Is iOS 11.4 Draining Your iPhone's Battery? You're Not Alone (zdnet.com)

If you've noticed that the battery life on your iPhone is not what it used to be, it's likely that the problem isn't with your iPhone or some setting or app, but a bug in iOS 11.4. From a report: Apple's support forum has been blowing up with complaints from users that battery life has been seriously curtailed since installing iOS 11.4. The problems seems to be reasonably widespread and affects the iPhone line up across the board. I've seen this issue on the iPhones that I use. It seems to be accompanied by the device running unusually hot.

While the reaction is understandable, responding to a lack of civility with more of the same is not helpful. It's obvious that quite a lot of people respond to Kowalski anonymously for a variety of reasons.

      My understanding is that creimer left Slashdot several months ago due to persistent harassment. This included photoshopping him into pornographic images, then distributing those publicly. That's a level of harassment that's never warranted. Make no mistake, creimer is unique and eccentric, but nobody deserves that harassment. Now that he's left Slashdot and the target is gone, the individuals responsible for the harassment are posting as AC and pretending to be him. Those posts are then answered by the same individuals, making personal attacks against creimer, even though he never actually posted. They have impersonated people like Richard Bigelow and Silvia Bunge, the latter of whom is a faculty member in UC-Berkeley's psychology department. If creimer were a patient receiving treatment from her, it would be seriously unethical to discuss his mental health on a public forum like Slashdot. In journal case studies that discuss individual patients, careful steps are taken to protect the identity of the subject. If UCB's administration became aware of those posts, it could be damaging to her career. As far as I can tell, she is a victim who has no knowledge that these trolls are using her name as part of a campaign of harassment. Not only are they harassing creimer, but they're potentially damaging the career of someone who seems to be an innocent bystander. There is no justification for their behavior.

      As for Kowalski, I believe there's a decent human being underneath whatever rage, frustration, or other issues are on the surface. He's been engaging in this behavior so long that it's probably comfortable for him and hard for him to imagine anything else. However, I've looked up his history of posting on forums and some of the content from the late 1990s is downright civil and reasonable. Something happened along the way to turn him into the Kowalski we see today and that's a damned shame.

      I believe Kowalski genuinely wants to make a useful contribution by writing software and content about security. That alone is far more those harassing creimer contribute. We can pity Mr. Kowalski but we should treat him with respect.

      I believe some of the posts about Kowalski that impersonate him are caricatures, deliberately exaggerating his behavior to try to get through to him. I believe they're well-intentioned, though the wrong way to do things. I believe your posts about his mental health are well-intentioned and I have no issue with you. You have a distinctive style to your posts, so I can tell when you're replying to Kowalski anonymously as opposed to someone else doing so. I have no issue with you.

      My concern is that I started to see posts about Kowalski getting mixed in with creimer harassment threads. I wonder if the same individuals who have been relentlessly harassing creimer for what seems like at least a year are now also targeting Kowalski. There is nothing well-intentioned or justifiable about those who are harassing creimer. However, a campaign of harassment from these individuals will only worsen Kowalski's issues and drive him farther from the help he needs.

However, I don't ever remember a sustained campaign of personal attacks against a particular user like what's being done with creimer. I also don't remember there being persistent spam about American politics like there seems to be in so many articles now. The interaction with Kowalski is partly a reflection of the general tone of Slashdot comments right now.

      You seem to post with civility, and that's much-needed. If all the voices of civility leave, then all that's left is a bunch of people figuratively bashing each other over the head with harsh words. I encourage you to continue participating, even if it seems like you'd be better off avoiding these conversations. As the great American Martin Luther King, Jr. said, darkness cannot conquer darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot conquer hate; only love can do that. If the voices of civility leave, one should not expect civility to arise from chaos.

      I can't get inside Kowalski's mind; only he truly knows why he reacts as he does. However, perhaps he sees the public criticism of his behavior as showing him up on front of others. Perhaps he just isn't comfortable with his mental health being discussed in a public forum. Despite your good intentions, I can understand why he would be uncomfortable with his mental health being a topic of public discussion. Perhaps he would react differently if you emailed him directly. If you're concerned about how he'll react, create a throwaway email address with a pseudonym and let him know it's because you don't know how he'll receive your comments. If you can build a rapport with him, perhaps the pseudonym would no longer be necessary. I can't speak for him, but perhaps he would react differently if those issues are addressed privately.

