Sony's games on PS3 right now use "less than half" of the PS3, he said. "Nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability."
Sony, stop letting Phil Harrison talk! He takes something based in some truth (PS3 launch titles don't use the systems full potential), then states it in a way that makes him look ignorant. When your represenative looks like an idiot, so do you!
Sony actually has good hardware with the PS3, despite all the FUD. But if they don't pull their heads out of the sand and overhaul the software, they're going to lose a lot of customers.
The best way to make a successful game is to be a gamer yourself, and make a game you yourself would have a blast playing. At the end of the day, that's all a game needs to be: fun.
Here's the three points a fun game should hit:
Easy to learn, difficult to master - Anyone should be able to intuatively figure out how to play within a few minutes, but the gameplay should have enough depth to show a differance between a beginner and an avid fan.
Sense of power - Your character/car/robot/whatever should over 'feel' powerful; this can mean anything in the context of your game, but players like to feel their better-than-average in the game universe.
Replayabilty - Self-explanitory.
Let's face it, Red Hat and other Linux companies simply do not have the financial resources to tackle Microsoft in this absurdity when it (at it will) end up in the courts.
IBM however, does. And despite what you think of IBM, they have been a huge, HUGE supporter of Linux; I honestly think IBM wants to remove Microsoft products completely from their business, they simply cannot just yet. IBM has already fought SCO over Linux patents and their lawyers should be prepared for this sort of battle.
Microsoft thinks they have a deep patent library? They have no fucking idea what Big Blue has up their sleeve.
Growing game budgets have been to blame for this. Final Fantasy XII, for example consumed $35 million in production costs.
Now, not all titles use that much, but $20-$30 million dollar game budgets are not uncommon anymore.
Face it...video game violence is nothing but a hot-button "get me voted" issue much like abortion and gay marrage. Once in office, these politicians could care less.
To all you FFVI fanboys who claim no FF game will ever be that great...take a look at the credits of FFVI and FFXII. What's that? Oh, yes, THE SAME WRITERS.
FFXII is a brilliant game, and so was FFVI. Get over yourself.
Game release date delays are almost always a good thing; if the developer does not feel the title is polished enough, please, please delay it and keep working on it. I wish more companies took the Blizzard / Valve route and waited until their games was not only finished, but polished to a fine sheen before release.
Otherwise, you end up with KoTOR 2; a good game (could have been brilliant) turned into a major dissapointment by a rushed development cycle.
People piss and moan about Blu-Ray, "You don't need it!" or "Most people don't have HDTV's!"
Well, some of us do. And if you don't, I'd hope that you'd prefer a format that will upgrade with you should you ever choose to get a 7.1 audio system or HDTV. When you're posting your Sony flames, just think of the irony in Slashdot posters arguing that we don't need a new technology.
I'm no lawyer, so can somebody explain to me how a court can say that Spamhaus, a service that customers voluntarily sign up for, cannot index IP addresses theat users wish to block? There is nothing Spamhaus does that a local mail server cannot do, they just already have a blacklist for you. Spamhaus is just, "Hey, don't trust these guys."
That's like saying I can't go to Consumer Reports and get an opinion on what car to buy.
...wait, you did what? You bought PS3 rights for XFire? That...that's actually SMART. You did something smart in regards to the PS3!? WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY SONY!?
What I find funny is that every time I hear a report that "PC is a smaller gaming market than consoles", they are comparing the PC gaming market to all the current-gen consoles combined. That's hardly fair, since consoles are completely incompatable with each other and shouldn't be lumped into the same market.
Now, compare the PC market to just the XBox 360 market, or to just the PS2 market...and suddenly it's not a niche at all. It's an alternative.

You've got to be kidding me. Are the plantiffs wii'tarded or something?

I am a PS3 owner. Wake up, Sony.
Incorrect.
The PS3 delays are not because of the Cell, but because of the diode used in the Blu-Ray laser. IBM has nothing to do with the optical drive.

"In normal times, evil would be fought by good. But in times like these, well, it should be fought by another kind of evil."
From "Eye of the Beholder":
(paraphrased since it's been a long time since I've seen it)
Waiter: "Here's your drink, sir. That'll be six fifty."
Blind man: *hands him a folded bill*
Waiter: *lying* "Uhh...this is a five."
Joanna: *glances over* "No, you asshole, it's a TEN."
Waiter: "Oh, m-my mistake." *hurries off*
Blind Man: *smiles* "It's alright dear. I knew. See, I fold the fives the short way, and the tens the long way."

A sales pitch...because Slashdot editors are not allowed to have opinions!

It's the energy source of the future! It's...
...gas?
This is old news; very old news. This technology was in working form in October, 2003: http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,61009, 00.html
Cheaters never win. Okay, well, they always win, but that's what makes them losers.
It just wouldn't be Halo if half the sets didn't consist of identical, honeycomb-like corridors.
The $3000 version of the PS4 is built specifically for Ultra HDTV! Pre-order now!

Yes, FFXII, one of only six titles in history to receive a perfect score from Famitsu, is clearly "junk".
Ha ha, Sony, man you guys are so fuc-
...wait, you did what? You bought PS3 rights for XFire? That...that's actually SMART. You did something smart in regards to the PS3!? WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY SONY!?
...but does it use a Sony battery?
