Yup that was the white elephant in the missing logic of that spec. I think if i -absolutely needed to get something done I would not fire up X on an handheld. smh
as I understand it the sidewinder missile uses a very primitive analog seeker head. I would imagine that it's evolution is a little more than 'closed' so let's see what this different/open parallel effort leads to
Agreed this article was as light as a popcorn fart.
If you only count the current and possibly the previous iteration of so called 'iPhone killers' then maybe in asia their local home brew version will rock, but when you factor in the BBs and other models with a physical screen than the article might be considered just regular flame bait.
In a country that prides itself on style versus function (U.S.A.) It should come as no surprise that Apple succeeds. If the devices are measured on customer satisfaction or human interface design then again apple seems to have it all over other so called 'smart phones'
But if you count it by market share and factored it by fanboy pride - how else can you explain BB not being included (as being the owner of a physical 'qwerty' layout) In the 8 or nine years that I have been anchored to a BB I have _never_ considered getting one for personal use. Now that I have my iPhone the work BB is 'retired'
Summing it up like this... My boss wants to show me all of these other phones that he bought. Me I have nothing to prove.
Hell Fscking No This story ran in the same day as one about the future of information and ethics - Basically what information and research should be pursued and what may, just by nature be ethically or morally hard to bear. As an athlete and a proud one I say no.
At what point does it become ok to then implant electrodes and or perform on stimulants. There are things that Air Force pilots use that I would not give to a gorilla. If it is chemicals then it is not a sport we are humans
This is my knee jerk reaction But I honor the human condition
As a developer I hate to say it but I have never had Apple RAM fail or overheat or do whatever breaks ram. I used to not believe it when I worked for Apple's Help Desk and we would ask users to pull third party RAM (not for all issues just for repeatable KP's and random reboots) and the issue would go away.
Heck I saw it this year when my company bought bargain RAM and in the middle of doing some dev work my unit would just reboot or halt. It took me 2 days to figure it out. I pulled the side of the tower and right there on the riser were some Red Lights that I thought should not be there. I pulled 2 GB of RAM and it went away.
I have also had this in client \ studio units where they thought I was not doing my job correctly, so I walked away and it turns out that they lost a week of recording time b\c it took that long to say "what do I have to lose?" and bit the bullet and bought the good stuff.
I cannot prove the RAM went bad b\c it was not Apple I can say that for what it worth I have had zero faults in the expensive RAM and several other cases where the users and even other programmers would have a fit because they saved a few bucks and then unit was occasionally unstable.
It is a lot like Schroedingers cat. You cannot determine the state (dead\alive) from th outside.
AND lastly for what it is worth a "bargain" is only a bargain if it saves you billable time and effort. I can afford it. And i have piece of mind on my MBP so while I felt like I got b|tched at the Apple Store. I have loved it every day since
and or old folks homes. It is a shame (mi Abuela would say a downright SIN!) to just chuck them when a non-profit group can put it to a real good use. Put it in an after school setting with a typing tutor, or in a retirement home with mozilla or what not and let these units retire with the retirement crowd.
10.5 (and Linux) for that matter allow me to keep my `~/`-home directory on another slice or partition. As a matter of preference when I travel I go lightly, just an iPhone and a Firewire drive. and that drive goes in the luggage right on top. As a professional I act like a professional and get treated as a professional.
If I was carrying some wrong sh*t I would NOT fly with it. As a criminal I would expect to be treated like a perp. Please expect that if you have done something really worth them looking into that they will not break a sweat working you over inside and out.
However, at the worst since I AM innocent, if they took my drive or computer, then it is just a copy of what I have at home. When I get to the remote site everything that I need and all of my preferencess and errata are right there on the remote computer. If they had my box for more than half an hour I would wipe it no questions asked.
The iPhone gives me just about 80 percent of the functionality all of the time and then I am -in and out- swiftly
Wow that is really insightful. Yes the pure fact of the matter is if they want to crack your data they will. It is the weight of living in a police state that has us convinced that we can win a war against fear by scaring us *witless* So your combo seems to be the most well thought out so far. The BEST security is to not vote these jokers in in the first place.
BUT the strangest thing is that if they really want to get at my data all they would really have to do is take me in the back and beat the crap out of me. I think I can remember just about any password
I think that if they imaged my box, then the best that they would get is a great Jazz + Funk Collection ~Some T&A pr@wn and whatever movie I have to watch on the plane
Full on friggin Awesome.... I mean think about it for just a second. How much faith do you have in your tech. And his site is still standing. -=- Show Some Love. That looks mighty fun! but as a family man I would never do something that was so PATENTLY dangerous, but come on
As far as jokes go. But once when I worked for NIH I ran into a postdoc working on a slate bench out in the open no protection, not even an apron. And then I heard a really loud buzzing noise. Kind of like a pager in a jar (it was 1999 so people still had pagers) it was super loud. So I came around the corner and saw it was a Geiger Counter. "it's hot." was all the researcher had to say.
These things are not like you see in sci-fi movies. And some isotopes, especially those selected for medical and research uses are in the bright-hot-loud category, but otherwise 'sort of harmless'
On the whole the greater the level of security the more that my users complain that it is hard\ inconvenient\ unnecessary let them eat sh*t -- I do not want to seem anti - but it is really only an issue when the client on the other side of the flaw is win32.
Realistically none of my home boxes run M$ and I check my intrusion log in both directions about once a month and it shows zero events. OTOH based on this and the/. post below it is like putting diamonds on doodie. All that we can hope is that we (IT Professionals) can lead by example. Frequent Password Changes - Non trivial passwords - encrypted home folders - user data whatever.

