I stopped watching TV about 10 years ago and most of the shows I see are on DVD, I watch as I have time available. I did like the series, but never enough to tune in or buy cable.

I've stopped watching new shows as a result of the cancellations of so many good shows. Now I only bother if it has a good run or completes. I only just started watching Lost. Futurama is excellent and I'm glad it has been renewed but it is a rarity that shows survive this long regardless of quality, especially shows that get cancelled and then come back.
Not watching new shows saves a lot of time and I guess I should thank those willing to waste their time getting into a new show with all the risk of cancellation and the disappointment associated.

Yeah I bought the last season on Amazon's digital download service, they come out the day after it airs so it's like having cable without needing to throw away money on the cable service.

I've only seen a few episodes of Lost and never understood the hype. As I understood it, the story and characters get more and more convoluted and laughably bad (in the sense of cringing and rolling your eyes) as time progresses and I heard that the series finale is a big disappointment. Unless you're in it specifically to see how disappointing it will be, from what I gather you may want to quit while you're ahead and not waste money on further seasons (if you've not bought all of them yet).

Ditto. It's not worth spending an extra ~$1000 a year for the 3-4 shows on cable that I like. Cheaper to watch it on hulu (free) or DVD (~$30 per season). I haven't seen any of the new Futurama since FOX canceled it. One of these years I'll acquire it and it'll be like new.

I think most fans of Lost (me included) were hooked in by the first season and wanted to see how it all ended up. The first two seasons were excellent, but it started to sort of tail off from there until it was indeed laughably bad toward the end. Still, by the time it got really difficult to watch I still stuck it out because a.) I wanted to see what they would do, and b.) I knew it wasn't going to last forever because they had already announced how many more seasons it would get.

So, I watched the whole thing when it aired, but I would never want to watch it again, and certainly wouldn't buy it on DVD.

Only the very last scene (all of a few seconds long) was written before the first season started, and honestly with the producers' penchant for lying through their teeth ("everything on the island will be scientifically explainable"), I have a hard time believing even that. You are right that they had to make up a lot of stuff because they didn't anticipate getting so many seasons, and it definitely shows.

I figured out it wasn't an alternate timeline at episode 4, and guessed the real answer by the next, although I wasn't positive until it was revealed in the final episode. Actually, I thought it was a beautiful mind fuck. A flash *way* forward.
I can see people not liking such an odd show, but the outright hostility baffled me. I enjoyed myself with it and moved on.

Likely its because the show raised odd questions which demanded to be answered and which grabbed people. In exchange for watching, people felt those questions should have been answered since the entire show was about the questions constantly being raise. The show ended with a bug "fuck you" and a laugh, having never answered almost all the questions it painfully went about forcing in their face and asking.
When people are treated poorly likely this they tend to feel tricked, played, screwed, so on and so, and in the very least, feel like they've wasted massive amounts of time on a show that never delivered.
Its pretty normal for people to get angry when massive amounts of time have been wasted.
Most call this poor writing. Some call it J.J. Abrams' style. I call it both. Abrams has a long history of creating significant disappointment with most of the projects he touches.
I'm very happy to say, I didn't bother watching Lost because it was obvious from the first episode it was going to be a massive disappointment and a complete waste of time. Hopefully people have learned their Abrams lesson.

I've been a huge Futurama fan since the show first came out (although I admit I stopped watching the last few years before it was cancelled, because Fox was screwing around and always pre-empting it with baseball games that ran too long, and constantly changing the time and day it was airing. But I watched them all on DVD, and have probably seen each episode 20-30 times by now.) The new episodes totally rock - some of this season's episodes rank up there as some of the best episodes of Futurama from any season.

There's an episode that spoofs iPhones and Twitter, an episode where the whole Planet Express team swaps brains with each other, one that lampoons California Proposition 8 (Proposition Infinity), etc.

I highly recommend the DVD movies too (commonly referred to as the 5th season) - especially Bender's Game, which makes fun of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and Fantasy in general.

...and as another posted reminded me, the episode "The Late Philip J Fry" had a plot involving a time machine that only worked moving forward in time, and they discover that time is circular. Very cool sci-fi, and a touching love story too (really!) Probably my favorite episode of the current season.

