Tinder Announces New 'Height Verification' Feature. But They May Be Lying (gotinder.com)

"The Tinder dating app will soon be asking men to submit photos in order to verify their height," writes long-time Slashdot reader SonicSpike, sharing a post made Friday (March 29th) on the official Tinder blog. Let's be real, when it comes to online dating -- honesty is the best policy. Yes, your height matters as long as every other shallow aspect of physical attraction does. Please try not to take it to heart...

Height-lying ends here. To require everyone under 6' to own up to their real height, we're bringing truthfulness back into the world of online dating. Introducing Tinder's Height Verification Badge (HVB), because yes -- sometimes it matters. It's the tool we've had in our back-pockets for years, but we were hoping your honesty would allow us to keep it there... Simply input your true, accurate height with a screenshot of you standing next to any commercial building. We'll do some state-of-the-art verifying and you'll receive your badge directly on your profile.

Oh, and by the way? Only 14.5% of the U.S. male population is actually 6' and beyond. So, we're expecting to see a huge decline in the 80% of males on Tinder who are claiming that they are well over 6 feet.

The post concludes that "Tinder's HVB is coming soon to a phone near you," and Tinder's official Twitter account described the feature as "the thing you never asked for, but definitely always wanted," with a short video showing their app displaying errors for incorrect heights. (The second error message reads "Seriously... Please enter your correct height.") The video has been viewed 2.78 million times. Its tagline? "Let's bring honesty back to dating."

"It's unknown at this point if this is a real feature that the company is adding to its dating app," reported one local news site, "or an early April Fool's joke."

Seriously, mere rejection isn't enough, apparently there is a need to actively abuse men. One of the problems with Tinder is that if a woman is looking for an intelligent male, mere use of Tinder disqualifies him.

You are presupposing that the women actually exist in the first place. During the data breach a few years ago Ashley Madison was exposed as having a ton of fake profiles (one site even suggested 90-95% of female profiles were fake) I presume that any site that requires men to pay real money to connect women most like has a huge number of fake profiles on their books.

Beyond just being on the Internet, Tinder is a hookup site. There have always been more men available for hookups than women, for rational biological reasons. Hooking up is higher-risk for women, and if women want a family, they need to start earlier. There's less time for curiosity. Unfair, but true.

My ex GF wanted her labiums fixed. And wanted me to pay for it. I left her ... not because of the money, but I found the idea horrifying ... and she insisted (and her lower parts looked extremely nice and sexy anyway).

I find people who lived a while and arranged with their body and their live, aka being confident, having fun, smile a lot, look back on achievements and look forward for more/other achievements etc. are usually very pleasant and happy and hence: look good! And that means woman around 40 - 50, or 60 depending on way of living, are actually much more attractive than a 20 year old cheer leader.

The way to go is to do a little bit of sports, Yoga would be a start. A martial art or dancing would be better. (Because they are mixed courses, men + women). Or some other work, like gardening.

Point is, you don't need to be super slim to look attractive. You should be in a state, mental state, that you don't worry about your "looks". E.g. about men in the gym. You find any kind of man with muscles like this or more muscles or even more muscles. If I was a girl I would prefer guys who look like ballet dancers. Defined muscles, but not super heavy build up (most likely because that is how I looked from 25 - 30, but it was always my goal to look like that.) I still look like that, but my muscles are less defined (just in case you wondered).

Martial arts as well as dancing automatically bring you together ... no dating site needed it the club is big enough. And obviously you pair up with the other sex automatically often enough. (Well, martial arts as in traditional martial arts ... or Tai Chi/Chi Gong etc. If you only do Muay Thai or kick boxing and only spar with same sex partners ... bad luck)

Both ways of doing sports, build up a basic body constitution ... obviously gardening or farming goes same direction. If you have a basic body constitution, the exact shape does not matter. The grace comes from moving and body posture. A cheer leader who looks good on a photo simply looks ugly if she can not dance, same for a football player. They look ugly if they can not walk, not stand appropriated for a photo etc. The face is irrelevant. You smile: you look good. Obviously YMMV if you have no front teeth.

Point is: it does not matter if you have a bit of a belly, if you have esprie and attitude (insert french pronounciation) you look great. Look at this video: https://www.facebook.com/briti... the guy in question would not look attractive to most people. But in his club and amoung his friends (that includes girls) he is well reputated. (Sorry, can not find the relevant youtube video)

My GF finds herself ugly. I don't know why. She wants the nose changed (from an asian nose with a deep ditch at the brow, to an european one). She has some (few) grey hair and paints it black (that is ok, but with the little bit grey she would look just awesome).
She is very tiny, as in only 5 feet (less actually, 150cm) tall. But besides a little bit of belly, the only fat she has, she is pure muscles. Legs like a weight lifter, broad shoulders, strong arms. I guess she even could beet me at arm wrestling :D I find that extremely attractive ... and she is heavy. I guess about 60kg ...

