Console Brand Loyalty and Lifestyle Choices
RotoGo writes "A new survey done by GamerMetrics shows that 38% of gamers prefer the Playstation 3, making it the most anticipated system. The Wii only got 22% of the audience as their number one choice. Perhaps more interesting are the 'lifestyle' choices reported by the survey. Nirvana was cited as the favorite band for those loyal to the Xbox brand and Eminem was the top pick for the Playstation brand. The Nintendo camp prefers Gorillaz and Smallville for entertainment. The study also discovered that people that like the Xbox brand are the most likely to own an iPod and a TiVo while it is the Playstation gamers who are most likely to go outside to see a movie."
Maybe they should have called it that.
Nintendo: Lifestyles (for men's pleasure)
They have forgotten to ask the one question that is surely uppermost in the minds of Slashdot readers; namely, what brand of console does one buy to maximize his chances of getting laid?
Other findings about this particular subset of perhaps atypical, but nonetheless important customers include the facts that 70% own a handheld gaming device (their preferred handheld being the PSP)
So even though the results of the survey predict a 70% market share for the PSP, in reality the DS is dominating the market. Obviously, the survey has too narrow of a sample (subset of a population) to be worth anything.
Assuming this "study" has anykind of seriousness, this is bad news for sony because they're trying to build the ultimate living room entertainment system (Blue-ray, cell cpu, big hd, wireless...etc) but if the sony fan base doesn't care so much about what they offer, not a ton of people will be ready to buy the console just because they're longtime sony buyers.
I've been a sony fan for quite some time and I am beginning to wonder where exactly is sony going with its PS3.

I can almost buy the console allegiance figures until they get into lifestyle choices that these consoles are supposedly related to. Silly IGN. Didn't they know, all of those unextreme Nintendo fans obviously only watch shows like Desperate Housewives? Pansies.

From TFA: "36% of the IGN.com audience claims loyalty to the PlayStation 3 as their next-gen console of choice" How can you have a loyalty to a product that hasn't been released? I could see the Playstation brand but not the Playstation 3. We don't know anything about it. At least the 360 is out (judge it how you want at least it's actually available to judge...)
I'm not clever enough for a sig...
Link please. I'd be interested in reading that, but I am lazy... :(
I've an Xbox, a PS/2, a Gamecube, a DS, an Xbox360 and a PSP.
I'm apparently loyal only to the economy at large.
Original Xbox owner's favorite next-gen console is the 360?! PS2 owner's favorite next-gen console is the PS3 and they love the PSP?! Gamecube owners *need* the WII and watch preteen television!? What are the chances! Just kidding about the Smallville thing, but I think it would be pretty obvious that people who own the current generation of any of the above console iterations would be revenously expecting it's next-gen counterpart.
Vito's hunky new fire dude is an xbox 360 man. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
The governments and corporations of the United States and Japan thank you for your valiant efforts as a consumer whore, and would like to present you with this plaque. That'll be $10 for the plaque, please.
120 characters for a sig? That's bloody useless.
I'll give them $15 if it comes in collector's edition packaging.
But seriously, why the troll spin on that? Contrasting an affinity for gadgets with a predisposition to "going outside" is pretty inflammatory, given the target audience (us), and I'm hard pressed to believe that it was accidental.
Also in the news, XBox users prefer soap bars while Playstation enthusiasts rely on liquid soap.
Erh?
Don't get me wrong, but how is that supposedly connected? I own a few Nintendo pieces. Do I have to listen to Gorillaz now? And since I can't have TiVo and go to the movies (obviously, or I'd have to embrace the PS3 and the X360), do I have to download my movies?
Think of the statistics surrounding the future distribution of the console market what you want. It might even hold about at that area. But hanging the lifestyle of a person onto his choice of consoles is a bit silly. What does a console tell about a person? That he plays games. Ok. That's something EVERY console tells about him.
It might hold some water when you hang it onto the price tags of the consoles, with XBox usually being the most expensive, PS behind and Nintendo coming in cheap. You might put demographics down based on that, i.e. that XBox players can and do spend more money on entertainment, and that they might be more likely to spend "more easily", be it that they have more money to spend or that they are more willing to shell it out for entertainment, with Nintendo players going for the budget line, out of necessity or because they're not willing to spend as much money on entertainment.
So maybe it's true, a Nintendo player probably downloads his movies...
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
I've...a PS/2 It's impressive that you've managed to keep one this long and all, but I'm not sure that the fact that you have a 20-year-old PC is really all that important to the discussion at hand.

