Microsoft Begins Rolling Out Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (windows.com)
Microsoft has started to roll out Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, aka, "Redstone 3" to the general public. The company has been testing this new major update to its desktop operating system for over six months. Much like the previous major updates to Windows 10, the Fall Creators Update is also free to Windows 10 users. Some of the remarkable new features the company is shipping with Fall Creators Update include a major design tweak called Fluent Design System. The design changes, CNET writes, are "subtle, like motion and blur effects, along with the changes to the way windows appear." Also in the offering are support for mixed reality, improvements to Photos app, and OneDrive on-demand files -- a feature that many users have long requested. This post is a protest against the censorship of posts that are skeptical of global warming. Although the posts on this site often are more skeptical than accepting of global warming, moderators routinely censor the skeptical posts to -1. Moderators are engaging in a systematic attempt to suppress any skepticism of global warming, and it needs to be stopped. Although this post is off-topic, it is civil disobedience to protest the abuse of moderation to systematically censor specific viewpoints. I will continue to post this in order to draw attention to the censorship that is occurring on Slashdot until it stops. It seems clear that this censorship is the work of Al Gore's paid moderator trolls, who are tasked with suppressing any posts that call global warming into question. Not even pro-Microsoft posts are censored to the degree that global warming skeptics are, which is indicative of the censorship by the moderators. Slashdot is supposed to be a place free of censorship and it is time that the censorship of global warming skeptics stops.

Given that how much of a train wreck the entire Windows 10 platform is I fully expect to see major failures across the board as this new update rolls out. Just like it has done with every single major 'upgrade' this abject POS operating system has been given.
To me it sounds like someone who prefers, say, the biennial (2-year) cycle of Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) releases over the semiannual (6-month) cycle of Ubuntu intermediate releases and Windows 10 feature updates.
I want to be able to find the damn scroll bars. Either improve the colors, let me choose a classic theme, or otherwise give me some ability of get rid of the flat interface disaster. That is my requested feature.

Anyone know how to disable the stupid "here's all your windows, click on one" effect and return ALT-TAB to the way it has worked for decades?

"motion and blur effects" Please no. We have shared ISDN in our office since Comcast is almost two years late on their promised install, so this is going to make life suck even more. Hopefully it won't be hard to script to disable. We've already invested about two man-weeks in tweaks to Windows to try to make remote desktop less slow.

(laptop came with windows 10 home, which .. fuck you MS. Not entirely sure the drivers are actually available for 7, or 8.1 in a pinch. Namely thunderbolt and touchscreen -- and entertaining the notion of spending ~$200 for the pro version to opt out of their nonsense.. again, kindly fuck yourselves MS.)
Product decisions like this are the reason MS will eventually lose the desktop OS market.

Unless you're using mainstream Ubuntu, which changes desktop environment once or twice a decade. It changed from GNOME 2 to Unity in 11.10, leading to widespread sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. And it's set to change from Unity to GNOME 3 in 17.10.

Thanks for the warning. It allows me to set aside time in advance of the inevitable machine reimaging I have to do because Microsoft destroys our few Windows 10 machines again.
Go to Settings -> Update & security -> Advanced options and turn on Pause Updates.
This will give Microsoft some time to fix those "oopsies" they missed in the first few month after release before they force me to update. Its only giving me a little over a month buffer this time, as opposed to a few months with the Creators Update, but it may save me some grief on my work PC.
Cause after you update your speakers will give Minecraft players that familiar sound of "Sssssssssssssssss..." before a creeper face appears on the screen and the PC goes boom.

Instead of being able to go directly to what you want you'll have to spend time searching. It's as if the developers have never been to a brick and mortar store in their life. When buying eggs, does one walk around the entire store looking for them, or do you go straight to the refrigerated section?

Eighteen mentions of Microsoft on the front page and thirteen mentions of Windows.
Go to settings-> updates -> and select update schedule -> defere updates. Select 30 to 90 days. Done!
For the system administrators now create a GPO to do the same and put it on Active Directory so no one else in your organization gets the updates until others find the bugs for you. Call it a day and go home.

Is this the update that uninstalls Windows Media Player, but at least it is available to reinstall if needed?
Still forced telemetry that logs an incredibly disturbing amount of data? No? Can't ever trust it enough to put it on any sort of hardware. When Microsoft decides to no longer be user-hostile then it'll be worth checking.
Oh, if the privacy settings "can" be turned off - lets have a third party company verify that this is true. Microsoft has proven itself to be untrustworthy.

I love how Microsoft forces the new update after "testing it for over 6 months", and causes my software to crash. At least now I know why I have problems with Mirillis Action! , I hope they will release the patch soon.
Just finished upgrading to Fall Creators Update.
I use Slackware Linux (-current 64-bit) and Windows 10 in a dual boot setting managed by GRUB. Both OSes are in partitions of a single drive (/dev/sda).
I thought of this setup as highly stable. It started as a dual boot between Slackware and Windows 8.1. It survived upgrades to Windows 10, Anniversary Update and Creators Update without any hassle, so I thought this time would be equally painless. I was wrong.
This Windows upgrade totally b0rked my previous partitioning scheme. Upon the first reboot I got the dreaded message "GRUB error: Unkown filesystem" and a generic GRUB prompt.
I managed to boot manually from GRUB, but Linux still could not recognize its root partition. It turned out that this Windows upgrade somehow changed the partitioning scheme. So, if my root partition previously was, say /dev/sda6, now it was /dev/sda4. But GRUB and the whole system kept looking for root still in /dev/sda6, which now was something else. After realizing what was going on, I was able to restore things to an usable state.

Besides the issue with partitions, there is also another problem with Fall Creators Update. The only USB ports provided by my laptop are USB 3.0 ports. All of them. I own a small HP LaserJet 1020 printer connected via USB (it uses USB1). After the upgrade I cannot print anymore. Windows says that the printer is an old USB1 device which cannot take advantage of the features of the newest USB3.0 port. Funny thing is that up to Creators Update I could print to that very own printer, with the same port and cable, without any complaining from the system.
So, be careful when upgrading.

I don't think a single one of the "improvements" listed is of any interest. But one non-listed improvement is highly important: a fix to the bug (or several bugs) in the .NET garbage collector introduced with the spring 2017 release. That bug caused major issues for one program I use (SIL's Fieldworks Language Explorer), and I presume it must affect other programs built with .Net. Despite its being documented back in May, and (I'm told) fixed in Insider Releases in June, Ms has only now gotten around to releasing it to The Rest Of Us.
Everything else, with the possible exception of the "Anti-ransomware protection", is lipstick, IMHO.