I just stopped because I couldn't sit through a show, even a half hour show anymore. The writing, the acting, I dunno, it just doesn't hold my attention and I get all restive and start looking for things to do. You know you're really not paying attention when the TV is on and you think about turning it on to see if there's something on - uh, but it's already on - it's just become some kind of background white noise. Now I could really get into staring at an aquarium of fish for a half hour, no problem, at least the fish are doing something interesting, compared to TV shows.

I gave up TV over 5 years ago now. At first it was a realization that I was spending a ~$1000 per year for the *privilege* being sold like a slave to the networks. I was spending my money so they could make more money by providing my eyeballs as a product.
I say slave not as hyperbole, but as a true estimation of how I was being treated as it was not on anything near reasonable terms. I'll be honest, if the advertising was limited to two interruptions lasting no more than 4 minutes total per 30 minute program I *might* cooperate. However, by the time I gave up TV it was nearly 10 minutes per 30 minute program and I was being forced to pay higher and higher rates for bundled groups of networks that I did not even want. I could give two shits about dumbass reality programs or what Paris Hilton is doing next. I wanted some SciFi shows, some comedy shows, and a bunch of documentaries. You could keep all the news networks, cooking shows, and melodrama BS.
Having recently moved into an apartment that forces you to purchase TV as part of a collective I have perversely watched some regular TV. It was like hammering nails into my head.
Now I have complained in recent years about the overlays and logos... but dear GOD the shit they pull today. Some networks are playing movies with HUGE animated overlays. Widescreen movies that have fucking tickers running below it.
It is literally impossible to enjoy TV if you are over a certain age. Unless you have been raised (brainwashed) into the information overload that is our digital experience you can't concentrate on the movie without advertisements constantly running in your face.
Honestly what do they think they can get away with? Creating a new generation of people that would considerate it weird and uncomfortable to watch a movie without any of the billion advertisement distractions going on around them? It's like an evolutionary experiment in which only the ADD are suited to survive in.
It's absolutely hilarious too for the movies on the networks. Piracy groups would not touch that with a 10ft pole. They only record movies in the theaters to be first. By the time a movie is on TV the piracy groups have already gone "gold" and released DVD rips, DVD 1:1 images, BlueRay 720p rips, and on some sites FULL BlueRay images. They are not going to cap a 10 year old movie off a TV network and release it.
There is only one source to watch TV programs and movies "as God intended" with no interruptions or distractions. That's DVD. Netflix is going to continue making a killing. It's just sad right now. I pay $40 a month (forced) to get no less than 3 networks airing reruns of Scrubs. Netflix has the entire series in better quality on my TV without any kind of interruptions or distractions. Gee.... I wonder which one I will watch.
I would not choose to pay one red cent extra for their crap. The value of the products and services you get through the networks is on a race to the bottom.

Star Trek was an amazing film, it was exactly what the franchise needed in a reboot. There are still some ridicularitys such as "red matter" but on the whole that movie was solid. Alias was also fine work.

Which was made much worse by the creators outright stating that all these mysteries had real answers, and that they would be told them. I didn't believe it and when I watched it was just to see what crazy and inexplicable stuff would happen that week. But I certainly understand why some people would take the creator's at their word -- after all, usually shows just imply they have a coherent plan when they really don't. Here, people were literally lied to. It makes sense that they'd be hostile.

Too many episodes. I really enjoyed Lost, especially the first series but it was clear the writers ran out ideas and the show went to shit by the end.

American tv shows generally have a significantly high amount of episodes per year compared with UK tv shows.

I can get bored of some US tv shows that go on for 22-24 episodes in a year because the overall storylines get stretched far too thin sometimes and the writers get heavy on the padding-out, but on the flip side I often find myself getting annoyed when there are only 6 or 8 episodes of a UK show in a year because those few episodes are so very good.

It's the old conundrum of quality vs quantity.

I love Futurama and am unashamed to admit when I read it's back for a 7th season I punched the air with both my fists.

My favourite of the most recent series is Lethal Inspection because it feels like the early days of Futurama.

I wish Fox would quit fucking with it though. BTW I purposely stopped watching The Simpsons (new and old) a couple of years back because I realised it just cannot make me laugh out loud at all, whereas Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, South Park all have made me laugh like a loon on several occasions.

Oh yeah Lethal Inspection, good call. Another great, touching episode, reminded me a bit of Jurassic Bark. Simpsons still make me laugh, but Futurama I watch every week when the new episodes are on, Simpsons every once in a while I download the episodes and watch some.

