Banned From Kickstarter For Being Cyberstalked
An anonymous reader writes "Rachel Marone has been a victim of cyberstalking for over 10 years. In 2011, she had a project on Kickstarter shut down because of the high volume of spam posted by the stalker in the comment section of the project. Recently, Marone's manager spoke to Kickstarter again to see how she could avoid having a new project banned if the cyberstalker showed up again. They replied, 'If there is any chance that Rachel will receive spam from a stalker on her project, she should not create one. We simply cannot allow a project to become a forum for rampant spam, as her past project became. If this happens again, we will need to discard the project and permanently suspend Rachel's account.' On her website, Marone sums up the situation thus: 'I am being told that I cannot crowdfund because I am a stalking victim. ... With so many women being stalking targets this does not seem reasonable to me.'"
While I hate to resort to tit-for-tat tactics, the obvious answer here is to spam all the founders' accounts.
Because, quite simply, that's 100% undiluted B.S.
Now she got Slashdotted too.
The solution is clear, start posting high volumes of messages on all the other projects for supporting kickstarter, an organization that clearly supports 'cyber bullying'. I would imagine that after a significant amount of projects have been shut down, they'd turn around and actually fix the problem properly.
Change is certain; progress is not obligatory.
According to her she was banned by Facebook too. Methinks there is more behind this story.
the inability to comprehend the situation and the lack of enthusiasm in dealing with it in a forthright and efficient manner speaks volumes about kickstarters management culture. they sound like a bunch of incompetent buffoons.
"i represent an unbearable burden on some system and am upset that they won't accomidate me"
You're an idiot and should be kicked in the nuts.
"Have you ever thought about just turning off the TV, sitting down with your politician, and hitting them?"
So... What are you wearing?
Change is certain; progress is not obligatory.
Hey I have a guy that follows me around and vandalizes the building I live in. Can I stay at your place?
No mod points at the min - so will ask a question :)
Is this taken from another quote? [please excuse my ignorance - am genuinely interested]
Don't blame the website for not wanting to put up with your baggage. Blame the stalker. Take legal matters in your own hands and go after him/her.
Why can't Kickstarter allow for projects to disable comments?
People who avoid victims because they don't want to deal with the fallout are the worst kind of cowards. And in your hypothetical situation the answer is easy - just like in this situation with kickstarter.
What the people running the service have done is send a world wide message that anyone can control their service by destroying projects at will.
Of course they will back track very soon. They'll have to, but the mind reels trying to figure out how they did not see this correctly in the first place.
It's hard to believe that's how Micronians are made. Why don't we see it right now by having you both kiss one another?
Now she got Slashdotted too.
Isn't that interesting?
Looking at her websites and everything, she looks like one of those artsy people that would benefit incredibly from exposure. Actually, anyone doing any sort of business on the net needs exposure to get noticed.
Over the last decade, I've become extremely cynical about things like this.
If she were really getting threats and people were posting illegal things like child pornography as she said, then the cops would be involved to go after this guy and take him out. But no. Things are continuing for some reason and here she is getting all this free publicity and hits on her website.
Read up on any of the "Gorilla Marketing" type of books out there and you too will become cynical of any sort of public exposure.
From her website:
In my How Facebook Deleted My Ass article I discussed how my account was deleted because I was accused of impersonating myself.
. I don't consider FB to be that credible either, but then again, I wonder what made them come to that conclusion?
And if she is in fact truly being stalked, I blame the marketing people of the World for making public exposure of any sort a cheap way to market products, services, people, art, etc ...
After all, we do live in a World where people actually burn themselves to death to bring attention to issues. What's a little cyber-stalking?
This can lead to complete abuse (being able to shut down basically any and all projects at will) leading to the destruction of kickstarter. A simple solution would be to tie accounts to bank accounts/credit cards or whatnot, and have it verified by charging something like $0.35 (deal with transaction fee). That makes both the act of creating accounts and having accounts banned much more costly. Since this is a crowd funding program, this wouldn't be too much of a burden for the users are they will be dealing with money anyways.
Indeed. It is up to the police and judicial system to stop her stalkers, not her employer to accommodate it continuing.
It's not like she hasn't been given time by her employer already, but at some point they have to put the foot down and say "no more".
Yes, she's a victim. But she also seems unwilling to or incapable of leaving the role of a victim. I hope I am wrong, and that she pursues justice with as much vigor as the stalker pursues her, and that in 2012, the stalking will end.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm simply appalled that they would even SAY THAT. I'm not really that surprised though, as I've been on the receiving end of Kickstarter's questionable behavior as well.
I submitted a Kickstarter for a generic USBHID interface board (For making game controllers and input devices, though it really had tons of applications) and they rejected it for no reason. When pressed for an explanation, they said "Kickstarter is for creative arts projects and [my] project did not fit."
So, I guess having a DOZEN Kickstarters for Arduino clones going at any given time is okay, but if someone wants to make something that hasn't been run into the ground yet, fuck 'em! I mean, wow! I was only trying to get $500 together!
Friend: "The NIC is misconfigured..." Me: "No prob, I'll just telnet in and fix it." *Silence*

Kickstarter isn't an employer, what are you talking about?
Change is certain; progress is not obligatory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came%E2%80%A6 One on my favorites.
Ah, the crowd mind. It never ceases to boggle the mind how the sum of us can be so more stupid than any individual.
If you want to contact someone, contact the police and politicians, who are in a position to get the stalking stopped.
Instead the hive mind wants Kickstarter to accommodate the stalker. How clever.
Kickstarter, throw her out, whether she deserves it, or not.
While I think that Kickstarter could have handled it better; read the article on her website.
She got spam comments and she replied to them. She claims that she was being stalked and she recognised the stalker: why reply ? Just report them. You're not supposed to feed trolls.
It is clear the reason she got kicked off because she got interacted with the spammer and was part of the problem.
And WTF is a "transmedia artist" ? She uses various media, multimedia ?
I know kickstarter is going to get a lot of negative feelings about this, but I can't blame them for their decision. Look at all the crazy lawsuits that happen and succeed... such as a person suing the owner of the house they are robbing, after they injure themselves during the crime... there is a chance that if they allowed a project to go forward, knowing that it could provide a new forum for cyberstalking against someone with a long history or it, then kickstarter risks a liability lawsuit.
This isn't discrimination, it's just declining to serve a customer (which a businesses has every right to do) for a reason that has some merit to it. They don't want to be part of a bad situation and don't want to risk involvement or any form of responsibility for it. It sucks, but it's not unreasonable
I see. And the stalker who's actually doing all the spamming? Gets away free, right?
Oh yeah, that's fair.
Screw kickstarters and go somewhere else, or assume an alias.
I don't know how "typical"/common-to-type, but I too smell a whiner. 10 years of cyberstalking isn't harassment, it is symbiosis. "Co-dependency" in PC-speak. I find it beyond incredible that a computer-savvy person would be stalked that long without identification and intervention by law enforcement.
OTOH, any site that complains of spamming needs to require registration or grow a pair. The cost of allowing anon is some spam tolerence, or filters of some sort. Banning positive contributors (is she?) enters the death spiral -- rewarding bad behaviour.
Seriously, I don't see what Rachel has done wrong here. The world sucks when a person is punished for being the victim of someone's insanity, insecurity, and inability to cope with the real world. When I read about incidents like this I don't want to live in this world anymore.
Hey I have a guy that follows me around and vandalizes the building I live in. Can I stay at your place?
Sure. I live in Texas. We have the Castle Doctrine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine I own several guns. Bring chips.
Note that arrest is also possible.
Just because you wouldn't do that doesn't mean there are those who would extend hospitality to friends and acquaintances in need.
I read TFA and all I got was this lousy cookie
But it seems like kickstarter has a service that's vulnerable to a fairly simple attack. Unless this stalker controls a huge botnet, how much spam posts can he really make on their forum? Why not let her moderate her forum to see if it gets out of hand?
And don't they have any sort of anti-abuse systems? Limit posts per day. Wait X minutes before another post. Per user limits. Per IP limits. Captchas. Moderated sub-forum that requires posts to be allowed. There are quite a number of options.
"i represent an unbelievable PR opportunity to kickstarter in catching a criminal, and am surprised they are lazy"
Actually, not that surprised.
I can't, it's wireless!
Change is certain; progress is not obligatory.
And who's going to sit down with local PD detectives and spend 2 hours explaining to them how anyone can send an email as billclinton@whitehouse.gov and not actually be the former president?
Instead the hive mind wants Kickstarter to accommodate the stalker. How clever.
No one want Kickstarter to accommodate the stalker. How about they put a little effort into blocking the spam ? What kind of internet startup can't deal with a spam problem ? Blaming the victim because your system isn't set up to deal with abuse is out of order.
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.
It's very possible that this is all a bs story on her part and she's just whoring for attention.
Kickstarter may have made the right call.
Reddit uncovered some more info about her, that doesn't paint her in a very good light:

Unless this stalker controls a huge botnet, how much spam posts can he really make on their forum?
Do not underestimate the obsessive. Example, one dutch woman stalked a guy and called him 65000 times in a year :
"A look at the statistical breakdown of the woman’s phone-calling habits sheds light on the multiple cellphones seized in the raid of her home.
To reach 65,000 calls, the woman had to have called 178 times a day. That’s nearly eight calls an hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week or one phone call every eight minutes, without ever stopping."
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.
Apologies for any confusion this might have caused.
"Employer" has many meanings - it's not just the person who pays your wages or salary, but also who provides you with an opportunity to or facilities for doing the work, or supervises it.
Those who use my software are in one sense my employers, and when I work on a project under the umbrella of a distro, they are in many ways my employer, for lack of a better word. They can request and OK my work, and certainly should supervise it.
And stop accommodating me if I waste their time and resources.
Is there a better word than "employer"? Probably - I may just have a brain fart here.
As you all know I have a rockin' tight ass, a successful project on Kickstarter that you've all funded, and a cyberstalker that goes by the name of FrankSinatraDirtyTalker1915@comcast.net.
I originally met "Frank" back in College, where we dated for a bit. I should point out that he's not an old man, as his username might imply, but rather someone who is simply obsessed with Frank Sinatra and my gorgeous rockin hard ass.
Anyway, when I broke up with him he took it pretty badly. It was our Sophomore year at Rice University and I had just discovered gravity bongs and going down on another girl while blazed out of my gord. As I've admitted, these were confusing albeit fun times for me.
Meanwhile, "Frank" was raised as a Mormon but had recently converted to Scientology. I guess you might say he was experimenting with his own hallucinogenic homoerotic drug. This drug/sex/cult cocktail, combined with my round pulchritudinous derriere, and the sudden shock of losing his ability to play his daily role of dressing up as Dr. Parnassus while gently fondling my perky nipples and supple breasts that he had affectionately named the Merry Mammary Sisters of Nippopolis, and Queens of the Breastiary - led to Frank's complete mental breakdown.
I don't blame Frank for my rockin body, just as I don't blame you for being attracted to my intelligence and funding my project on Kickstarter. However, what I do not like is being stalked. I hope you all do what I do when you see Frank's messages on any thread related to my project. Just lick your index finger, point it at Frank's username and then say, "Ooooooooooooo ICE COLD! Mama thinks you're a BAAAAD BOYYYY! OOOOOO Ice Cold..." then point the same finger back at your left nipple and make a sizzling sound "SSSSSssssssssssss" and sing this little rap
Thank you all again for funding my project on Kickstarter. You're clearly invested in a winner!

Wow, so tense, bro. Clearly you've never heard of this thing called "humor".
Change is certain; progress is not obligatory.
My first impression of the situation described in the summary is it sounds somewhat similar to a web host shutting down a user's account because their site was a magnet for DDoS attacks - a response which would be uncontroversial. Another analogy that comes to mind is the removal of users' comments in a discussion forum, following a legal threats to the site operator.
The fundamental similarity in all three circumstances seems to be the website operator not wanting to deal with a website user's "baggage", as an earlier poster here termed it. But the next question in my mind is what the differences are in the Kickstart case. Notwishtanding the fact that it's "their site, their rules", is there a point at which nature of the "baggage" may be trivial enough to deal with (e.g. a user being targeted by a spammer, rather than a DDoS botnet) that it's fair to criticise the website operator for being too ready to wash their hands of the victim?
With an average death rate compared with other states, the Castle Doctrine doesn't appear to be making much of difference.
Nice law though - invite someone into your home, and blow their head off. Claim they had broken in. Profit!
I don't mean to be an ass, but that's a natural survival instinct. You don't get into the fight between people you don't know unless you see with absolute certainty that one is a victim. And even then, things are often not as they would seem from the first glance.
That's what police is for in modern society. If you can stop the immediate fight, do it, but get authorities involved. Not yourself. Which is what the site in question did, it stopped the immediate fight by banning the account and informed the known active party (note that she actively participated in those spam threads) that this behaviour will be stopped and that she should not engage in it again if she doesn't want that fight being stopped by banning again.
I honestly don't see anything done wrong. Sure, if it's really as bad as the woman says, it's terrible for her and she should go to the police and really file a complaint with copies of "child porn and infant rape fantasies" she claims she's being sent. But it's not other people's job to take significant commercial losses because she chooses to take the fight to their shop. They also have a right to conduct business without such fights
You bloody trade unionist bastard!
Stalking isn't the same as spam, trust me.
Not jumping through hoops to do what a victim wants isn't blaming the victim.
Sure. I live in Texas.
Cool
I own several guns.
That was assumed from the previous statement. In fact I thought it was mandatory.
'The tyrant will always find pretext for his tyranny.' - Aesop's Fables
She makes claims that "police say he's too good for them and FBI won't investigate". Something I personally find very hard to believe considering she's claiming that he's systemically sending "her and hundreds of other victims child porn and infant rape fantasies".
Someone who doesn't fuck up when massively sending crap like that to hundreds of recipients for a decade? That's inhuman. And on top of the cake, her letters with the moderators clearly state that she actively talked to this stalker on their site.
I find it completely credible that stalking could go on for a long time and that law enforcement wouldn't help at all. Many years ago my girlfriend had a stalker. He was leaving weird messages on her car at home and at work and showed signs of escalating like messages on her bedroom window, which was in the back of the house. We went to the police with the notes, a summary of when and where things had been done as well as the text of the law against stalking and they refused to take a report. Her employer didn't like someone coming on to their property to harass an employee, so they had one of their attorneys do all of the paperwork and force the police to take a report. The guy was identified and convicted of stalking. Stalking is ignored by law enforcement until after the victim is raped or killed, then it can be used as evidence of pre-meditation.
Hey keep your stalkers and pedos for yourself. We have plenty of our own here...
Yes and no... It comes from a 1955 book about the rise of and life under the Nazi's.
Wikipedia has a decent if superficial article on the phrase.
I f I'm received at your house for dinner and someone comes knocking the door to threaten me, well, it's your house. You're the owner and entitled to defend it -- not a visitor like me. And no, it's no solution to push me outside so the stalker can go with what is wanted (btw, this would be very coward, like others say).>/quote>
Not inviting you a second time unless you have had the problem taken care of seems to me to be a sensible thing to do. And what Kickstarter did.
And not inviting you ever again, problem solved or not, if you weren't upfront about the danger to my home the first time around. Kickstarter hasn't been that uncompromising. I would be.
Kickstarter should view this as a chance to build up their defenses, if the spam flood comes. When will they get around to doing that, when they've grown large, about to issue an IPO, or sell to someone? It seems to me that they're sticking their heads in the sand a bit in this instance.
Agreed. TEN YEARS of stalking, yet she has the time and means to crowdfund a project. Interdasting...
Python: 'And then suddenly you have a language which says "we're all stuck with whatever the whiniest coder wants".'
What they've done wrong - removing all morality from the issue - is what I've mentioned above. They've publicly declared that anyone can keep any other person (or people) from using their service. They've made it unworkable. Just think, if I was a nut-case and your reply right here put me off the deep end, I could keep you from ever being able to use kickstarter.
I disagree with your framing this as a fight. Being stalked is not a fight. She says she's gone to law enforcement and they are unwilling or unable to stop this person.
There could be more to this from either side obviously. And more information might change how I feel about this case - but beyond this specific instance victims of crime should not be further punished by others because they fear the criminal. That may be an instinctual response but it is ultimately more harmful. Handing the criminal all the power is not going to make them go away, it will just make things worse.
It's hard to believe that's how Micronians are made. Why don't we see it right now by having you both kiss one another?

Yes, because we all know the cops will get RIGHT ON IT.
it took a LONG time to get Mabus, a cyberstalker/harasser who went after prominent atheists. And only because he was prominent.
If you're some person on the internet of little notoriety, good luck trying to get the authorities to do ANYTHING. It's not codependency if you're actively trying to get rid of this person out of your life.
Non impediti ratione cogitationus.
TFA seems to imply that she was banned for "engaging" with the spammer (over 300 times!) and not for being spammed, so I think they're totally justified in banning her.
You misunderstand. Talking back to the spammer actively is fighting. Not being passively stalked.
She's former, not the latter, this is spelled out very clearly in her conversation with moderators.
KickStarter is not the only player - just saying.

There's more, but most of them are very 'fund-my-life' or are platforms that are quite deadish.
And if you want to roll your own, give IgnitionDeck (wordpress plugin) a shot.
KickStarter may be the most popular, but IndieGoGo gets a good chunk of traffic as well. That would be my second choice.
I didn't find any information on your idea at your homepage, but if you'd still be interested in making it, make sure you put in shameless plugs in your comments.
I believe you have to contact your mobile provider to block the number meanwhile you can buy new pay-as-you-go sim cards in every corner shop for very little money and the woman, unsurprisingly, had several cellphones.
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.
Indeed, and posting a variant of it on a public forum is considered a variant of Godwin's law.
Sometimes it may be appropriate, but most of the time (like here), it isn't.

I had occasion to fly into Ft. Worth some time back, and was struck by the fact that then, a couple of years AFTER 9/11, they apparently found it necessary to have signs instructing everyone not to bring their guns in the airport.

Wait what the fuck? She personally KNOWS this guy? The guy who "is sending child porn and infant rape fantasies to hundreds of women"? Guy who is "too good for police to catch"?
I call massive bullshit and obvious attention whore enjoying the attention.
They did the only sensible thing, and ban her. She's certifiably nuts. They didn't ban her because of her stalker. The OP should have researched this a lot better.
Talking back to a genuine, real-life stalker is a very bad idea. Stalkers are generally certifiably mentally ill. They have a delusion that involves the victim. Any contact, any attention, feeds that delusion. That's one of the reasons you show never engage directly with a stalker.
Got them moderator blues I blieve I walk out the do', With these mod-points I been gettin', I 'most never post no mo'
Profit my ass... You will be arrested, even in a justified shooting. The least it will cost is about $10,000 but it often goes to $100,000. My life is worth that much, but most of my stuff is not. And that was intentional. Taking life should never be easy...
It is how the law is written. If you do not have a specific sign, you can not legally bar concealed weapons from the premises.
1: If he's so good and untraceable that the police can't track him down, how can anyone know he's been sending stuff to hundreds of victims? Each case will be untraceably separate.
2: Stalkers are not indiscriminate. Genuine stalkers get fixated on a particular individual. Hundreds of victims isn't "stalking" it's just being a serial ar$€hole.
Got them moderator blues I blieve I walk out the do', With these mod-points I been gettin', I 'most never post no mo'
Here in Wisconsin you can actually bring a licensed concealed weapon into an airport, as long as they don't have signs prohibiting it and you don't try to take it past the security checkpoint.
This is now true of any businesses except schools and some government buildings. It is actually legal to carry a concealed weapon into the capitol building, even while the government is in session.
If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can't be taken on its own merits
Is it really possible to cyberstalk an attention whore?
semantics are everything!
I know this is not the case in Canada. The RCMP can NOT refuse to let you file a complaint, though they may well warn you that it's unlikely to result in an investigation or criminal charges if that's their assessment of your complaint.
But Canadian authorities can not and will not outright REFUSE to let you file a complaint unless you're drunk and ignorant or clearly in need of mental health treatment. It's part and parcel of Charter of Rights legislation that demands equal and fair treatment from the law and from government.
Nor have I ever known anyone in the US who was similarly rejected when they filed a complaint. But I DO know of SEVERAL cases where the charges were dropped by the accuser after they "reconciled" with the stalking ex.
That's one big difference here in Canada. Once you file a complaint, it's in police hands. You can NOT drop the charges because you aren't LAYING the charges -- the police do.
I do not fail; I succeed at finding out what does not work.
Rachel "Haywire" aka "Marone" aka "Mendelson" is a well known con artist, grifter and volcano of libel. She also collects an SSDI check for mental disability.
Ms. Jaeger:
It has come to my attention that Rachel Mendelson aka "Rachel Marone" aka "Rachel Haywire" aka "Transhuman X" may be allowed to use kickstarter again only 2 years after she took $3,000 with a fraudulent kickstarter effort. People are angrily posting on this page even as of a few months ago, and she has no plans to print the CD or to make any of the charitable contribution percentage she promised from this project. Please do not allow her to make any more kickstarter efforts, and defraud more people. Here is the page and the comments from people who never got their CD from her. By kickstarter's own rules, she should be required to return the donations at this point, not start a new fraudulent kickstarter campaign. She is very likely to start a new kickstarter account called 'Rachel Marone', be aware she is abusing kickstarter for financially fraudulent purposes.

I've been reading her PR. It looks like she did a small arts festival, and wants to do something else. She's tried being in a band, writing magazine articles, modeling, and organizing events. But no one is paying attention. There's little about her written by anyone else.
Sometimes she gets it right. Read her "John Galt is homeless", a brief reply to Ayn Rand. "We need to face the fact that Randian capitalism is no longer a way to advance oneself but a way to make oneself poor. The roles have now been reversed and it is no longer survival-of-the-fittest but survival-of-the-most-willing-to-please."
I've met so many people like that in the SF art scene. They're wild, crazy, fun, and can't quite make it. They tend to end up bitter by age 35.
There is no proof that the comment was written by Malone. But we should attribute it to her anyway! Because!
Obviously you only do it to black men.
Apparently the police just take you at your word in that case. Of course you have to make sure the media doesn't get wind of it.
The proof is popping up as we speak, more and more of it. I suggest reading the rest of the reddit in question, or just reading this slashdot post (not mine):
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2786853&cid=39685615
Why cant she file a report with the police or even the FBI?
Jack of all trades, master of none
That and she apparently knows the person IRL, so the whole idea that he is too good to catch is pretty implausible. It is more likely the stalker is a sock puppet she created to banter with.
Quite true, though in this case throwing kiddy porn in the mix would normally get the police's attention.
Once again, this is not a public service nor a public right. If a private company like kickstarter doesn't or can't or chooses not to support an action which they believe will be ineffective (i.e. unprofitable), then that's the end of the game. There's nothing wrong with that.
As for the conclusion that therefore she cannot growdfund anything, that's just stupid. There are other sites, and she can always roll her own. She's already got more publicity than I've ever had. Boo hoo that this one supplyer won't work for you. Move on.
I read the reddit post before I posted the first time, and it did not have a link to primary material. Therefor, it's a post on reddit not actual evidence.
Could she be a self-aggrandizing drama queen? Sure. Likely she is. She might also be lying about how things are going down with Kickstarter. We'd need some more data to figure that out.
Do we have a reason to believe that she posted the material quoted on reddit? Nope.
I'm pretty curious to know if Kickstarter will block projects that get spammed/stalked. Aren't you?
Don't know. Why don't you ask her. I would have known from her name, but as you can see in the article, she had to stress it:
With so many women playing the women card it seems reasonable to me to tell her: F**k you.
Not at all. I see a project which got spammed with active participation of a project maker. Stalking clearly has no relevance to the the ban, and is only used as an angle to attack the site by the attention whore in question.
Some how modern lawyers are still suing people even though people signed waivers that should have protected them from liability. Simple things like people slipping on ice at an ice rink when there is a sign above that says "slippery"... Then the hot coffee situation where someone sued McDonalds because they burned themselves on hot coffee. It's just stupid. I'm sure kickstarter is worried about liability. That's the only rational reason I can think they're nervous about this... make this girl sign a waiver. Make her parents sign it. Make the f'ing justice system sign it so that it's made very god damn clear that if the girl is stalked and then gang raped by 4chan through kickstarter... it isn't kickstarter's fault.
This extends to a thousand other issues in our society. If you sign a waiver... they're not liable. Period. Want to go hug a wild bear? Sign this waiver. If the bear decapitates you, then that isn't my fault.
Just take some personal responsibility. If this girl isn't worried about being stalked then clearly she either wants to be stalked or isn't afraid. Absolve kickstarter of liability and then have fun with the drooling stalkers.
I've decided to stop wasting my time responding to AC trolls/sockpuppets... so if you want a response from me... login.

In Florida you can't bring a concealed weapon to any hospital, government building, school (private or public), and a few other places as well. In the case of schools, you cannot even have one concealed in your car in the parking lot without the permission of the school. Personally, I feel like the faculty of a university ought to be able to bring stun guns and other "non-lethal" weapons, but they cannot. Anyway, this is all off topic!
It could become a valuable tactic for completing companies. After all if Newscorp will hack competitors set top boxes and release instructions on how to watch for free in order to stamp out competition, many people will certainly post "nuisance comments"

Unfortunately, she's lying.
On her website, she makes 2 contradictory claims on the same page:
and
So, the police can't track him down even though she has his address to try to serve him with restraining orders for 10 years? (never mind that you can't "duck" being served a restraining order for 10 years - you just go back to court, convince the judge that the person is actively seeking to not being served, they publish the notice in the paper that an order affecting them has been deposited with the court, end of story).
This is so obviously a complete fake ... but let's now throw in this - from the same page
She used a new sock-puppet account to post this on reddit, and simultaneously submitted it anonymously here, as her latest self-promotion campaign, and/or to try to get kickstarter to let her do another project despite not delivering on her last one, even though it was funded.
The problem of cyber-stalking is real enough. Just not in this phony case.
Let's call it what it is, Anti-Social Media.
Not just likely. She's been doing it for years and years ...
http://www.side-line.com/side-line-forum/topic/beware-mentally-challenged-person-on-gothindustrial-messageboards#post-19422She accuses a band of being Nazi white supremists, starts up an online petition against them, and on the petition, deletes comments that point out one of the band members is black.
And then this current round of self-promotion, spammed to reddit (the original post was a sock-puppet account, quickly deleted) and here (anon submission at the same time), with some lies about being cyber-stalked, which she describes here: http://experimenthaywire.net/is-there-a-solution-to-cyberstalking/
On the one hand, she claims that the guy has been sitting in his basement for a decade ducking restraining orders (which isn't how it works); a few paragraphs down, she says the cops can't locate him. I'm sure the police have access to a street map.
She got funded by kickstarter a few years ago, didn't deliver what was promised, and now claims that she was banned because she's been cyber-stalked. It's more likely that her history of over-the-top behaviour directed at so many people brought all the negative comments, and her "don't believe them, it's all from one crazy cyber-stalker using multiple identities and impersonating everyone in the music industry" was her way of trying to avoid the consequences.
Let's call it what it is, Anti-Social Media.
Except it's likely a fabrication and she's a con artist and a mental case.
The world's burning. Moped Jesus spotted on I50. Details at 11.
Interesting, thank you for the links. Sounds like she's a scammer.
Kickstarter doesn't accept all projects. It accepts those that are likely to succeed, and will reflect well on itself, and by proxy future projects. If her project is inundated by a stalker, then it doesn't reflect well on Kickstarter or its other projects.
Now, what actions could Kickstarter take to rectify this?
It could assign staff to moderate the project. Her project appears small, in the low three figures. Kickstarter takes only 5%, so their revenue is in the tens of dollars. A dedicated stalker can easily dodge automated blocking and tie up more resources than is financially viable for them to dedicate to her project. Thus, this is not an option.
Kickstarter could decide not to accept pre paid/gift credit cards and thus prevent the stalker from simply buying a new, $10 card each time his account gets banned. Not only would this cost Kickstarter many orders of magnitude more than her project could bring in, it would marginalize millions of people who do not have another way to contribute to the communities that use Kickstarter, many of whom are already vulnerable people with little socioeconomic power. Clearly, this is not an option.
Kickstarter could ban comments, or allow project managers to delete comments. This would stifle the communities involvement with the project, and potentially allow project managers to sweep legitimate problems under the rug. This would diminish the trust the public might be willing to grant other projects. It would be irresponsible to choose this optio Even requiring a credit card and a $1 contribution to commentn.
That leaves the unfortunate final option to decline to host her project until the matter can be resolved. It most certainly is not her fault, but it isn't Kickstarter's either.
And like many people who falsely accuse others, she's oblivious to the fact that she is the one who has a history of cyber-stalking, though in this case, it's her attacking anyone who disagrees with her. Kickstarter is just the latest victim.
In this case, she may have crossed the line into something more easily actionable than her past libels - using these tactics to try to get Kickstarter to allow a new project is extortion. One woman has already gone to jail for an extortion attempt involving multiple attacks against a firm using hundreds of web sites, forums, and blogs to try to ruin their reputation after they refused to do business with her.
Let's call it what it is, Anti-Social Media.
..have you seen her pictures? I wouldn't fuck her with Steven Root's dick, and Chirs Farley pushing. *blegh*....

I am also a victim of this guy. He harassed me off and on for years. He turned on me after I told him "no" when he asked me to do a favor for him I didn't feel comfortable doing. That was all it took to find myself on his shitlist. While we were "friends" I got to listen to him brag about all the horrible things he'd done to people, mostly women he dated, after they decided to tell him "no" or kick him out of their lives once they realized how crazy he is. He would show me how he was getting so-and-so fired from their job by spoofing emails with child pornography in them to the all@ email aliases of their employers from libraries and hacked DNS servers. He showed me how he made money selling pirated ebooks and sheet music on ebay. And he'd brag about using sockpuppets to build up fake credibility because it's all hearsay on the Internet where the credibility of consensus is only second to hard evidence.
Don't fall for this guy's sockpuppet spam. This is exactly the kind of thing he was doing on Kickstarter, and has done on Reddit, Hackernews, here, Rachel's various blogs, and yes, all the way back to the days of Livejournal being the amazing mecca of social networking.
His name is Jason Christopher Hughes AKA Michael Nath AKA Thylacine AKA antisense is over 40 years old. He's been at this game for a long, long time and has made social engineering an art form.
Most of the posts in here that look like layers of confirmation of "facts" about Rachel are all the same person posting through TOR or I2P. If Slashdot admins were to verify the IPs of most of the other posts attacking Rachel, they'll see a wall of TOR and I2P exit nodes, just as any of us who have checked out the logs of his behavior in the past have been able to see. You let this guy brainwash you into believing all his propaganda against Rachel, and you've just weaponized yourself in his favor. Please do not. Keep an open mind. Use your critical thinking skills. Do not allow the emotional shock value of the propaganda to interfere with your thinking. I know it's hard. It's especially hard because Rachel is a very reactionary individual. She has that rockstar vibe to her, and she doesn't take crap from anyone. That makes her an easy target, clearly, because anytime the "moral high ground" seems a little shaky, it's a vulnerability in her defense against her cyberstalker.
He's been stalking several of us for years. Most of us don't ever talk about him using our typical logins because he'll shit up the administration and our posts until we get banned. He's phenomenally good at turning people against his victims.
Unfortunately it's hard to collect evidence against him. He only attacks maybe 10 or so people at a time. He's never going to become a priority for the FBI or local police because they either have bigger fish to fry or don't understand how to handle him in a way that his behavior can be documented. Making all of this public is a big push for all of us who he's been harassing for over a decade. We're tired of it. We want it to end. We need help.
Not your personal army and all that, sure, but it would be nice if we weren't alone in trying to bring this guy down.
"With so many women being stalking targets this does not seem reasonable to me." Oh that poor, poor woman! We can not stand for this injustice against a woman! I mean, come on, she has a vagina! There must be something we can do!!
Yes, she's sometimes a drama queen, but her cyberstalker is *very* real. He's the same person who has harassed me off and on for around 10 years. I posted this earlier: http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2786853&cid=39688653
You're an idiot and should be kicked in the nuts.