      As for the lack of civility on Slashdot, I'd like to see the management cracking down on the most persistent offenses. I'm particularly sensitive to a UCB researcher being impersonated because I do scientific research at another US university and I know how the administration might respond if someone used my name and associated it with unethical behavior online.       With respect to APKs mental health;
      I'm sure my comments aren't going to persuade him. I'd hope that they may add weight to other comments he's had in the past, or be added to in the future but my reason for saying what I have is only partly in the hope of causing change. I think that it's important to call out poor behaviour so that others can see what is and is not acceptable. This is the forum where Alex has chosen to post, so its in this forum that I'll address him. Ultimately, if his behaviour is rooted in a significant pathology, given that it has only become worse over time I doubt that any intervention is going to result in improvement at this point - in a public forum or private. I think there's a greater chance of causing a change in behaviour by criticising and condemning poor behaviour and interacting positively when the behaviour merits.

      Another reason to identify what I see as traits that may arise from NPD is to demystify mental health issues. I've known people like Alex and had I been more aware of NPD and its effects, I may have identified their behaviour sooner and made different choices. It's a problem. It leads to poor outcomes for those that suffer from it. It's not an excuse and it should be treated professionally.

      I've struggled with chronic depression and anxiety for years, but have talked about it fairly openly. I've had others comment that simply having someone else acknowledge and talk about it has helped them feel more comfortable about discussing their own problems, or seeing patterns of behaviour in people they know and being able to talk to them about it. I know I value being able to speak freely, to ask questions or exchange tips, tricks, ideas. Even just being able to say 'I'm out of spoons' and have someone understand is important.

      Regarding the decline in civility;
      We more readily remember the highlights of the past (unless you suffer from chronic depression) and standards change. The GNAA trolls were pretty vile, even if they seem a little more tame, these days. I think there is a greater degree of 'identity politics' and that's leading to an increase in 'us vs them' thinking and behaviour. As we spend more time online, it's increasingly easy to find people who think just as we do and who don't require us to make much, if any, accommodation for differences of thought or expression. It's comfortable, but we lose our facility for being able to accept and interact with others. More, we aren't shown that even if we hold different opinions, we are still accepted.

      I value Slashdot for its lack of editorial censorship. Our dedication to free speech is only tested when someone says something that we dislike or strongly disagree with. I'd rather see vitriolic hate spewed forth and left for comment and criticism so that _others_ can see that the community disagrees, than to see an editor remove it. I've had opinions changed by being confronted by points of view I strongly disagreed with. I cannot express how much I value that. If that means I have to wade through the ridiculous left vs right name calling, it seems a small price to pay. So naturally that has created enough doubt to muddy the diagnosis. And Apple has not acknowledge the bug so there are a lot of responses regarding how to turn things off to improve battery. But, again, that is NOT the problem. The problem is something is running uncontrolled.

    There are many theories as to the cause. Many have to do with something related to WiFi. The only pattern that I have seen is that if I shutdown and restart, the problem goes away for a while. But as soon as I use the phone for whatever reason, it comes back. It might take 6 hours. It might take a day. But eventually it always comes back and then it's stuck draining battery unless I reboot.

    Note that iOS 11.4.1 was just released yesterday. But the release notes say nothing about battery anything so it remains to be seen if they have fixed it. It is discouraging that they have not acknowledged it. It makes you wonder if they're actually having trouble reproducing it. But that would almost unbelievable since they could just install 11.3 and compare. Of course we can't do that because 11.3 isn't signed anymore so it cannot be installed. Obviously it's not a trivial CPU loop or they would have spotted it quick. Running the CPU in debugging mode probably suppresses it or again they would have spotted it quick.

    I'm starting to have doubts about Apple. Steve Jobs was a prick but maybe that's precisely why he was so successful.
