Android Approved By Pentagon
sfcrazy writes "The Pentagon has approved a version of Android running on Dell hardware to be used by DoD officials, along with the BlackBerry. The approval of Android by the DoD is a major setback for Apple's iPhone. This doesn't mean that DoD employees can use any Android phone. The Pentagon has approved only Dell's hardware running Android 2.2. Interestingly Dell recently discontinued its Streak phone which runs Android 2.2. Dell is now offering Dell Venue which runs on Android 2.2. So, this is the phone which DoD employees can use."

It sounds like from the article they're going to fork Android. Talk about fragmentation. They need to build a solution from the ground up, otherwise it's going to be a mess to maintain or support.
It starts with a step, hopefully won't end with just that.
... I have a hard time believing the open-source-ness of Android played any real part in the decision, no matter what TFA says. Someone at Dell made the right deal with the right people at the Pentagon.
The correlation between ignorance of statistics and using "correlation is not causation" as an argument is close to 1.
Actually, DOD employees have been allowed to use iOS devices since November with approval of their CIOs, and the same 'blanket' approval which Android 2.2 just received is forthcoming. So much FUD....

I've always wondered how the military et al cope with things like Carrier IQ. Do they get special builds of iOS and Android that exclude it? How do they keep top secret data from leaking out to third parties?

Why is this a "major setback" for the iPhone? Why do Android fans take such glee in sniping like this in press releases? This is great news for Android and great news for choice in a major government space. Why does it have to be a major setback to anyone?

The idea that Windows' source code is some massive secret is rather funny. It is closed source, but it is no secret. Not only do governments have it (which they require if it is to be used for anything classified) but universities do too. MS licenses it to various universities with some conditions. Students can see it and mess with it, but not copy it and that kind of thing.
Any OS the DoD is going to use, they'll have the code for. So to them Windows and Android are no different in that regard.
Perhaps they just decided to use the Android version that Dell is doing with China.... It was only a matter of time before the Chinese were doing the software for the DOD....
iDevices and Blackberries have robust, whole-device encryption and remote-wipe capabilities.

Has Dell implemented something special for its phones? If so, that represents a rare differentiator in the Android world.
With said source, you need actual EXPERIENCED coders (and time) to TRULY "get the hang of it" & what's going on inside it... Windows NT, the forerunner/ancestor of modern Windows OS'? Last I knew of, it had 30 million++ lines of code (means TIME, bigtime, to understand)... it's not gotten smaller in modern varieties either (think Win7/Srv2k8).
Which is, after all, EXACTLY why the MOST DANGEROUS "hacker/cracker" types, are coders... because only coders, experienced ones (not 'script kiddies') mind you, have the understanding of these things!
(Not just "any coders" either - what's required's actually, a "combined threat" type, that understands coding AND networking + OS' & how to use them @ the "lowest levels" - takes YEARS to DECADES too, & on many OS (though the principles of them ALL are pretty much the same & they access the same types of hardware + networks too)).
Those are the guys you have to "look out for" (& then again, so does the NSA/CIA etc., because they're what they recruit!)

P.S.=> However - The main thing closed source OS have going for them's that NOT EVERYONE HAS THEIR CODE, & I'll tell you, right now/point-blank, that finding "security holes" in "OPEN SORES" code's a hell of a lot simpler/easier than in closed source stuff & especially "for the masses" (because ANYONE can get say, Linux' code, & a compiler + "step trace" thru it for finding said potential "bugs"). That's simpler, faster, & EASIER than trying to disassemble or use a "fuzzer" on closed source code...

When you can show that you've got nearly 18 yrs. of hands-on experience in BOTH coding + networking & security as I have professionally (as well as a slew of "decent accomplishments" noted in respectable trade magazines, books, tech trade shows to your name as I have had for decades now (when I gave a "hoot" about that kind of thing as a younger man that is so I could get things on my resume of that nature in the beginning days for me when it matters most))?

E.G.-> The 1st one was the "best buy" I could find in fact, Jesuit professors galore - the "educated elite" of the Catholic Church in fact (sort of blacksheep though)...
I am not from a wealthy family, I couldn't "buy my way in" (I was National Honor Society outta highschool too), but I had the grades to go ANYWHERE I wanted really... just not the cash!
Also, @ the time in those days, & as far as schools go?
WELL... "The infamous they" often state that the best ones in the nation are in that area, & I was there on combined athletic/academic partial scholarships too, in a sport they've been a NATIONAL CHAMP in, & I was a lettering NCAA starter as a Freshman too no less (which again, is more than the "trolling likes of you" probably can ever say)...
Still, bottom-line on schooling is, what YOU make of it, & I've professionally worked with guys that only have an A.A.S. who blew AWAY guys I knew with B.S.!

To be good-to-great @ computing, or really, ANYTHING? No questions asked - You have to practically "LIVE IT" & talent/smarts/intelligence?? It's NOT ENOUGH!
Again - SCHOOLING's WHAT YOU MAKE IT... no questions asked, & it's ONLY THE START... you learn FAR MORE IN THE WORKING WORLD, by far (and eventually, on your own too).