It wasn't a lie but it wasn't exactly the truth. The show opened on Jack opening his eyes and ended with him closing his eyes dying. The "not exactly the truth" comes from the fact that Jack was suppose to die in S1 or S2, and the truth comes from opening and closing was always planed for his character.

I think what Lost tried to do was great. Yeah, it was far from perfect, but, shit, have you ever seen anyone try to do what they did with a weekly series? It was a fairly kickass attempt to do something really different. And all this bellyaching by the peanut gallery is just going to make sure no one tries it again, and we get more steaming piles of reality TV, or another CSI or more watered down superhero fluff.

The original Star Trek is one of my favorite TV shows ever... But does it have "real sci-fi"? That's an honest question, as I haven't read a ton of science fiction books. (Also, is "real" sci-fi the same as "hard" sci-fi? Remember, the alleged original pitch of Star Trek was "Wagon Train to the stars.")

BTW, I agree with a lot of the rest of what you say (though I still think it's worthwhile to pay for cable, though that does wane a bit sometimes)..
However, for this part, just get a DVR. I've been avoiding virtually all commercials with DVRs (and VCRs before that) for decades.. Or rather, I avoid them after having seen at least entertaining ones once... or informative (movie ads) ones.
The onscreen bugs/animated ads bug me too, but that's been going on long before you 'gave up TV'.

Not really. I can't remember a single animated ad during a program before 2005. As for the logos I don't remember them at all before 2000 and certainly not 1995.
I can clearly remember that they started showing the logo for 10 seconds. Later on the logo became permanent. Then they added stuff around the logo like shows later playing. I stopped paying the money for cable around that time. I downloaded some shows on torrents like Stargate Atlantis. Others I just purchased the DVDs. I remember SciFi started to add the animated shit and it pissed me off so much that I stopped downloading the torrents and just waited for the DVDs to come out. At first I would get a torrent of the DVD, and then add it on Netflix when it came out. When the really good bundle deals come out for some shows I purchase them.
Netflix has made it a lot easier to actually pay for my content legitimately at a fair price.
As for the DVR, that would only be a consideration if they would completely eliminate the logos and animated ads. The $40 bucks I am forced to pay now I would consider reasonable if they would just get rid of that crap.

As a fan of the "Rambaldi" aspects of "Alias", I loved how that alone (Red Matter) tied into the ST reboot. I always wanted more Rambaldi story and that is what the reboot gave me a small bit of.
There needs to be a dedicated Rambaldi story so i can finally put it to bed!

I wouldn't say that's a one for one. I love Archer but do not like Venture Brothers at all. However, if you love Archer, check out the short lived Frisky Dingo...it was a fantastic show (by the same people) that no one watched. And then there's Sealab, but everyone watched that :p

Adult Swim makes a lot of crap (read: 98% of their self-made shows are crap). Venture Bros is one of the few that is entertaining, but some may not like it.

Heh, I love VB but don't understand the appeal of Archer at all. Every new show the Sealab guys do gets worse and Archer finally dropped below the acceptable quality for me. It seems far too obsessed with the cheap laugh, although it may have gotten better than the first few episodes.

I'm a bit more charitable: 75% is crap. ;-) Loves me some Venture Brothers, Metalocalypse and Robot Chicken. I still love Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's almost dadaist humor. Superjail is in the same vein. Would like to see them do another Sealab style show where they take an old toon and rework it.

Frisky Dingo was the Firefly of animated television. It never really had a chance, but was some of the most brilliant writing I've ever seen. Archer is carrying on well in that light though. Hell, apparently I'll watch anything with H. Jon Benjamin doing voice work. Lucy Daughter of the Devil is another awesome, but short lived show.

It's the kind of show that has to "grow on you". It takes a while to really see what it's about. And it's not really about the boys.
If you can make it through the first two season the season 2 finale is like the best episode ever. Really helps if you have the whole history of the different relationships between everybody going in though. Samson in that henchman uniform for instance. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Different strokes for different folks. I can watch VB as a show, but I don't think it's funny at all. I could see someone thinking the same about Archer, as the jokes are all subtle and based on timing.

I was very disappointed that Xtacles wasn't picked up for a full run. It was probably a combination of being both too adult, and too juvenile for network execs to understand why anyone would like it. Plus they spent $0 on promoting it.