Sorry, buddy, the special limited collectors edition is $150.
But it comes with a special limited collectors edition action figure.
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
Size matters.
The study also discovered that people that like the Xbox brand are the most likely to own an iPod and a TiVo while it is the Playstation gamers who are most likely to go outside to see a movie.
While I can see that it is likely that one would have to venture outside for a brief period of time in order to get to the large dark cavern in which movies are shown, in my mind, going to see a movie =/= going outside. It could just be me.
How about those that have no desire for a console (*GASP*) We had a PS2... we were so busy with other things, we sold it. New console comes out.. meh.. so what. I've got every day things to keep me busy - wife n kids. And I don't think we'll be buying them a console anytime soon. Why would I want to have my kids spend their lives in front of a blinking box? There's a whole interactive world I'd rather have them in, and I feel they're better for it!
{} ------ When I think of a good sig, I'll put it here
They're talking about lifestyles, and since obviously you don't have a life, you're not included in the study.
First of:
The survey also showed that the majority of people prefer the PSP as their handheld of choice. Only people who are looking forward to the Wii like the Nintendo DS more
When contrasted with sales data indicates that there may have been a bias against Nintendo in their survey; on top of that the most important information would be on which systemx you planned to purchase within the next 18 months (PC, XBox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, Nintendo DS)? I'm suspecting that they way the survey was set up basically could have been rephrased as "Which console do you currently own (PS2, XBox, Gamecube). Also Permutations and Combinations of the systems were not taken into account; which system are the people who own an XBox and Gamecube (and prefer the Gamecube) looking forward to? What if they prefer the XBox? On top of it all there is no control for age groups or gender; what percentage of the 18-24 year old female gamer market does Sony control, does their preferences differ from the 18-24 year old female gamers who like Nintendo?
Furthermore (if I'm wrong and the set up is not biased) I think it is embarassing that Microsoft (a company that is actively marketing their product) only recieved 28% whereas Nintendo (a company which has kept all their information secret) still recieved 22%.
Looks like someone has already forgotten the tragedy that was the Pippin! Apple and consoles do not mix!
I've an Xbox, a PS/2, a Gamecube, a DS, an Xbox360 and a PSP.
You fool, the Xbox clashes with the PS2 and the Game Cube should never be in the same room as an XBox 360. Have you no sense of Feng Shui?!?
I'm apparently loyal only to the economy at large.
Could be. I'd hate to think there are those who use such a survey as a shopping list.
"let's see, to be a proper xbox maven I'll need spruce martha stewart bath towels..."
I think when I see a certain crowd prefers Nirvana that they are old farts, but that's just my 2 centavos.

Whores get paid, they don't pay.
Brand Loyalty, if you move the letters around and change a few and remove the space and uncapitalize one, is a secret code for Idiocy. There's nothing wrong with prefering PS2 over Xbox, or Xbox over Gamecube. Maybe a system just doesn't have enough of the games you like to play. Maybe you bought three and they all died from bad drives and you don't want to buy any more from that company. There's tons of good reasons to prefer one thing over another, or to like them all for different reasons. Making your choices because you're loyal to Sony products or you've only ever bought Nintendo before is just lunacy. Sadly, it's not that uncommon.
And yes, I know you know that, I just felt like venting and hopefully annoying someone who is Loyal to a Brand.
Things work backwards when prefixed with "corporate"
Collector's Edition
Cool, so corporate level whores pay? Word up!
Did I come into some false reality here? Don't people still buy hardware for the software they can play/run on it?
This generation of consoles is the first where I actually haven't bought one (or all) of the consoles. The only reason I ever choose one over the other is software available. I could care less which company has their name on a console, I only care about what games it plays. Am I in the minority?
what about PC gamers? I mean there are still a few of us who understand first-person shooters are best played on the PC with keyboard and mouse and some crossover games are just too clunky to play without the array of extra buttons and familiar controls. I know a few people who enjoyed KotoR and Morrowind more on the PC then on the X-Box. I do not know if any of my friends even bothered to try Oblivion outside of the PC world. I do own a PS/2, but my next console is probably a Wii (dear god why) unless the PS3 comes out low enough to make it tempting just for the Blu-Ray player.
"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb."
Two points:
1. Nintendo's never steered me wrong (no, I didn't fall for the Virtual Boy either) in almost 20 years. While I don't know much of what's coming for the Revolution (outside of many Wii jokes), all I need to know is that the big N is backing it.
2. I hate Sony (and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft) enough that, if it ever came down to buying their machine or getting out of gaming, I'd be saving a fair amount of money. I loathe them so much that I won't even buy regular electronics from them, for each dollar helps fuel the DRMonster and I refuse to be a participant if I can help it.
No SNES, you are just a poser...
XML is like violence. If it doesn't solve the problem, use more.
Given that the poll shows only an 8% difference between the Xbox360 and the PS3, those 14% of gamers could very easily tilt the most-popular-console-o-meter in either direction. Of course, I'm holding out for the PS3 since I'm one of those 36%. I'm also not even a serious gamer. For me, it's a cheap Blu-ray player and with confirmed rumors of a FFVII remake I'm pretty much sold. Throw in to that the fact that it will run linux and what more do you need? It'll be interesting to look back on these numbers once the HD format wars are over and see just how much impact that 36% of die-hard fans had on the format that won.
SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA ANNOUNCES PSP LEADING MARKET SHARE OVER COMPETITORS
Reputable online journal IGN reports PSP is most popular handheld console, despite sales figures implying the opposite. Sony spokesperson explains this apparent conflict, saying "Japan seems to be experiencing a sampling bias, one corrected through the unchallanged accuracy of the IGN survey".
Yeah, but by "laid" you must be referring to getting molested by your fellow fratboys :)
I find the results of this survey suspect. The audience is obviously self-selected of people who prefer to read mindless garbage and post on fanboy-war forums. They probably like self-inflicted pain, too.
I mean, those are the only reasons I can think of to reaad IGN.

