When I travel to 3rd World countries, often we have to have a little bit of lubrication money set aside for dealing with the authorities, mainly getting our technical equipment in and out. Obviously when we submit the budget to the university or non-profit we can't actually use the word "bribe" so we simply write in "cost of doing business". It's a similar idea with piracy. You'll never stop it, and I fear that e-book piracy will be even more rampant simply because for the bandwidth/storage cost of an album, one can get several libraries. The publishers will just have to learn to deal with a percentage of loss to piracy and go from there. Putting things at a more reasonable price would help, but there will always be people out there who simply won't pay.
Well then, by that exact same logic the lunch counter sit-ins and other methods of civil disobedience used during the Civil Rights movement should also be counted as violent since they prevented diners and other business establishments from serving their customers.
It's an operating system, not a religion. I'm using Windows 7 right now as I'm perusing/. while avoiding doing some photo touchups in Photoshop. In a few hours I'll boot into my Debian system and continue working on a project in Python. I feel no shame when I use Windows, it's a tool...it's there to aid in completing a job.
I'll drink to that. I recently moved from the Southern U.S. back to the West Coast. I was told (by a lawyer friend) that I was legally obligated to pay a tax on everything I was transporting over state lines, despite the fact that I had already paid a sales tax in the state where I'd purchased the goods. I love traveling in Europe, the price you see is the price you pay, and I don't feel guilty for not leaving a tip after meals.
How about the system where artists create art for the sake of creativity. When you write a song it becomes part of our culture (except music in the 80's). It should exist for the enjoyment of everybody, not as a magic lottery ticket to provide infinite income for you and your descendants. If continuing infringement makes corporate rock unprofitable and we only get to hear artists who actually enjoy making music...I fail to see how that is a problem.
Is that why I was able to find any number of Linux distros, OC Remix music, and tons of other legal content on TPB? Finding the same content using Google is trivial, by your logic would they be culpable for infringement? What is the magic ratio where a site no longer exists for the sole purpose of copyright infringement?
By that logic there would never be any civil disobedience. We'd still have segregation, Jim Crow laws, any number of statutes on the books that were bought and paid for by a small minority over the protests of the majority.
I agree with you 100% on both counts. I was a lurker long before I signed up for an actual account and have seen things change over the last several years. I realize it's not fair to generalize all Apple users into one camp, but it is difficult to argue that they are trying to instill a culture of "we'll do the thinking for you" to the average consumer.
The problem (at least in my eyes) is that if the phone as an appliance model becomes more popular (eg RIM, Android, MS, etc. disallow third party installs) we may not be able to vote with our wallets. Technically I have a choice between wireless providers, but since for all intents and purposes the plans and rates are identical (other than meaningless and/or superfluous differences) it doesn't matter which provider I choose.
Sad fact is, the average user shouldn't have the ability to install anything. Windows and the Internet taught us this.
So you're willing to trust Lord Jobs to always be benevolent and allow you to install the same applications on his device? I have a bridge for sale too if you're interested...
I wonder though...would a DIY geek even buy a Kinect if it weren't for the driver release? If not, Microsoft would only need a small percentage of those geeks to purchase a Kinect game to recoup the loss they took in its manufacture.
Firesheep isn't an exploit. It's a plugin that allows capturing packets and recreating other user's cookies. If you want to spread FUD, please make it believable.
We come in peace (shoot to kill)

Free Hat!

Sir...I applaud you

Whats the difference between could storage and traditional storage? Buzzwords, and possibly their synergy.
Who cares about buzzwords? The only thing I care about is...is it green?!
Some of us kids still like to build things for ourselves instead of having everything given on a silver platter by Darth Jobs. Just sayin'
How many dogs do you know who understand, at ANY level, the purpose of a printer's OFFLINE button, or a computer's RESET button?
In my experience both of those buttons elude the intelligence of most humans.

There's Norway that would happen!

Naw, the real question is, "Does it antimatter?"
Absolutely positively!
I'm going to go ahead and pronounce your sense of humor dead at...10:39 PST.
Captain Kirk...? Is that really you!?
I'd sign up right now. Do they have tubes on Mars? What kind of bandwidth can I expect?
I wonder though...would a DIY geek even buy a Kinect if it weren't for the driver release? If not, Microsoft would only need a small percentage of those geeks to purchase a Kinect game to recoup the loss they took in its manufacture.
I would like to buy your rock...