Muslims are not the only ones who dislike 'Graven Images' and are not the only ones who will go to another county and devalue human life. It is worth noting that we are supposed to be intelligent people ( at least sometimes) on this board and here are a bunch of children of x-ians acting like they can point a finger at the Muslims. When we Mock the other man we make a fool of ourselves.
We all have something that we hold as special and when someone else does not feel respectful of that then we are hurt. Right now the U.S. is hurting Muslims all over the world and our 'free (as in RAPE) press' censor it daily. So before you get on your hypocritical ass and ride her all over your ignorant hometown remember that 'thou shalt not have graven images' comes from most of our father's religions.
Besides all of the other salient points. We are counting on Judeo-Christian religion. Which is blatantly cobbled together from other bronze age stories. This is the third most populous religion and here in the United States we act as though it is the only true word. The simple fact is These stories in the bible have the same significance as other ancient texts which claim that the world is carried on the back of a great turtle. Or that is was created by a serpent that cleft the waters in two. There are many myths and these contradict each other. And if you can say that one religion is false and was made up by 'them guys' in that 'other tribe' then it is quite possible that 'our' religion was also made up
No I am not saying that religion has no place in the world, it seems to put the believers minds at ease, yet it also seems to cause true believers at least as much angst. Despite my distaste for religion I believe that they are all based on 'love' or a culturally accepted version of 'love'. However religion and science should not be in the same ring. Let these so called christians debate with other and see what they love. this was the old domain of religious wars

It is easy to get carried away by Apple's 'elitist' market\marketing. But Fact of the matter For the price you get a lot of fancy stuff.

