Sonic The Hedgehog Coming to the iPod
mrneutron2003 writes "Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be a new gaming option on the iPod. They're looking to charge about 4.99 for the classic title. 'Support is slated for the iPod nano with video, iPod classic, and fifth generation iPods ... Sega hopes that tremendous install base of the iPod family will lend to exposing a whole new audience to the old time wonders of Sonic The Hedgehog. The game has apparently been redesigned with the iPod in mind and should provide good port experience.'"
That's right, I'm on to you Pit Spikes, you were once my bane but now, on my iPod, you'll be my biznatch!
That's not exactly going to have a very good control system, most likely, I for one would like to at least press two buttons at the same time to move and jump.
( o ) - all your buttons.
Here's to hoping I'm wrong!
my band is more brutal techno punk than yours
boing!
$4.99 (assumed US currency) on iTunes store. Specially designed for the iPod. That's pretty much the extent of the "article".
Will it be as fantastic a port as Sonic Genesis for GBA? And by fantastic, I mean god awful.
Hopefully it won't be as awful as the GBA port of Sonic was. Damned glitches up the ass.
If you believe in privacy, and believe you have "nothing to hide" at the same time, you're a goddammed idiot
If I have developed a working PC-based prototype of a game that I think would work well on an iPod, whom should I contact to get it ported? The iPod Games page for consumers doesn't appear to have any links for games developers to use. Nor does the iTunes Store feedback form have "Request a Game" in the "Request Type (required)" menu. Or is Apple dealing only with publishers of comparable market capitalization to, say, Disney?
They have hacks so you can play MP3s on your game boy, and they have video games on your iPod...
So, do I get a portable Video Game Music Player, or a portable Music Player Video Game?
The lines are blurred.
Self proclaimed typo king, and inventor of the bear destroying coffee table (patent not pending).
Wonderful, so they're making an iPod game that I beat way back in 1991, and has been ported anywhere that will take it. So when is Sega going to make a NEW Sonic game that doesn't suck cock?
Let's stop dilly-dallying and just change "-1: Overrated" to "-1: Disagree" or "-1: Doesn't Subscribe to Groupthink".
Yeah, of course the only things I miss while playing Sonic are a slow display and clunky buttons.
Stupidity is the root of all evil.
Otherwise I don't think a feat like this would be remotely possible with the one action button ipod, no?
Once you start despising the jerks, you become one.
Rockbox is free open source firmware for DAPs that allows you to play Doom! Granted the frame rate is a little juddery and the controls aren't laid out perfectly, but who cares? It's Doom! On an ipod! Every geek on slashdot should be drooling at the thought!
I supposed I should also point out at this moment that Rockbox also supports, among many, many other things:
-Voice driven menus for the visually impaired
-A gameboy and gameboy colour emulator
-Over 15 sound codecs, including ogg and flac
-Gapless playback
-Replaygain
-A five band parametric equalizer
-Dual booting with original firmware and others, including ipodlinux.
And runs on the following architectures:
-Apple: 1st through 5.5th generation iPod, iPod Mini and 1st generation iPod Nano
(not the Shuffle, 2nd/3rd gen Nano, Classic or Touch)
-Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
-Cowon: iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5 and M5L
-iriver: H100, H300 and H10 series
-SanDisk: Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series (not the v2 models)
-Toshiba: Gigabeat X and F series (not the S series)
More are in development. Unfortunately there isn't likely to be a port for 6th generation ipods for a very long time, if ever, due to the firmware encryption present on these devices.

This is how the loudness war is killing music.
Bring us Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine!!
It seems to work ok, I've only played it for about a minute. But I can say, that I wish I had bought the Applecare plan - my clickwheel isn't going to survive this game. ;-)
You click (and hold) right to run right, click and hold left to run left, center button jumps. Touch "Menu" to look up, touch play/pause to crouch. It's a little awkward, but I think I'll get used to it.
Why? No blast processing. How can you have Sonic without blast processing?!?!?
I still have more fans than freaks. WTF is wrong with you people?
Too bad I don't have an iPOd. MEanwhile, a team is porting it to TI GRaphing calculators.
Spikes? Pah, those things just make you drop your rings. Try bottomless pits!
