More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
Roper: I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coastâ" man's laws, not God'sâ" and if you cut them downâ"and you're just the man to do itâ"do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.
... on the child porn. But it creates 'probable cause' to hold someone and go through the rest of their personal belongings, car, house, etc.
And we have a winner! This is nothing more than a slightly more elaborate version of the plastic "magic wands" Iraqi security forces were (and probably still are) using to detect everything from explosives to drugs. The could be counting birds flying by or examining entrails: the point is to let them legally search (harass) citizens.
If you make "irrecoverably crashing your HDD every eighteen months" an unofficial policy, then when you get investigated, you're clear. And if you're not investigated its (at worst) a minor inconvenience.
If I was a bad person, $10,000 would be enough to get me thinking, "Okay, now, how can I convincingly frame someone I don't like for this?"

I've been using the Firefox-based Pale Moon browser for a while now, specifically so I don't have to deal with crap like this. It would be really nice if developers could figure out the concept of a mature piece of software, and focus on polishing performance instead of change for the sake of change. (And at the least, make UI changes optional.)
It's like a car company offering to let your bring your car into the shop, and they swap your headlight, signal, and wiper control around for free!
"Right to a profitable business model" slowly becoming enshrined in US law one step at a time. Give the corporations another couple decades and USA Inc. will be making Russia and China look good by comparison.
Sure, the 'best' schools are there, but who cares if you're walking the edge of malnutrition in order to pay for class, gas, and books? Emigrate to an actual civilized country instead of a pretend one.
Dell is blaming a (quality) product they don't like for their own failings. Dice (and its supporters) are blaming unhappy Slashdot users for the problems Dice.com has created with the tone-deaf Beta.
Because Beta has exposed a fatal flaw in web- based communities, ie that the current owner of a domain around which a community has formed can choose to do whatever they like, the new official Slashdot is on Usenet, at comp.misc and I hope to see you all there.
Eternal September is a free Usenet provider, with the caveat that they do not carry binary (warez+porn) groups. Head on over and get your account today, and then we'll see each other on comp.misc!

On February 5, 2014, Slashdot announced through a javascript popup that they are starting to "move in to" the new Slashdot Beta design.
Slashdot Beta is a trend-following attempt to give Slashdot a fresh look, an approach that has led to less space for text and an abandonment of the traditional Slashdot look. Much worse than that, Slashdot Beta fundamentally breaks the classic Slashdot discussion and moderation system. If you haven't seen Slashdot Beta already, open this ] in a new tab. After seeing that, click here to return to classic Slashdot.
We should boycott stories and only discuss the abomination that is Slashdot Beta until Dice abandons the project.
We should boycott slashdot entirely during the week of Feb 10 to Feb 17 as part of the wider slashcott Moderators - only spend mod points on comments that discuss Beta Commentors - only discuss Beta http://slashdot.org/recent - Vote up the Fuck Beta stories

Except their comments to date indicate that giving the users any sort of choice between the two is the last thing they're going to do. If Dice.com would make a credible (or, indeed any) statement that they do intend to give readers and posters a choice between formats I suspect much of the hullabaloo would rapidly evaporate.
I also can't help but wonder if there's some common experience of running into the evils of corporate-speak among those of us strongly reacting to the Beta.
Although, even if they came out an publicly stated that classic Slashdot will remain, would we even believe them at this point? The whole thing has just reeked of mealymouthed corporate ham-handedness.:-(
This is the sound of the panoptic, dystopian police state coming. Good luck everyone!

To win the award for "biggest sellout in presidential history".
Institutions pushing ultimately destructive long-term behavior in favor of short-term returns.

This sort of thing is going to continue until the only way the public can fight back in violence, which will be terrible for everyone. :-(

Our society's problems aren't going to be corrected by listening to disconnected billionaires.
The article is just mindless tripe for the Monsanto shills.
On Dice-owned Slashdot? I'm shocked, shocked!
Thanks, and thanks again for the pointer to comp.misc. I hope everyone who stays enjoys classic slashdot while they can.
