the "women" that this theme is satirizing are roughly equivalent to your average Counter-Strike gamer or AOL chatrooms. It's not really related to females in tech in a professional sense. Now I suppose part of it is the social aspect -- you wouldn't want to go into an industry where your peers exclude you from social circles outside outside of work. Considering that this theme is My Little Pony, it's perhaps more representative of the start of the problem -- keeping young girls interested in pursuing technology as a career.

I'm a female science geek, hate pink (I think subconsciously I associated it with all the girly stuff I was expected to like, as a little girl, but didn't) and, while I did find the whole thing (OMG Ponies pink theme, and penicorn site) really funny at first glance, it does bother me a bit. Yeah, good joke, but not so good PR to the ladies in your readership. Not saying you have to go all politically correct and shit, but do make an effort to go easy on the gender stereotypes, mmkay?

      This is a pretty funny April Fools joke. Partially because this kind of attitude/behavour is currently so prevalent. While it is disparaging to women, it is more of a satirical commentary on current society, an unfortunate aspect of society. Females are discouraged to go into any of the sciences. I have had relatives tell me "Why are you in engineering, isn't that a guy thing? That would be too hard for you." That was said to me *not* in jest. This April Fools joke is in done in good humor, so don't be hard on the editors. They have already beat the uber loner geek stereotype into the ground.

    Does this sound farmilliar at all?
    For those not in the know, there's a somewhat similar site to slashdot called Kuro5hin, and a bunch of people from k5 fucked off and created a competing site, called husi (no Url because it sucks). Back when husi first started there were a whole bunch of messages very much like this one plastered on k5. coincidence? Or mabye this is just a standard guerilla warfare tactic of modern companies?