Except, Android devices generally do. When you attach an Android phone to a Microsoft Exchange account, the administrator of the Exchange server can remote-wipe the phone.
Also, there is native whole-device encryption available for Android. The carriers generally do not enable it, though.

There was a time long ago when DoD employees were not allowed to own a cell-phone let alone bring one into a SCIF.

I am very small, utmostly microscopic.
The reality is that DOD has issued a Secure Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) that must be followed if you are trying to get a Designated Approving Authority (DAA) to issue an Approval To Operate (ATO). Actually implementing a secure architecture and getting approval for sensitive unclass, much less classified is a whole different issue.
I guarantee that approval means the user will not have Android market access and will not be able to arbitrarily install applications. Depending on the setup, an approved android phone may very well have less capability than a Blackberry.
Seek professional help.

We had to deal with the STIG for windows for one project a while back.
We ended up hiring a consultant. Anyhow, I was annoyed at first at all
the details, but after taking a closer look I have to say most of what's in
there makes sense. Not a bad reference if you need to lock a box down.
New years project is to convince management we need to port to android
so I get them to buy me a tablet.
Linux took these things/way of doing things from Windows NT-based OS:

1.) Completion ports concept for scheduling - Linux process scheduling methods are now VERY similar to NT-based OS' completion ports!
2.) Threads being present @ the kernel level in Linux is a direct copy of what has always been there in NT-based OS (for SMP purposes mainly imo). They used to have "usermode"/rpl 3/ring 3 "threads" in Linux, BUT, they were all "round-robin run" from a SINGLE 1 kernelmode/ring 0/rpl 0 thread there... not true multithreading really & certainly NOT SMP ready!
E.G. -> Early on, circa 1994-1996, LinuxThreads, if you used say, ps or top?
Would show a MAD FLOOD of processes & forks, vs. threads, showing SOMETHING was wrong right there if the tools for monitoring this had problems with it!
Also, on LinuxThreads? ThreadCreation was MAD EXPENSIVE, SLOW, as well as context switching being the same... This is, iirc, 8-10x less expensive now on Linux and thus because of all of the above!
Because of the above though? Well - Linux is now SMP & enterprise ready...

Windows took the following from Linux:
1.) Windows NT-based OS later moved http.sys into kernelmode/ring 0/rpl 0 level operations from Linux (so webserving could be more efficient & faster)...
2.) Windows via Terminal Services (ala watered-down licensed technology from Citrix) does what X has been doing for year on UNIX (Linux too), which is remotely runnable applications & desktops. Directory Services aren't original to Windows either - Novell had them before Windows & Citrix did via NDS (Novell Directory Services))

This seems to say that there was only one reason, and it's due to the open source nature of Android. If this was the only reason, why did they also continue to support Blackberry?

And yep, so does Android. And Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry, and Symbian, and any other AGPS system. Locationgate was a big deal only because people made it so. The "app" that was written to show the problem didn't actually plot the correct data, it "obscured it to protect people". The unobscured data would have shown it was simply the locations of cell towers and wifi spots, not where the phone was. Buy hey, why let facts that have been well known for over a year get in the way of posting a sensationalized story a year+ down the road.

We need a Jon Stewart of the tech world to at least make fun of these types of horribly inaccurate stories to get some entertainment value out of them. And on a side note, it's sad how many people giddily blast Fox News for always being inaccurate and sensational, while also liking the exact type of inaccurate and sensational stories in the tech world.

Since they're "low level prizes" as you called them (commercially sold software code to my name that was a finalist @ MS TechEd 2000-2002, 2 yrs. in a row no less in its HARDEST CATEGORY & being featured in Windows IT Pro magazine isn't what I'd call "low level") & again: It's certainly MORE than you can show YOU HAVE DONE, now isn't it? 1.) Education (from a good school despite your saying it was 'shitty' & documented information showed QUITE otherwise on that account from a reputable source no less (most esteemed there is on that account in fact))
2.) On accomplishments in computing oriented things that did well in the eyes of others in respected publications, tech trade shows, commercially sold software by a certified MS partner to my credit/name,& more...

Millions of people, 94.5% of the worlds' PC desktops alone (let alone servers running Windows ontop of that) shows anyone that Windows is a target used enough to be targetted for malicious attacks... Linux doesn't HAVE enough usership/marketshare to justify attacking it on PC desktops!
HOWEVER - ANDROID, a linux variant that's widely used on smartphones, SHOWS QUITE OTHERWISE & that once Linux can no longer hide behind 'security-by-obscurity'? It gets MAULED BY MALWARE & exploits, weekly!

When they state my source is widely known, & referred to? They are a GREAT source to bolster my rebuttals which blew you away on your stating the academic institution I graduated from was "shitty" (#18 in top northeast schools, where the best US schools are, & #9 in "best buy/bang for the buck" too!).
In fact, I'll cite them again now on this very note!
Wikipedia states this on their website about USNews, verbatim:
