Free? .... "misery And Force choke? Really, Free?! I think you'll have to pay EA for these as DLC on first day. And chances are, the game won't run without misery.
Sooner or later, you'll have to pay to have a player that walks and runs - $1.99 each.
I haven't played the online Starwars mmporg, but the original Bioware Knights of Old Republic I & II (save for a few annoying characters ... which seems the norm for the SW universe .... ) were among the best games I've ever played. Now EA owns Bioware, which means Bioware cannot be any better than any EA game. Sigh.

Disney came fairly late to the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" franchise, and even then all they are is a distributor...Paramount and Marvel are the creative and monetary forces behind the franchise.
My guess is that since Disney was the only studio that wasn't cashing in on superhero movies, they found a way to make some money off the genre.

For me, if it's on any bullshit DRM system posing as a service, it doesn't exist. Steam, Origin, doesn't matter.
Not many computer games released for PC, these days. The ones that are tend to be lots more fun than some Orange Box shite though.

I don't have problems with DRM per se. I do have problems with DRM when it becomes disruptive. Steam isn't disruptive. Sometimes there are glitches in their system, but occurrences are few and far between nowadays, I can't really remember the last time I have had a problem. It allows people to install their games on an unlimited number of computers regardless of os. Game updates are reliable and unobtrusive. They give the little guy massive help by making sure indie games get as good exposure as the triple a titles. Not to mention the fact that they always have something on sale.

Marvel isn't nearly as integrated into the Disney culture (and doesn't integrate nearly as well) as Pixar or Lucasfilm, whose content matter can be described as wholesome, and if not then sanitized. On the other hand, Marvel's stories deal with darker, more complex, and more adult issues. These are issues that Disney is not accustomed to working with.
Marvel is the lone adult in a room full of infantile children. In fact, this may actually be a fair description of the relationship between Marvel's culture and Disney's culture. For now, Marvel is safe, because Disney doesn't really know what to do with Marvel. Yet. But as George Carlin says, "Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience." As in the same way that a child wouldn't know what to do with an adult initially, it'll only be a matter of time before Disney does exactly that with Marvel.

To be fair, EA has produced okay games. Yeah, their library is huge and full of crap, but they can produce a good game when they want to. The main complaint everyone has is DRM, right? Disney really means one thing: Merchandising We shouldn't be surprised when this happens, but typically, they need to do something to create fans to sell the stuff. So, yeah, I expect yoda dolls that come in sizes 1", 3", 6", 18", and 36" for those who really need a yoda that's bigger than yoda, but there's a good chance a good movie comes along with. With J.J. Abrams in the director's chair there's a very solid chance of that happening. The games could really go either way, but you'll need an internet connection to play them, lol.

Check out Good Old Games (gog.com). They're all DRM free and that's where almost all of my game purchases are anymore, because I despise companies punishing people for buying their product.

But Steam (which yes, I own some games on) still has the fatal flaw of all DRM which means that they can take away your ability to play the games you paid for at any time they way. Since DRM means that you're only renting a game, the only games I buy with DRM are ones that are on sale for ridiculously low prices (such as $5 or less). I refuse to pay full price for something I don't own.

On a 4,3GHz quad core, with 32GB mem, how is it a problem that Steam runs in the background? It's not as if the games are 64bit and use most of the mem anyway.
I can appreciate that bloat sucks, but that is hardly a problem for modern machines (say made in the last 4 years).

It isn't hard to find and start the games from harddrive without launching steam. You'll miss out on cloud synced saves and some other features, but the games do run. Not really the definition of DRM.

Steam is as good as it is ever going to get. Pick your battles. If you go with Steam then you will have a system that lets you play offline across several different computers and download files from the cloud. If you attack Steam, maybe EA's super paranoia system will win, where you can be banned from your always online EA games permanently for just making a critical comment in a message board (especially comments about how fucked up the game is due to DRM or asking for a refund).

My over 4, soon 5 years old rig was a Q9550 with 8GB mem. It didn't pose a problem there neither.
And before that I had a E6400 (upgraded to Q6600) with 4GB of mem, still no probs.
Before that, OK, Steam used a notable portion of your system resources.
But if you're gaming on a 8+ years old rig, maybe PC gaming ain't your thang?

That is simply not true. There is offline mode. It works. And it can be enabled _after_ you lose connection, albeit it's a bit of a hassle then.
As with most DRM services, you do have to log in every once in a while to update the info.

For me, if it's not Cross Platform (Win,Mac,Nix) then it's useless. Seriously, there isn't any reason NOT to have Cross Platform, more money is better than limited money from a single Platform that may or may not continue to exist in a few years, since XNA and DirectX is pretty much dead now, not to mention limited to a single Platform whereas OpenGL is available to all. Bottom line, there is more money to be made by being Cross Platform; It's also my understanding that a certain company actually pays Devs to make their Games exclusive.
Thing is, the money given to them for being exclusive could probably be made up by being Cross Platform. So it still doesn't make any sense to be so single-platform minded. I mean, I've been thinking about making a small Game Company, but we're not going to develop for just one Platform when more Money can be made from multiple platforms. Not to mention more exposure and fans, a non-evil Company is what we're aiming for =)
By the way, you don't think this EA agreement had something to do with the Jedi Knight source code being removed from SourceForge do ya. Not that it matters, everybody has it now and I've been playing Jedi Academy with the Linux port.

I seldom get those problems, and if I do, it's even rarer that Steam is the one causing them.
It's not like it's a prerequisite that games need the Source engine to work on steam now is it?
Multiplayer through steam is by far the best solution out there. If you know of any conistently better solution, I'd like to hear about it.
And if you want to enjoy "steam free" singleplayer, go offline.

I'll third this suggestion. GOG, Humble Bundle and indies who provide games without DRM are the only places I will pay money.
I love GOG. I can buy a lot of the old games that I was always interested in, but never bought for whatever reason. I have also repurchased a number of games that I already own, simply because GOG patched/hacked them up to work flawlessly on modern operating systems. Additionally, one small but cool thing that GOG does is provide you with high resolution wallpapers, concept art, avatars, soundtracks and manuals for the games that you buy.

I will admit I am not a big fan of Marvel Comics, there is a bit of work Marvel published that I did enjoy, and also I grew up reading many Marvel comics. I don't have an internet connection quite often, due to the fact that I travel more than six months out of the year. When I don't have a connection, that is when I most want to be able to play games.
That is an always online, *artificial restriction*, just with an interval of one month. If I have to "check in" with big brother corporates from time to time for legally purchased games, then the deal is off. The Steam DRM also doesn't work when you travel from country to country, so Valve has this unnecessary distribution software that could be completely done on a standard web site and it's a global store, but not really, they artificially restrict it, just like they do for the monthly checkups.

I've also travelled quite a bit, and haven't experienced that country problem you describe.
Luckily, that is mostly not a problem for me, as I game from home usually. If it is for you, then I'm sorry about that.
But I do not agree to your terms when it comes to defining "always online". As that has come to mean "a constant connection to the internet during the entire game session". Call it what it is, periodically online DRM check.
Steam does fill my needs as is. Even though I'm not happy about DRM, I am a realist, and realize that a lot of the games I do have in steam today wouldn't have been sold digitally without DRM. Besides, it's not Valve/Steam that imposes DRM on the users, that is the distributors/developers choice. There are a lot of games sold on steam that doesn't use DRM (Try unhooking your net connection, and start the executables directly and have a look see).
Another pretty much untouched subject on this topic is that Steam is today a lot more than just a digital shop for games, it is also pretty much a social channel for friends. Atleast that is how me and my friends us it. That is also one of the reasons I'm butt hurt about all those other clients like origin etc. popping up, which is also breaking up said community functions.
While that is said; I'd also like to state that _I_ like Steam, and prefer it. I am not for "Steam exclusivity" or anything similar. Steam is my platform of choice. I am pro other shops like eg. gog.com selling the same games. But I do want everything through the one channel I've chosen, rather having to shop around for it.

I was careless enough to eat these things. Not so careless that I went for the big macs or quarter pounders. I could buy three 39 cent regular burgers, and come out better fed than the single big mac, at that price.

Bioware still makes great games, despite EA owning them.
They've spent pretty much the last DECADE making two games -- Mass Effect and Dragon Age -- both of which were, in a word, awesome. [Some argument can be made about the ending of ME3 being weak, but it doesn't ruin a great franchise.]
Before that they did such duds as Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR.
EA or not, I'll eat whatever Bioware is serving with a smile.

i made an exception to that rule for project entropia which i never took seriously but checked it out on the recent ad campaign, because it promises real money and some people seem to have done quite well with it. Other than that, steam theory prevails :) maybe mindark should consider making their stuff available via the one platform to rule them all, they seem to be looking for new clientele and what better way to reach a huge target audience, that will be interested in gaming for sure since the ad-campaign seems to be a bit more diffused than just the target audience (that's not really correct english is it ... i hope the message gets through though)

I feel obliged to point out that the shield in question was intended to protect it while it was under construction, not while it was in use. Also, to reach that shield they needed authorization which may have included letting them through the local planetary shields.

I have to say, the headline honestly surprised me. A franchise with as much potential as Star Wars, and yet it's like they went with the lowest bidder.
Or do they not have google at Disney? Virtually the entire first page of results for "EA Reputation" slams them, or is full of people very blatantly trying to work around the accepted fact that EA has a god-awful reputation.
I can find no words. Really, honestly, it is shocking. It's like the first thought was, "Let's get some businesses in here", and then they went into group-think. The immediate reaction I would have had--no, scratch that, I probably wouldn't if I were as rich as Disney, and had scammy showmen knocking at my door, but the first reaction I damn well SHOULD have had is, "Will they make good product?" And the judge of that isn't what executives think, it's what the target audience thinks.
Those reports about EA being named the worst company in America two years running are, without a doubt, overblown. However, they are the target audience providing feedback over the quality of the product.
Disney handed it over.

No, but we're discussing the second Death Star and the shield generator around it, not the Battle of Hoth.
The shield generator on Hoth, incidentally, protected the planet from orbital planetary bombardment. It did what it was supposed to do, but could not stop ground troops from coming down to the surface and destroy it.

I don't know, Bioware made KOTOR and that was one of the better Star Wars games ever made. Despite what people think some of the EA studios still have a bit of creativity left. (Then again after trying to play Dragon Age it may be fading fast...)

If that's the direction they want to go, ugh. But they also made the Mass Effect series and I was pretty happy with that overall (given it's basically the same engine as KOTOR, you can see where my game tastes lie... still waiting for a Jade Empire sequel...)

Many of those KOTOR guys ended up at Obsidian entertainment. They have had their fair amount of issues turning good games out since the split. The rest did end up doing Mass Effect.

Seems to me the model to emulate would be Warner Brothers where they've increasingly been doing development in studios they own rather than licensing. It seems like a better model for maintaining and growing a franchise rather than cashing in on it and using up its credibility.

Battlefield 2142 was the last game i purchased from them, because i liked BF1942, and BF2 a lot. I bought those titles BECAUSE of the modding community.
By the time BF3 came along, i started boycotting EA for their abusive DRM. Incidentally, about that time dice removed the cd check from the older BF titles.
I'd rather play the older titles than touch BF3. Same with Simcity, v4 is good and with mods its even better.
Valve encourage mods while EA forbids them. Guess where my purchases go? EA is finished for me.
Both BF1942 and BF2 had excellent Star Wars mods, which i spent countless hours playing with. Prettier graphics mean nothing if bad gameplay and DRM comes to ruin it all.
I get bored quickly with stock maps, no matter the game. It is the modding community what makes a purchase truly worth it, and the more mods the better. When they said people were not allowed to mod BF3, i didn't want nothing with it, to this day.
I think the original Dice people should go independent with crowd-funding. In fact, anyone who is worth their talent should have left EA long ago.
And no, a franchise/trademark, no matter its value, doesn't make a good game. You can fool some people at first, like they did with Simcity 5, only to find out how bad it turned out; then simple word of mouth will destroy the millions spent in marketing.
EA is probably beyond repair at this point, they can't allow original ideas or talented people "because its risky". All they do is repeat and repeat, while adding idiotic DRM annoyances in the way. Not like Disney is any better...