Electric Hellfire Club / Terrorfakt Responds To Nazi Allegations
posted May 18, 2010 at 12:44 PM by xFiruath. (1 Comment)
Wilhelm Curse of The Electric Hellfire Club has checked in with the following statement about allegations that Terrofakt band mate Ben DeWalt is involved with Nazism:
"For any of the fans of the EHC who are into rhythmic noise and hard industrial; some of you may have heard the escalating rumor that Ben DeWalt, my friend, co-conspirator, and the founder of Terrofakt, is a Nazi. This could not be further from the truth. Ben has been our close friend for nearly 15 years, and we know that he is anything but a white supremacist. For the last few years I have had the privilege to play with Ben, as a member of Terrorfakt. During this time, I have come to know Ben much better than I ever did during the years that he represented the EHC. He is my close friend, and comrade in arms. He is a proud patriotic American, who firmly believes in the values that this great nation was founded on... among those being that all of us are created equal.
"My time with Terrorfakt has introduced me to many other associated acts and musicians, and to Terrorfakt's fanatically loyal fan base, all being of various ethnic and even religious backgrounds. Accordingly, I can categorically deny that any of these accusations have any merit to them. This smear campaign against Ben is perpetuated by an Industrial music outcast named Rachel Mandelson. She is more 'popularly' known as the idiot behind 'Experiment Haywire.' She is an individual who has failed to garner any success on her own, and has taken to making slanderous and libelous accusations against a much more popular and successful act, in order to gain attention for herself.
"Her entire issue with Terrorfakt stems from Ben's refusal to peddle her merch at a music festival that she gained illegal entry to, thereby denying the performing bands (and promoter) their just compensation. She blames everyone but herself for her failure as a musician, and claiming that Ben has ruined her 'career' because of her Jewish heritage is her way of trying to garner sympathy through portraying herself as a victim, rather that simply a failure. I have long been a believer in the old show business saying of 'There is no such thing as bad press,' and to automatically confirm any rumor told about me (or the EHC) as being true. However, Ben finds the contention of his being a Nazi to be offensive, and clearing his name is of personal importance to him. To that end, I have felt the need to address the issue publicly, and to support my friend. I ask you, our fans, to help put a stop to this rumor, by correcting anyone that you hear repeating it, and to not support Rachel Mandelson or Experiment Haywire in any way."

Over the past 3 years, we have asked several websites to remove her harmful and derogative comments concerning the Kinetik Festival and the musical acts present during the festival.
Unfortunately, she had made a personal business to attack the festival and some bands performing during Kinetik festival, without investigating the alleged facts. She tried to put down the festival based on her statements. The se
This works great in "real" life, but it's so much harder to track someone down and prove a pattern of behavior because credibly *establishing identity* is *hard* when you're dealing with someone who works through sockpuppets and anonymizing services. If they can't document the problem, they can't really go after him without a willingness to commit resources to the cause, and really he's only doing this to a few people at a time. Small potatoes = low priority.
Federal law makes it illegal to bring a loaded weapon to the airport for any reason, unless you are law enforcement personnel on duty, and ordered to go to the airport. The law has been in place for some time. It doesn't matter if they post that sign or not, they can still arrest you for bringing a loaded or concealed (on your person, not your luggage) firearm to the airport. I think they started posting those signs as a courtesy for state laws. Just to remind people that you should not do so.
Incorrect. There is no federal law that bans bringing firearms to airports, that's badly misinformed FUD you're peddling. Firearms control in the general access of airports is left to the state-specific laws; any firearms past the posted security checkpoints can happen with either a) you being law enforcement with special dispensation or b) you check your firearm in the luggage according to FEDERAL law and some airlines' regulations.
Gee. There are federal laws telling citizens how they can fly on a plane with their firearms but, according to you, they can be arrested simply for showing up to the airport?
As to you living in Florida, that's fine -- each state has their own firearms laws in general, but you're so wrong you're not even wrong when it comes to the federal firearms law.

In physics, there are rare particle interactions which take place when a combination of individually rare things happen. They are called "forbidden" interactions, they aren't truly forbidden, they are just forbidden by the normal physics (e.g. conservation law) which governs most of of the transitions.
It isn't frequent, but because Avogadro's number is so large, these forbidden interactions do occur.
So, is that's what's happening now?