I'm just sayin'. Telling this story to the family is gonna suck like bringing tribbles to x-mas dinner
Sounds less stupid than Sing is King!... But if you have been to his site in the last three years he really has more Raw understanding of the Mac, and incidentally just about every other OS that you have never heard of. Undoubtably he is the pulse of a new mac future.
macFuse... Now that I will reserve judgement on. I am sure that it works at least a little, in the same way that HFS and NTFS were based on OS 2\Warp's HPFS, but having R\W support means I can now fix any ailing NTFS drive in my shop-- Typically I will get a drive in and the dell or HP that it was on will report the drive as dead, and it wont boot for a variety of reasons, I will plug it into a Mac an recover all of the data... Definately gonna use it.
Woz is great and Woz was brilliant (before too much weed and the plane crash) And I do not want to sound like a FanBoy (We're Off TO See the Wizard...) but he was an inventor not a developer -- A designer not a marketer that was somebody elses job (Jobs)

The money came the money went. I am sure He doesn't miss it. (except for how he could help people with it) But all of those students past and future will miss him when he is gone.
Dale Carnegie Said something along the line of a man who dies a millionare has missed the point of money.
Definately not surprising. Now with the X86 build being public, OS X is Yet Another Unix. I would expect them to keep "Open" the parts of the kit that benefit them but why not keep MoBo level stuff *sekrt*
Like I said before if the Maxxus Hacks were released as a shareware option Like Ryan Rempel's Unsupported OS X tool, then I think apple would not have smiled but might have turned a blind eye. But by making pre-patched 'Don't buy the OS' steal-me.torrents he forced Apple to behave like Apple Computer Corp. must.
OTOH with Knoppix and Other linuxes AND Fink plus other tools running native in the IcBM (Intel chip Based Macs) units why is OpenDarwin x86 even remotely relevant?
One of the things that I have done as I set Up deploy images is move the sensitive apps into the local admin's home folder as/%yourAdminUser%/Applications/Utilities THEN I filevault (encrypt) the user account. I learned a Loooong Time ago to only use admin tools in the admin account. Also I set the user variable for the shell to/Null whenever possible. This spooked me when I tried to install Fink in 10.2, but the result of both of those suggestions means that I must think about what I do before I do it.
Now for most users this is not even on the radar but the real solution is not in changing the browser, but in changing the tools that the exploits use.
Time will tell. Things keep getting more exciting. Stay Tuned.
Well things definately will. See Apple is the Hardware arm and MacOS is the SW arm and the whole thing is a great big Aqua Octopus. I have a few older G3 and G4 upgraded Macs running OS X with 3rd party support (XPost Facto) and then a G4 800 and an iBook 1.2 running real OS X and I tell you this will only give people a taste of what they want. Then at some point they might go for a Real Apple - or not.
Steve Jobs used to have a quote about a friend who spent waayy too much time and money hot rodding a 'long block' VW into a Psuedo-Porsche 911 it was too loud too slow and too expensive, did it hurt porsche's 'Name' or VW's bottem line - Does my G3 233 running EduBuntu hurt Apple's bottom line. Not in the least. I suspect that the desire to have a Mac running the MacOS will get the best of these hobbyest hacx0rs will sell more Macs in the long run.
It would not be a matter of 'Ethics' if this was sold as a shareware kit like XPostFacto i.e. You buy an install DVD and the shareware kit and run the Mac on whatever you want. But feeling a false sense pride in getting a.torrent ready rolled is like slapping a Porsche badge on a turd and calling yourself an engineer from Stuttgart BTW I am not saying Apple = Porsche but factory support means something if my iBook Can't run properly I can send it back and get another one. If My G3 can't then I fix it.
Dont Worry Build KDE inside of OS X. You can say free 'beer' v. free 'speech' all you want. I like my iApps nothing beats the apple 'Pro' apps (like Final Cut Pro and such) but when I have to choose between 'Warez (MS Office \Adobe CS and Starry Night ) and running KDE concurrently with OSX the answer is simple.
Nobody is forcing anyone to not run a Linux Desktop just follow a basic Mac idea. 'I use it because it works' or 'It just gets out of my way and lets me get the job done' KDE inside of OS X rawks!

For real, even tho I do not use windows (except for virtualized) I am glad to see real benefits of solid research and quick implementation.
I for one am glad to see that not all of the hard work is being done by the attack squad.