Slim girls are not automatically attractive. Thin legs which are thin because of hunger are not sexy. Well formed legs of a person who runs, dances, does anything using them, that is sexy. The worst are thin girls with big titts, they are at the edge to be ugly in my eyes, but that is just me.

Anyway, what I want to say: beauty

On the other hand, I've been told by a lot of female friends that a surprising number of guys have strong height preferences for women too.

Well, there are preferences, and there are requirements. I like tall women, long legs and long hair.

But I've dated and been involved with shorties in my younger years.

For the requirements, I was watching a YT video, one of the "Where have all the good men gone" ones. I think it was a Network show like Dateline (calendar type dates).

They had a group of single woman and an interviewer sitting around what looked like a nice bar or restaurant. These were very physically attractive women. They were all in their mid-late 30's, and in professional careers. None could find a man that lived up to their requirements. And since the biological clock was ticking, they were getting desperate, like egg freezing desperate.

They went down their requirement list. The man's height was at or near the top of each.

Other requirements were to make as much money as they are, to be physically fit and handsome, and to be within a specific age range, and it was not stated, but pretty implicit they would be amenable to start fertility treatments immediately.

When looking at their lists, and talking about what to drop in order to make it easier to find a man - trying to give up the height requirement was tough for these ladies - the drive is that strong.

But what they are looking for is a bit of a unicorn anyhow. Finding a man that has all of their requirements is hard. A tall handsome, wealthy, single man in his late 30's early 40's who wants to get married and have children ASAP is a vanishingly small part of the population. It's like every man expecting to marry Sophia Vergara, and refusing to settle for anything less.

One of the first problems that is so often overlooked, is that in the quest for women to hold many high paying careers, is some rock bottom simple math.

There are just so many high paying jobs available. Simple math tells us that if we reach parity of something over 50 percent of women in those careers, that means that there will be less wealthy men available. So welcome to a part of equality they didn't think about. Men "marry down" all the time. The natural inclination of women is to "marry up" due to that security drive. But you can't have equal representation by sex and have women marry up all the time. The pool of men considered acceptable is being reduced by that equality. This is that simple math, and the only way to counteract that is to create many more lucrative careers, or women to fight against that basic drive.

So yeah, the woman who is making 6 or more figures in a lucrative career and racing her biological clock might just need to lower her standards. Or stay single.

Having jumped into this world recently, I have some observations...

At least in my age-bracket (early 50-something, but trolling for 40-somethings and even 30-somethings that are interesting), nearly all the women on Tinder want to replace their lost soul-mate and they want to do it yesterday. This seems to be true of most of the dating sites I'm on. And if you are not existentially clamoring for the same thing then you must be just a serial-dater or a hookup guy and are a waste of their time.

The notion that a soulmate is a difficult thing to find, and that sometimes it needs to develop organically, is just lost on them. Seems they'd rather sit at home alone rather than entertain the notion that perhaps getting out and about with a less-than-ideal match might be a better use of their time. They might even learn something about how other people work/think/behave, and maybe learn something about themselves in the process. And if that less-than-ideal match is physically attractive, not the end of the world to let off some steam in the pent-up-hormones dept.

Personally I try to go in with an open mind, and if the date goes nowhere, I got an evening out at the very least. Or it might cultivate a beneficial platonic relationship, which has happened more than once for me. If it's a good fit and grows into something more, then I'm open to that too. You know, just like how real dating works. But the "ya-gotta-be-looking-to-get-married-and-yesterday" filter is a huge obstacle for everyone involved.

I *am* puzzled at the blatant dishonesty on physical attributes. Lying on your height? Really? And I've gotten really good at reading between the pixels, as it were, on the women's photos. Or at the very least, figure they will be one or two notches less attractive in person. But I'm open to the notion that after a couple of hours, if a person's personality is attractive, the physical appearance truly does go down in importance. Which is one of the biggest limitations in online dating, which is that it's a rare photograph that also conveys a person's soul (to be a bit melodramatic).

My pictures are representative of how I look. And of course I pick ones that make me look good, but not deceptively so. The only fudging I do is with age. And I'm unapologetic about it. There are a statistically unlikely distributions of 39 and 49y/o women on the site. Sorry, no way. The only explanation is they are trying to game the age filter. In my case, losing 25lbs and hitting the gym regularly means an age filter would unfairly bias me out of searches. *Every* time I've come clean on my age after meeting someone, I always get surprised reactions that I really do look mid-40's (I usually advertise upper 40's), and a few times people have commented that my upbeat demeanor is more of a upper-30/lower-40's person.

So I won't be happy if they somehow implement age verification, as I truly believe that people put more importance on it than they should. But I imagine that the women will be even less happy, based on the number of 9's I see in the ages.