At best this "study" reflects the habits of IGN survey respondants (remember, no survey ever reflects the opinions of those who punch the surveyor) wich is a subsection of the gaming market.
What I find even more telling is that the PC ain't listed. IGN does cover PC gaming and although the 360 looked to be powerfull games like Oblivion show that the PC can still hold its own.
So this study don't matter shit. If anything it proves that console owners are sheeps when it comes to their taste in music. Or rather people who fill in surveys on websites are. Suprise suprise.

You may solo them, I prefer them in a group.
He just got the first version. The sad bit is that it probably got more memory then any of the next-gen consoles. Life is weird.

I think when I see a person who thinks people that like Nirvana count as old I am talking to a kid of about 10. Am I right?

My list is close to the same:

NES

SNES

Dreamcast
PS2
Gamecube
Xbox

Had a GameGear too but I sold it a while back. Nice system but chewed through batteries way too quick.
And for the irony, the Xbox was free (won it as a door prize at a Microsoft campus event when they were showing a new version of Visual Studio), and is fully modded. I had a D-Link DSM-320 for my living room media player but Xbox with XBMC blows the D-Link away

i am extremely loyal to my preferred game console too...
don't have one, don't intend to get one. period. far better things to spend hard-earned cash on. where's that option in the survey? the majority of the population couldn't care less about the latest-and-greatest brain-mushing video game console.
haven't bought a console in over 20 years. and yes, we still have the ol' 2600 & it sees regular use to this day. try as they may, but no one has come close to recreating super-breakout on a 2600 with paddles. it just can't be done with a game pad, joystick, mouse or keyboard.
As a cheapass gamer, I wouldn't say that Nintendo systems are cheap at all. Sure, the hardware is less expensive, but most of the best titles take forever (or longer) to hit the bargain bins. If you own more than five games, the Nintendo probably cost you more.
I can beat that. :)
I have an
Atari 2600

Dreamcast
PS2
GC
GBC
and a GBA
See my blog http://ilovecookes.blogspot.com/ for light hearted technical information.
Not at all.
You are only a dupe if you rush out and get a 360, PSP, and when it comes out the PS/3.
I have less invested in my PS/2 and GC than anyone with a 360 has spent.
See my blog http://ilovecookes.blogspot.com/ for light hearted technical information.
The PS/2 can enforce consumer loyalty by locking them into the MCA bus. Duh.
You guys must have a lot more free time than I do. I only own a GC, GBA, Genesis and PS2. The Genesis isn't even plugged in and I haven't played the GBA in over a month.
Bite the hand.
I see something conspicuously missing... ah, thats right, a girlfriend.
Ha, just kidding. With all those consoles, you wouldn't have time for a gf anyway. And, by my experience, you come out ahead on the money.
Whores let people screw them in exchange for something, usually (but not always) money...see where I'm going with this?
120 characters for a sig? That's bloody useless.
Based on the questions from the survey, I fit all of the categories.
Current console? GameCube. (Wii)
Current handheld? DS (Wii)
Band? Nirvana (X360)
Favorite TV show? Lost (X360)
Tivo? Yes (X360)
Movies in past 30? Yes (PS3)
iPod? Yes (X360)
So, will I buy a Wii, X360 or PS3? Per the survey, they believe that I will buy the X360, but I am going to buy the Wii. Why? Because I am buying it for my kids.
The survey is geared to those who play the games, not necessarily the people buying the consoles. Since the people who read IGN are older and more likely have the cash to buy the consoles, the X360 and PS3 are over weighted. For people like me who will buy a console for their kids, our input is not considered on the survey so the Wii is underrepresented for what will be the likely purchase pattern for the consoles.

Just wait for the PS3. Part of the delay is the Blu-ray LED not lasting any longer than 6 months. Rumor has it that they will release it as soon as enough of the failure bell curve is past the guarantee period so they don't get too shafted by returns.