I have given paypal donations to "anonymous proxy" admins (FDC servers) for logs, I have gotten account information from ISP helpdesks and I have helped police file subpoenas to legal departments located in-the-middle-of-nowhere USA. Once, I even traveled to Romania to chat with a hacking crew about the damage that they did and asked them personally to help me repair it (Romanians are really helpful and friendly and it was my pleasure to meet them).
So I read the headline and said to myself "poor girl, ten years! that must mean she has had some very bad help in the past" So I dug a bit to get an idea about what might really be going on. I found the same stuff others here found but for some reason the one that really stood out was this

"Alt.Therapy is a new (dis)organization for artists, mutants, mentally ill radicals, freaks in trouble, and anyone who is looking for help who does not support the brainwashing industry of mainstream therapy.
At Alt.Therapy we define ourselves as post-sane. We do not want to conform to a central definition of reality. Yet sometimes people like us can get into difficult situations. We need people to talk to who think like we do who have been through similar experiences.
I'm not a licensed therapist and don't offer a traditional cure to your problems but I offer an alternative form of therapy that will help you improve your life. Sessions range from 15 minutes to an hour and are based on your individual needs as a client.
We don't force you to talk about your family history and refuse to ask "how does that make you feel?" Instead we ask the question "what does that make you want to do?" Then we help you do it. You provide us with a description of your main problem and we provide you with a counseling session that will help you change it.
We also offer packages that include a list of bands with similar ideas, a customized playlist related to your life, an introduction to like-minded communities, a list of films that apply to your current situation, and a list of books to read that you will find mentally stimulating.
Package 1: - 15 minute session - $20
Package 2: - 30 minute session - $35
Package 3: - 60 minute session - $60
Add on: Lists of bands, films, like-minded communities, books written by people who think like you do, and a customized playlist related to your life - $20"
So a non-therapist charges $60 to $80 an hour for, what seems to be, non-therapy.
Seems like she is a petty con artist on many small levels and I am guessing this Slashdot article was part of it.
Texas
In 2005 Texas passed House Bill 94[31] which created an exception to a 1973 statute,[32] which required a person to retreat in the face of a criminal attack.
In 2007 Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 378 which extends a person’s right to stand their ground beyond the home to vehicles and workplaces, allowing the reasonable use of deadly force when an intruder is:
Committing certain violent crimes, such as murder or sexual assault, or is attempting to commit such crimes;
Unlawfully trying to enter a protected place; or
Unlawfully trying to remove a person from a protected place.[33]
Senate Bill 378, made effective September 1, 2007, also "abolishes the duty to retreat if the defendant can show he: (1) had a right to be present at the location where deadly force was used; (2) did not provoke the person against whom deadly force was used; and (3) was not engaged in criminal activity at the time deadly force was used."[34]

And this is a posting from Jason Christopher Hughes, who's decided to make an appearance in the comments section of this article on The Daily Dot: http://www.dailydot.com/business/kickstarter-cyberstalker-victim-rachel-marone/
Another comment from stalker Jason Christopher Hughes. You can see more of the same in the comments section of this article on The Daily Dot: http://www.dailydot.com/business/kickstarter-cyberstalker-victim-rachel-marone/ This quote is manufactured, and appears nowhere on the web except for places it's been posted as a quote by some sock puppet ID or an "anonymous coward", like Mr. Hughes is right here. Check http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=victor+cypert+%22resident+computer+programmer%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 and see for yourself.
Gee, I'm surprised you haven't initiated a civil lawsuit against me for intentional infliction of emotional distress. I'm not exactly difficult to find... And surely you wouldn't claim I'd done something like this without having a shred of actual evidence to support it...? Right?
And the above comment was written by Jason Christopher Hughes, in yet another attempt to interfere with the employment of yet another one of his stalking victims.

I said loaded weapon. I emphasized it for you again. You cannot, by federal law, bring a loaded weapon to the airport. Just walking in to the terminal building of any airport with a loaded gun is a violation. It doesn't matter where you have it, whether it is your luggage, or on your person. Yes you can travel via airplane with a firearm but it cannot be loaded. Please see 49 CFR 1540.111. I'll even provide you a link, so you don't even have to use Google: http://law.justia.com/cfr/title49/49-9.1.3.5.8.2.10.6.html
Let's suppose that you had maintained a presence on a domain for a number of years, call it "stonemirror.net".
Let's further suppose that a "troll" (more accurately, an online stalker and harasser) purchases the domain "stonemirror.org" and puts up a pro-NAMBLA web site with your name on it.
That happened to me, and the person who's harassing Rachel Marone — Jason Christopher Hughes aka Michael Rudra Nath — is the person who did it to me.
Suppose that someone set up a Facebook profile impersonating you, and attempted to get your friends and family to add it. Suppose further that he preemptively blocked your real profile, so you could neither see nor report it yourself.
That also happened to me, and Jason Christopher Hughes aka Michael Rudra Nath is also the person who did that.
What's the collective wisdom of Slashdot on dealing with such things?
Thank you for the link.
Nowhere does it prohibit the carry of firearms except for the sterile (their word) areas of the airport. You are conflating the public areas of the airport with the sterile areas of the airport and, as I stated, they are considered two separate areas when it comes to firearms. Read your link again and pay attention to the term "sterile". Here's the first sentence without all the formatting; it might make it easier to understand:
"Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, an individual may not have a weapon... on or about the individual's person or accessible property...[w]hen performance has begun of the inspection of the individual's person or accessible property before entering a sterile area, or before boarding an aircraft for which screening is conducted under Â1544.201 or Â1546.201 of this chapter..."
The key phrase is highlighted. Again, any public area of an airport is governed by that state's carry laws.