I disagree. One of the movies (Beast With a Billion Backs) was lame, while the rest were good. The new season was hit and miss, but it seemed like towards the end the quality was more regular. I took that to be simply them getting back in the groove, because when they were on, it was every bit as good as before.

Katey Sagal jumped the gun, everyone was still in talks back then. Now the contracts have been actually signed.

And the episode airing on June 23 is the second half of the previous ordered episodes that have all already been made, not another season. Comedy Central just broke the last batch of episodes in half and aired them in two parts.

The season we're talking about here won't be ready until 2012.

I'm a huge Futurama fan; but after watching the first 5-6 episodes of this past "new" season I really thought they'd lost their touch. Fortunately, the last several episodes were actually decent, and even showed glimpses of the old magic - so there's hope for this upcoming set.

Having said that - I don't think any of the new episodes so far have come close to matching the original four seasons.

I think some did. The episode with Lrrr, for example, was brilliant and as good as any except the very cream of the original crop. Same for the robosexual marriage episode. A bunch of others were only OK overall, but had some amazing parts. The Scruffy and Wash Bucket scene had me in tears from laughing so hard. And honestly, that's in keeping with the original series run too. Not every episode was a gem, some were merely "Ehhhhhhh, it was ok," especially towards the beginning of the show. I also find that my appreciation for some of the episodes has gone up on repeat watching, so maybe I'll like them all more in time.

I think they're still getting back into their groove. The first few Season 6 episodes were them parsing their backlog of pop culture events that had occurred while they were away, and as they run out of edgy things to try, they'll go back to what people love them for. It's like a mid life crisis except with unexpected resurrection thrown in for good luck.

I don't know - I think Futurama has always had its misses. To me the worst is when they take the ship to the planet Allegoricon 8, the planet where everything that's going on exactly mimics something from the 20th or 21st century, but with a few minor changes.
"Attack of the Killer App" and "Proposition Infinity" come to mind as recent examples... "A Taste of Freedom" was in this vein as well.
But when the show is good, it's great. :)

It makes sense that the series is different, as all the writers are different.
The new writers just don't 'get' it. They misunderstand what was funny about the series.
An example would be the most recent Christmas episode. It was so full of Futurama cliches, and so full of BS, that I had to turn it off...

I love torchwood but the mini series was awful. They never explain what the 456 is or even why they want the children. Same goes for Doctor Who, love the weekly shows but can't stomach the christmas specials.

The children were used to produce drugs for the 456.

The christmas specials are always aimed at young children. They are god-awful but the true fans sit through them anyway because the material in them is included in canon. British TV, particularly the BBC, has a long tradition of producing awful sugary-sweet christmas specials. You think the Doctor Who ones are silly? Try watching the Are You Being Served christmas specials.

Futurama really shines when it takes a classic sci-fi story and give it a comic twist. Like The last season had The Late Philip J. Fry, which was almost directly cribbed from Flight to Forever by Poul Anderson. That seems like a pretty easy formula to follow so I hope they keep it up.

To be fair, that was SciFi channel bullshit. They found a way to (in their mind, or excuse for one) get two seasons out of one. That's how they managed to kill Caprica. Just before the show started to get interesting they split the first season and then never bothered to mention when it would be on again. As others have said, I'm not bothering to watch any more shows while they are on. I don't watch enough TV anyhow, so I prefer being able to watch them on DVD at my convenience.

Exactly. Lost gave me new respect for series with mostly standalone episodes. Star Trek TNG is still re-watchable, even though the quality varies. Lost is not. After a less than stunning "big reveal", all run-up plots become fatuous and tedious, particularly when there's hundreds of hours of them.

I guess I'm one of those who don't think every little thing needs to be answered. To be honest, it'll just be more made up fiction, so who really cares? It's not reality. There is no ultimate truth to be revealed about anything. It's all made up.

The show ended with a bug "fuck you" and a laugh, having never answered almost all the questions it painfully went about forcing in their face and asking.

That's just taking it way to seriously. I like the show as I watched it. So what if they didn't show the schematics for the ancient device where the little river flowed? You said you didn't see it, though, so your knowledge is presumably second hand. They actually answered quite a bit. I really think the hostility from many was just backlash that you get with anything popular. Anyone who actually got angry needs psychological help.