I know better than say that EA is beyond salvation. But that they did some pretty shitty stuff in the past that they did. They destroyed studios` identities changing their names. They use Bioware`s name in anything new they do because they know Bioware has a good reputation.
I have no idea if they will change but one can hope. EA may star at Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. For now I`m betting the empire will kick gamers` all around the globe pretty soon.

Do a good job, make a great tie fight /x wing game. Don't DRM it to death, stay true to the source, adult but not gratuitous. hire some good screen writers.

Don't attempt to micro transition it to death. Think more season pass more campaigns new ships for 20 bucks a year if you must have that to sell to the overlords. Sell on the fact that this is a great PR move, that for 1 great nostalgic game fans will forgive forget a bunch or well idiot ones.

Get old pc gamers to say " It was like playing the old game, updated but with that same feel" and you will have 75% of the people that want to split you an roast you like a pig, trampling over themselves thanking you.

As a casual Star Wars fan, I've tried to stay upbeat about the sale of Star Wars to Disney. After all, as my friends and I keep telling each other, "It can't actually be worse than the prequels, right?" But I've watched announcement after announcement with trepidation. J.J. Abrams directing? Clone Wars unceremoniously canceled and the people making it let go? Now the universally-loathed EA is to be in charge of the gaming wing of the franchise? (I'm expecting Disney to cancel Dark Horse's comics license as soon as they legally can, if not sooner.) Star Wars has had a great many ups and downs over the years, but there have been some amazing stories along the way. I fear that the Mouse is going to steamroller that whole universe into bland commercialism for the rest of my life.

Is this really a surprise to anyone at this point? Disney bought SW and then announced that, with the help of Metamucil, Golytely, and plenty of fiber, were going to shit out at one movie a year. One can argue that it died with the making of episodes 1-3 and George Lucas' monetization push of the past ten or so years, but I think this is the last nail in the coffin. All that's left is the dissolution of ILM, and that will sound like dirt hitting wood.

How to ruin a good thing: sell it to Disney. I don't expect quality offerings from Pixar anymore either, especially after the atrocity that was Brave.

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was awesome for its multiplayer campaigns and stuff. Way ahead of its time. Way.
There was no story though, no ship to wander around in, no medals to look at, none of the cool briefings hosted by Admiral Ackbar (ITS A TRAP).

I used Cygwin the whole time I was at M$... And I used Interix/SFU/SUA or whatever they called it, after there was a whole Deb distro ported.

Looks like the Deb stopped updating in 2009. I would have been using it until 2010. It worked, with a XMingX server - which I preferred over CygwinX.

If the developers of Battlefield, Dead Space, and Mass Effect are creating the new Star wars games, then theres no way it could end up all that bad. These guys created some of the most successful games to date. just because they are working under EA and Disney doesn't mean these new games will be any different.

I do hope that EA replaces the "There Is A Problem With Your Connection" error with that one for this game. It has always amused me how EA and DICE deftly focused their own failings back upon the user with that message. Buyers of this game will be sure to see it, too, as EA will certainly play it's usual "shave off 40% of the suckers by taking their money and then locking them out of the game until they give up trying to play it" ruse.

If they were an automaker, EA would be whomever designed the Trabant.

I agree. You can say what you want about Origin, DRM, constant DLC, running franchises into the ground with uninspired sequels, and any of a thousand other reasons to hate EA, but at the end of the day Bioware, DICE, and Visceral Games are all very competent developers that know how to make very solid and fairly polished games. I dislike EA as much as the next gamer (OK, maybe not as EA has so many rabid anti-fanboys) and while I would love to see any other publisher get the Star Wars license, these guys are hardly anywhere close to the worst choice. At least with Bioware, DICE, and Visceral we know it isn't going to be some child-friendly schlock and while it probably won't be the best games ever made, it should still be some solid and fun entertainment.

It could be worse, it could have been Ubisoft!
