GameStop Short PS3s For Launch Day
GameSpot reports that GameStop will have too few units for preorders on launch day. Employees are being "asked" to wait until the second shipment of consoles to purchase units, to ensure customers can receive what they paid (and waited in the cold) for. From the article: "For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system. Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said."
A free used game? $20? that's not going to be a PS3 game then is it, so what can they get... a PS2 game? or maybe a fairly old DVD, doesn't seem worth waiting that long for to pre-order it. I wonder who is to blame here though, has GameStop just made a mistake ordering (or selling too many pre-orders before they knew the figures) or is Sony further cutting back?.. if so this seems very bad indeed for them

Hello sir or ma'am. My name is John Smith and I work for the EB in Silver Dollar City mall. We have received our first batch of PS3 and we are contacting the people who preordered early enough to get one from this batch. For verification reasons can I get your full name, mailing address, credit card number and security code?

They should be ashamed.
I was told by a gamestop manager that the reason for the all the troubles with preorders and what not was gamestop got burned by microshaft during the xbox360 release. So now, with the new consoles, gamestop didnt request as many from sony and they were only going to preorder 75% of their inventory. anyway, true or not, the moral of the story is KEIN MITLEID FUR MICROSOFT!
They keep getting hurt on this. If I were them I'd stop taking preorders entirely for systems. First microsoft breaks agreement and ships less, making customers furious at gamestop, now Sony.
Of course sony isn't going to catch flack from the customers for this, because of the immediacy of gamestop being "at fault" in their eyes.
On a second note, havoc on ebay ensues. There goes a good ebay feedback rating down the toliet.
I would respond to your troll but i'm too busy playing Gears of War and downloading a Rainbow Six Vegas demo while listening to MP3's in game and chatting to my buddies over xbox live using the 360 webcam.

if they're just going to go with the order that they received the pre-orders in then obviously people are going to camp out and wait in line for the date that they start accepting pre-orders then just stop by whenever when they're actually released. Kinda takes all the fun out of it though.

I preordered a Wii from EB, and was told they would sell the units they get on launch day in the order of who got there first. I was 31st of 32 at my location, so if they are short even a few, I'll be missing out. Any word on whether they'll be calling Wii customers too?
Could be a coupon for $20 off "Duke Nukem Forever", when it's ready.

I can't believe people are actually buying these preorders. I thought everyone knew that none of this preorder stuff was ever guaranteed. Ask the stores yourself, they'll tell you "that's how much we think we're getting".
sheesh, some people never learn.

There aren't enough PS3's to go around.
Is this really news?
It sucks that GameStop is being caught short-handed here. And it isn't their fault if they only offered as many pre-orders as they were promised consoles by Sony. But really, come on. Who didn't see this coming?
GameStop should offer fewer pre-sales than they are promised consoles. It's not like they'll have trouble liquidating the inventory if they do indeed get the promised number of consoles.

The shortages in Sony's production of the PS3 were destined to give the console mad headlines this week, much as during the PS2 launch. But none of this answers any of the important questions for the console's future; yes, supply cannot meet demand right now, but what is the actual overall demand? It's going to take at least until December 1, if not January 1, to figure out whether people will still be buying it once production starts to ramp up.
I'm beginning to wonder if it's even worth coming to games.slashdot.org between now and 2007.

The Wii hype seems to have fallen off a bit but appears to be still pretty strong. Good thing Nintendo fucked over GameCube owners wanting to play the new Zelda or the Wii launch lineup would be pretty pathetic. Lack of online play for almost all games until next year and many of the big games other than Zelda aren't appearing until March or so.
How are Gamecube owners fucked over by having to wait 2 weeks for a game? And how is the Wii launch lineup pretty pathetic without Zelda? And what big games other than Zelda aren't appearing until March or so?
Wii hype has "died down" only so far as people are a little hyped out
Most people have spent the past 6-12 months talking about "When the Revolution/Wii will be released" that they're mostly conserned with going out and buying one now
Seems like the gaming press has forgotten the 360 is still around.
That could be because everyone who owns an XBox 360 is playing the videogame that is currently ranked #1 among games released in 2006 by gamerankings.com
I wouldn't say that GameStop is entirely devoid of fault, but neither should the manufacturers be blame-less.
Would MS and Sony love to know exactly how many consoles will be available at ship? Of course! Shafting retailers because they weren't able to produce as many as they thought they would, is just bad business. But it's obviously not intentional. You could argue that they shouldn't make any estimates whatsoever, until much closer to release (or until they actually have the units created). That I can understand, although I'm sure retailers don't like that approach either. (Legions of gamers want to pre-order well in advance, and not wait till the last few days)
That said, the retailers must have known that console shipment estimates are just swags at best. You could also argue that the responsible thing would be to not allow pre-orders at all. After all, that's what Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and a slew of other retail stores do. The problem is that game stores want to have a way to distinguish themselves apart from the big-box stores, and cater to a user-base that wants and are used to pre-orders (for games at least).
So basically, I think everyone should share a bit in the blame. Manufacturers, when they know an estimate is really difficult to nail down, need to stop making promises to retailers. Retailers, when they know the same thing is shaky, need to stop making promises to consumers. And arguably, we the consumer, need the calm the heck down and live with the fact that some things (guaranteed pre-orders of low supply consoles) may not be possible.

Hope the guy who paid $1600 for his pre-order system on ebay didn't already leave feedback!
There are 01 kinds of cars in the world. The General Lee, and everything else.
Stuff like this announced this late should do quite well to deflate some flippers hopes. Hopefully a few major accounts get "stuck" in payment processing (read: paypal) long enough to discourage this kind of action. Given this, there's nothing like the sight of the legions of pwned scalpers in the morning having to do mass refunds, wondering if paypal will block them, along with getting a potential ratings hit on ebay marking the person as a known scalper.
Now if there could be some regulation that would effectively ban this kind of thing like how it has worked well with tickets? Heck, you could even give Sony an incentive of some sort to catch these flippers and create more units.
If anything, Gamestop should have announced it later so that flippers would be caught blindsided and having to deal with the buyers that end up putting a few bad actors in the red.
In short, Gamestop did a service to consumers knowing full well that the consoles will be flipped since nothing barred the action. They also at least gave the appearance of at least delaying employee purchases as well, so dont fault them.

I feel just awful for them. They take your money, don't pay you interest, for the vague promise that they will give you an actual product for it sometime in the unspecified future.
It's not like the PS3 is the first system this has happened with.
there is no need to sign your posts. this isn't usenet. your username is right there above your post. stop it.
How are Gamecube owners fucked over by having to wait 2 weeks for a game? Simple, the game would have been finished and out 6 months to a year ago had they not delayed it for the PS3.
ebgames updated their website sometime in the last few days, saying that they're not even going to be taking online pre-orders till the in store ones are all taken care of. http://www.ebgames.com/gs/ps3/ps3_signup.asp It sounds to me like they might not be getting as many as they expected, or maybe just being careful.
I for one, don't really care too much. I'm not actually getting a ps3 (not till the price drops by half), but as for the wii... I'd rather just be able to get into a line so that when my number comes up they'll send me one. My time is too valuable to wait in line for something I MIGHT get and I really don't mind having to wait a little while to get what I want.
A free used game or DVD? Uhm.... since there probably won't be any used PS3 games at that time... wouldn't, say, $20 off of a new PS3 game make a lot more sense? When you're going to pick up your new console, who's going to be enthusiastic about picking up a used game for an old console?

Your bank account is also busy paying your Xbox Live Gold monthly fee just so you can play multiplayer games... you know, online with other people.
Thank you Nintendo and (dare I say it) thank you Sony.
If I were them I'd stop taking preorders entirely for systems. First microsoft breaks agreement and ships less, making customers furious at gamestop, now Sony.
Nobody is forcing them to take pre-orders for anything, much less systems. They do it out of their own self interests. If they take more orders than they con fulfill they have nobody to blame but themselves. Other stores didn't take pre-orders and are operating on first come/first serve... For all we know Gamestop did this on purpose to prevent customers from taking their business elsewhere even though they couldn't serve as many people as they would have liked to. If history is any example, gamers will continue to be too stupid to stop shopping at Gamestop over something like this or any of their other customer-unfriendly practices, so why Gamestop take advantage?
Of course sony isn't going to catch flack from the customers for this, because of the immediacy of gamestop being "at fault" in their eyes.
Gamestop is the only party that is "at fault" here.
Yeah lets see how good that "free" Sony service is before we get too smug shall we? Given that theres little to no infrastructure, and as recently as a few weeks ago developers still had no information about the Sony online strategy, it sounds a lot like Sonys PS2 online setup. Which is to say there wasn't one and they dumped the responsibility on each developer.
For the Sony Fanboys' sake, I hope I'm wrong. I suppose well find out at the end of the week.
take deep breaths mr. fan of sony. you'll get your ps3 soon enough, in the mean time, there's really no question that Sony has done a miserable job on this launch that is already a year late.
Now, even their reduced numbers are falling short, screwing over their customers and their business partners.
But of course, it's Zonk's fault for posting the article....riiiight.
A used game at Gamestop "valued at $19.99" is only worth $5 to the store (that's how much they bought it for). AND you only get it if you wait around for them to provide you a system. So GS/EB is giving you what amounts to a $5 discount on a $600 system you waited in line for xxx hours to get.
Well, maybe. Nintendo is notorious for delaying first party games to get it done 'right.' You're almost certainly right that moving to a Wii/Gamecube release did push back the release date, but 'Ocarina of Time' was also pushed back repeatedly, presumably with good cause as that game is fantastic. From an interview on IGN from last year: "The philosophy of 'quality-first' still lives within Nintendo and it's something we won't compromise on. When Zelda game arrives, we hope to hear that players are thrilled with it and believe the wait was worth it. We think it will be." [http://cube.ign.com/articles/642/642238p1.html] Likewise, 'Wind Waker' was delayed (whether or not that was worth it in the end is another thing - I'm playing through it right now for the first time and think it's fun, but not amazing).
There's a quote from either Nintendo or Blizzard (another company who is known for delaying games) which basically said, 'If a game is not delayed and sucks, you're stuck with that version. If a game is delayed and turns out better, in two or three or five years people will remember the great game, not the delay.'

I don't know how it will turn out, but when I think "online gaming" I'm thinking "multiplayer" not "endless offers for gimme-more-cash" crap like I see on Xbox Live.
Online multiplayer gaming should be free (aside from MMORPGs like FF XI and WoW, I suppose), that's what I hate about Microsoft's offer - basic online stuff like multiplayer is only for paying members. Enough monthly fees already!
How is this a troll? At all?
But anyway, that seems to be fairly accurate representation of the launch's current situation, at least from what I've encountered.
Sorry to reply to myself - here's the quote.

Hi Zonk!
You don't need an Xbox Live subscription to play Xbox games with other people online.
Why do you dislike flippers? And why do you think there should be regulations? I can sort of understand why ticket scalping would be frowned upon, since its actually short changing people that wish to go to a show at a specific venue at a certain time to see a particular performance. Which can never truely be recreated identically again. But when it comes to physical items that only have a production scarcity I think its a bad trend to start. I mean, how many people buy collectables of all sorts in the hopes that some day they could resell them for a profit? Coins, baseball cards, etc. In the Late 80s/Early 90s I remember Upper Deck baseball cards being a hot commodity, and there was a great deal of flipping being done, which temporarily made the cards incredibly expensive - But those crazy prices eventually settled down, and the people who paid the premium (I hope) felt like idiots for paying $40 for a pack of baseball cards.
:)
People should be angry that these console manufacturers think its a good idea to promise to deliver a new system right before a major holiday when demand will certainly outstrip the supply they can have by that time.
People should also be angry with gamestop and the like for offering preorders on systems like this. It makes a bit of sense when it comes to games, if a game is preordered it will be shipped overnight - if there are no preorders and its not a highly anticipated game it usually comes 3 day. But gamestop can be almost certain that a new system right before Christmas will not go unsold
But I say again, theres also quality of service to consider.
You can get free dialup, but I'll bet you pay for broadband dont you? Its the same internet, why shoudlnt it all be free?
Live is very affordably priced, and I'm happy to pay it for the quality of service I get.
Sometimes you get what you pay for. If Sony can pull off an Xbox Live level service and offer it for free, I'll applaud not only their ingenuity but their altruism. But I'll believe it when I see it.
hi! how are you?
You can call me a Nintendo fanboy if you want, but if the big N decided to ship *only* Zelda with the Wii and soldered the diskbay down so that you could never swap CDs I, for one, would say "Good, that way it won't fall out if an earthquake happens while I'm playing". Happily, they have not taken my advice for industrial design, and so I will be able to play Trauma Center, Mario Galaxy, and a backlog of bargain-bin Gamecube games, too.
Help poke pirates in the eyepatch, arr.
I'd be better if people would submit more awful PS3 news. And the Wii needs another rumor please!

I know of three friends who all pre-ordered Gears of War, each from a different GameStop and none of them got it on launch day, or even the day after - 2 other friends and myself went down to Best Buy day after launch and had no issues getting our copies even when they couldn't get the ones they pre-ordered weeks prior.
GameStop having some higher level issues with preordering?
"But won't that turn into some sort of brawl on release day?" you ask?
Yes, yes it will. And Sony will put it on pay-per-view and make enough so that the next system will only cost $99 at launch. God bless capitalism.
Shift happens. Fire it up.
Enough said.
I mean, I talked to a Game Stop guy in my area and he recommended strongly against anywhere preordering, whether it was GS/EB or anywhere else. That, along with recollection of the 360 fiasco, was more than enough for me. Curiously, I haven't found anywhere else in my area who is doing the preordering thing. I suppose they're just a glutton for punishment.
And now I am going to be camping in front of Circuit City from Tuesday until Sunday. In a tent. Woo!

This is precisely why I wait until I can physically pick one up off of a shelf, pay for it with a real person behind the counter, and ship it via my own automobile. It entirely saves me the trouble of dealing with every one of the above issues.
It's called bleeding-edge because you may have to bleed during the process. If there's no guarantee and you donate your funds to them in the hopes that you'll acquire this new piece of tech, then there's a chance you may get screwed and have to wait without that cash, despite what they may or may not have promised.

The "flippers" as you so put it only exist because of the temporary market failure present during the initial roll out of the product wherein the manufacturer cannot make enough units to satisfy the demand at the fixed price. They actually provide a valuable service to the market by restoring price elasticity.
There are really only two solutions to the "flipper" problem. You can allow prices to rise to market-clearing levels or find a way to produce enough units to match demand. The former option will piss off the status-seekers who see the price as the value of the system. They buy because it is expensive, so a drop in list price becomes a loss of value to them since their more patient friends will have the system for much less and their window of bragging is not really all that large at all. Those people are jerks and we should ignore them.
The other group, the people who just really want to play the system as early as possible will simply have to decide if the extra time is really worth the price premium. The price of the system to them is irrelevant except inasmuch as it exceeds their perceived value, in which case they will elect to wait a bit.
The best option though is probably to hire outside manufacturing to produce extra units during the peak demand times. Covering the lower margins could be accomplished by producing "collector's editions" or simply charging a bit extra for the auxiliary models during the launch period.
In any event, a shortage is a market failure. The companies making these things have a pretty good idea what the demand is going to look like (especially with the existence of pre-orders) so there is no excuse for running out for months at a time. Unless it is a planned market failure...
Can you be Even More Awesome?!
You're almost certainly right that moving to a Wii/Gamecube release did push back the release date, but 'Ocarina of Time' was also pushed back repeatedly, presumably with good cause as that game is fantastic.
And Wind Waker wasn't pushed back enough, something like a half-dozen dungeons were cut, and the last 25% of the game turned into a scavenger hunt...
Yeah, I don't think I mind the wait.
Heh. Yeah, I'm playing through Wind Waker right now for the first time (needed a Zelda fix before this weekend...) I just got to the scavenger hunt (stupid Triforce pieces...) and yeah, even with the warp song (whatever the hell it's called) it's friggin obnoxious. Wind Waker isn't a bad game (hell, I'd even say it's a pretty good game) but it sure as hell isn't a fantastic game...

Even as a PC gamer who is very used to the idea of the multiplayer component of a game being free (unless it's an MMO), I have to say that Microsoft's Xbox Live is a great service. £40 a year here in the UK and you can see the value right from day one. Sony's "free service" is touted as a rival to XBL but it looks like apart from a global buddy list they are just leaving the actual online technicalities (i.e. the important stuff) to the game developers, just like they did with the PS2's online service.
Since Nintendo have shown/revealed nothing about actual online multiplayer gaming on the Wii, we shouldn't assume it will be free yet up to the standard set by XBL. In an ideal world XBL would be free, but since no one else has made a console service than can rival it you can't blame them for wanting to charge.
So, although the PS3 launch is two days earlier on paper, statistically, the first million Wii customers who just walked into a store and saw a box will be playing games much earlier than the first million preorders for the PS3?
I sorta want a Wii. I'm not even thinking in terms of preorders; I figure if I happen to be near a game store, I'll walk in and see what they have.
My blog: http://www.seebs.net/log/ --- My iPhone/iPad app: http://www.seebs.net/seebsfrac/
Do I misunderstand the business model? I was under the impression the idea behind pre-orders was to lock in buyers before a product is even out, AND profit from the interests on their money...
Now, the second point comes moot when you have problems like the above, and only a retard wouldn't have expected it. And the first point falls totally flat, since they'll sell out -no matter what-.
So who had the bright idea of allowing preorders for these consoles again?
Hell, if the announced PS3 online infrastructure sounded as good as the one I currently experience with my Live Silver account, I'd be more impressed, but Sony seem to think that including a web browser means never having to say "here is a way to compare high-scores with your friends, send them voice messages or check their progress with achievements".
"I Know You Are But What Am I?"
Using http://www.playstationfinder.com/ - one way or another, it's going to be easier to snark one from a web site than fighting your way through fanboys for preorder position in a shopping mall. There's also ps3seeker.com if you're looking for an in-person buy, but I don't think it's going to help much post-launch.
Just think of all the hassle it would solve, and all the profit Sony is losing. All they need is one giant dutch auction - if the price bids up to $1600, then all that money goes to Sony.
Granted, the Wii launch is still pretty strong without them, but you did ask.
"What is Internet Explorer 7? Are you saying we can't access the normal internet?" - I love tech support. Really.
Is anyone surprised that a certain retailer is short of PS3s? I thought that all retailers would be short, given the lines of people waiting for them.
While a $20 used game or movie isn't much, I guess it's better than nothing, and more than one would normally get when they place a preorder and don't get their system on the first delivery...
Don't buy WoW Gold! Make it yourself!
And I would respond to your troll, but I'm busy play the 200 or so free xbox games on my modded xbox and playing against others on Xlink kai over the net, and listening to ogg files and watching xvid movies and running python proggies with XB scripts and DS Linux, and playing every console game ever made before 1995, and playing endless supply of mame arcade titles and infringing copyright and waiting for the XB360 to be as mod-able as the original xbox..... :(
The PS3 launch is going to be sensational because of the uncertainty surrounding it - who will be the select few to walk away with a PS3? On the other hand, every *real person* I've talked to is excited about Wii launch day. They seem to have forgotten that the PS3 launches the day before!
Excellent points all, and well thought out. I would point out though that adding manufacturing in this case was not something that Sony could do to increase systems, no matter what the cost. The bottleneck in this case was the blue laser diodes required for the Blue-Ray drives. The batch yields ended up being much lower than anticipated, by the time this was discovered there was no way to bring another manufacturer online before the release date, this is a physcial limitation of producing such a high-end technology component. Unfortunately no matter how much money they threw at the problem (regardless of whether that's a good idea since the hardware is sold at a loss anyway) it is very unlikely that another plant could be retooled to produce the lasers in time simply because of the unique procedure, complexity, and precision required from the manufacturing process.

Keep pumping the sunshine there champ, and if you happen to have a PS3 by March 2007 let us all know how it is.
I am not concerned about the shortages. I happily plunked down $1500 dollars on ebay for a pre-ordered system. The privilege of being the first to play the system and not have to wait for the second round of shipments will make it all worth while. So what if some people who pre-ordered don't get it on launch day. There is no way that ebay id ps3cmdr119 will short me. After all I paid in full already, so technically I am not a pre-order. Right?
Yes, I'm sure you love you little Microsoft-branded sandbox, since it would surely be impossible for games to offer multiplayer over, you know, a plain Internet connection!
Don't you realize that you sound exactly like an AOL user extolling the virtues of the restricted selection of information available on that service, as opposed to using the real Internet?

That's three words! Battle Dot Net!
I pointlessly argue with you because your example of a wildly popular free service infamous for lag destroys my hope and dreams of a perfect world!
Thats not really an appropriate analogy.
By leaving multiplayer features the sole responsibility of each developer you get a very hit or miss result. Some games will have a good multiplayer experience, because the developer thinks its important. Some devs will try to get by with minimal effort. Having a network where MS can dictate the basic required features ensures a consistent experience. For example: every game has voice chat because MS makes it easy to implement.
It also ensures that all the various games play nice together. Its nice that when I'm playing Ghost Recon I can get a Halo 2 invite from my buddies. Do you really think there would be this level of interdeveloper cooperation if it werent mandated by a third party?
If you dont like Live or think its a rip off, more power to you. The point of my post was lets not compare MS apples to Sony oranges.
"Having a network" and enabling a "consistent experience" are two different things. For example, making cross-game voice chat involves designing an API and a protocol, but providing the actual servers to run that protocol on is not necessary. In fact, Jabber is an example of a [voice] chat protocol that's independent from the entities providing the service.
It would have been entirely possible (albeit not likely, given its totalitarian ethos) for Microsoft to have done the same thing as the Jabber developers, and it probably would have been better in the same way that the (non-centralized) Internet is better than (centralized) AOL.

Just got off the phone with the local EB Games. They said that they found out from Sony this morning that they aren't getting 8 units, they are getting 4 on launch day. Don't know if this applies to all stores, but I'm guessing it's across the board.
Tell me, how do you police this completely open, unregulared, free system? How do you handle people who cheat, ruining the game experience for everyone? Do you just boot them and hope you don't ever see them again? What about that obnoxious little 12 year old who thinks its cool to call every one "niggers" and "dirty jews?"
Live has these problems and its not a perfect system. But they do try to address these issues.
I'm not sure why youre so invested in this. You dont like Live. Good for you, theres always XB connect. Theres a lively community of XB multiplayer gamers who feel like you do.
